CHURCH AND PARISH POLICIES Many common Church and parish policies are listed in the

bulletin. If you have any questions please give us a call; our parish staff is here to help you.

PARISH REGISTRATION All are most welcome here at St. Michael the Archangel Parish. If you are living within our boundaries, please register as soon as possible. If you are leaving the parish or just changing your address, please notify the parish office. If you are moving out of the area, please register in a parish where you live as soon as possible; this is especially important for young adults who have finished college and now live in another area. If you need help finding a parish in your new locale, we will gladly assist you.

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Baptisms usually take place on the first Sunday of each month during the 10:00 AM Mass, unless the liturgical calendar dictates another Sunday. Baptismal Classes are held at convenience of priest and family. Parents must be registered parishioners. Contact the parish office to make arrangements for the Baptism. Please pay close attention to the requirements for Godparents (see below). If there is any doubt or you need a further explanation please contact us.

TO BE A SPONSOR FOR BAPTISM OR CONFIRMATION ?Be an active, registered member of the parish ?Be at least 16 years of age, baptized and confirmed ?Receive Holy Eucharist and Penance on a regular basis ? If married, be married under the auspices of the Catholic Church ?Strive to live, publicly and privately, the Lord’s Commandments ?Request sponsorship certificate no less than three weeks before the

conferral of the sacrament.

SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY Couples contemplating marriage should contact Father Zelonis at least one year in advance of the date of the intended marriage to begin sacramental preparations. Church date and arrangements MUST precede all other wedding plans.

VISITATION OF THE SICK Please notify the parish office if someone in your family is in the hospital, as Fr. Zelonis visits every other week and by request. Also, Father and Sr. Catherine take Holy Communion monthly to those who are homebound and cannot attend Church.

HANDING ON OUR CATHOLIC FAITH Because parents have given life to their children, they have the gravest obligation of educating them in our Catholic faith. For those children who go to public schools, our CCD Program is the means to help parents meet this responsibility. You may enroll your child for CCD at any time but we prefer you register for the following year each May. Special prep for all youth preparing for First Penance, First Holy Communion and Confirmation is offered and required.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS We are happy to welcome young adults “back home” for special occasions such as weddings and baptisms; however, non-parishioners who desire to celebrate a baptism or wedding here will need the permission of their pastor.

Dear Family, (The following is an edited excerpt of an article I wrote several years ago for The A.D. Times. I present this text as the first of a miniseries on “The Spirituality of Recovery as the Recovery of Spirituality.”) “Being in the image of God the human individual possesses the dig-nity of a person, who is not just something, but someone. He is capa-ble of self-knowledge, of self-possession and of freely giving him-self and entering into communion with other persons. And he is called by grace to a covenant with his Creator, to offer him a re-sponse of faith and love that no other creature can give in his stead” (CCC 357). Saint Irenaeus famously said, “The glory of God is man fully alive.” We bear witness to God’s beauty, wisdom, and power by firing on all cylinders—i.e. seeking to know and appreciate ourselves, and giving ourselves to God and others in prayer and service. But we human beings tend to misfire—sometimes dangerously—by not dedicating our intellects to truth, our wills to goodness, and our senses to beauty. God gave us passions, or emotions, that are meant to move us in good directions. Instead, however, we allow our emo-tions to lead us, often without a worthy goal or path. Saint Paul outlined the situation in last week’s second reading as that which our first parents set into motion. It chiefly manifests as inordi-nate desires and the bodily and mental tendency to such desires (“concupiscence”). In another place he lamented it thus: “The will-ing is ready at hand, but doing the good is not. For I do not do the good I want, but I do the evil I do not want” (Rom 7:18-19). As members of the human community, of our own families, schools, neighborhoods, and workplaces, we can’t help but take all sorts of cues from each other. Our negative attitudes, our noxious attach-ments to substances (alcohol, drugs) or activities (gambling, overeat-ing, or lust), though undertaken at some point by free will, found their inspiration elsewhere, and we can trace it with honest effort. While there may be some value to recognizing where our crippling debilitations and pesky shortcomings came from, the information worth seeking is what to do with them—what to do with us. At heart we human beings crave a discipline to refashion us, so that, while substantially remaining the same, our lives might align ever more closely with our God-given dignity. In the mid 1930s, a stockbroker and a physician learned that they shared a common plight: drinking alcohol catalyzed within them an uncontrollable physical craving and mental obsession that alcohol alone seemed to satisfy, though at a most undesirable cost. Their companionship fostered freedom through daily self-reform, prayer, and service. Soon others would join them regularly to share the fruits of God’s work in their lives and to guide neophytes in sobriety-supporting spiritual disciplines, employing a twelve-step process. So began the fellowship and program of Alcoholics Anonymous, which continues to carry a message of hope and enthusiasm to millions. Sufferers of other addictions, and their beleaguered loved ones, have come to learn that AA’s methods also work for their madness, and have formed fellowships to help them with their own maladies. (Continued 7-9-17) Yours, Father Christopher M. Zelonis
