A generous donation by the Dainton family in memory of the University’sformer Chancellor is a major boost to our scholarship fund.

Nearly 60,000 students received their degrees from Lord Dainton during his tenureas Chancellor of the University. He presided over 187 degree ceremonies from 1978-1997, giving a different speech at each one, remarking that ‘it has always seemed tome that there was no point in having a degree ceremony unless it was madememorable for each individual, his or her family and friends.’

Lord Dainton introduced the Chancellor’s Medal to reward outstanding achievement within theUniversity community and he was delighted that the Chemistry building was named after him in 1993.His contacts, both national and international, were of tremendous value to the institution; and ‘Sir Fred’, as he was universally known, was proud to serve a university of his native city.

The Dainton ScholarshipsIn recognition of Sir Fred’s association with the University of Sheffield and the region, the Daintonfamily has established a scholarship fund to assist talented students who suffer financial hardship.

“I’m delighted by the support and interest that Lady Dainton and her children Rosalind, Mary and Johnand her daughter-in-law Josephine have demonstrated by this generous donation,” said MilesStevenson, Director of Development. “Their £100,000 donation will ensure that we continue to awardsix annual Dainton Scholarships, each of which supports a student during their undergraduate degree.”

The first recipientsSam Coveney and Joy French are the first two recipients of Dainton Scholarships. Sam is studyingTheoretical Physics, with the aim of becoming a Physics teacher. Joy is planning to follow a career inresearch after her Plant Science degree.

I am very pleased to welcomeyou to the 2008 edition ofDonor News, my first as Vice-Chancellor. This is one of theways that I hope to keep intouch with you over thecoming years, and to let youknow what fantastic progresswe are making in Sheffield, with your help.

Since I arrived in my newpost, I have been struck bythe genuine affection that

Sheffield students, staff and alumni have for the University and thecity. The stories in this Donor News reflect the tide of good willthat is benefiting the University, and I am proud to be involved.

There seems to be a unique quality to people who have the goodfortune to live and study in Sheffield that is hard to sum up; adistinctive but understated ingenuity you could say. But one aspectof the ‘Sheffield character’ that is very clear to me is generosity.

In the short time since I came to the city, I have had the pleasure ofmeeting alumni and friends who are helping to make the Universitya better place by supporting the areas that they care about. I havealso met many students who have directly benefited from thisgenerosity, and I can tell you that the impact is above meremonetary value. This generosity has the power to change lives.

So, welcome to Donor News, enjoy catching up with developmentshere on campus, and I look forward to staying in touch with you.

This year we celebratefive years of theAlumni Fund – andthere’s a lot tocelebrate.

In 2003 we had one full-time member of staff, seven

student callers and six donorscontributing a total of £100 per

year. Now we have a team of threefull-time members of staff, 25 student

callers, two student supervisors, three studentadministrators, 4,500 donors and more than £500,000 raisedin cash to support current students.

Through our successful telephone programme, our studentcallers have attempted to contact more than 30,000 alumni, and have spoken personally with over 11,000. We’re verygrateful that over 300 of our donors are now members of ourSilver Arrows regular giving circle – contributing over £50,000to the Alumni Fund every year – and that 52 donors havejoined our Firth Circle leadership gift club so far.

Most importantly though, your donations have:

• funded 132 undergraduate and six postgraduatescholarships of £2,000 each

• provided £10,000 of computer equipment to halls ofresidence

• provided £60,000 worth of books, computerequipment and high-quality furniture to theInformation Commons

• awarded more than £120,000 of Alumni Foundationgrants to more than 150 student clubs, societies andorganisations.

We’d like to say a huge THANK YOU to each and every one ofyou who have made donations of all sizes to support ourstudents through the Alumni Fund. As you can see from the listof impressive achievements (left), your gifts have thecollective power to make a huge difference to our students’lives. You are helping to provide young people with aneducation, with valuable life skills, and with real hope for theirfuture – an amazing gift.

A growing number of people have very kindly contacted us toask for a donation form on receiving Donor News – so we haveincluded one in this year’s edition. But whether or not you areable to make a donation at the moment, we at the Alumni Fundwould like to express our heartfelt thanks to you all for yoursupport, encouragement and interest over our first five years. We are grateful and privileged to count you as our supporters– and we hope that over the next five years we can continue tomake you proud to be Alumni Fund donors. Here’s to anotherfive years of success!

The Alumni Foundation:Supporting student initiatives across the campus

The Vietnamese SocietyThe society, based in the Students’ Union, was launchedin 2005 and has already made a mark on campus withcolourful entertainments and activities. The membersaim to highlight the rich heritage of dance, music, literature, history and food of Vietnam, as well ascelebrating the country’s beauty and attractions.

Paul Kilner, the society’s treasurer, explained: “Fundingfrom the Alumni Foundation was used to help us facilitatea range of high profile events. These includedperformances of our bamboo dance at the Intro Fiestaand also on Channel 4’s Paul O’Grady Show, with otherVietnamese students from Leeds. Also, Lien-Dinh-Bach, aclassical pianist, performed a concert in Firth Hall as partof our Vietnamese celebration day.

“These events were designed to achieve the society’sgoals of encouraging students from Vietnam to come tothe UK; to inspire and empower residents of Sheffieldand fellow students; and to promote Vietnamese value ofacceptance, tolerance and respect for all culturesthrough dance, music and cultural awareness andexchange.”

We are always delighted by the range of projects that are submitted tothe Alumni Foundation by students and staff. Here are a few examplesof those that received grants in 2007:

Student Services Information DeskThe Student Services Information Desk (SSiD) offers frontlinesupport for prospective students, current students andvisitors on campus. SSiD was the first unit of its kind to beestablished in the UK and has been cited nationally as anexample of good practice.

To mark the tenth anniversary of SSiD’s formation, the AlumniFoundation provided a grant for a large plasma screen thathas been sited at the unit’s entrance. This is used to displayup-to-date, relevant news and information for students, bothduring and out of office hours.

SSiD is located in the Students’ Union, opposite an area wherestudents sit to eat their lunch and where societies gather; thisis an ideal place to provide ‘news flashes’. The display canreproduce a range of information, from a diary of upcomingkey dates to details of the University Health Service’sprovision.

The Children’s ProjectPart of the multi-award-winning SheffieldVolunteering scheme in the Students’ Union, theChildren’s Project works with children who experience some difficulty in their home life. Theproject is organised in conjunction with the Family Welfare Association and Springfield Primary,Norfolk Park Community and Emmaus Schools; 35 children, aged between 8 and 11, took part in2007.

At the start of the year, 40 student volunteers were recruited and given training in behaviouralmanagement and child protection. The project would not be possible without their commitmentand dedication. The programme of events included seven day trips and an action-packed, five dayholiday. A grant from the Alumni Foundation supported the holiday activities, which includedcanoeing, rock climbing, a visit to Lightwater Valley Theme Park and evening entertainment.

“As the children were dropped off at home on the final day their beaming faces proved to thevolunteers how much their hard work was appreciated,” said Helen Giorgi ofSheffieldVolunteering. “The holiday had been a great success, showing just how important thework of the Children’s Project is for Sheffield’s disadvantaged children. A big ‘thank you’ to theAlumni Foundation for their support.”

The School of Architecture began in 1908 as a shared initiativebetween the new University and the Sheffield Society ofArchitects. William Purchon was appointed as the first lecturerfor the then three-year architecture course. Before 1914, theSchool had about a dozen students but by 1952 numbers hadrisen to around 200; today there are 486 full-time students, with over 25 academic staff. The Faculty of ArchitecturalStudies was created in 1965, when the School moved into theplace it now calls home, the University’s Arts Tower.

The Alumni Foundation has provided funding for a CentenaryHistory. University of Sheffield School of Architecture 1908-2008 has been written by Professor Peter Blundell Jones,Head of Humanities in the School. Richly illustrated, it coversthe changing character of the School, the nature of studentwork, the changing curriculum, theory, teaching methods andtechnologies, the range and type of projects undertaken, thecontributions of staff, the accomplishments of distinguishedalumni… and much more.

The book is priced £10.00 (plus postage): [email protected] for further details.

Architecture’s CentenaryThis year marks 100 years of Architecture as a taughtsubject at the University. The School has risen frommodest local roots to international prominence – anachievement to be celebrated throughout 2008. Plannedevents include a lecture series, a major exhibition and analumni reunion. For more information about theCentenary visit the School of Architecture’s websitehttp://www.shef.ac.uk/architecture/alumni

Celebrating 100 years of student representationStanding up for Students is a Centenary History of the Students’Union that provides an entertaining account of the developmentof the Union through its first ten decades. We believe that this isthe first history of a British Students’ Union, and we werepleased to make an Alumni Foundation contribution towards its cost.

Written by Dr Helen Mathers, information was compiled from awide variety of sources including interviews of former Unionofficers conducted by students from the Department of History.

The first Students’ Representative Council was formed in 1906,becoming the Union of Students in 1921. The struggle to get aproper Union building lasted 30 years until Sheffield benefactorAlderman JG Graves donated £15,000, “as a personal gift to thestudents of the University”. By the 1990s Sheffield was ashowpiece for other Unions to emulate; and it has been awardedthe national title of Students’ Union of the Year in 2001, 2004 and 2007.

Standing up for Students is also a photographic record of thedevelopment of student life at Sheffield. We are sure that ouralumni will find something here that jogs a particular memory oftheir time on campus.

Standing up for Students is now available from the Studio Shopin the Students’ Union (call 0114 222 8667), or by downloadingan order form from www.sheffield.ac.uk/union/pages/centenarybook. The price is £9.99 (plus £1 postage).

A record number of students are celebrating this year, following our annual Alumni Scholarships presentationreception at Christmas.

In addition to 32 new undergraduate scholarships of £2,000each, for the first time alumni donations also helped to fundsix new postgraduate scholarships of the same amount. Thesescholarships were awarded to students who completed theirundergraduate degree at Sheffield, and who are now studyingfor a taught Master’s degree.

The 38 delighted scholarship recipients were presented withtheir cheques by one of our current donors, and a formermember of University staff, Professor John Roach. And thisyear, entertainment was provided by two societies whorecently received Alumni Foundation grants: carols were sungby the University Gospel Choir, followed by an energeticpercussion performance from the Samba Society.

The well-travelled studentOriginally from Ghana and now based inNorway, Simon Duphey came toSheffield to undertake research in theDepartment of Geography. He isstudying the effects of the HIV/AIDSpandemic on rural livelihoods withinthe Ghana/Togo border region in WestAfrica, and is in the third year of hisPhD programme.

Simon was originally funded by theNorwegian government, but due to achange in the lending arrangements, the third year of the loan waswithdrawn. Through the Developmentand Alumni Relations Office, Simon wasput in touch with the Greenside Trust, aprivate family trust run by a retiredmember of staff, which supportsinternational students. He was awardeda £2,000 scholarship to help himcomplete his degree.

“I’m somebody who likes to touch thelives of people; I have a compassion forhumanity,” explained Simon. “AIDS ishaving a great impact on sub-SaharanAfrica and I want to be able to help my

people. A PhD will mean that I will be ina better position to make acontribution. I thought I was dreamingwhen I heard about the scholarship. Iam very, very happy. It has relieved thetension. Abandoning my PhD wouldhave been too much to bear and I amnow reinvigorated.”

A strong vocationBlerta Ilazi came to the UK eight yearsago as a refugee from Kosovo, with noknowledge of English or the culturehere. She had completed a nursingdiploma in her home country, with theambition of becoming a doctor: “Duringthe war I worked as a volunteer nursein the refugee camp, where I cared formany people struggling with thephysical and psychological trauma ofthe war. Their courage and willingnessto continue fighting despite diminishinghopes reinforced my enthusiasm tobecome a doctor.”

Blerta was rescued by the British armyand brought to Sheffield. She studiedEnglish and completed a health andscience access course, and then the

Advanced Diploma in Nursing at theUniversity. She followed this by applyingto study medicine. Her determinationimpressed the Dean of Medicine,Professor Tony Weetman, and she wasaccepted on to the course.

However, Blerta had problems securingthe necessary funding. Helen Scarlett,Associate Director of Development, takes up the story: “I was approachedby a Sheffield medical graduate whowanted to give £5,000 to support amedical student. I suggested that themoney should be used to help Blerta. The gift is being given in £1,000instalments over five years. We are alsofinding other sources of money, fromexisting endowments, to make surethat Blerta can complete her degree.”

“I have met my donor,” said Blerta. “As adoctor herself, she knows what it’s liketo undertake this degree, and her helphas been marvellous. I want to inspireyoung women: go for something thatyou think is worthwhile. I want to work,to contribute, and when I qualify I’dlove to stay in England.”

A practical PhDBen Eaton (BA English Literature 2004)is in the second year of his PhD, basedwithin the School of English Language,Literature and Linguistics. A talentedperformer with production links withthe Crucible and the West YorkshirePlayhouse, Ben is the first person toundertake a ‘practice as research’ PhDat the University, and is investigating hisown practice as an artist within theatre. He is the recipient of a scholarshipdonated by two alumni who wish toremain anonymous.

“My research is feeding into the work Imake; the research and work informeach other. The scholarship isincredibly generous and important tome. I was in a difficult position toaccess a grant via the traditional PhDfunding routes. I now have the freedomto do what I want to do. It’s fantasticthat there are people who want to helpstudents like me.”

Behind the scenes

The scholarships selectionprocess explainedAs the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for ExternalRelations, I’m proud to be charged with theimportant role of chairing the annual AlumniScholarships Selection Panel. Theapplications we receive for financialassistance are extremely compelling, andoften very moving, and the task of having todecide between one very deserving candidateand another is extremely difficult.

So, how do we make these difficult decisionsand ensure that they are objective and fair? The panel has five members: myself as Chair, the Director of Development (Miles

Stevenson), the Head of Annual Giving (Ruth Stanley), a member of theUniversity’s Financial Support Team and a member of academic staff. TheFinancial Support Team identify from their central records all students who areeligible for financial assistance and send them our Alumni Scholarshipapplication form. Students are asked to tell us a little about their circumstancesand how an Alumni Scholarship would make a difference to them.

Each panel member then reviews all the applications separately, with a clearindication of financial need being the most important criterion. Our results arecollated and combined, and then reviewed at our annual meeting.

We receive applications from students with many different, and difficult, personal circumstances: candidates from single-parent families; those whoeither have a registered disability or whose parents are unable to work due todisability; those who are the primary carer for children or other dependents;and those who come from areas of the country and/or schools where there islittle or no tradition of applying to study at university, or where they are thefirst person in their family to attend university.

What they all have in common is that they have worked extremely hard, and inmany cases have already made considerable sacrifices, to win a place atuniversity. Through the Alumni Scholarships we can ensure that at least someof them are not put at a disadvantage during their time here because of theirpersonal or financial circumstances. Your donations help them to focus andachieve the best they possibly can.

We currently receive more than 150 applications for the Alumni Scholarshipsevery year, so we still have to turn away many students deserving of support.I’m extremely grateful to all of you who are supporting this very worthy cause. Ihope that you will continue to do so over the coming years – and make our joba little easier!

Thank you all for your support.

The University of Sheffield in America is our sister organisation in the USA. It is a 501(c)(3) organisation registered to receive taxdeductible donations, which is good news for any US taxpayerswho enjoy supporting progress and success in Sheffield.

This year’s fundraising total is $28,700, bringing the grand totalgiven by US Sheffield alumni to over $170,000; 196 individualsupporters have given, which means that one in ten US alumni aresupporting their University from across the pond.

Focus on scholarshipsThe University of Sheffield in America Board of Directors, which is made up entirely of Sheffield alumni, decided to uselast year’s funds to support students directly.

Scholarships for talented students experiencing financialhardship are perhaps the most effective way to make a directimpact on the success of a Sheffield education. So theDirectors decided to target this area and provide fiveadditional undergraduate scholarships worth $4,000 each.

Nicole Patel, pictured left, a current SocialWork student, would like to tell you howmuch this extra help has meant to her:“Receiving the US Alumni Scholarship hashelped me so much throughout this year.Coming from a low income household andliving away from home meant that Istruggled a lot to survive in terms of food

and basic resources. This extra money has helped me to getthrough the academic year with all the books I need, and it alsohelped me to take part in voluntary work over the summer. Ivolunteered in a nursery, a care home and the Vista BlindPeople’s Society and feel that I really benefited from thisexperience. I really want to become a social worker, so themoney is not only helping me, but helping me to help others.”

New postgraduate awardA generous donation of $5,000 from theUS-based Reidler Foundation hasenabled us to provide our first US-funded postgraduate scholarship. The Reidler Foundation Scholarship hasbeen awarded to India Foster, picturedfar left, who is studying for a Master’s inGlobal Politics and Law. We would like tothank the Trustees of The ReidlerFoundation for their interest in theUniversity of Sheffield and our students.

A celebration of Sheffield on the west coastAlumni from in and around California enjoyed stunning views ofthe Golden Gate Bridge (on a rare spring day without fog) as theydined together 52 storeys above the city of San Francisco in theCarnelian Room. The reunion was hosted by former Vice-Chancellor Professor Bob Boucher and Nobel Laureate Dr Rich Roberts, who many will know as the Chair of the USfundraising campaign. We were delighted to welcome Sheffieldgraduates from as far afield as Kansas, Texas and Massachusettsas we celebrated our strengthening links and fundraising success.

Thanks to thesupport andenthusiasm shown byour Canadian alumniat an alumni

reception in Toronto last year, we havebeen able to launch a new branch of theAlumni Fund to enable Canadian graduatesto make tax-deductible donations to theUniversity.

The Canada Alumni Fund was launchedlast November, with the help of ourCampaign Chair, Maureen McTeer (MA 2003). She was the first Canadian togain a Master’s degree in Biotechnical Lawand Ethics at Sheffield. Maureen has verygenerously pledged $1,000 per year forthe next five years to the Canada AlumniFund, and the rest of our Canadian alumnihave also risen to the challenge withenthusiasm. To date, they have raised over$10,000 in gifts and confirmed pledges.

Donations to the Canada Alumni Fund, likethose to the Alumni Fund, will help toprovide crucial student support in the formof scholarships, study resources and AlumniFoundation grants for clubs and societies.

“We are all proud of our connections withthe University of Sheffield, whichconsistently ranks as one of the UK’s topuniversities,” said Maureen. “I am pleasedto be able to lead our Canadianfundraising efforts and am delighted withthe response of our 450 Canadiangraduates. We all want others toexperience Sheffield’s academic and socialprograms as we did. Stay tuned to seehow we will build on the success of theCanada Alumni Fund in the coming year.”

Continued support for theUniversityEdith (BA General Arts 1951, Diploma ofEducation 1952) and Arthur Fieldsend(MB ChB 1952) were great supporters ofthe University. Edith died in 2007 andleft a bequest in her Will of £5,000 toestablish prizes for the Faculty ofMedicine. “The couple devoted much oftheir time to helping the University,” saidMiles Stevenson, Director ofDevelopment, “and the bequest reflectstheir dedication. They also had a greatinterest in China and funded a Chineseacademic, Dr ZhiJian Yao, to come toSheffield in 2003-04 to undertakepostgraduate studies in MagneticResonance Imaging.”

Media Hub boosts students’ creative outputThanks to the generosity of alumna Kathleen Rogers (BA English Literature 1934, MA English Literature 1935), aspiring student journalists of newsprint, radio and webmedia now have access to an outstanding resource at the University’s Media Hub inthe Students’ Union.

This comprehensive facility, providing the latest technology for print and webpublishing, design, audio and video, is the new home of the weekly studentnewspaper Sheffield Steel Press (formerly Darts), the student website ShefBase.comand the student radio station Sure.

And this isn’t just a bit of fun. The output from these student-run ventures hasreceived national recognition. Sheffield Steel Press was named Best StudentNewspaper at last year’s National Student Journalism Awards; and Felicity Hay wonStudent Reporter of the Year in the Guardian Awards, and Student Reporter andStudent Journalist of the Year at the Press Gazette Awards.

Mrs Rogers left a gift of £14,000 in her Will to the Alumni Foundation. Afterconsidering many applications for funding, the Foundation committee decided toback our talented student journalists and help to fund this outstanding new resource.Additional funding for the project came from the Students’ Union and Convocation.

In memory of a local steelmagnateDoreen Worthington (BA Classics 1939),daughter of local steel manufacturerHarry Worthington, honoured herfather’s memory by establishing some ofthe highest value scholarships at theUniversity of Sheffield.

She left the sum of £862,000 to theUniversity in her Will to providepostgraduate scholarships of £12,000per annum plus tuition fees, and travelscholarships of up to £2,000 per annum, enabling students to attend internationalclassical music festivals. Generosity atthis level is rare and it speaks volumes ofMiss Worthington’s respect for herfather and for her University.

Scholarship fund is doubledby former recipientMargaret (Peggy) Bond (BSc Science1939, Diploma of Education 1940) wonan Ethel Middleton Scholarship to cometo the University of Sheffield fromSheffield Girls Central School (now HighStorrs School) in 1936. She often saidthat, without the £27 prize, she couldnot possibly have gone to university asher father was frequently unemployed.

Later, as Peggy Tomlin – she marriedDon Tomlin (BSc Physics 1940) afterstudying with him through school andUniversity – she remembered theopportunity she had been given, andincluded a gift to the scholarship fund inher Will. Don has subsequently added tothe amount as a tribute to her.

Peggy and Don Tomlin have been activesupporters and friends of the Universitythroughout their lives, and since herdeath last year her presence has beensadly missed. It is a fitting tribute to hermemory that their generous gifts havealmost doubled the value of the EthelMiddleton Scholarship fund, enablingeven more local students to receivescholarship assistance to study at theUniversity. We are very grateful to bothfor their contributions and especially forPeggy’s kindness and generosity overthe years.

Ethel Middleton was a student atSheffield University College and laterbecame a teacher at the Central School, where she taught mathematics for 17years until her death in 1916. Her fatherset up the scholarship fund in hermemory. It is jointly held andadministered by the University ofSheffield and High Storrs School. Thetwo latest Ethel Middleton scholars areRohan Farrimond and Jamie Hallet.Rohan is studying Medicine and JamieAccounting and Financial Management.Don Tomlin (BSc Physics 1940) with Ethel Middleton scholar Jamie Hallett

Coming back, giving back – Reunion giving

In September 2007 the University held its first-ever AlumniAnniversary Reunion for the classes of 1947, 1957, 1967, 1977and 1982. To mark the anniversaries of their graduation, each class member was asked to make a donation to theirparticular Anniversary Campaign. Collectively, the fiveclasses raised a fantastic £15,000 for the Alumni Fund -thank you very much indeed to all who made a donation. Wehope that future anniversary classes will build on thesuccess of this first Anniversary Campaign, and help futuregenerations of students at Sheffield.

The Development and Alumni Relations Office in action!

Following last year’s successful project when we planted acommunity orchard, the Development and Alumni Relationsteam once again braved the elements for a local volunteeringproject as part of SheffieldVolunteering’s Just Do It! scheme.

We spent a day at St Marie’s RC Primary School in Fulwood, painting a mural and giant game boards in the schoolplayground: a Simpsons mural, a noughts and crosses board, and a giant snakes and ladders board! Great fun was had by alland, to our great relief, the weather held up.

“Our student volunteers do so much for the local community,so we thought ‘Let's give a hand too’,” said Miles Stevenson,Director of Development. “And we were delighted to discoverour own hidden artistic talents!”
