The SchoolWelcome to the Devon School of Shiatsu programmeof courses for 2010/2011. The school was established by OliverCowmeadow in 1985 and was one of the very first schools in theUK offering in depth shiatsu training. It has the ideal setting forstudy, based in its own rooms in a converted barn and stable a fewmiles from Totnes, a mainline railway station, in peacefulDevonshire countryside.

In its training the school places great emphasis on thedevelopment of compassionate and healing hands-on work. Theeffectiveness of this bodywork is made greater by thoroughteaching on how to give clients recommendations on dietary andlifestyle changes, and specific exercise programmes.

We believe the personal development of students is essential in training mature andcompetent practitioners, and we use tutorials and class workshops to support the emotionalgrowth of our students. There is ample opportunity for students to ask individual questionsand get personal support from the teachers and teaching assistants present in every class.

The school has gained an excellent reputation for its in-depth teaching on how to approach awide variety of health problems with shiatsu, fully preparing students for a busy clinical practice. It has trained many successful graduates, with established practices across the UK and theworld.

We have a strong and dedicated teaching faculty who are all engaged in clinical practice, andour students regularly express what a life changing, enjoyable time training in shiatsu has been– making new friends, finding a new vocation in life, learning about themselves and helpingothers along the way.

Oliver Cowmeadow

What is Shiatsu?Shiatsu has its roots in the ancient tradition of Oriental Medicine, and developed in the lastfew centuries in Japan. Since its introduction to the West in the 1970’s, shiatsu has becomemore and more popular, and it now stands as a respected complementary medicine. Itsapproach is both in-depth and very effective for a wide range of health problems.

Shiatsu understands the human being as a system of energy (traditionally called Ki) thatcirculates in channels called meridians. These meridians have physical, psychological andspiritual functions. In shiatsu we contact the Ki and restore its natural flow by applyingpressure with the hands, thumbs or elbows and with simple stretching and movementtechniques. This can relieve many physical ailments and bring about healing on an emotional, mental and spiritual level.

As well as giving symptomatic relief for health problems, shiatsu also looks for the source of aproblem within a person and the way he or she is living their life. Addressing this deeper levelcan then bring about a deeper healing. Shiatsu is also used preventatively, by improving aperson’s underlying health and reducing their chances of becoming ill in the future.

Shiatsu as a CareerLife as a shiatsu practitioner offers independence and flexibility in your working life, the rewardof helping others heal and an everlasting path of learning about life and health.

Some practitioners work from a special room set aside in their home giving them flexibility inworking times, and others work in natural health centres or other clinics, with the convenienceof having support and tailored premises.

Your clinics can include private practices, charities, palliative care and corporate organisationsand opportunities within the NHS are also increasing.

Shiatsu is increasingly being used in hospices and centres for people with addiction problems, autism, HIV / AIDS and other specialised needs.

Who Studies Shiatsu?People from a wide variety of backgrounds choose to study shiatsu, for example nurses andmidwives wanting a more hands-on and intuitive approach to health, yoga teachers, massagetherapists who are interested in taking their bodywork to a deeper level or people whoalready practice a complementary therapy such as reflexology or aromatherapy or people whohave raised a family and now have time to devote to a new career which fits with their familycommitments.

Past students have also come from a wide range of backgrounds such as stone masonry, thenavy, sales & marketing and education. The primary focus has been wanting a new challenge inlife and a practical and hands-on approach to helping others.
