Organize the Pooja Samagri in different trays as given in the Samagri List 2) Decoration [ ]: Tie the door hanging (Toran) to the main door. Decorate your main entrance with colorful Rangoli. If you are organizing Thread Ceremony at venue like Hotel Banquet Hall, Temple Hall, City Hall or any other such private/city event facility, you may like to engage professional decorators to decorate the Hall and the Pooja Stage. 3) Music [ ]: Play some divine instrumental music like Sitar, Shehnai, Santoor, Flute etc… to create a holy atmosphere. 4) Photos & Videos [ ]: Check if your camera and camcorder are in working conditions; batteries charged & there is enough memory on the card. 5) Havan [ ]: Havan is preferred & recommended in the garage. If you take full responsibility & if proper care is taken to avoid the fire hazard, Havan may be performed inside the house if it is safe. In case the Havan is to be performed outside in open space back yard/patio/front yard, proper care needs to be taken for protection from hot, cold or windy weather. Important: If the Thread Ceremony is organized in a venue like Hotel Banquet Hall, Temple Hall, City Hall or any other such private/city event facility, please ensure that you have taken permission in advance to perform Havan. 6) Dress Code [ ]: Traditional Indian Dress. 7) Managing Kids [ ]: If there are other kids at home call their friends as much in advance as possible so that they will not get bored and trouble during the Pooja. Ask the kids to participate in the Pooja as they like, do not force them. Engage them in their favorite activities like comic books, story books, favorite TV Programs, Cartoon/Comedy TV Programs or DVDs etc… However, ensure that kids do not make any noise and disturb the Pooja. 8) Matru-Bhojan [ ]: In typical US environment, Matrubhojan should be limited to 2-3 sweets & 1-2 other items that the boy likes. This will help to make the Matrubhojan manageable. About 5-10 (more the better) Friends of the Boy should participate in the Matrubhojan. Decorate the tables/seating arrangement. If possible use Silverware for the Boy. Mother and the women attending the Thread Ceremony should feed the boy. Keep the Matrubhojan Area away from the Pooja Vidhi so that the Pooja can continue even if other kids have not finished the Matrubhojan. 9) Prasad/Bhog [ ]: Prepare the Prasad/Bhog (offerings to the God like regular lunch food, sweets etc…) well in time. If possible call 2-3 families of friends/relatives for help from beginning. 10) Bhikshaval/Matru Bhiksha [ ]: This is an interesting step of the Thread Ceremony wherein, the Batu asks the ladies attending the function to give Bhiksha and the ladies give the Bhiksha & blessings to Batu. Prepare a separate Photo booth type proper area with a nice backdrop at the Thread Ceremony Venue, where you can keep a small table/stool to keep the Bhiksha Items in a decorated bowl to be given to the Batu (Boy). Prepare a decorative bowl for Batu to accept the Bhiksha. Mother will first offer Bhiksha followed by all other women & attendees. If time permits, you can use this time for taking photos of guests with the Batu. Do a good decoration so that all your photos will come properly and make a memorable album. Attendees can also give gift to the Batu along with blessings at this time. 11) Kashi Yatra [ ]: This is an interesting part of thread ceremony. The Batu pretends to go to Kashi for education. A Mama (maternal uncle) goes after the Batu and stops him and tells him, oh, my dear nephew pl. do not go I shall give my daughter/find a suitable bride for you after your studies. If the location has enough space, Batu can really run & maternal uncle has to run after him and catch him and bring back. Depending on time available keep about 10-15 minutes for this fun filled step. 12) Bhojan (Lunch): You can arrange catered food for this event which may have onion & garlic. 13) Follow the steps & diagrams below for preparing the Pooja Stage.

Preparation Guidelines for Thread Ceremony Page 2 of 5

|| Pooja Stage Arrangement || As far as possible do not set up Pooja near kitchen so that strong smell of spices will not cause problem

during the Pooja and also chatting in the kitchen will not create distraction during Pooja . Place the Chaurang (Chowki) against a wall in such way that the deities on the Chaurang are facing East (If

not possible West is also OK). Place a nice decorative cloth on it. If the Thread ceremony is organized in an Event Hall, set up the Chaurang on the stage at the center and arrange the seats behind the chaurang facing the attendees.

Keep all the Pooja Samagri in different plates on the right side of the Chaurang. Prepare a bowl full of Panchamrut by adding 2-3 tea spoon curd, 1 spoon honey, 1-2 spoons pure ghee & 1 spoon sugar to about 1 cup milk. If required prepare more pamchamrut enough for all the guests invited for the Pooja.

Place 2 flowerpots with assorted flowers at the 2 backside corners of the Chaurang. In the center of the Chaurang kep handful of rice grains and place a silver or copper Kalash. Fill the Kalash with water, just a little over half. Put 1 Beatle nut, 1 Quarter coin, 1 flower & a little

akshata in both the Kalash. If available put some Ganga Jal (Holy water of Ganges) in the Kalash. Place new cloth e.g. Blouse Piece or Handkerchief etc… around the kalash.

Place 5 Beatle nut leaves on the edge of the Kalash with the stems inside the kalash & the ends outside the kalash. Place plate or Tamhan (copper or silver) on the Kalash. Put rice grains in the pate till inside rim and make it flat. Draw a “Swastik” symbol with kumkum in the middle of the rice grains.

Place the Bell (Ghanta) at the front left corner of the Chaurang and place the Conch (Shankha) on the front right corner of the Chaurang. Keep some rice grains below the conch to make a proper base for it.

Keep the Lord Ganesh Murti in front of both the Kalash at the center and keep murti or coin or photo of Lakshmi to the right side of Lord ganesh.

Keep all other deities as per your family tradition e.g. Kuladevata on the Chaurang at a suitable place. Photos can be also placed on the wall if needed.

Arrangement around the Chaurang (Chowki):

Place sufficient aluminum foil (about 2 feet wide strip) on the floor on all the 3 sides of Chaurang (front, left & right side) so that the floor will not get spoiled due to Pooja material.

Keep one oil lamp (Samai) and one Ghee Lamp (Niranjan) on the right hand side of the Chaurang on the foil. Use a small plate below Samai or niranjan so that the oil or ghee will not spill outside.

Keep the incense stick (Agarbatti) in a proper holder next to the ghee lamp on the right side of Chaurang. Keep 5 coconuts with water in front of the Chaurang on the aluminum foil. Keep one Beatle Leaf in front

of each coconut. Keep one dollar note folded on each leaf, keep one quarter coin on each dollar note, keep one Beatle Nut on each coin. Keep one piece of dry coconut on each Beatle Leaf and keep a small piece of “Deshi Gud” i.e. Jaggery on each piece of dry coconut. Keep small quantity of 5 types of dry fruits like cashes nuts, almonds, resins, pistachio, dry dates etc…

Keep one Jug full of water near the Chaurang. Keep a big utensil or big bowl to keep the used water. Keep two mattresses one each for the husband and wife performing Pooja in front of the Chaurang about

2 feet away from the Chaurang. Husband will seat facing the Chaurang and the wife will seat on the right side of the husband. The Chaurang should be in the center for both to perform Pooja comfortably.

Keep one mattress on the left side of the Chaurang for Panditji who will be facing the couple performing the Pooja. If the host is facing East Panditji should be facing West and if host is facing West Panditji should be facing East.

Keep all other Pooja material on the right side of the Chaurang duly arranged in different plates as per the samagri list without fail (Please do not keep the Pooja samagri in the plastic carry bags). Double check all the material as per the list is available. (Do not misplace Pooja Samagri and very important; do not fight with each other over Samagri ).

Preparation for Havan If the outside weather is favorable, it is advisable to perform Havan in the Back Yard/Patio. Havan in

Garage is the best option. Please ensure that the fire alarms & smoke detectors don’t go off during Pooja due to Agarabatti & Havan Smoke.

Keep all the Havan material as per the list in the garage or back yard or patio where the Havan is to be performed.

All the above preparation should be done before arrival of Panditji so that Pooja can be finished in time and all the Guests, the hosts and Panditji can have Prasad Bhojan (Lunch) in time.

Lunch Plate Decoration: For the Matrubhojan function you can use silverware for Batu and also have some decoration around his plate with the help of flowers or rangoli. Floral or beaded door hanging can kept around the lunch plate.

Bhikshaval/Bhiksha Grahan/Matru Bhiksha Set up Cum Photo Booth You should plan taking photos of attendees while they give Bhiksha to Batu. To create a memorable album you should create a decorated booth for Bhikshaval. Simple Decoration Ideas for the Bhikshaval (Matru Bhiksha/Bhiksha Grahan) Background
