THE CATHEDRAL PARISH AND CATHEDRAL BASILICA OF SAINT AUGUSTINE ST. AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA THE THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 11, 2016

Mission Statement of the Cathedral Parish St. Augustine, Florida

We are Christ’s eyes, ears, mouth, hands, and feet -

sent out to do justice, especially for the poor and oppressed,

to minister to the needs of the community, to be faithful stewards of God’s creation -

awakening faith among the hopeless, and promoting life even within the culture

of death.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

I have returned from my sabbatical and it is good to be back home -- not only to my home town of St. Augustine, but also back home to the community of faith of the Cathedral Parish. Thank you for your prayers and, as well, the many well-wishes several of you sent via email and Facebook during my time away.

On this first weekend that I'm back, it's already the Third Sun-day of Advent. The disciples of John the Baptist are having an interesting conversation with Jesus about whether He is "the One" while the author of the Letter of St. James is pleading with his hearers to "be patient until the coming of the Lord." While the presence of Jesus is always assured for us in the Eucharist, the Advent call to be ready for the "coming of the Lord" at the end of time is definitely before us, too, and patience is a must as we wait.

As I travelled throughout Italy and into Greece during my sabbatical, one constant image would appear -- that of Christ Pan-tocrator. (One of the icons I saw in Greece at the Byzantine Muse-um there is pictured above.) That word, Pantocrator, comes from the Greek meaning "ruler of all" and the many mosaics and icons one finds of Jesus in churches under this title serve as a reminder that as "ruler of all," He will also appear at the end of time as judge of all. Patience and readiness become the response Chris-tian disciples have to this wondrous mystery.

This Tuesday evening, December 13 at 7:00 p.m., the Cathe-dral will hold its annual Advent Penance Service. Come with the confidence that a merciful Christ wants to offer you His compas-sion and mercy now in the Sacrament of Penance and Reconcilia-tion. So in patience we await His second coming; with open hearts we also receive His tender mercy now.

Love, Father Tom

Visit the St. Vincent de Paul Christmas tree and share your giving spirit! Share your Christmas giving spirit with the com-munity by visiting St. Vincent de Paul and check-ing out their Christmas tree filled with great gift ideas for local children. These unwrapped gifts will be given to the elves at Catholic Charities who, of

course, will be assisting Santa again this year. These gifts help local families as well as families affected by the hurricane. Gifts can be returned to St. Vincent de Paul at 19 McMillan Street or Catholic Charities at 3940 Lewis Speedway (Davis Bldg.) by December 14. We wish you and your family all the blessings of this Christmas season.

MINISTRY to the “DEAR NEIGHBOR” Immediately after Hurricane Matthew, the Sisters of St. Joseph were able to prepare “Dear Neighbor” pack-ages for distribution to those in great need of basic supplies at the time. The Sisters distributed almost

1,000 emergency supply and hygiene packages thanks to so many generous people! These hygiene packages will now be extended for distribution to homeless, farmworkers, Catholic Charities and Din-ing with Dignity recipients, etc.; wherever we find the needs. You are invited to participate in our ministry by donations of travel size hygiene supplies. They may be placed in the box at the back of the Cathedral. Items will be picked up each day, sorted, packaged and delivered by the Sisters.

Requested items include travel size combs, brushes, tooth paste, tooth brushes, body powder, baby wipes, deodorant, hand sanitizer, soap, Kleenex, and insect repellent; pints of bottled water; or money to purchase items. We are grateful for the generosity that we have been receiving!

For young adults: Day of Reflection at La Leche Shrine, December 17, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. All young adults are invited to a Day of Reflection on The Joy of Christmas on Saturday, December 7 at the Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche. The day will include Mass and Morning Prayer, talks and reflections, Reconciliation, Vigil Mass, and end with a social gather-ing. For more information, contact the diocesan Young Adult Office at [email protected]. Cost: $10/includes lunch.

New understanding of the Gospel of St. Mark and dinner with Bishop Estévez, December 20 The Gospel of St. Mark was the first to be written, but it is practical-ly the one which is known the least. Why is there such interest in understanding St. Mark’s insights? In what ways are his writings different from the other three Gospels? Why is his Gospel so rele-vant to our own situation? Come and see! This event will be held at Marywood Retreat Center on Tuesday, December 20. Registration starts at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. The cost is $25. Please call (904) 287-2525 to register.

December 16, 8 p.m.: Guitarist Stephen Robinson to perform in the Cathedral

Heralded by The New York Times for his “effortless virtuosity with intelligence and good taste,” and by The Tallahassee Democrat for his “sweet, pure sound, technique to burn and strong sense of musical and poetic phrasing,” Stephen Robinson tours extensively as a recitalist, collaborative artist, and orchestral soloist. He has appeared as guest soloist with orchestras including the Cincinnati Symphony and Boston Pops Orchestras, and conducts master clas-ses at leading musical institutions and festivals worldwide.

A native of New York, Stephen Robinson began his guitar stud-ies with Bruce Holzman at Florida State University, and worked closely with Andrés Segovia, who called him “a magnificent guitar-ist, one of the most brilliant guitarists of our times.” After pursuing graduate work at the Yale School of Music, Florida State University awarded Robinson the first Doctor of Music Degree in Guitar Per-formance. Mr. Robinson is Professor of Music at Stetson University, where he founded and has directed the guitar program since 1983.

The concert is free; a goodwill offering will be taken. Contact Dr. Bernie Sans, [email protected], for more information.

Stewardship reflection for the Third Sunday of Advent

Today, the Third Sunday of Advent, we celebrate Gaudete Sun-day. Gaudete means “rejoice.” Although Advent is a season of peni-tence and preparation, today is always set aside by the Church to relax and rejoice in the Lord. All of our readings today deal with Christian joy. This may seem not in keeping with the overall mood encouraged for Advent, but it is most definitely in keeping with what we need to feel, and it is definitely appropriate for those who embrace stewardship as a way of life.

Stewardship is, of course, based upon an “attitude of gratitude” and today is a day to focus on the joy that results from that grati-tude. Father Henri Nouwen was a well known Catholic priest, pro-fessor, writer, and theologian. In describing the significance of this particular day, Father Nouwen clarified the difference between joy and happiness. He said, “While happiness is dependent upon exter-nal conditions, joy is the experience of knowing that we are uncon-ditionally loved by God and nothing — not sickness, failure, emo-tional distress, oppression, war, or even death — can take that love away. Joy can be present in the midst of sadness.”

This “joy” that is reflected in lives of stewardship was also em-phasized by Pope Francis, who said in his homily for Gaudete Sun-day in 2014, “Today is a day of joy. Rather than fretting about all we have not done or accomplished to prepare for Christmas during Advent, we need to think of all the good things God, and life, has given us.”

Hope in the coming kingdom is already beginning to take root in the hearts of people. The radical transformation of the

world in the Paschal Mystery of the Lord gives full meaning to the efforts of people, and in particular of the young, to lessen injustice, violence and hatred and to advance all together in

justice, freedom, kinship and love.

Every Saturday, 2:30-3:30 p.m.: Centering Prayer hosted by Sister Margaret Zapf, SSJ Centering prayer is a method of silent prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplative prayer, in which we experience God’s presence within us, closer than breathing, closer than thinking, closer than consciousness itself. This method of prayer is both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. Call (904) 824-1752 to register or at www.ssjfl.org.

Cathedral Office/Rectory visitor parking We realize that getting to the Cathedral office/rectory is becoming harder

and harder. Therefore, we have changed the location of parking spaces for those needing to visit the office/rectory during weekday office hours.

The parking spaces for those who have an appointment or need to take care of things at the office/rectory are located in the “Bank of America” lot. There are two spots reserved. Just mention to the attendant that you have to go to the office/rectory. They will direct you to the appropriate spaces. These spots are for office/rectory visitors only and are intended to be short term.

We think you will find these spots much more parishioner friendly than past office parking spots. Please call ahead if you have mobility issues and we’ll try to help with a closer spot.

NEED PRAYERS? If you or someone you
