Task 3
Using a variety of sources, carry out a market analysis of
the thriller genre for the year 2011 and present your findings
as a slideshare. I will find out:
• How many thriller films were released in this period
• How profitable the genre is
• Which films were most successful (and why)
• What are the characteristics of the audience for this
genre
How many thrillers were released in 2011?
There were 179 thriller films released in 2011 according to
Movieweb.com
How profitable is the Thriller genre?
I found this chat from the following website:

As you can see from the chart on the last slide on
average a Thriller film makes £53.848.079.09. This is a
huge amount of money for releasing a film. However,
you can also see that this is no where near the genre
that makes the most money. In fact, the Thriller genre
is fifth on the list of what genre generates the most
money.
Which films were most successful (and why)?
Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011)
This was successful because a lot of money was spent on
advertising the film. Also this was the second Mission
Impossible film and the first one was a huge success so
people wanted to watch the second. Lastly there were
some big actors in it such as Tom Cruise. Which obviously
helped the image of the film whilst it was being advertised.
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011)
Directed by David Fincher and starring Daniel Craig
and Rooney Mara, the film is based on the first novel
in a trilogy, which altogether have sold 50 million
copies in 46 countries and become a worldwide
phenomenon. One of the reasons for its success in
my opinion is the fact it reached 46 different
countries! This is a huge achievement for a film.
Obviously the more countries the film is in, the more
people will see it, the more they will make from it.Stats from movieweb.com
A thriller is a book or film which is designed to keep
the reader or viewer on edge with suspenseful and
sensational action. Therefore the audience are
usually aged 15+. This is because they usually have
age restrictions due to possible violence.
Social Class C1-D. I have produced these
characteristics myself. I used my own knowledge
thinking about our audience feedback and also
who most thriller films are aimed at. For example
there are not many thriller films with less than the
age of 15 as the guideline.
Characteristics of a viewer
In conclusion thriller films are aimed at 16+ year olds
because of their age restrictions. They need to involve
some action and violence which I will try to put into my
opening sequence after looking at this research.
