Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time: Year B

Introduction: In 1 Kings, we meet a complaining prophet, Elijah, who feels that the Lord has let him down. However, the Lord doesn’t give up on him - grace is a constant even in his despair. In John there is the beginning of some complaining or “murmuring” among a number of Jesus hearers. Their resistance does not prevent Jesus from offering them more “food for thought” as he continues to stretch their understanding and faith to new limits. In the Ephesian community life in Christ invites a further consideration of his self-gift as an example of how its members should live.

First Reading: Kings 19: 4-8 Elijah’s complaint to the Lord comes from his exhaustion and fear as he flees from the wrath of King Ahab whose worship of Baal he denounced. Despite that, the Lord provides him with enough food and drink to resume his journey. Eventually this will lead him to a profound encounter with the Living God on Mount Horeb.

Second Reading: Ephesians 4: 30-5:2 Ephesians continues with its exposition of what life in Christ demands of the community, with a reminder that their experience of forgiveness calls them to forgive one another. Christ’s self-gift is a model for living in the community of faith.

Gospel: John 6: 41-55 Complaints, murmuring, questions from others, ongoing reminders of the layered meanings of this text, should not distract us from the heart of Jesus’ teaching that he is “the bread… from heaven”, the “bread of life”, the “living bread” who offers eternal life to those who believe. Rather they invite us to look at what we believe.

History of Confirmation

At Our lady of Lourdes and Our Lady of Fatima we have 120 children preparing for confirmation, may we please pray for them......

At the beginning of our Christian community there was not two sacraments, one called Confirmation and one called Baptism. In fact, there were not any sacraments at all. Sacraments are rites, rituals, that we, the Christian Community have developed over the two thousand years of our history to help us to name and celebrate God’s presence and action with us at important times in our lives. Jesus did not invent any sacraments - we have developed these special rituals ourselves.

At the beginning of the Christian Community, the way that adults were welcomed into the community was with a ceremony called the Ceremony of Christian Initiation and this ceremony included what we have come to know as three separate sacraments, but back then it was one big ceremony.

So what would happen was this: a person - an adult - would decided that they wanted to become a Christian. They would have a time of preparation and then often on an Easter Saturday night, they would be initiated into the group.

The first thing that would happen to the person would be that they would be taken down into a pool of water - a bit like a spa - and he or she would be immersed three times.

“I baptise you in the name of the Father (immerse), And of the Son (immerse), And of the Holy Spirit (immerse)”

And if the person wasn’t drowned at the end of being immersed three times, he or she would be brought up out of the water, given clean dry clothes, anointed with oil and then receive the Eucharist for the first time. ( continued next week...)
