“Quality is everyone's responsibility.” - W Edwards Deming

This week’s virtue is compassion. Compassion is having kind feelings toward someone

who is hurt or troubled. It is caring deeply and wanting to help, even if you don’t know

them. Compassion is being kind and forgiving to someone who may have hurt you.

Please consider taking a few minutes to discuss what it means to be compassionate

with your child/ren over the next week.

Today is Tuckshop Day, the special day each year when school

communities have the perfect opportunity to show their appreciation to

their Tuckshop Convenors and Volunteers who help ensure our learners

have access to healthy food and drinks. A special thankyou is extended

to our Tuckshop Convenor, Ms Charmaine Case and her regular

volunteers who provide a healthy selction of foods and drinks for our learners and staff.

Well done and thank you.

Term Four is picking up at an incredible pace and next week marks the half way point.

Now may be an opportune time for all families to check that our Office has your most

current contact details to prepare for the emailing of End of Semester Two Report Cards

later in the year. If you know of any families who are considering enrolling with us in 2020,

(particularly families with Prep Year learners), please encourage them to make contact

as soon as possible so they can be accommodated in our planning for 2020.

Last week, the school took delivery of a suite of new interactive panels on adjustable

stands. These panels were scheduled for replacement this year as part of our annual

asset replacement schedule. For some classrooms, these are replacing interactive

whiteboards that were first installed in 2007. Our teachers and learners deserve the very

best and it can be frustrating and challenging not having access to the resources and

tools required to deliver a twenty first century education. Two new interactive panels

have been installed in the Zone 21 Theatre and Computer Centre, and already, this has

had a marked impact on these spaces and the teaching opportunities it offers.

On behalf of our entire Parkhurst State School Teaching Team, I would like to extend

their appreciation to all families who took the time on World Teachers’ Day to

acknowledge the work they do every day in the classrooms.

Until next week,

Lyle Walker

–It is Term Four and that means Jump Jam once

again. Learning commences at 8:45 a.m. every day.

All Queensland Schools are required to implement

a daily Smart Moves to provide opportunities for all

learners to engage in moderate physical activity

that raises the heart rate. At Parkhurst State School,

this takes the form of Jump Jam in the Summer

Months. Smart Moves is a daily, fifteen minute

investment in every learner and staff member’s

health and all parents and carers are encouraged

to join in too.

The Preparatory Year is compulsory in all Queensland

schools. Enrolment and Information Packages are

available from our Office. If your child/ren turn five by

June 30th 2020, he/she is eligible to enrol. The table

below is a guide to assist families to determine Prep

eligibility.

As per Parkhurst State School’s Enrolment

Management Plan, only students whose principal

place of residence is within the school’s catchment

area will be eligible for enrolment at the school.

Students who are siblings of current students at the

school are eligible for enrolment. We are requesting

that younger siblings of students who are eligible for

Prep in 2020 to complete an Enrolment Package

and lodge with the Office as soon as possible.

For an Enrolment Package and information, please

visit or call our Office on 07 4924 6555 or click on the

‘Enrol Now’ tab on our website.

All parents and carers have an opportunity each

year to provide specific information to assist in the

placement of learners to classes in 2020. This is not an

opportunity for parents and carers to request specific

teachers, just as classroom teachers are not able to

request specific learners to be or not to be in their

class. It is however an opportunity for parents and

carers to provide specific information to guide our

Teacher Teams to make informed decisions to ensure

the full range of learners’ needs are considered and

catered for. A template is included in this Newsletter

and also available from from the Office. The deadline

for the return of all forms in Friday November 08th 2019.

The school Leadership Team is currently working with

our Regional Human Resource Team to accurately

determine our 2020 staffing requirements based on

our predicted student enrolments. If you are leaving

Parkhurst State School at the end of the year or know

someone who is intending to enrol with us, we need

to know as soon as possible so this information can be

taken into account.

Are you making every

day of learning count ?

Term Four envelopes for Parkhurst State School

Parents and Citizens’ Association’s Voluntary

Contribution Program will soon be sent home.

Families can voluntarily contribute $25 per Term or

$100 for the year in lieu of contributing financially or

assisting in person with ongoing fundraisers. The

Parkhurst P&C appreciate and understand that

families are ‘time poor’ and may not always be

available to assist with fundraisers, activities and

events. Each term, for every contribution made,

families will go into the draw for an amazing prize,

drawn at the final Assembly of Excellence for 2019.

If you have paid for an entire year, you are

automatically in the draw every Term. With 306

families, if every family supported this initiative, just

over $30 000 could be raised in one year. If you

have any questions regarding any aspect of the

Program, please contact the Office or email

[email protected].

As we approach the end of the school year, now

more than ever it is important for us all to ensure our

high expectations are not compromised,

particularly around attendance and uniforms. At

Parkhurst State School, every learner is required to

wear their correct school uniform every day. Sports

Shirts can be worn on Wednesdays and our Year

Sixes can wear their Senior Shirts on Thursdays.

It is expected that shorts, skorts and skirts are at an

acceptable and modest length, particularly for our

Year 4-6 learners. Tights, ‘skins’ and denim items

have never been part of the Parkhurst State School

Uniform and should not be worn. With Summer,

comes our annual Swimming Program for all

learners from Prep to Year Six. It is essential that all

learners wear appropriate swimwear that is sunsafe,

including the wearing of rash vests and or swimcaps

for female learners.

We encourage all learners to wear white socks and

shoes that promote comfort and future growth.

Please never hesitate to contact our Office ladies if

you have any specific questions.

In 2019, reading is our explicit improvement agenda

and is delivered through …

‐ the reading demands of the Australian

Curriculum

‐ quality and consistent teaching

‐ building the capability (knowledge and skills) of

our staff through professional learning, coaching

and mentoring

‐ collaboration within and beyond the school

‐ feedback regarding our teaching

Reading is a life skill and a significant part of the

general capability of literacy. Reading is aligned to

writing and requires a deep knowledge and

undestanding of texts, their structures and the

features and elements authors use.

Our 2019 Explicit Reading Agenda reflects the

needs of our learners, staff and community and the

data that informs what we do, when we do it and

how it is delivered across the school with precision

and impact.

At Parkhurst State School, the SCORE strategy

underpins our school Reading Program. Each letter

of the word SCORE stands for a strategy to apply to

texts when we read. The mini poster below is one of

a set to assist parents and carers to apply the

elements of the SCORE when reading at home.

Read and Reflect is the fourth element of the SCORE

Reading Framework and occurs after a text is read.

Young readers are encouraged to apply this

strategy to determine what the author's purpose

and message was and just how they wanted their

readers to react and respond. A part of this element

of SCORE is encouraging readers to reflect on their

own reading, the strategies they use to identify

tricky words and how they are progressing as a

reader. This mini poster will assist as a guide during

the Read and Reflect phase following the reading

(or viewing) of a text.

Invitations have now been sent out to all 2020 Prep

Year learners to attend one of our two Orientation

Days. These days are an excellent opportunity for all

learners to meet their 2020 teachers, experience

what Prep entails, learn about our daily school

routines, discover areas of the school and get fitted

for their brand new uniforms.

The 2019 Prep Orientation Days are Tuesday

November 26th 2019 or Tuesday December 03rd 2019.

If the allocated date does not suit your family,

please contact the Office.

This is the fifteenth year that Parkhurst learners have

had the chance to sing their heart out as in the old

‘Australian Idol’ Competition. Just like the show, it

brings all kinds of surprises out of the woodwork.

There are two sections.

Junior (Years 1-3) and Senior (Years 4-6).

It is $2 to enter. The Nomination Forms are available

for all willing singers. Every competitor chooses their

favourite song and Mr St Henry then converts it to a

karaoke track. Competitors sing for approximately

two minutes in front of two judges and the whole

school. The judging criteria is specific and detailed

with a score being given out of fifty for criteria such

as vocal quality, confidence, lyric memory,

movement, dress, and rhythmic alignment.

Parkhurst Idol Heats

Singers will need to bring their outfit to the Music

Centre on the morning of their Heat at 10:45 a.m. to

get ready. The whole school will be at the Assembly

Area from 11:00 a.m. to cheer on the competitiors.

Everyone is welcome to watch the entertainment.

Singers perform two minutes of their chosen karaoke

song, then the judges will give them a score and

feedback. The top four singers in each heat

progress to the final.

The daily efforts of our Tuckshop Convenor, Ms

Charmaine Case and her many volunteers who

support our learners and our school has been

tremendous this year. We should remember to say

please and thank you every day, but on Tuckshop

Day, Friday November 01st 2019, we will say a very

special thank you to this wonderful team. Our

Tuckshop provides a great service that helps out

families who have to juggle many different tasks at

the start of each day. Fine food helps learners to

study and play through the day. We don’t take their

hard work for granted and it is great to see parents

and carers putting up their hands and getting

involved with our school. Thank you everyone.

Our learners look forward to school Discos. This Term,

the Disco is scheduled for Friday November 15th

2019 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and the theme is

‘Masquerade’. All learners are reminded of our strict,

‘No Mobile Phone’ policy and that this event is for

current Parkhurst State School learners only. Gates

will open at 5:45 p.m. and close at 6:15 p.m. to

ensure the safety and security of all attending. A

Sausage Sizzle and Drinks Station will be operating

as well as the regular ‘Treats Stall’. Tickets go on sale

next week outside the Office.

Our annual Book Fair commenced on Thursday this

week and will be held over the next few days in the

PAWS Reading Centre. All learners have visited

already and made their ‘Wish Lists’. Book Fair is open

before and after school and all families are

encouraged to visit (and purchase !)

PARKHURST STATE SCHOOL

Parkhurst State School proudly offers a range of classroom structures with a clear goal to place all

learners in environments that best suit their individual learning needs. Class structures are determined

by the number of learners in a Year Level, the ability to provide capacity for enrolment growth and

meeting the class size targets of twenty five students in Prep to Year Three classes and twenty eight

students in Years Four to Six. It is envisaged that our 2020 Learning Neighbourhoods and related class

structures will be communicated towards the end of Term Four.

The purpose of this form is to provide all parents and carers with an opportunity to outline any

specific information regarding their child/ren that will assist in their placement in classes in 2020.

This form should not be used to submit specific requests or preferences. Forms returned with a

request for a specific teacher will not be considered.

The information provided is confidential and should be returned attention ‘The Principal’ no later
