Louis DeCaro, an art teacher who suf-fers from Parkinson’s, received the FatherTom’s Spirit Award. The Spirit award is givento an individual with Parkinson’s who coura-geously continues to promote the fight to finda cure for this debilitating disease. DeCaroworks not only to educate more people aboutthe disease, but does what he can to help oth-ers find a cure by donating all the money hemakes from his paintings to Parkinson’s re-search. The Hartman Corporation of the Yearhonoree was Joseph R. Ficalora, chairman, president and CEO of New York CommunityBancorp, Inc.

Father Tom established the Thomas Hart-man Foundation for Parkinson’s Research,Inc. in 2004, three years after he was diag-nosed with Parkinson’s disease. “It becameclear to me that God was inviting humanityto find the cure,” said Father Tom. “WithGod, prayer, good science and money, thecure can be found.”

The Foundation seeks to provide grants forthe newest and most innovative scientificprojects which offer the best hope for the ad-vancement and development of a cure. Scien-tists believe that with continued funding forresearch, a cure for Parkinson’s can be foundwithin 10 years. This is a time frame affirmedby top officials of the National Institutes ofHealth in testimony before Congress.
