has been reported from Gulf of Mannar. Whileexamining the crustacean catches landed by largertrawlers, which operated in deeper waters offThoothukudi, three species of squat lobsters werenoticed. On closer examination, they were identifiedas Eumunida funambulus, Agononida eminens andMunida heteracantha, of which, the second and thirdspecies were new to Indian waters. The first species(Eumunida funambulus) is recorded from Gulf ofMannar for the first time, though it has been reportedearlier from southwest coast of India by George andRao (1966). Thus, the total number of squat lobstersfrom India now rose to 49. The taxonomic andsystematic position of three species reported hereis followed the new classification given by Schnabel& Ahyong (2010) and Schnabel et al. (2011) for theSuperfamily Chirostyloidea and by Ahyong et al.(2010) for the Superfamily Galatheoidea.

Superfamily: Chirostylidea Ortmann, 1892

Family: Eumunididae A. Milne Edwards &Bouvier, 1900

Genus: Eumunida Smith, 1883

Locality: 08º 53.6'N 78º 16'E and 08º 53.8'N 78º 32'Eoff Thoothukudi coast of Gulf of Mannar, Southeastcoast of India; depth at trawling 300 m.

Remarks: The description given by Gordon (1930)and Baba (1988) agree with the present specimen.Carapace rounded with transverse ridges and armed

with 7 spines each on its anterolateral margins;rostrum short and more than one-third of thecarapace length; 3 hepatic spines runningbackwards and outwards from base of outersupraorbital spine; a very small spine presentoutside of these three spines on the left side, asobserved by (Gordon, 1930); thoracic sternitebearing third maxilliped with pair of spines and a V-shaped notch between the pair (Fig. 1B); sternitebearing chelipeds also with a stout lateral marginalspine on each side.

Colour: Carapace dark brown and abdomen lightyellowish brown; rostrum, supraorbital spines andthose spines on anterolateral border of carapaceand legs with white tips.

Distribution: This species has been recorded earlierfrom off Alappuzha, southwest coast of India at338 m (George and Rao, 1966). The present recordfrom Thoothukudi coast in Gulf of Mannar extendsits distribution to the southeast coast of India.Other records from Indo-Pacific region are from Gulfof Aden, Socotra Channel between Aden andMumbai, Madura Strait, Java, Kwandang Bay, NorthCelebes, off North Mindanao, between Cebu andBohol, South China Sea off Southwest Luzon, SahulBank, south of Timor, East coast of Kyushu, Japan(Baba et al., 2008).

Remarks: The specimen on hand agrees with thedescription given by Baba (1988). Carapace slightlylonger than wide; gastric region bordered anteriorlyby distinct groove and posteriorly by cervicalgroove; a pair of epigastr ic spines behindsupraocular spines; transverse ridges mostlyinterrupted; sternal segments comparatively widerand short; anterior margin of third thoracic sternumroughly transverse, but weakly undulating;following sternum widely triangular, in contact withabout 1/3 of posterior margin of preceding sternum(Fig. 2B); chelipeds similar in size, subcylindrical, squamate, setiferous except for chela, 3 times aslong as carapace including rostrum; . epipods absentfrom all pereopods.

Distribution: This species has been reported fromIndonesia, Philippines, New Caledonia, Vanuatu,Loyalty Islands, Chesterfield Islands, Combe Bank,Tuscaroa Bank, Rotumah Bank, Queensland andSouthwest Australia (Baba et al., 2008). The presentrecord from Thoothukudi coast of Gulf of Mannaris the first one from Western Indian Ocean.
