We acknowledge the Mouheneener People, the traditional custodians of this land on which we gather for worship.

This church seeks to be a place of safety and acceptance for all people.

Hi there Church, We sang “Blessed be the name of the Lord” at the beginning of the service last week. This week, its scriptural inspiration may offer some insight to the subject of prayer in a time of suffering. So I looked through my archives and…what do you know?.. I’d written on it before! At the worst time of my life!!!

In happier times, I re-visit this text and am even more convinced that Job was really on to something… so here it is again.

Job 1

I can’t yet call myself an authority on loss and grief but, right now, I’m taking the intensive. Obviously, Job comes to mind. OK, he was a righteous man which means that he must have been an exceptionally good bloke because, unlike me, his righteousness was not found in Christ who was still some centuries away from incarnation. So Satan challenges God to a battle for Job’s soul and in one bad day, this pillar of happiness, position and wealth loses everything. How does a righteous man respond in an overarching ideology where family, health and prosperity indicates favor with God?

“The Lord Gives and the Lord takes away.

Blessed is the Name of the Lord!”

And, as my notion of normal has been torn to shreds and I cry a torrent of tears for my loss, they cannot wash away my foundation! My house is built upon the rock. The battle for my soul was won 2000 years ago in the suffering of my sav-ior!

Blessed be the name of the Lord!

Rev Michael Duke
