CONGRATULATIONS from Fasig-Tipton’s ownGraded Stakes Winning Star of the Week:

2YO Midlantic Grad:

i Wild Promises i winner of the GIII My Charmer Handicap

Congratulations to her connections!

Madeline PickensAccomplishment: Pickens, aThoroughbred owner/breeder, hasannounced a plan to create a refuge forferal horses and burros. More than 30,000mustangs have been rounded up by theBureau of Land Management and arebeing kept in holding facilities, which sheplans to change.Birthdate: March 5, 1957.Birthplace: Kirkuk, Iraq.Family: Husband Boone, daughter

Dominique.Current residence: Dallas, TX.Describe your own Pickens Plan for us: The idea is that we'll bring wild horses from the holding facilities there. Families can visit and students and tourists can come. It definitely would be a non-profit foundation. People can come see what the American heritage is like in person. What inspired you to do this? The wild mustang has always been part of our history. Because I immigrated to America, your heritage means more to me than perhaps it does to some of the people here who have forgotten it.If you could change one thing about our sport, what would it be? When I found out [horses were going to slaughter], I became obsessed with trying to correct a wrong and stop the slaughter of horses. We herald the winners and sell them for millions of dollars, but very little of that money goes back into taking care of the rest of them. Favorite vacation spot? America. I live in Texas and have a home in California, so I guess they rate pretty highly. America has so much to offer. We have a beautiful country.Childhood ambition? I always knew I'd be successful. I never doubted it for a moment. I came here to America with nothing and I knew I'd make it because I loved it here. I think that's the American Dream: that anybody can come here and find success. But when you have success, you need to put back, too.Proudest moment? Watching my daughter Dominique grow. She just had a baby Tuesday and I became a grandmother. When I married Allen [Paulson]. And when I married Boone. And watching the animals I rescued from Katrina. I took 800 cats and dogs out of Louisiana. There were several aircraft I chartered, and every time one would take off, I felt like it was Noah's Ark.Favorite food? Chocolate. If you could have any job in the world, what would you choose? I have the best job in the world right now! I'm free to be who I am and I'm free to help any cause I want. I don't think there's any better job than that.

AHe kind of had a troubledtrip at the Breeders= Cup,@ O=Neill said. AIt was a largefield and a lot of them were being sent hard early. Weput a line through that race, but at the same timeyou=re always worried what a race like that does totheir confidence. It obviously didn=t affect him in anegative way. Today=s race came up in a perfect spotand there=s not a ton of options really. We definitelydidn=t think the mile and one eighth would be a prob-lem. The dream goal is the [GI] Santa Anita H. ALIX ROAD TOPS DAY ONE AT DEAUVILLEContinuing the global trend, returns were down as thefirst session closed at Arqana=s December Sale inDeauville yesterday, but there were several lots to lightup the board as business steadied on the Normandycoast. Topping the sheets was the Haras desCapucines-consigned Hip 8, Alix Road (Fr) (Linamix{Fr}), who was knocked down to Xavier Bozo=s Inter-continental Bloodstock for i310,000. The five-year-oldregistered a personal best when third in the 2006 G1Prix Saint-Alary, but has failed to get her head in frontin black-type company. She will remain in training in theshort term in a bid to rectify that statistic. AAlix Road isa lovely looking mare with a very good race record, andI bought her as a broodmare prospect for leading trot-ters trainer Jean-Etienne Dubois,@ revealed Bozo. AShe isstakes and group placed on many occasions, but shehasn=t won a stakes race yet, so we might keep her intraining to try and win a listed race. She is a possiblefor the Listed Prix Miss Satamixa on the all-weather atDeauville in early January, a race which is restricted tofillies and mares. Then we will retire her and breed herto a top stallion abroad, but it has not yet been decidedwhich one. We got her for what we valued her, and weare very happy.@

Galileo Foal & Dubai Destination Mare Well-Received... The joint-second highest price of the day was alsothe highest paid for a foal when Hip 138 went the wayof Horse France for i300,000. The May-foaled son ofGalileo (Ire) is a half-brother to the stakes placed City ofTroy (GB) (Grand Lodge), and was consigned by fledg-ling operation Haras de Saint Isidro. AThis was a lovelyfoal, the best in the sale, very correct and by a world-class sire,@ commented Robert Nataf of Horse France. AIbought him for Irish interests.@ Trainer Carlos Laffon-Parias added, AI bred this colt in partnership with theSpanish company Darpat SARL. We were not preparedto let him go for a cheap price, and we were the under-bidders on him. At this price, it is certainly a satisfac-tory sale.@ That result was matched when Darley=s Hip182, the unraced three-year-old Gulf Breeze (GB) (DubaiDestination), was purchased by Jean-Louis Branere=sFrance Pur Sang on behalf of the Astronomer RoyalSyndicate. Branere elaborated on plans for thegrandaughter of Fall Aspen. AAstronomer Royal Syndi-cate is composed of American and Australian investorswho have invested in racehorses in the United Statesand France and they also believe that the French stal-lion market can be hugely developed,@ he said. AThis iswhy they bought Astronomer Royal, who will stand atHaras de La Reboursiere et Montaigu and shuttle toAustralia during the Southern Hemisphere breedingseason. They intend to support the horse in France with20 mares. This mare is one of them, alongside 16 oth-ers that have already been bought in the United States, and a few more that we intend to buy in a near future, probably privately. The syndicate believes AstronomerRoyal can be a successful stallion, and any breeder thatwill send a mare the first season and another one in thesecond season will be eligible to pay only half price onthe third and fourth season.@

Grand Slam Filly Comes Up Big... Bronze medal position in the breeding stock section, and fourth overall, went to another Haras desCapucines consignee when Anthony Stroud hit hisbudget limit of i265,000 for Hip 223, Just Little (Fr)(Grand Slam). AI bought this filly for an Irish breeder andshe will be bred next year,@ said Stroud of last term=sG3 Prix Vanteaux victress. AShe was good on thecourse and, hopefully, she will be good in the breedingshed. The market is difficult and people are very selec-tive, more than ever in these rough periods we aregoing through. She sold for exactly what I could pay forher, and I could not go much further than that.@ Sellingcontinues at 11 a.m. today. The catalogue and updatescan be found at www.arqana.com.
