Current Program of Research
My program of research investigates schizotypy and schizophrenia from experimental and developmental psychopathology perspectives. My research focuses on developing and testing symptom, personality, neurocognitive, biobehavioral, and genetic associates of schizotypy. This program of research traces its roots back to Paul Meehl's landmark work on schizotypy and to the pioneering work on psychosis proneness by the Chapmans. It is guided by two primary questions: How can we identify individuals who are at risk for schizophrenia and related disorders, and how will identifying individuals at risk help us better understand the etiology, phenomenology, course, and treatment of these disorders? My research is based upon the theory that schizotypy arises from a process of “neuromaldevelopment” that results from the interaction or accumulation of multiple genetic, biological, and environmental risk factors. It is hypothesized that schizotypy is expressed across a dynamic continuum of adjustment. The majority of schizotypic individuals are not expected to decompensate, although they may demonstrate mild or transient forms of the experiences and symptoms reported in schizophrenic patients. The reliable identification of schizotypes should facilitate discovery and understanding of etiological factors, provide a unique window for examining risk and resilience factors related to the development of schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, and may ultimately hasten the development of prophylactic treatment interventions. Schizotypy, like schizophrenia, is a multidimensional construct and the dimensions have differential patterns of etiology, development, and expression. A secondary, but related, focus of my research laboratory examines bipolar spectrum psychopathology, and specifically clinical and subclinical manifestations of hyperthymic traits. My research in this area builds upon previous longitudinal findings that my colleagues and I published examining vulnerability for bipolar disorders in hyperthymic young adults.
My research into these topics is both theory driven and programmatic. It employs cross-sectional and prospective studies and actively involves student researchers. As detailed below, my program of research integrates theory and methods from multiple domains of inquiry and from multiple scientific disciplines (e.g., clinical, developmental, and cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience, psychiatry, and behavioral and molecular genetics). My laboratory is currently focusing on three

interrelated areas, including: 1) Expression of Clinical and Subclinical Psychopathology in Daily Life using Experience Sampling Methodology, 2) Identification and Assessment of the Multidimensional Structure of Schizotypy, and 3) Assessment of Risk for Bipolar Spectrum Psychopathology.
