Through Auburn University’s on-campus Thesis Studio this exploration and resulting project attempts to approach the idea of architecture in a more holistic sense. Based in the desolate Capital city of Montgomery, the project attempts to address the disconnected pockets of Montgomery’s urban fabric through urban planning and architectural interventions. The goal of the Montgomery Market Center, which occupies an undeveloped island in the heart of downtown, is to create a purposeful public building that establishes continuity in the city’s urban composition.

In addition to traditional architectural illustrations and drawings, the conclusion of our thesis studio began with a week long rendering workshop led by Professor Kelly Wilson. The seminar focused on using artistic illustration, using Poppy Red Prismacolors, to embody the public nature of the project.

Sited in a medical complex, one of the main goals of this project was to fit into the urban context of Chicago’s Streeterville medical center while efficiently creating a building to address a very particular program of over 1 million square feet. This project primarily focused on the design of the ground entry and the patient lobbies and floors on the upper levels of the building. The use of efficient layouts on patient floors served as an aid to the staff, while also creating momentous spaces for patients and parents in every room and patient lobby. Looking over Seneca Park and onto Lake Michigan, The Chicago Avenue Children’s stands as a shelter, an escape, and most importantly as a Children’s Hospital.

In collaboration with the University of Florence School of Urban Planning, this single semester studio in Florence, Italy incorporated master planning & architectural design to redevelop the Piagge district of Florence. This is an area where the disconnect between the working, middle, and upper class is apparent and problematic .This project focused on redeveloping theurban space surrounding the Indiano Bridge with a mixed-use facility and a public park. The architectural design project consisted of two interlocking housing complexes providing both co-housing and apartment units with integrated commercial and service spaces.

Auburn University’s Rural Studio program offers students a unique opportunity to design and build their work. The typical semester at the Rural Studio for underclassmen includes the designing and construction of a house for an impoverished community member.

During my semester at the Rural Studio my colleagues and I were charged with designing a kitchen expansion for the Morrisette house at the Rural Studio main office. Additionally we formulated a master plan for future expansion of the Morrisette gardens.

The new vision of the Rural Studio to develop an ethic of thinking more holistically about how we live, what we eat, what we make, and the waste we produce can be showcased in the third-year kitchen project.

With the help of the Rural Studio staff, third party engineering support, and countless others, our team was able to design and begin construction of the Morrisette Kitchen Expansion. The work completed by this group was continued by the following semester’s team and the project is still continuing to expand.

RURAL STUDIO

Page 37: Thomas Kurian Fall 2012 Portfolio

During charettes we designed collectively through model building and sketching at the Red Barn. After several plausible iterations, a final model for a detached kitchen that would be a continuation of the current kitchen’s roof was collectively chosen.

This design would allow the vernacular of the Morrisette House to be uncompromised while allowing the kitchen to be easily heated and cooled.

FARM

Located outside of Monticello, Wisconsin, Little Sugar River Farm is an organic farm sponsored by Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms. Along with a classmate, I lived and worked on this organic for 3 weeks. During my time there I gained knowledge on the patterns and difficulties of organic farming.

In addition to farm work, we also completed small scale design-build projects. Not pictured work includes drainage design, soil grading, and the design and construction of garbage organizing/collector system consisting of four 4’x4’ bins with latched doors and lids. Our main task was to create an outdoor shower for the owner of the farm. Using only scrap wood and other leftover material, this shower was designed and built over the course of three days. The total construction cost was $5.

As a full-time summer intern, working within a three person team, produced architectural documentation of the NASA Saturn V Test Stand in Huntsville, Alabama to submit into the Library of Congress. Documentation tasks required proficiency in precise field surveying, interpreting construction drawings, and in utilizing 3D laser scanning technology. Digital documentation required proficiency in 3D modeling of PointCloud data using Autocad 2012 in order to create standardized architectural drawings for documentation and submission into the Library of Congress.

Position acquired through nationwide application invitation sponsored by the National Park Service for architect/preservation students, graduates, and recent graduates. Based on performance and availability, the offered summer internship was extended until October 2012 to allow for the completion of the project.

POINT CLOUD ANALYSIS AND CONVERSION

Point Cloud data points, which number in the hundreds of millions, are isolated and analyzed to create an accurate solid model reference using Autocad 2012 3D Modeling as illustrated above.

Over the course of the summer, Point Cloud data was transcribed into 3D solid information by our team to create precise line drawings. These line drawings were used to create the detailed architectural drawings necessary for submittal into the Library of Congress as well as the interpretive drawing as seen below.

As a full-time intern produced Schematic Designs, Design Development and Construction documents for a range of projects including apartment residences, hotels, and retail spaces. Involved in project management issues such as scheduling, site visits, and cost estimation with direct supervision. Independently coordinated revisions and development with clients, franchises, and consultants.

Project duties ranged between schematic sketching to construction detailing of finalized designs. Particular duties included: elevation coordination and design, floor plan coordination and design, construction detailing, building component scheduling and coordination, as well as LEED design submission and documentation. The work on these two pages are examples of details, sections, elevations, and layouts that I was responsible for producing.

THESIS RENDERINGSIn order to become better acquainted with the city of Montgomery, the 5th year thesis investigation began with a detailed prismacolor rendering of a downtown Montogomery facade. After spending time understanding and composing the intricacies of this existing facade, a second drawing illustrating the redesigned facade was composed.
