CIBSE is publishing a new Carrier CPD on assessing the efficiency of water chillers for comfort cooling in commercial buildings.

The module, which appears in the October issue of CIBSE Journal, highlights the differ-ences in approach between various efficiency ratings, and the implications for building services design.

It concludes that, while EER, SEER and ESEER provide standardised values of efficiency, they are not necessarily good indicators of ‘real’ system efficiency. A new approach, based on Plant Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (PSEER), is recommended.

Carrier is supplying two high performance, high efficiency air-cooled AquaSnap chillers for a new research and develop-ment centre at one of the United Kingdom’s leading engineering companies.

The AquaSnap 30RBP 430 liquid chillers, equipped with Greenspeed intelligence and based on Carrier scroll com-pressors, will augment existing Carrier chillers at the company’s headquarters, providing a total of 2000kW of cooling for the new

R&D facility, administrative offices, and catering and communal areas.

The chillers are equipped with two refrigerant circuits, with three compressors in each circuit, giving excellent resilience and reliability – key factors in the specification.

OutstandingRuss Tyrrell, Carrier’s senior sales engineer who headed up the project, said: “The client’s business depends on continuity of cooling to ensure the quality of industrial processes and to maintain the comfort of staff. The Carrier chill-ers already on site have proven themselves over many years of reliable, efficient operation. This track record, coupled with the outstanding performance of the new units, provided a compelling solution to its requirements for expanding capacity at the site.”

Latest DesignAirs package includes seasonal calculator, 3D output and variable tariffs

Toshiba, a CIBSE-accredited train-ing provider, is preparing a series of new CPD modules as part of our ongoing support for customers and the industry.

Topics will include:· Refrigerants:· F-Gas;· A basic guide to air conditioning;· VRF - Variable Refrigerant Flow air conditioning systems.

Also in preparation is a mod-ule on EN378, highlighting the requirements and the practical consequences for air conditioning applications.

For more details, contact Neil Hitching on 07712 790 866 or email neil.hitching@toshiba-ac.

Toshiba has launched the latest version of its air conditioning design platform, Desig-nAirs, for use by contractors, designers and consultants.

DesignAirs is an advanced air condition-ing design application that enables users to create detailed project drawings, including pipework and equipment specifications, for a variety of building types.

The latest generation includes a new seasonal performance calculator that allows designers to simulate the actual perfor-mance and running costs of a system using local seasonal temperatures and conditions.

It also allows users to specify different electricity tariffs, in order to estimate run-ning costs under different supply scenarios. Designers can print out a report to show the anticipated running costs of a system for end users, and how much CO2 it will produce in a year.

The design platform has three-dimension-al capabilities that can generate schematic drawings showing pipework routing, out-door/indoor unit and FS box locations, pro-viding a clear overview of the installation for the contractor and end user. This also can be used to highlight any potential issues with a design in relation to oil traps and height difference separation.

Unlike other design software that outputs design elements as separate drawings, the new DesignAirs system can generate a single page view showing all elements of a system, either as a PDF or an AutoCAD file.

Alongside the upgraded version of Desig-nAirs, we have also produced new Building Information Modelling (BIM) software for use with Autodesk Revit, the industry stan-dard BIM platform.

Used for creating and managing informa-tion on construction projects, one of the key outputs of the BIM software is a digital model detailing many aspects of a building. The enhancement includes BIM Revit icons to be used in Autodesk Revit to represent

specific items of equipment in a building’s HVAC system.

Toshiba’s newly updated suite of digital BIM Revit icons covers its digital inverter and super digital inverter ranges, SMMS-e and SHRM-e VRF systems and CIAT air han-dling units, heat pumps and chillers.

Oliver Sanders, Toshiba’s pre-sales manag-er who leads digital project design support, said: “Together, the new DesignAirs platform and BIM family provide air conditioning designers with a complete tool-kit, enabling them to create detailed project plans for all scales and types of buildings. They are a must-have for all contractors and consul-tants who design air conditioning systems.”

New brochures highlight benefits of R32 for users and environmentA new suite of brochures is now available with up-to-date infor-mation on Mirai and Daiseikai air conditioning systems, including R32 options.

It follows our recent move to R32 refrigerant as the interim replacement for R410A, which is being phased out under F-Gas legislation.

The publications highlight the benefits of using R32 for end users and the environ-ment. David Dunn said: “Customers may be aware of the significantly lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) of R32 com-pared with outgoing R410A. However, it is not widely appreciated that use of R32 also enables Toshiba to reduce refrigerant

charge in systems by some 30per cent.” To download the brochures, click the

CIAT’s Vectios is a new generation of high per-formance packaged roof-top air conditioning units, designed from the ground up to deliver outstanding indoor air quality, excellent energy efficiency and significantly reduced cost of ownership. Vectios has five key advantages:

Excellent energy efficiencyCIAT’s priority was to optimise the design, component selection and control strategy to maximise efficiency and minimise the system’s impact on the environment. In doing this, the company has gone beyond the requirements of the forthcoming 2021 Ecodesign update (which will require a SEER greater than 3.53 and SCOP greater than 3.20), exceeding them by up to 20per cent compared to Tier 1. This gives end users a substantial advantage in terms of both future compliance and ongoing running costs during the life-time of the plant. There is a thermal wheel option for heat recovery, with constant or variable speed versions avail-able, further enhancing the system’s energy performance.

FlexibilityVectios offers a full range of options enabling it to be customised for use in a wide range of applications. This includes optimised dimen-sions and weight for a perfect fit in both new

or refurbishment projects. Other options include:• Variable Air Volume: Dampers for each room based on temperature requirement.• Low temperature option for use in food hy-giene areas, enabling a low return tempera-ture of 15ºC, with a free-cooling option.• Energy recovery coil for producing hot water from the refrigeration condenser.• Active and enhanced dehumidification, for use in high humidity ambient conditions.• Several filtration options, to provide

optimum air quality to suit a wide range of applications.

Outstanding reliabilityCIAT has designed Vectios to be highly reliable, with easy access for contractors to facilitate periodic maintenance and servicing.

Wide range Reversible heat pump versions are available from 20kW to 100kW with operating condi-tions from -15ºC to 48ºC ambient air. Cooling-only versions are available for operation at up to 52ºC ambients.

Intelligent controlCIAT’s new control system, Vectic, optimises the performance and efficiency of the system. It uses intelligent control and algorithms to maximise efficiency at part-load, increasing the seasonal efficiency and operational limits all-year-round. This also provides intelligent management of defrosts . By fully comply-ing with (and comfortably exceeding) the requirements of the forthcoming revisions to the Ecodesign Directive in 2021, the Vectios future-proofs end users and ensures a high quality indoor environment for building oc-cupants at the lowest possible cost. CIAT heat pump sales in Ireland power ahead with GlenergyWhile take-up of heat pumps in the UK re-mains relatively modest, the domestic heat pump market in Ireland is growing rapidly. Following a dip during the economic crash of 2008, heat pump sales there have risen spectacularly year-on-year, from around 1000 units in 2009 to more than 6000 last year, according to the Heat Pump Associa-tion of Ireland. Ken Lawlor, sales manager for Toshiba and CIAT in Ireland, says: “While many heat pump manufacturers here supply through builders merchants, our supply partner, Glenergy, is a specialist energy technology company, with deep knowledge and experi-ence of the renewables market. This gives us an important edge.

“It means we can have total confidence in the quality of installation and servicing, and have the assurance that the end user customer will get a top-notch installation that performs as intended. It is a win-win for all concerned.” Ireland’s heat pump market is highly com-petitive, however Ken Lawlor believes the company has a unique selling point, with both CIAT and Toshiba systems based on Toshiba’s pioneering two-stage compressor. “In terms of efficiency, reliability and quiet-ness, we believe it is in a class of its own. Coupled with CIAT’s excellent design, high specification and affordability, it offers a highly attractive option that we believe is compelling.”
