DESCRIPTION THOMAS SILVA ARCHITECTS, INC is a California based, full service architecture fi rm located in San Francisco, and is currently associate architect for two Herzog & deMeuron projects.

Prior to founding TSA in 2007, Thomas Silva, AIA has gained over thirty years experience collaborating as a lead designer, senior project architect, and project manager for many renowned architectural fi rms. Mr. Silva has participated on projects with several Pritzker Prize laureates, including Richard Meier, Sir Norman Foster, Herzog & de Meuron and Sir James Stirling. Mr. Silva is licensed in California and New York, NCARB certifi ed and is a LEED accredited professional.

RECOGNITION FOR DESIGN EXCELLENCEProjects in which Thomas Silva, AIA has played a key role have received consistent design recognition over the years, including several AIA regional and national awards. Mr. SIlva is also the recipient of the Rome Prize in 1988 for his critically acclaimed theoretical projects. Mr. Silva’s architectural drawings have been published and exhibited internationally, and have been included in the permanent archives of various museums.

Founder and Principal of Thomas Silva Architects, Inc., Thomas Silva is a registered archi-tect with over three decades of professional experience, including the collaboration with four Pritzker Prize laureates. This site for an international border crossing lies at the juncture of the International Date Line and the US/Russia border between the Diomede Islands in Alaska.

At the convergence of two nations, two hemispheres, and two days is a wind drivenfulcrum composed of a mirror refl ecting the conditions of both directions.

HARLEM HOUSING NEW YORK, NEW YORK1987

Thesis Project: Six city blocks in East Harlem, New York were the subject of a renovation project that included low income housing and retail. The grouping of the buildings were modeled on a reconciliation of the historic mappings of the neighborhood, from its idyllic origins as a 17th century Dutch farm community to the urban blight and decay of the 20th century. The maps were viewed as playing cards and were shuffl ed to arrange a new urban morphology.

Received 1987 Matthew Del Gaudio Award for Excellence in Total Design, New York Society of Architects/New York Chapter AIA.

HOMELESS SHELTERNEW YORK, NEW YORK1984

Located in the Bowery, this shelter for the homeless contains private enclaves for 60 oc-cupants. The massing creates a street within a street, with social services located below grade.

Individual cubicles are situated between the shelter’s facade and the fabric of neighboring buildings. Mundane, yet iconic images of New York, such as cast iron fi re escapes, fenes-trated brick walls, and steel chimneys punctuate the new urban landscape.

SOLAR OFFICE BUILDINGRIYADH, THE KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA1995

Inspired by the shape of oil drums, and located on the equator, this 9-story offi ce building for a major oil producer in Saudi Arabia incorporates a full height solar shading device rotat-ing around the facade throughout the day.

A bank of photovoltaic collectors provides 50% of the electricity of the building. Additional elements includes a retail bank at the ground fl oor, an exoskeleton structure, and a tensile cable roof structure penthouse.

Water is collected and contained in a rooftop sphere above a mechanical service spine.

International competition, 2nd Place.

GINGERLAND RESIDENCENEVIS, WEST INDIES1988

This site for an international border crosing lies at the juncture of the International Date Line and the US/Russia border between the Diomede Islands in Alaska.

At the convergence of two nations, two hemispheres, and two days is a fulcrum, conecting one side at one time.

Exhibited in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, 1990.

A self-sustained, hurricane resistant residence perched on a volcano in the Lesser Antilles archipelago.

The house’s walls are fabricated with two layers of concrete block enabling passive, con-vective cooling. Solar cells provides 100% of the electricity and water collection is stored in a cistern. Vibrant tropical colors echo the wild fl ora and fauna native to the island.

BATESON STATE OFFICE BUILDINGSACRAMENTO, CA1977

Iconic and innovative State 250,000 square foot offi ce building incorporating passive and active solar heating, ventilation tube cooling, mass storage and night fl ushing. Its famous annotated building section is published widely in most standard mechanical engineering textbooks, and still used as a teaching tool. Built for the State of California during the gov-ernorship of Jerry Brown and designed by State Architect, Sim van der Ryn.

WEXNER CENTER FOR THE VISUAL ARTSCOLUMBUS , OH1985

A 140,000 gross-square-foot technologically advanced, architecturally renowned project serving the experimental arts. Building is widely considered one of the canonical projects of the “deconstructive” architecture movement of the late 20th century.

Received 1993 AIA National Honor Award.

ULM EXHIBITION AND ASSEMBLY BUILDINGULM, GERMANY1988

An 85,000 gross-square-foot exhibition/assembly building which faces the tallest Gothic cathedral in Europe. It houses temporary exhibitions and other cultural amenities. The roof forms echo the adjacent historic fabric of the city while the building form is juxtaposed in a formal modernist vocabulary.

BRIDGEPORT CENTERBRIDGEPORT, CN1988

Conceived as a “city in miniature”, this 16 story, $20 million offi ce building facing Interstate 95 is located in a redevelopment district in a deteriorated area. The facade is concave, act-ing as a focus for pedestrians into its radiant interior and fi ve story sky lit atrium. The build-ing poses various faces to the city and off ers varying scales instead of a traditional single mass structure. The adjacent Barnum Museum has been restored as a local landmark.

SCHWARTZ CENTER FOR PERFORMING ARTSCORNELL UNIVERSITY, ITHACA, NY1985

This center is a $21 million teaching facility for the University’s theater and performing arts departments housing a 450-seat proscenium theater, dance studios, a formal lobby, class-rooms and support spaces. It is designed as a cluster of familiar building masses, including an outdoor loggia overlooking Cascadilla Gorge, and a campanile visible from downtown.

STANFORD UNIVERSITY CANTOR ARTS CENTERPALO ALTO, CA1995

This project is a $22 million historic renovation of a 70,000 gross-square-foot historic mu-seum and a new 40,000 sq. ft. addition including a contemporary gallery wing, a conser-vation studio, new sculpture gardens, a café, an auditorium and a bookshop. The original museum was the fi rst concrete building constructed west of the Mississippi, and the new addition pays homage to this with building masses echoing simple planar concrete forms.

The museum contains the largest collection of Rodin sculptures in the world.

This $ 7.5 million athletics department at UCLA consists of a Hall of Fame and adminis-tration building consisting of 64,000 gross-square-feet of new construction and interior improvements of the existing facility. The building responds to the urban campus setting with traditional materials and crisp linear forms.

STANFORD UNIVERSITY CANCER CENTERPALO ALTO, CA1996

Competition entry for a 200,000 gross-square-foot $40 million 4 story cancer treatment and outpatient ambulatory care center containing 6 linear accelerators, 16 operating rooms, pre-op, post op, and pediatric wards. The design was conceived as a hotel for healing and maximizes natural light.

Thomas Silva AIA served as Sr. Project Architect/Project Manager with Polshek Partnership Architects LLP, 1996 and was responsible for pre-design, programming, planning, sche-matic design, project administration and fi nal presentation.


NATIONAL HISTORIC ARCHIVE INSTITUTETAINAN CITY, TAIWAN 1996

This is a proposal for a $45 million, 250,000 gross-square-foot mixed-use facility consisting of a fi ve story school, an archival/preservation laboratory, a library, museum, amphitheater, underground parking, and administration facilities overlooking an ancient Confucian temple.

Received 2nd Place in an International Competition.

Thomas Silva AIA served as Sr. Project Architect/Project Designer with Polshek Partnership Architects LLP in 1996 and was responsible for programming, planning, overall building and urban design resolution, coordinating a 12 person team in Taipei, and fi nal presentation.


STINSON BEACH HOUSESTINSON BEACH, CA1995

A 6,500 gross-square-foot residence remodel in Stinson Beach, CA with a new skylight feature over the living and dining areas.

Warm natural stained wood fi nishes predominates the interior fi nishes. Clean lines and details harmonize with the existing fabric.

A 260,000 gross-square-foot, $30 million, 11 story high-rise renovation of an existing department store, now headquarters to Samsung electronics. The use of natural light and transparency dominates the architectural expression.

URBAN OUTFITTERSSAN FRANCISCO, CA 1993

A major retail store interior with a design intended to establish its branding concept utilizing eroded surfaces and exposed raw materials. Three fl oors open to one another and express an emotionally charged environment.

This residence for an art collector was inspired by the calligraphic italic font. The program includes a linear lap pool, dramatically extending from the living space. Natural light and solid masses play against each other, providing spaces that open onto the exterior while protecting its inhabitants from it.

COPIANAPA, CA1996

A major non-profi t tourist destination center focused around Northern California’s unique wine region. The facility houses art exhibition spaces, food tasting programs and edible gardens. Dramatically perched above the Napa River, the center’s undulating roof recall the region’s benign climate and natural landscape.

BAY AREA DISCOVERY MUSEUMSAUSALITO, CA 2001

A hands-on exploratory center for toddlers including outdoor learning gardens and a series of interactive education exhibits housed in former Army barracks overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge.

PRESIDIO MAIN POST BUILDING RENOVATIONPRESIDIO, SAN FRANCISCO, CA2000

A 65,000 gross-square-foot $7.5 million conversion of the 6th US Army’s Headquarters in San Francisco’s historic Presidio into a sustainably designed tenant improvement shell for non-profi t institutions.

Thomas Silva AIA served as Sr. Project Architect/Project Manager with Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects, in 2000 and was responsible for managing project from schematics, design development, construction documents, and permits. Mr. Silva also served as team leader, technical design director and supervised construction administration and historic status entitlements.


STANFORD UNIVERSITY RICHARD M. LUCAS CENTERPALO ALTO, CA 2003

A 16,000 gross square foot, $16 million cutting edge research center that houses some of the most advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging equipment in existence within an underground complex program featuring a high-powered MRI and cyclotron, a landscaped courtyard, offi ces and research laboratories for cancerous cell research and molecular and gene imaging expressions. Conceived as a “slice of the sky”.

Received 2007 Excellence in Architecture Design Award, San Francisco Chapter AIA.

UCSF MISSION BAY COMMUNITY CENTERSAN FRANCISCO, CA2005

A158,000 gross-square-foot, $85 million building featuring three fl oors of fi tness health and recreation facilities surrounding a light-fi lled atrium and tower. Indoor teaching and outdoor lap pools as well as various cardiovascular exercise facilities. Drop-in child care facilities, retail outlets and restaurants included, and a fully equiped conference center.

Thomas Silva AIA seved as Sr. Project Manager with Perkins + Will (formally MBT Architec-ture) in collaboration with Legorreta + Legorreta Architects in 2005.





A $30 million, 19-story, 192-room solar powered hotel in downtown San Diego.

Received 2002 AIA San Diego Chapter Design Award.

Thomas Silva AIA served as Lead Designer/Sr. Project Architect/Project Manager with Tannerhecht Architecture in 2001. Responsibilities included client and agency presentations and approvals, programming, overall concept and schematic design, code/ADA analysis, coordinating prime consultants and custom interior design, managing design develop-ment and construction documents phases, spec writing of Divisions 0-14, senior technical detailer, project scheduling, drafted and administrated contracts, team leader of eight, and interior design coordination with Rockwell Group in NYC.

TSA is currently serving as Associate Architect in collaboration with Herzog and de Meuron.Services include design development resolution, construction document, bidding and con-struction administration.


A 130,000 gross square foot, $31 million renovation and fi ve story addition containing state-of-the art physics labs and classrooms, highly sensitive optics instruments for con-ducting experiments into electromagnetism, plasma physics, DNA splitting and subatomic mater.
