Generation 4 4.Edward Riggs-4 (Edward Riggs-3, Edward Riggs-2, Thomas Riggs-1) [5]. He was born 1614 in ENGLAND [5]. He died 1668 in New Jersey. Notes for Edward Riggs: General Notes: From: Genealogy of the Riggs family By John Hankins Wallace Pages 5-6 "Edward Riggs,3 (son of Edward1 the immigrant) was born in England about 1614, and came to this country along with his father and family, landing in Boston, Mass., in the early summer of 1633. He assisted his father in preparing a new habitation and in taking care of the sick until April 5, 1635, when he married Elizabeth Roosa, quite a young girl, a daughter of a family of that name who had come over from England and settled in Boston. In August, of the same year, his mother died, and how long he remained in assisting his father is not known, but it is known that he soon set about establishing a home of his own. In 1637 he was a sergeant in the Pequot war, and he greatly distinguished himself by rescuing a body of his companions from an ambuscade into which they had been led by the Indians, and in which they all would have been cut off. By this notable act of bravery and skill the name of " Sergeant Riggs " became his well-known designation as long as he lived. Nothing is now known of his location between 1635 and 1640, but in the latter year he became a settler at Milford, Conn., and had land assigned him. In 1655, associated with Edward Wooster, Eichard Baldwin, John Browne, Robert Dennison, John Burnett and perhaps others, they bought from the Indians the district of country on the Naugatuck, then known as Paugusset, some ten or twelve miles above Milford, and established a plantation which was afterward called Derby. The location of Sergeant Riggs is still known as " Riggs1 Hill." On this hill, which is still in the possession of his descendants, he placed his habitation and built aPage 2 of 726

Thomas Riggs FamilyGeneration 4 (con't) which was afterward called Derby. The location of Sergeant Riggs is still known as " Riggs1 Hill." On this hill, which is still in the possession of his descendants, he placed his habitation and built a strong stockade as a protection against the Indians. The first house stood by the rock, a few rods from where the present residence stands, and in this house Sergeant Edward secreted and protected Whaley and Goff, two of the English Parliament that condemned and executed Charles I., while the emissaries of Charles II. were making most diligent search for them all along the Connecticut coast, in 1661. While Edward was not a member of the church and consequently not a voter, this brave act, in the face of the vengeance of the re-established English throne, establishes beyond question two points in his character, viz., that he was governed by his convictions in considering human rights, and that his sympathies were wholly with the Puritans in their struggle for liberty with the mother country. In such a character it is not difficult to understand that he should mentally rebel against laws which exeluded from the exercise of the rights of citizenship unless he was first a member of the church. Here we find a possible motive for his change of location in the advanced years of his life. The Province of New Jersey was named as a grant from the Crown, 1664, and it was believed to be a region specially attractive to settlers. In 1665 Edward, with some of his associates in the plantation of Derby, visited it, and were so well pleased with the prospects that they determined to found a new plantation on the Passaic that would be accessible to the outer world by the sailing craft of that day, and the site of Newark was then decided upon. The next year he spent most of the summer there preparing for the advent of the proposed colony, and his wife was with him, the first white .woman to spend a summer in Newark. The fundamental agreement was executed June 24, 1667. The colony was quite large, and in it were a number of his old associates in the plantation at Derby. His two sons, Edward and Joseph, were designated as " Planters," that is, original proprietors. The former did not arrive till later in the year, and the latter had no home lot assigned him, because he was still a bachelor. The other son, Samuel, was provided for at Derby and remained there. In 1668, the next year after the colony was fully organized, Edward died. His widow, Elizabeth, still a healthy and well-preserved woman, sometime previous to 1671 married Caleb Carwithie. Previous to her marriage she conveyed to her son Joseph one-half of her home lot."

Generation 7 11.Miles Riggs-7 (Joseph Riggs-6, Edward Riggs-5, Edward Riggs-4, Edward Riggs-3, Edward Riggs-2, Thomas Riggs-1) [32, 33]. He was born 1705 in Newark or Orange Co., New Jersey [34]. He died on 24 Dec 1753 in New York, New York [32]. Notes for Miles Riggs: General Notes: From: Genealogy of the Riggs family By John Hankins Wallace Page 13 "Miles Riggs3 (son of Joseph,4 Edward,3 Edward,3 Edward1) was born at Newark or Orange, N. J., about 1705. Nothing is known of his early life, except that he was a sailor. On June 26, 1735, he married Elizabeth Whitney at Nor- walk, Conn. From this union there were eight children, as given below, and from these a tribe has descended. From several causes the descendants of Miles seem to have believed he was the progenitor of all bearing the Riggs name in this country, and the wild and improbable stories told of his origin and early history have had an astonishingly wide circulation in all the different branches of the Riggs family. The story that I met with most frequently when I commenced this compilation, and often from very intelligent people, was to the effect that Miles was not only the progenitor of all the tribe, but that Riggs was not his name. That he was picked up in some foreign port and taken as a cabin boy on a ship, and he was so fond and successful in playing tricks and " running rigs " on everybody about the ship, that the sailors named him "Rigs," and hence the supposed patronymic of the whole tribe. Now the truth is that Miles was born in Newark, and his paternal ancestors had lived there through three generations before he was born. He was a sailor, but it is not known that he ever was in a foreign port. By the merest accident I discovered in the New York Historical Society the date and circumstances' of his death. He lived in Newark with his wife and a houseful of children, and he owned and ran a sloop for the purpose of carrying freight between New York and Elizabeth, and Newark. He was in New York on the night of December 24, 1753, and a heavy gale springing up, he left his lodging about midnight and went to look after the safety of his vessel in Peck1s slip, where she was lying. By some misstep he fell overboard and was drowned. He died intestate, and his brother Joseph administered on the estate. The names of other brothers and sisters, as well as that of his wife Elizabeth, appear in the settlement of his affairs. His sloop was his chief possession in the line of personal property. His widow returned to Connecticut with her family, and in 1759 married David Rockwell."

Elizabeth Whitney is the daughter of Joseph Whitney and Hannah Hoyt [34, 46]. She was born 1717 in Norwalk, Ct. [47]. She died Aug 1815 in Norwalk, Fairfield, Connecticut [35].Page 6 of 726 Saturday, March 27, 2010 11:25:16 PM

About her husband Miles Riggs. His grandson, Miles Riggs, had an old manuscript book, in which was recorded the fact that "he was of Irish extraction, born in the Isle of Wight, 7 June 1687; followed the sea till late in life; then settled at Norwalk, Conn., where his son Miles was born 20 May 1748." Unfortunately, this book fell into the hands of a woman who had no love for "old things," and she burned it, within a few years past. Another tradition says that he was from Newark, N.J., and this seems to be supported by Mr. Samuel H. Congar's "Genealogical Notices of the First Settlers of Newark", in Collections of the New Jersey Historical Society, Vol. 6, Supplement, p. 131, which makes him traditionally the son of that Joseph Riggs, who died 11 Sept. 1744, aged 69, and was buried at Orange, N.J. His grandparents were, possibly, Edward and Mary Riggs, of Newark; and his great-grandparents may have been Edward and Elizabeth Riggs, of Milford and Derby, Conn. No record of his death has been found, but a deed in the Norwalk land records, Vol. XI, p. 185, shows that "Elizabeth Wriggs, widow, or Norwalk," joined her brothers and sisters, 5 Aug. 1754, in conveying land at the upper end of Clapboard Hills, to Ebenezer Benedict. One tradition affirms that he lived in Newark, N.J.; another says that he was a mariner, master of a vessel, and that, at the time of his death, he dwelt in New Jersey, near New York City; and that he was "supposed to have died in New York Harbor, and to have found a watery grave, about 1754." She married (2d) Ensign David Rockwell, whose first wife, Elizabeth (Hyatt) Rockwell, died in Ridgefield, Conn., 13 Feb. 1758. He was born in Norwalk, 8 Oct. 1708, son of Jonathan and Abigail (Canfield) Rockwell, of Norwalk and Ridgefield, g. son of John Rockewll, Jr., of Stamford, Conn., and g. g. son of John Rockwell, Sen., one of the early settlers of Stamford in Dec. 1641. They settled at Ridgebury, in Ridgefield, where he died, 30 May 1788, in his 80th year, and was buried in Ridgebury Cemetery. She married (3d), about 1791, being then 74 years old, Agur Fairchild, who was her senior by six years. He died in 1797, after which she lived with her daughter, Mrs. Esther (Riggs) Rockwell, in Ridgebury, till she was 94 years old, then went to live with her son, Miles Riggs, at Norfolk, Litchfield Co., Conn., where she died in Aug. 1815, aged 98 years

Notes for Timothy Riggs: General Notes: From: Genealogy of the Riggs Family By John Hankins Wallace Page 17-21 Timothy Riggs,5 of North Carolina, (reputed son of Samuel,4 Edward,3 Edward,3 Edward1) was born at or near Newark, N. J., and grew up and was married in Morris County, N. J. He was born about 1723, and a Timothy Riggs united with the church at Morristown, September 4, 1757, and two or three years afterward the officers of the church had lost all knowledge and trace of him. In 1775 a Timothy Riggs secured a grant of land from the colonial authorities of North Carolina, situated in what is now Lincoln County. Whether this was the Timothy who joined the Morristown church may be reasonably inferred, but that he was born in New Jersey there is not a shadow of doubt. This was not only his own statement handed down through his posterity, but it is confirmed by several correspondents in that State who did not belong to his family. He afterward obtained other grants of land, and his sons also secured grants that were chiefly in Surrey County, which seems to have been the general headquarters of the family. One of his sons, Zadok, was sheriff of that county about 1788. According to recollections of his grandchildren, he had ten sons and two daughters, and most of them seem to have been remarkably prolific. Timothy and his wife were buried in North Carolina, but about the close of that century the sons commenced to migrate. One of them settled and remained in middle Tennessee; others pushed on to the region of Warren County, Ky., where they seem to have remained about twenty years. The next move was for the territory of Illinois, where two or three families remained and have attained eminent positions, but the majority of them pushed on to Missouri. About 1850 a great number of the Missouri familes migrated to the Pacific States, and notwithstanding these migratory movements every generation seems to have appreciated the advantages of education, and many of them have held positions of honor and profit in many States. In their religiotis belief and observances they seem to be largely Baptists, but in the second quarter of this century a great many of them followed the teachings of Alexander Campbell into his new organization, known as the " Disciples of Christ." Unfortunately we are not able to give the order and dates of birth of his twelve children, and we will not attempt it except in a single instance. .

He was born 1780 in Virginia [194]. He died 1836 in Lincoln Co., Tennessee [195]. Notes for John Neese: General Notes: Date sent: Mon, 01 Sep 1997 14:40:29 -0500 From: Monte Neece After researching my NEECE line for almost 20 years, I went to Lincoln County and made contact with some Neece's there. We talked on the phone and I determined that all were descended from the same family. They didn't know they had roots to Lincoln County dating to 1811, and one group of Neece's didn't know they were related to another group in town with the same name. My brother, Dan, and I flew to Atlanta, he from Dallas, me from Orlando, rented a car and drove to Fayetteville where we set up a meeting with all these Lincoln County Neece's. Another distant cousin, Wayne Neece, from Joplin, Missouri, also came into Fayetteville. Early the following morning we all met for breakfast at Shoneys in Fayetteville, an impromptu reunion. It was very exciting! I have written about eighty pages of a narrative on our family history. Following is an edited excerpt about the Lincoln County connection. The Neece Family of Tennessee John N. Neece, was born around 1783, possibly in Pennsylvania, North Carolina or Virginia. He lived all of his adult life in Tennessee, and died around 1836 near Fayetteville, Tennessee. Like just about everyone of that period, John was a farmer. He always owned land, even from the first years of his marriage. Although never wealthy, he was never really poor, either. At the time of his death, he owned more than 500 acres of farm land in the rolling hills of Lincoln County, Tennessee. Also like most people of that period he couldn't read or write, but he was a true American pioneer. John was among the first white settlers to arrive in the southern part Middle Tennessee when he gathered his family and joined a group of settlers that moved there in 1811. John's wife, Mahulda Ellis, came from a pioneering family. The Ellis' had been in America since at least the early 1700's. Mahulda's mother's family, the Riggs, had arrived in Boston in 1630 with the firstPage 30 of 726 Saturday, March 27, 2010 11:25:19 PM

Thomas Riggs FamilyGeneration 9 (con't) at least the early 1700's. Mahulda's mother's family, the Riggs, had arrived in Boston in 1630 with the first 1000 settlers of John Winthrop's Massachusetts Bay Colony. Her father, James Ellis, was well-educated and a respected southern planter, and was probably the one who led the settlers to middle Tennessee. Mahulda was of typically strong pioneer stock: married very young, bore and cared for a large number of children, managed a large farm household, and lived long. John Neece and Hulda Ellis were the all-American roots that grew an all-American family.John and Hulda in Jefferson County, Tennessee The first record we find of our John Neece is from the book of Jefferson County, Tennessee Marriage Bonds which show the "John Ness" and "Huldy Ellis" marriage on May 31, 1800. We know from later census records that John was about 17 years old and Hulda was about 14 years old at the time of their marriage. As a point of historical reference it might be interesting to note some of the events that were contemporary to this time. Tennessee had become the 15th state in 1796. George Washington died on December 14, 1799, about 6 months before the marriage of John Neece and Hulda Ellis. In the fall of 1800 Thomas Jefferson, ran against Aaron Burr for the Presidency. It was in these times that the story of John and Hulda began. On March 25, 1801 Robert N. Neece was the first child born to the young couple. Robert would be the first of 14 children. Remarkably, all 14 children survived to adulthood, and 12 of the 14 produced offspring, a great rarity in those days. John and Hulda gave t
