MAIN ACTIVITYA limerick is a light-hearted, funny poem with five lines. Limericks were made

famous by Edward Lear, a famous author who wrote an entire book of silly limericks called ‘A Book of Nonsense’ in 1846. Limericks always have the rhyming

scheme A-A-B-B-A. So lines 1,2 and 5 rhyme with each other and lines 3 and 4 rhyme with each other. Typically the 1st, 2nd and 5th lines all have the same number of syllables (usually 8 or 9). The 3rd and 4th lines also have the same

number of syllables, usually they have 5 or 6 syllables.

CAN YOU WRITE YOUR OWN LIMERICK BASED ON A BOOK YOU HAVE READ THIS WEEK?

Who was horribly bored by a bee. When they said, “Does it buzz?”

He replied, “Yes it does!”“It’s a regular brute of a bee!”

The first line of a limerick poem usually begins with

‘There was a…’ and ends with a name, person or

place. For example, ‘There was an old man

from Milan.’

Limericks tell a story that is

humorous, but they don’t necessarily

make sense!

Think of different words to rhyme

with your first line’s ending.
