Remember! San Gabriel Valley Region’s April 2018 Membership Breakfast Meeting will be

It begins at Rusnak Porsche Westlake at 9:00 AM. Then, get set for a thrilling ride through eastern
Ventura and western Los Angeles counties. The drive ends at Dos Vientos Community Park in Newbury
Park. There, we’ll be treated to a great BBQ lunch. The cost is $40 per person, including lunch and SBR
activity fee.

Canyons (Page 32)
Location: College of the Canyons, 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road, Santa Clarita, CA.
The Concours will be in a tree-lined area adjacent to the campus stadium. Placement will begin at 8
a.m., Judging begins at 10:30 a.m. and awards at 2 p.m. Complimentary lunch (with entry) and bottled
water will be available. Additional lunches will cost $15 each.

Protecting Your Privacy on the SGVR app
We hope you are enjoying the San Gabriel Valley Region smartphone app. As you know, it lists all the
members subscribing to the app. It defaults to displaying your e-mail address and telephone number.
In early October 2017, a vendor who was also an SGVR member harvested e-mail addresses and began
sending advertising to those addresses, which was contrary to our terms of service. We have received
complaints.
San Gabriel Valley Region is working to prevent commercial use of your personal data.
In the meantime, you can easily prevent your personal data being displayed.

Automotive Museum
The Petersen Automotive Museum is developing an exhibit called The Porsche Effect that will be on view
from February 3, 2018 to January 27, 2019. We have been working alongside Porsche Cars North
America and have recently connected with PCA.
PCA and the larger extended family of Porsche owners and enthusiasts will be explored in the exhibit’s
Extended Family section which will include a Club Coupe and artifacts from the PCA archive. We were
hoping that you could help us learn more about Zone 8’s history and determine additional ways that we
can collaborate with the local Porsche community.

Serving as the official kickoff to #Luft5, and celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Porsche 964 Debut at
the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1988 (89-94), and the recent opening of The Porsche Effect exhibition, the
Petersen Automotive Museum will host a VIP event on Friday, April 20 with live entertainment, food and
drink, a panel discussion, and a cruise-in gallery of significant air-cooled cars.
This indoor/outdoor event will feature a concourse of air-cooled Porsches, a projection wall, DJ, curated
photo opportunities, food and beverage, and an exclusive gift package. VIP's will be treated to an
exclusive experience in the Rooftop penthouse, which includes access to the panelists, special alcohol
tastings, and more.
Interested owners can submit details of their cars for consideration in a special display gallery within the
event at [email protected].

The 32nd Anniversary of North meets South celebrates the 70th Anniversary of Porsche!

Oaks, CA 91362.
Bring with you: Pad and pencil, a navigator and fortify your patience with a sense of humor.
Then, get set for a thrilling ride through eastern Ventura and western Los Angeles counties. Your sense
of direction and intellectual prowess will be challenged as you will answer questions based on sights and
locations in city and rural areas.
Our drive will end at Dos Vientos Community Park in Newbury Park. There, we’ll be treated to a great
BBQ lunch. Prizes to the top three finishers based on number of correct answers.
The cost is $40 per person, including lunch and SBR activity fee. This is always a popular event, so don’t

That’s the weekend of the Planes of Fame Airshow (page 47). Parking get’s tight—it’s not a
problem when the 356s arrive but you’ll have to move your car to stay for the Airshow.

These Tours and Gimmick Rally will be centered around Flagstaff, Prescott and the scenic mountains of
northern Arizona. This will be a perfect time to escape from the summer heat of Las Vegas, Phoenix and
Tucson to the cool lush pines at an altitude of 7,000 feet. Las Vegas Region has invited the three PCA
Arizona Regions to these Tours and Gimmick Rally. We would like to extend the invitation to PCA
members from all regions to join in the fun!
Hotel registration and costs will be by the individuals. You need to make your reservations early, as
Flagstaff hotels book quickly in the summer. We have a few suggestions for hotels; however, the main

Greetings!
I will conduct a Technical Session for Weber triple throat carburetors in Salem, Oregon on
Saturday, 9June of this year. The session will held at my shop which is in a residential area
so it is limited to 20 participants. I held a previous workshop in Sonoma, California in April,
2105 and all who attended seemed to enjoy the event.
Topics of discussion:
Theory of carburetor operation
Dis-assembly and inspection of components
Servicing of worn components
Reassembly
Basic setup and tuning (on-engine tuning will be demonstrated)
The session will start at 9AM and will conclude at 4PM. Bagels with beverages for breakfast
and sandwiches with beverages for lunch will be provided.
Price per person is TBD (no more than $50) to cover my expenses for hand-outs &
refreshments.
In addition, my shop will be open on Sunday, 10June for visitation and discussion of Weber
performance and other related or interesting topics.
Salem is a nice town and only one hour from Portland, the Pacific Ocean and great wine
country surrounds it. Not a bad place to come & visit.

DISPLAY IN ORANGE COUNTY, SATURDAY, JUNE 16
More than 120 Porsches expected at Mile Square Park for 48th annual show
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CALIFORNIA, April 6, 2018 – The 48th annual edition of Porsche in the Park, a white
glove Concours and Porsche display presented by the Porsche Club of America, Orange Coast Region, is
set for Saturday, June 16, 2018 in Fountain Valley’s Mile Square Park, located at 16400 Euclid Street,
Fountain Valley, California 92708. The event is free to the public for viewing.
This year, Porsche will commemorate its 70th anniversary on June 8, marking the day the first ever
Porsche 356 'No. 1' Roadster was registered as an automobile.
In celebration of the milestone, more than 120 Porsches are expected to be on display at the Orange
County activity, including the latest models, rare vintage cars and racecars, along with Porsche-branded
merchandise from a variety of club sponsors.
Approximately 50 cars will be judged in six divisions with categories in each division. Porsches in the
judged and display categories pay fees to enter the event and to park on the field. Judged cars arrive at
7:00 AM, with display cars arriving after 7:30 AM. The opening ceremony is set for 9:00 AM, with judging
beginning at 9:30 AM, and the awards ceremony starting at approximately 1:30 PM. The entry fee will
be $60 per judged car, and $20 for each Porsche on display. A competition for the unique picnic displays
will also be held.
Additionally, guests can purchase beer and wine in a restricted beer garden area sponsored by the
Fountain Valley Community Foundation, and enjoy pre-ordered box lunches.
Primary sponsors include Circle Porsche and Porsche Riverside. Additional sponsors include LoJack,
Cooper’s Classy Care Care, Cape Auto Repair, The Porsche Design Store, Hagerty Insurance, Mothers Car
Care Products and Stoner Car Care Products.

Event
Registration is now open for Southern Arizona Region’s annual Cinco de Mayo continuous lapping AX
and Golf Event.
The Zone 8 AX will be held on 29 April at Musselman Honda Circuit, you will have plenty of track time.
New for this year is that all drivers will have a transponder assigned to them and all laps will be
recorded. Additionally, we will have more shade available to you when you are in the pit area. This
event sold out last year causing us to turn participants away. Do not miss your opportunity to participate
at this fun event.

Catalina Course. This course has been host to the PGA tour from 1965 to 2006 and since 2015 hosts the
Champions Tour Cologuard Classic. The Catalina course is considered a traditional-style layout with
gentle contours and tree-lined fairways with spectacular views. This course is said to be a fair test of golf
to players of all caliber with a challenging finish at the 18th hole.

This year we have a new event with a contest…The CFoS Kids Sticker Design Contest! We are looking for
submissions for designs for a sticker. Any child under 12 from a PCA related family may enter!
Submissions can be on any size paper. Every kid will get a sticker made from the winning design. Kids

On Saturday, Nitro Revival brings the sights and sounds of the early days of front-engine Top Fuel
dragsters and other organized hot rod racing back to life with a large lineup of fully restored machines. It
serves as a reunion for racers from that era and gives fans the experience of a drag racing museum
come to life. The Saturday event will close with a “Line of Fire” mass fire-up that will have the cackling
sounds of vintage drag cars echoing through the rolling hills of the Monterey Peninsula. The paddock will

The San Marino Motor Classic is the premier regional automotive exhibition in the San Gabriel Valley
and one of the premier concours-level exhibitions in Southern California. Concours d’Élégance. The San
Marino Motor Classic was established in 2011 by co-founders Aaron Weiss, Ben Reiling, and San Gabriel
Valley Region member Paul Colony held in Lacy Park, an exclusive 30-acre park in San Marino.

The face of the 2018 Porsche 911 GT3 looks like mine today, after I got a ticket on the way to work: It’s a
look that can shoot daggers.
The rest of the car follows suit, which explains why it attracted the attention of the New York Police
Department in the first place. Ovoid bi-Xenon headlights frame the black grille like floodlights. A carbon-
fiber splitter flanks the front like a shield. Fighter-jet-worthy air intakes over the rear engine, and a
carbon wing cut like a blade, demand that other vehicles “Move. Now.”

Its steel-rod-stiff suspension sits as close to the ground as fog; credit its birth at Porsche Racing, which
bestowed upon arrival the adjustable camber, ride height, and sway bar settings that keep it clamped to
the road.
The car is so secure under high speed, so clocked into every input from every finger, that it’s tempting to
try to take it up the side of a wall and drive sideways. Driving it feels like you probably could.
So, yeah, the car catches some rather unnecessary attention. Especially when you have engaged the
button on the center console that reads “Engine Note Enhance.”
As for me, I put a tall-ish photographer friend back there, in addition to Very Tall me and my Also Tall,
bearded boyfriend commanding the cockpit. We were settled enough, with enough space to swim,
happy as clams, through Porsche’s refreshingly minimal cabin.

ESPN Goes Commercial-Free for Rest of 2018 F1 Coverage in U.S.

ESPN will run all of the remaining U.S. qualifying and race telecasts of the 2018 Formula One season
commercial-free.
ESPN joined forces with Sky Sports to deliver broadcast coverage of this year’s campaign. That deal
includes every practice session, qualifying and all 21 races of the year. ESPN also broadcasts Sky Sports’
build-up show ‘On The Grid’, which it will do for every race this year.
Having listened to viewer feedback of the Australian Grand Prix coverage the decision was made to run
commercial-free during qualifying and the race at the following event in Bahrain. This was met positively
by race fans across America and it will be extended for the duration of the current campaign.

ESPN will continue to look at ways to improve its F1 coverage throughout the year.
“We intend to present the F1 races in this way for the balance of the 2018 season,” said Burke Magnus,
ESPN executive vice president, programming & scheduling. “F1 fans are passionate and we listened to a
lot of feedback from them -- the fans are very informed and the feedback we received was both polite
and constructive. It helped us.
“We don’t have a completely finished product but we’re very happy with the way the changes after
Australia were received. We’ll continue to keep working to make it better for the fans.”

Liberty Media took over the commercial rights to Formula 1. Liberty Media plans to offer deluxe
Internet streaming coverage for US$ 8 to 12 per month. NBC Sports objected to this plan and Liberty
Media gave the US broadcast rights to ESPN for the princely sum of FREE.
Rather than cover the racing itself, ESPN rebroadcasts Sky Sports‘ coverage (which is pay-per-view in its
home market).
ESPN’s coverage of the season-opening Australian Grand Prix was widely criticized. Coverage didn’t
begin on schedule and it seems nobody at ESPN even watched the race: they cut for commercials during
some critical events.

Formula 1 to launch F1 TV at Spanish Grand Prix in May

Formula 1, the pinnacle of motor sport, will launch F1 TV in May, ahead of the Formula 1 2018 Gran
Premio De Espana. Until that time, Formula 1 will continue to run a closed beta version of the service to
a small subset of fans for viewing and testing during the upcoming Formula 1 2018 1 Heineken Chinese
Grand Prix and Formula 1 2018 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
F1 TV is F1’s over the top (OTT) subscription video platform, produced in conjunction with world leaders
in the field of streaming video and subscription services. NBC Playmaker, iStreamPlanet, CSG, and
Ostmodern will join Tata in delivering the solution for F1 fans. The launch of the service marks F1’s
biggest investment in its digital transformation to date.
F1 TV will have two service levels at two different price points. F1 TV Pro, the premium tier, will feature
live races and all 20 driver-cameras, as well as side-by-side live race viewing and additional exclusive
feeds. Subscribers will be able to personalise the way they watch a Grand Prix, the content they view
and how and when they access it. All of practice, qualifying and races will be offered live, along with
press conferences and pre- and post-race interviews. Later in the season, the main support series FIA
Formula 2 Championship, GP3 Series and Porsche Supercup will be added to the service.
F1 TV will initially launch on desktop. Apple, Android and Amazon Fire mobile and tablet devices will
launch shortly thereafter. By summer, the service will also be available to fans on Amazon Fire TV,
Android TV and Apple TV. Pricing will be offered on an annual basis of $70-$150, with monthly rates
ranging from $8-12. The service will be priced according to market.
A less expensive, non-live subscription tier, F1 TV Access will provide live race timing data and radio
broadcasts, as well as extended highlights of each session from the race weekend. It will also be
underscored by unprecedented access to archive video content from the amazing historic archive
owned by Formula 1. F1 TV Access will be available on a near-global basis at launch, to complement F1
TV Pro; and will also be added to throughout the season.
In developing the platform, NBC Sports’ Playmaker Media, and iStreamPlanet will act as systems
integrator and video streaming partner. They provide high-quality, turn-key, end-to-end video streaming
solutions for media companies offering their customers the best experience in live video and on-
demand content across all platforms.

CSG will deliver identity management, payment processing and business analysis to support subscriber

CDN and connectivity services to distribute the F1 TV content globally will be supplied by Tata
Communications, Formula 1’s Official Connectivity Provider.

You Can Get Blue California Year of Manufacture Plates
On July 1, 2009, California State Assembly Bill # 462 authorized the California DMV expanded the Year of
Manufacture (YOM) program to allow cars from model years 1963 through 1969 to be registered with
YOM license plates: black plates with yellow letters.

It looks like the DMV has quietly expanded the program to include 1980 and earlier cars. The
application (Reg 352 Rev 1/2017) now reads:
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR APPLICANT
Approval of this application is subject to the following conditions:
1. The YOM plates described in this application must be authentic as originally issued by the
Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The plates must be serviceable and have the approval
of DMV Headquarters. Plates may be restored but not replicated.
2. The YOM program extends only to 1980 and older year model auto, commercial, motorcycle
or trailer vehicles.
3. Two YOM plates are required for qualifying auto and commercial vehicles.
NOTE: In 1945 and 1946, the department issued only one plate for all types of vehicles,
therefore only one plate is required for 1945 and 1946 vehicles.
4. The YOM plate number cannot conflict with any license plate configuration currently in use.
5. Configuration of letters and numbers cannot carry any connotations offensive to good taste
and decency.
6. 1963 and newer YOM plates must be compatible to the vehicle they are being assigned to
(auto plates to autos, commercial plates to commercial vehicles, trailer plates to trailers,
motorcycle plates to motorcycles).

7. 1963 to 1969 year model autos, commercial, trailers, and motorcycles must utilize black
base plates with 6 yellow characters only.
1964 to 1969 year model vehicles must have a 1963 base plate with the corresponding year
sticker. (e.g. a 1965 auto must have a 1963 auto base plate with a 1965 year sticker.)
8. 1970 to 1974 year model commercial vehicles must utilize blue plates with 6 yellow
characters. A 1963 base plate with any 1970’s year sticker is not acceptable for YOM
registration.
9. 1975 to 1980 year model commercial vehicles may utilize blue plates with 6 yellow
characters or blue plates with 7 yellow characters.
10. 1970 to 1979 year model noncommercial vehicles must use blue plates with 6 yellow
characters.
11. 1980 year model noncommercial vehicles may use blue plates with 6 yellow characters or
blue plates with 7 yellow characters.
12. If you wish to retain YOM plates that are assigned to a vehicle in which the vehicle is not
currently registered, a retention fee is due each year.
This is apparently a recent change. The DMV still has California License Plate Data (1914–1972)–
Appendix 1E (dated August 2015) on line which shows the cutoff for passenger car YOM plates as 1969
(1970-1972 for commercial vehicles only).
So, if you want blue plates, find yourself a set (including the year sticker) and head off to the DMV.
Better still, find a good title company go to the DMV for you.

Strong performance of the 911 RSR goes unrewarded

After the Porsche 911 RSR celebrated its first win of the IMSA SportsCar Championship season at the 12
Hours of Sebring, the situation at Long Beach looked just as promising for a long time.
At the shortest race of the year on the narrow street circuit in California, Earl Bamber (New Zealand)
dominated the field until 22 minutes before the end of the 100-minute sprint – only to have to park the
race car from Weissach, which he shared with Laurens Vanthoor (Belgium), in the pits with a broken
suspension. At the wheel of the second 911 RSR fielded by the Porsche GT Team, the
Sebring winners Patrick Pilet (France) and Nick Tandy (Great Britain) secured sixth place in the GTLM
class ahead of their teammates.
To the picture-postcard backdrop of sun, sea and palms, which makes Long Beach Monte Carlo of the
USA, the 911 RSR took off from the front grid row for the first time this season. Laurens Vanthoor used
this advantage to promptly snatch the lead in lap one. He fended off his pursuers repeated attacks to
hold on to his spot. After 38 minutes he handed the #912 Porsche 911 RSR off to Earl Bamber during a
safety car phase. The New Zealander rejoined the race as second behind a BMW that had pitted earlier,
and immediately closed the gap to the leader. Putting in an inspired overtaking manoeuvre, he
recaptured the lead and even managed to pull clear from the rest of the strong GTLM field before a
damaged suspension forced him into retirement. In the #911 Porsche 911 RSR, Patrick Pilet and Nick
Tandy never really regained their stride in the race due to various incidents after their first pit stop.

spectators like on a street circuit. With our #912 contender, Laurens and Earl did everything right.

Laurens made a cracking start and immediately took the lead. Earl also fought his way back to the front
after the pit stop. Both of them drove an immaculate race, and also found brilliant solutions to difficult
situations during some close calls with competitors. For a street race, they were in a very comfortable
lead when the damage to the suspension, which could have been caused by contact, quite possibly cost
them the win. That was simply bad luck. The race for the #911 car was influenced by a rear-ender. There
wasn’t a lot Nick and Patrick could do after that. All in all, we can say that the performance of the 911
RSR was good and that the team did a great job. We’ll take these positive impressions with us to the
next race in Mid-Ohio.”
Nick Tandy (911 RSR #911): “When I wanted to leave the pits after our stop, another car got in the way.
We could have rejoined the field in second place. If this had happened, the outcome would definitely
have been different for us. The additional pit stop that cost us a lap then finished us off. Still, our 911
RSR was fast and the team, as usual, gave us great support.”
Earl Bamber (911 RSR #912): “Our 911 RSR ran very well on this track. The guys did one quick pit stop
and we were holding a comfortable lead. But then something went wrong with the suspension and that
was the end of our race. It’s a shame for the team, but such things happen. Now we’ll be back to attack
in Mid-Ohio.”

Review of the Qualifying
Up until the very last lap of the gripping qualifying for round three of the IMSA SportCar Championship,
Laurens Vanthoor (Belgium), who shares the #912 Porsche 911 RSR with Earl Bamber (New Zealand),
defended the fastest time in the GTLM class. The race car from Weissach, which received an optimised
setup and further improvements to the reliability for its second racing season, was a mere 0.144

seconds shy of posting its first 2018 pole position. In the second 911 RSR (#911), Patrick Pilet (France)
clocked the third quickest time on the 3.167-kilometre racetrack in the port area, and consequently
rounded off the best qualifying performance for the Porsche GT Team so far this season. Pilet’s
teammate for the race is Nick Tandy (Great Britain).
Qualifying quotes
Dr Frank-Steffen Walliser, Vice President Motorsport and GT Cars: “It’s a little upsetting to miss out on
pole position in the last lap of the qualifying. Still, we’ve secured a very good starting position for the
race. Long Beach is a city race with very few chances to overtake. That makes it all the more important
to start from as far up the grid as possible. For the race we now just have to do everything right
strategically. I’m very satisfied.”
Patrick Pilet (911 RSR #911): “This is a great result for Porsche. The field is extremely tight. The balance
of our 911 RSR was very good this morning during the first practice session, however in the qualifying I
had slight understeer. But we’ll get that sorted out before the start of the race. Taking up the race from
the first two grid rows opens up all possibilities for us.”
Laurens Vanthoor (911 RSR #912): “When you’re the fastest over the entire session obviously you also
want to be on pole. But unfortunately we lost it in the last lap. Still, we can be happy with this result. In
the race I’ll try to stay out of any trouble. The tiniest error on this track has immediate consequences.”

IMSA SportsCar Championship
The IMSA SportsCar Championship, a sports car race series contested in the USA and Canada, was run in
2014 for the first time. The series was formed from the merger of the American Le Mans Series and the
Grand-Am Series. Sports prototypes and sports cars start in three different classes: GTLM (GT Le Mans),
GTD (GT Daytona) and P (Prototype). The Porsche 911 RSR runs in the GTLM class, with the Porsche 911
GT3 R contesting the GTD class.

Porsche provides WEC safety cars and support cars until 2020

From now until 2020, the Porsche 911 Turbo will be the safety car for the Sports Car World Endurance
Championship (WEC).
The all-wheel-drive 911 produces 540 hp (397 kW; Fuel consumption combined 9.1 l/100 km; CO2
emissions 212 g/km) and sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 3.0 seconds. Technologically, the safety car
corresponds largely to the production vehicle. Only a few racespecific modifications were added, such as
the light bar on the roof and a radio for contacting the race director, with the brakes and suspension
optimised for the racetrack. The matte-black design with glossy red stripes is modelled on the Porsche
emblem design of the factory race cars.

A light bar on the roof was added
Porsche not only supplies the safety car for the FIA WEC, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, until 2020,
but also provides eleven intervention vehicles. Two Porsche 911 Turbo will travel as safety cars to all
WEC rounds worldwide. Three 911 Turbo head to Le Mans as permanent vehicles. Furthermore, various
Porsche models are provided for motor racing medics and track safety personnel.
911 Turbo: Ideal prerequisites for the task
The race director deploys the safety car whenever the field needs to bunch up in the event of dangerous
situations. The 911 Turbo production vehicle possesses the ideal prerequisites for this task: The 3.8-litre
six-cylinder engine catapults the Turbo to a top speed of 320 km/h, with the ex-works Sport Chrono
Package ensuring the best possible intermediate acceleration.
The 911 Turbo generation’s close affiliation to motor racing is also highlighted by the way the seven-
speed PDK dual-clutch transmission is operated: In manual mode, the shift lever is actuated like in a race
car. Paddle shifts mounted on the steering wheel are another standard feature. For its racetrack job as
support to the World Endurance Championship, the vehicle is fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres
on standard 20-inch rims. Full-shell racing seats with six-point harnesses for the driver and front
passenger, a monitor to display track signals, a radio to contact the race director, a signal light system on
the roof as well as flashing LED lights at the front and rear have been added to the intervention car for
its racetrack duties.

Only a few race-specific modifications were added
“We’re delighted to have the chance to supply the safety cars and intervention vehicles for the Sports
Car World Endurance
Championship until 2020. As a sports car manufacturer, it was rather easy for us to find a suitable car.
Basically, many of our production models fit the bill for this special task on the race circuit. Ultimately,
however, we chose the Porsche 911 as the safety car. In total, 16 vehicles from different model lines will
fulfil different functions in the WEC,” explains Alexander Stehlig, who is responsible for the safety car
project on behalf of Porsche AG as the GT Motorsport programme manager.
