Following the Leader

Mark 8:34-35 34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.

Did you ever play follow the leader when you were a kid? We probably all did. It was a simple game. One kid would be the leader. If he hopped on one foot, everyone else had to. Whatever he did, you did.

That’s not a bad illustration for what Christianity is all about. Very simply, Jesus is our leader and we follow him wherever he leads. That is easy to talk about and sing about, but it is not easy to practice.

Last week we studied how Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered with the correct answer, “the Christ”, but he had the wrong definition. He thought Jesus would be a political leader who would liberate the Jews. Jesus had to instruct them that he was not that kind of Messiah. He would be a suffering Messiah. He was going to die on a cross. That’s why he had come.

The question I want to ask today is “what does that mean for us?” If we are to follow him and he is going to a cross then what does that mean for us? Today, we are going to look at three questions as we talk about what it means to follow a man who went to a cross:

1. Do I have to follow the leader?

2. What does it mean to follow the leader?

3. Why would anyone choose to follow the leader?
