Next Sunday: Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Wisdom 12: 13, 16-19; Romans 8: 26-7; Matthew 13: 24-43

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time: Year A

Introduction: We are reminded today that the Word of God is something alive and active, it can penetrate our minds and hearts. The Word of God is Jesus himself, the Word of God is the Risen Christ present when the Scriptures are proclaimed.

First Reading: Isaiah 55: 10-11 The word uttered by the Lord is always productive as is the rain that falls onto the dry earth making it yield and giving growth to the seed.

Second Reading: Romans 8: 18-23 All of creation is groaning in one big act of birth, waiting to be set free within the glory that awaits us.

Gospel: Matthew 16: 13-19 Jesus uses wonderful agricultural images to make it very clear to his listeners how to nurture the word of God.

‘THE JOY OF LOVE’ FROM POPE FRANCIS The Experiences and Challenges of Families

Some Challenges

50. The responses given to the two pre-synodal consultations spoke of a great variety of situations and the new challenges that they pose. In addition to those already mentioned, many of the respondents pointed to the problems families face in raising children. In many cases, parents come home exhausted, not wanting to talk, and many families no longer even share a common meal. Distractions abound, including an addiction to television. This makes it all the more difficult for parents to hand on the faith to their children. Other responses pointed to the effect of severe stress on families, who often seem more caught up with securing their future than with enjoying the present. This is a broader cultural problem, aggravated by fears about steady employment, finances and the future of children.
