Vaping and youth: What’s the issue?
A dangerous trend has recently turned into an epidemic. Since the popularization of vaping pens and smoking behaviour, youth vaping and smoking rates have risen for the first time in a generation. In a single year (2017-2018), youth vaping among 16-19-year old dramatically increased by 74%. The inhalation of vaping products has caused irreversible lung damage, disease, and even death.
The Alberta Lung Association will be at St. Bonaventure on the afternoon of October 2nd. They will be presenting to each grade about the risks of tobacco and vaping. Check out www.lung.ca for further resources and information.
Band On Sept. 26 our Falcon’s beginner band enjoyed a beginner bootcamp in collaboration with three south Calgary Catholic schools. Every got a small group lesson with a professional musician on their instrument. They learned how to assemble, maintain, create an embouchure, and correctly play the first notes. Our band students can now take their instruments home to practice. You are all off to a great start!

Orange Shirt Day on Monday Orange Shirt Day (Monday, September 30th) is a day when we honour the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada and learn more about the history of those schools. The “orange shirt” in Orange Shirt Day refers to the new shirt that Phyllis Webstad was given to her by her grandmother for her first day of school at St. Joseph’s Mission residential school in British Columbia. When Phyllis got to school, they took away her clothes, including her new shirt. It was never returned. On Monday, St. Bonaventure students will learn about the history of residential schools and the background about the Orange Shirt day. Please honour the spirit of day by wearing anything orange.
Canteen Update-Subway off the Menu
Due to low sales, the Canteen will no longer be serving Subway on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. As a school, we will reevaluate our meal options for those days. As a school, we will continue to offer Healthy Hunger on the first day of the week and Boston Pizza every Friday. There will be also an assortment of muffins, chips, granola bars, and snacks offered at the canteen every day. Thanks for your understanding as we work through our canteen food service options.

Counsellor Column…
Oct. Newsletter-Counsellor’s Column
As shared in our first newsletter, this column is devoted to building our understanding of growth mindset. The messages that young people get (and see) from adults at home and school will greatly impact their own perspectives.
If you missed the first video…please take a look at it (here)! Do you share this expert’s opinion about middle school being a great time for practicing failure? How do you manage your own failures? Your kiddos learn from you!
This month’s video looks at the power of the word YET. More specifically at the power of “not yet” versus the tyranny of NOW. Imagine a report card, instead of listing a grade, listing “not yet”! Check out this informative video with Carol Dweck herself (the researcher who brought us this concept of growth versus fixed mindsets)…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiiEeMN7vbQ
Please let me know if you’d like to chat about any of these concepts!
Kindly,
Mrs. Badour
