Now thru mid-March – Eagle

Watch! In winter, hundreds of

bald eagles migrate to the Pocono

Mountains in search of open

water, fresh fi sh, and undisturbed

habitat. In addition to these visiting

migrants, the region is also proud

of a growing, breeding population

of resident eagles. Every Saturday

& Sunday from January 1 through

mid-March, trained Eagle Institute

volunteers will staff popular

viewing locations at Lackawaxen

and elsewhere around the

Delaware River to assist eagle

watchers in sighting these majestic

birds. Eagle Institute staffers have

spotting scopes, extra binoculars,

and helpful information for eagle

watchers, and can direct visitors to

other viewing locations. From April

through September, eagle watching

is not encouraged because of

the eagles’ sensitivity to human

disturbance during this critical time.

Please respect these resident eagles

and their young! The Eagle Institute

Winter Field Offi ce at 176 Scenic

Drive in Lackawaxen (at the end of

the Roebling Bridge) is open every

Friday through Sunday from January

until mid-March. Call the offi ce or

drop by to learn where eagles are

being sighted, or visit their web

page at www.eagleinstitute.org and

see the “Eagle Forum” message

board. For maps, directions and

more information, contact The

Eagle Institute at (570) 685-5960

or (845) 557-6162, or email them

at [email protected].

“Crystal Cabin Fever,” an indoor,

interactive ice display for all ages.

This year’s theme is the Old West.

Enter through an ice mine maze

and explore an old western town.

Sit on an ice covered wagon and

drive the team of ice horses. Ride

run ice slide to guarantee twice the

Ski & Stay & Tube at Fernwood Hotel & Resort Now is the time to make your winter getaway! Gina Bertucci of

the 440-acre Fernwood Hotel & Resort says, “With themed restaurants,

indoor pools, saunas, live entertainment, and both villas and hotel rooms,

we offer it all; amenities, convenient location, and specially priced lift

and snow tubing tickets. Ski & Stay packages start from just $67.00 per

person. It doesn’t get much more affordable than that, when you do the

math of what it costs to purchase lift tickets and a hotel room separately.

But more importantly, it’s the best way to get out of hibernation and enjoy

winter.”

The Winter Fun Center package includes a hotel room and 2 tubing

tickets for just $160.00/night. Snow tubing is easy, and a great way to

spend a sunny winter day. Fernwood’s Winter Fun Center also offers

horseback riding and a Tiny Tot Tube & Play Area. Bertucci concludes,

“Cold weather should not force people indoors. There is plenty to do

that celebrates winter, whatever your athletic preference. We offer fresh

air and sunshine at no extra charge.” Find it off I-80 in Bushkill; see

Guided Bald Eagle Excursion

On Saturday,

February 19th, The

Eagle Institute will

host a Guided Bald Eagle Excursion. Meet at The Eagle

Institute Winter Field

Offi ce for departure

at 10:00am. Cost is

$10.00/pp for this

heated-bus excursion

to a popular eagle

viewing site and habi-

tat near the Delaware

River, and space is

limited. The event will focus on migration patterns, pos-

sibly observing some early breeding rituals by resident

nesting pairs.

Dress warmly, wear boots, and bring your

lunch, binoculars, and camera! The Eagle Institute

Winter Field Offi ce, 176 Scenic Drive in Lackawaxen

at the Roebling Bridge, is open Fridays, Saturdays,

and Sundays through mid-March. Drop by the of-

fi ce, call (570) 685-5960 or (845) 557-6162, email

[email protected], and soar to the Eagle Forum

message board at www.eagleinstitute.org!

Eagle Watch! Hundreds of bald eagles migrate to the Pocono

Mountains each winter in search of open water, fresh fi sh,

and undisturbed habitat. In addition to migratory eagles,

our region is home to a growing, breeding population of

resident eagles. Every Saturday and Sunday through mid-

March, volunteers trained by The Eagle Institute staff pop-

ular viewing locations, assisting eagle watchers in spotting

these majestic birds.

Self-guided eagle watchers are aided by eagle eti-

quette volunteers, who have spotting scopes, extra binoc-

ulars, eagle information,

and directions to various

viewing locations. From

April through September,

eagle watching is dis-

couraged because of the

eagles’ sensitivity to hu-

man disturbance during

this critical time. Please

respect the eagles and

their young!

The Eagle Institute Winter Field Offi ce, 176 Scenic

Drive in Lackawaxen at the end of Roebling Bridge, is

open every Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and by appointment,

through mid-March. For maps, directions, and more, visit

The Great Great Backyard Backyard Bird CountBird Count wants You

Join the free, 14th annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) from Friday,

February 18th through Monday, February 21st. Volunteers coast-to-coast will

count birds in yards, parks, and refuges; citizen scientists help researchers

know how birds are faring and how to protect them. Last year, 97,300+ lists

created the continent’s most comprehensive snapshot of bird populations ever

recorded!

In 2010, 63,000 volunteers across the United States and Canada found

the count to be great fun. “I enjoy being outdoors and birding is a source of

relaxation and stress relief!” wrote one participant. “Looking and listening for

birds forces me to focus on the environment around me at a higher level of

intensity, and notice things I might otherwise miss.”

Anyone can take part; count birds for at least 15 minutes on at least 1 day of the event, and report your

sightings online. Wing your way to www.birdcount.org, contact the Cornell Lab of Ornithology at (800) 843-2473 or

[email protected], and reach the Audubon Society at [email protected] or (215) 355-9588x16. The number

at the local NEPA Audubon Society offi ce in Honesdale is (570) 253-9250.

It’s Time for Ice Fishing! It’s Time for Ice Fishing! Wintertime in the Pocono Mountains of northeast Pennsylvania offers

a wealth of ways to appreciate the pristine beauty of nature. Now is the time

to go ice fi shing, a simple and inexpensive winter sport that’s perfect in the

Poconos!

A popular and effective ice fi shing device called a tip-up consists of 2

pieces of wood in an X shape; you’ll also need a hook, a spool of line, and a

small fl ag. When a fi sh pulls line off the spool, a lever fl ips and the fl ag tips

up. You may also use a fi shing rod to ice fi sh. Make a small hole in the ice

with an axe, crowbar, digging bar, or auger. Hook your bait, and drop into

the water through the hole. Savor a snack, sip something warm in your ther-

mos, and relax.

Sport fi shing is a rewarding, intergenerational pastime, and soon you’ll

be hooked! A fi shing license is required in most cases, ice thickness is critical,

and live bait is best. For comprehensive information about fi shing licenses

and ice fi shing on lakes and ponds throughout the state, cast your line to the

Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission at www.fi sh.state.pa.us. Fish on!
