and press conference to recognize themany people who have helped FatherTom raise awareness about Parkinson’sdisease and acknowledge those workingtowards finding a cure. At the press con-ference, scientists who received grantsfrom the Hartman Foundation presentedtheir newest developments.

Dr. Eidelberg moderated the press conference andshared his thoughts: “The thread that connects all of usscientists is the common goal we share to move the fieldof Parkinson’s research forward. What we have been ableto accomplish by this growing national umbrella of col-laborators is unique. Working together we are able tocapitalize on years of expertise and neuroscience, takethe ideas of many years of deep thought, cultivation andhours of research and push the envelope to solve theproblems of Parkinson’s disease.”
Father Tom acknowledged the doctors, saying “All Idid was get these wonderful and brilliant people to-gether from different faiths, and invited them to be a partof this challenging and important venture.” Continued

formance by Multi-Grammy award winningartist Jimmy Webb who performed several ofhis greatest hits. The Hartman PhilanthropicLeadership Award was presented by LauraSavini, vice president and on-air host ofWLIW, to Susan Lucci, Emmy award-winningactress, for her work in raising awareness ofthe disease and her support for finding acure. Louis DeCaro, an art teacher who suf-fers from Parkinson’s, received the FatherTom’s Spirit Award. The Spirit award is givento an individual with Parkinson’s who coura-geously continues to promote the fight to finda cure for this debilitating disease. DeCaroworks not only to educate more people aboutthe disease, but does what he can to help oth-ers find a cure by donating all the money hemakes from his paintings to Parkinson’s re-search. The Hartman Corporation of the Yearhonoree was Joseph R. Ficalora, chairman,president and CEO of New York CommunityBancorp, Inc.
Father Tom established the Thomas Hart-man Foundation for Parkinson’s Research,Inc. in 2004, three years after he was diag-nosed with Parkinson’s disease. “It becameclear to me that God was inviting humanityto find the cure,” said Father Tom. “WithGod, prayer, good science and money, thecure can be found.”
The Foundation seeks to provide grants forthe newest and most innovative scientificprojects which offer the best hope for the ad-vancement and development of a cure. Scien-tists believe that with continued funding forresearch, a cure for Parkinson’s can be foundwithin 10 years. This is a time frame affirmedby top officials of the National Institutes ofHealth in testimony before Congress.

Glen Cove Hospital Raises Over $20,000On a summer evening, more than 300 people gathered at the Webb Institute in
Glen Cove overlooking the Long Island Sound to sample eclectic foods of 25 localeateries and wineries at Glen Cove Hospital’s restaurant and wine tasting event,sponsored by the hospital’s volunteer Auxiliary.
Thanks to the efforts of the Auxiliary and the generosity of local merchants andsupporters, the event raised over $20,000, which is earmarked for the hospital’sbreast care services and a contribution toward the purchase of a state-of-the-art digi-tal mammography machine. ■
