Pennsylvania 400 Pennsylvania 400 WeekendWeekend NASCAR stars power up to the Pocono
Mountains for the Pennsylvania 400 August 3-5 at
Pocono Raceway in Long Pond. Part of the NASCAR
Sprint Cup Series, the Pennsylvania 400 is a world
class race experience.
Pocono Raceway, nicknamed the Tricky Triangle
because of the track’s unusual design, features turns
modeled after turns from three different tracks,
making it a particularly challenging course.
The Poconos offer NASCAR fans plenty of
entertainment and dining options outside the track.
Local brewpub Barley Creek (barleycreek.com)
is about 12 miles from Long Pond, and perennial
favorite, Van Gilder’s Jubilee (breakfastking.com), is
less than 10 miles from the track.

400: (800) RACE-WAY, poconoraceway.com.

Pennsylvania 400 Weekend
Heritage Craft Day at Quiet Valley A celebration of early American crafts and skills, Quiet Valley’s 5th
Annual Heritage Craft Day gives visitors to the farm the opportunity to
witness the creativity that characterized early Pennsylvania settlers while
also participating in old fashioned crafts.
Crafts featured include weaving, spinning, rug braiding and hooking,
basket and broom making, blacksmithing and paper cutting (Scherenschnitte).
Quilling, the art of making three-dimensional objects from paper, is still
popular today. Embroidery demonstrations will feature various types
of needlework.
When you go: Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm, 347 Quiet Valley
Road, Stroudsburg, (570) 992-6161, quietvalley.org.

Festival of Woodat Grey Towers From shelter to warmth to paper and art objects, the importance of
wood in everyday life cannot be overstated. The Festival of Wood, August 4
and 5, celebrates this essential element at Grey Towers National Historic Site
in Milford.
Handmade woodcrafts created by woodworkers of the Pocono Arts
Council and food vendors will be onsite. The day includes chain saw wood carving, portable sawmill and tree pruning
demonstrations, live animal and educational exhibits,
and fi lms.
A children’s tent will present activities with wood
and special appearances by Smokey Bear and Woodsy
Owl. Also, self-guided tours of the spectacular Grey
Towers mansion are available for $5 per person.
The former home of Gifford Pinchot, fi rst Chief
of the U.S. Forest Service and Pennsylvania Governor
for two terms, Grey Towers (122 Old Owego Turnpike,
Milford) is the Poconos’ version of Versailles.
The Festival of Wood’s hours are 10 a.m.
to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on
Sunday. For more information: (570) 296-9630,

Since hosting the fi rst recorded jazz festival in 1951, Northeast Pennsylvania
has championed the popularity of America’s original music form. The Scranton
Jazz Festival, August 3-5, taking place at the Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel
and other downtown Scranton venues, continues the area’s rich jazz tradition.
Headliners include iconic funk and R&B performers The Average White
Band, French/gypsy jazz band The Hot Club of Detroit and vocal jazz great
Roseanna Vitro. The stellar lineup also features Bill Goodwin, who has worked
with Tom Waits and Steely Dan, and local virtuoso Marko Marcinko and his
Latin Jazz Quintet.
Friday and Saturday night jazz walks spotlight performers in venues along
Lackawanna, Adams and N. Washington Avenues (see Coming Events for
locations). Sunday events include a jazz brunch at Carmen’s in the Radisson,
vocalist performances, student combos
and a Big Band Tribute to the legendary
Jaco Pastorius.
Ticket prices: Friday, $25; Saturday and
Sunday: $20. Tickets are available at all Gallery
of Sound locations and by emailing hrunco@
yahoo.com or calling (570) 487-3954. The
Radisson, built originally as a train station
and offi ce building in 1908, is located at 700
Lackawanna Avenue. For more information:
