Pancakes and Propellers planned for Memorial Day Weekend in the Poconos Flippin’ flapjacks and flyin’ high are on this year’s Memorial Day weekend agenda as aviation enthusiasts make plans to take flight at the Aviation Day and Fly-In Drive-In Breakfast set for May 25 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Pocono Mountains Municipal Airport.

Nineteen years and still going strong, the annual gathering that started with intentions of introducing the wonders of aviation to the public through tours of the facility along with airplane and helicopter rides; has evolved to become one of its sponsor, Mt. Pocono Rotary’s, largest fundraisers.

Each year the Rotary focuses on worthy causes throughout the community. As we take part in the tradition of recognizing men and women who serve our country; the group agreed proceeds should benefit two area organizations the Valor Clinic for Homeless Vets and Monroe County Joint Veteran’s Honor Guard.

Valor steps in with shelter and assistance to military personnel that fall upon hard times as they return from duty. MCJVHG provides honorable recognition during funerals for members of our armed forces that pass.

Event Co-Chair, Vern Moyer comments, “It is appropriate that we are honoring two military related organizations on Memorial Day Weekend with the day’s activities including a special Memorial Day Ceremony.”

Admission is free with military equipment, motorcycle and antique car displays, activities for the kids, along with various sights to see including a 1 p.m.parachute demonstration and Memorial Day Ceremony.

Rotarians will be serving up morning delicacies during the All You Can Eat breakfast at $10 for adults and kids under 12 $6. Airplane and helicopter rides bring in additional dollars for the cause as Moyer Aviation and Hi-Tech Helicopters donate the airborne excursions.

Moyer praises the generosity of all that are contributing toward the day’s festivities inviting others to follow suit stating, “We are still offering sponsorships and welcome area businesses to assist with raising money for these worthy causes.”

Information is available by calling 570-839-7161.

So grab a lawn chair and come on out and enjoy a day outdoors.

“Everything comes together here,” describes Roebling Inn on the Delaware’s JoAnn Jahn. Serving “soul seekers” and “romantics”- not to mention fans of the great outdoors alongside her husband Don for over 26 years; the pair takes pride in the Lackawaxen destination’s label as Pike County’s premiere Bed and Breakfast.

The Delaware River lends its serene sound to the privacy that awaits mature visitors seeking time away to blend with nature. As warm weather approaches fly-fishing, hiking and golf are but a few excursions drawing crowds to the stately manor built in 1870 by The Canal Company.

Calling the “Ever changing activity on the river- rejuvenating,” JoAnn admits though she enjoys tubing, it’s sitting alongside the riverbed that peaks her interest. She explains it all in three simple words, “Reflections, sound and shadows.”

Breathtaking sunsets matched by an equally entrancing kaleidoscope of colorful foliage cast upon the rolling water seem to be the duo’s unanimous vote as Roebling’s draw over the years.

The Inn Keepers suggest you decide by making your reservation at www.roeblinginn.com or calling (570) 685-7900 for a taste of the “Perfect combination of dynamics and relaxation” when planning your vacation.

Christened “The Niagara of Pennsylvania,” Bushkill Falls features eight waterfalls cascading over the primeval rocks and slate walls that form the uplands of the Pocono Mountains. As one of Pennsylvania’s most beautiful and dramatic natural sights, Bushkill Falls makes an ideal daytrip for hikers and great singles and family weekend getaway. A visit to Bushkill is a journey into the beauty, power and grace of nature. Two streams flowing down the mountainside feed the eight waterfalls. Trails and bridges wind through the area—affording incredible views of the falls—into a lush, emerald green forest. The majestic main waterfall drops over the edge of a 100-foot

LITTLE ITALY MENU $14.95 - ALL DAY, EVERY DAY SUNDAY BRUNCH $14.95

As May 11 rapidly approaches the task of tallying an agenda for Mother’s Day weighs heavy on the minds of families everywhere. Fear not! The advantage of a Pocono zip code is that there’s a cornucopia of exciting choices to offer Mom on not only her “day off” but every day. Outdoor fun and dining await across the area with tantalizing morning brunch choices to kick off the day’s excursions followed by evening dinner options throughout this issue all geared toward focusing on the simple yet sometimes forgotten fact- Mom does not want to cook on her special day! What a difference a day makes! How about a weekend? Relieve the burden of her daily duties and check out our Coming Events with choices for challenging her sports prowess in a CBK Mountain Adventure course or maybe igniting her creative juices with a visit to Amazon Art Studio for their Mother’s Appreciation Day. How about a leisurely stroll through Pocono Bazaar Flea Market?

Don’t forget that gift! A lovely shrub to accentuate her garden from Pocono Environmental Education Center’s weekend plant sale in Dingman’s Ferry or Brodhead Watershed Association’s Native Plant Sale at Northampton Community College would fill the bill nicely. Or how about picking up a charming treasure from one of the unique Pocono boutiques detailed in our Shopping Section like Jasmine Jewelers in Tannersville?

Top it off with a sinfully delicious dessert from Pocono Cheesecake Factory and your Mother’s Day gratitude obligations will be fulfilled into the next year!

To mothers everywhere-Have a wonderful Mother’s Day from This Week on, here in the Poconos!

WHY THE LAKE NAOMI~TIMBER TRAILS MARKET IS HEALTHY(While other markets around the country struggle - is this a buyer’s market?)Real estate markets have always been local in nature. Apartments in New York City are still commanding loftyprices, and homes in the Charlotte area are still increasing. Yet, rampant speculative building in many parts of thecountry nearly collapsed their markets. To perpetuate the nonsense, strategic financing schemes lured custom-ers deeper into the boiling cauldron. For home buyers and for speculators alike, mortgages were easily obtainedwith little or no documentation. If you had a pulse, a mortgage was waiting. Don't bother with the details... priceswill always go up to cover the excesses. Sadly, it’s not always so.

Thankfully, Lake Naomi~Timber Trails has been a different story. During the forty plus years we’ve been here atLake Naomi there have been some violent swings in both the real estate market and the stock market. Very re-cently, the stock market’s acrobatics were enough to give any sane person a concussion. Here in our local realestate market, we’ve remained rather steady. Did you know the average sale in the last 12 months is lower by aminuscule 1%? From June 2008, the median sale is up 7%!** How is that possible? First and foremost, we are notin a primary home market. The vast majority of our homes are discretionary purchases and our clientele is morefinancially stable and financially adept than the average first-time home buyer. If our clients aren’t paying cash, they’re taking plain-vanilla fixed-rate conventional mortgages. We dodged the scathing sub-prime mortgagefiasco. Too few lots remain for overbuilding or speculative building to ever be a problem.

Every year, at Memorial Day, we hold our breath anticipating the new season. After reading in the media about theweak markets in other parts of the country, we were particularly curious this year. Memorial Day weekend marksthe start of our main selling season, and we couldn't have been more surprised or delighted.

Over Memorial Day weekend, we sold five houses, one in Lake Naomi for $790,000 and one in Timber Trails for$450,000. It was most encouraging to observe multiple offers come in on one of the properties. Neither deal wasgiven away. One sold for 90.2% of the asking price, and the other for 92%.

This was one of the best starts for any summer season in memory!

** Lake Naomi is a diverse community of home values, ranging from under $200,000 to over $1,000,000.A single million dollar lakefront sale can significantly skew the average, making the median sale price a far moresignificant indicator of market trends.

CAMP MINSI PROJECT STRENGTHENS OUR PROPERTY VALUES(An assist from an unusual source)Hopefully, you have already read the article in the Lake Naomi Club newsletter, “Reflections,” that explains howthe Wildlands Conservancy, the Monroe County Open Space Program, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylva-nia have created a plan to protect the 1,242 acre Camp Minsi from future development or commercializa-tion. Camp Minsi is the Boy Scouts of America property immediately to the east of Lake Naomi that residesalong Stillwater Lake. The exact method the property will be protected is not significant. What is significant, however, is the fact that all that land will never be developed in competition to Lake Naomi~Timber Trails.

Virtually all the lakes of any significance in the Poconos have already been subdivided and developed. CampMinsi is one of the remaining exceptions that has access to a sizeable lake, and, is right in our back yard. Now,however, we will no longer have to wonder what will be built there. The answer is nothing... and in perpetuity.

The property is about a third larger than Timber Trails, so it had the potential to be a competitor for many years.By removing potential development, folks looking for a quality lake community will have their sights focusedmore acutely than ever on Lake Naomi~Timber Trails.

New roads have enhanced access to Lake Naomi, and the lack of meaningful competition will have a substan-tial effect on our future property values. We didn’t create the law of supply and demand - we merelywatch its effect.

Lackawanna county: TransiT HisTory HoTspoT Nearby Lackawanna County is filled with hotspots eager to invite visitors to a time reminiscent of days gone by. Downtown Scranton plays a significant role in the attraction with its famed transit history that beckons travelers from near and far to check out tributes of marvelous steel masterpieces known as the Steam Train and Electric Street Car.

Steamtown National Historic Site at 150 South Washington Avenue in Scranton welcomes all aboard for a visit to the industrial era. The Technology and History museum is geared toward enlightening all on the wonders of the past that fueled commuters out and about the city. Excursion lines throughout the area starting in July offer the sights and sounds of authentic diesel-electric locomotives as the piercing whistle echoes amongst the mountainous scenery.

Scranton Limited short train rides began their 2014 season April 19 with runs continuing Wednesdays and Saturdays in May at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. then 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. They trek on during the summer months running Wednesdays and Fridays in June, converting to daily in July and August, then weekends in September. For more information visit www.nps.gov/stea or call (570) 340-5200

Over 125 years since its first run in 1886, the electric street car’s reign as the longest operating line in the United States up to 1954 has also left its mark on downtown Scranton. The Electric City Trolley Museum, appropriately nestled within a 19th Century Mill at 300 Cliff Street, invites visitors to take a tour through time open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Sunday in October with their own excursions running Thursdays through Sundays in May to October.

Call (570) 963-6590 or check out www.ectma.org to plan your electrifying railway ride today!
