Cathedral Life Weekly 4th Sunday Before Lent, 5 February 2017

DID YOU KNOW that Chelmsford Cathedral has a ‘Marriage Group’? It is composed of one of our Pastoral Assistants and members of the congregation, including some recently married here at the Cathedral.

The group helps the Canon Pastor, Ivor Moody, to coordinate and organise pastoral support and outreach to any and all in the Cathedral, not only those in relationships but any who, for one reason or another, find themselves on their own. (Which is why we must change the name of the group: suggestions welcome!). One great thing about this support group (though) is that it’s a great way to interest and engage couples whose first encounter with the Cathedral is so often their own wedding! It gives them a chance to help with the development of the Cathedral’s ministry to other couples who are in a similar situation as well as

introducing them to the wider aspect of pastoral care and support for the congregation and the community.

The Group hatched a plot recently to organise a Cathedral wedding display and we are inviting people to bring to the Cathedral any memorabilia from their wedding day - something old, something blue - photos, service booklets, wedding dresses - our record so far is someone who is bring along a dress she wore 46 years ago - can you beat that?!

A team will be available to receive your offerings between 1pm and 3pm on Saturday 11 February where a display will be on view over the weekend until Wednesday 15 February. To add to the fun, Brian Greatrex has made the Cathedral a wedding cake for us all to enjoy at coffee in the Cathedral between the morning services on the 12th!

Study Notes on the Sunday Gospel Matthew 5: 13-20 Introduction & Context Here in the “sermon on the mount” Jesus teaches essential lessons about being disciples. “Salt” does not really lose its taste, but in Judaism it can become ritually unclean and need to be “thrown out”. (It was used to season incense and offerings to God.) Jesus calls disciples to be examples of God’s ability to change lives (vv. 14-16). They will make known God’s power (“glory”). Disciples must be visible and attractive: as a “city” is. Vv. 17-20: the “scribes and the Pharisees” were “righteous” for they kept the Law scrupulously, but Jesus says that such conduct is inadequate for admission to the Kingdom. Vv. 21-48 Jesus preaches a faith that goes beyond the Law: one of the heart, of love and compassion. The gospel fulfills the Law, and exceeds it through grace. Once you are settled and are ready to go: Read the passage slowly and reflectively Note anything that particularly strikes you and refer to the

notes if they are helpful Spend a few moments in quiet reflection If you are a group, share your reflections in pairs or as a whole

group (remembering that each person will have different perspectives and views on the passage)

Read the passage for a final time and give thanks to God for the gift of his holy word.

Youth Group Swedish fundraising meal

Hej Hej! Saturday night saw the Youth Group’s first big fundraiser for the Sweden Trip. We hosted a Swedish - themed meal in the Cathedral, complete with meatballs and a traditional frog dance! We had a three course meal and musical interludes from members of the youth group. It was even more special as we were joined for the weekend by our Swedish friends who will be hosting us during the summer.

The evening was a great success and enjoyed by everyone. A huge thank you to all who came along and those who helped us raise over £600. Our next fundraiser is a Curry Night at Taj Mahal 2 on 27 February. Speak to Steve or Tim for details or email steven.conroy@chelmsford cathedral.org.uk We look forward to seeing you there.
