    TRENDS

Fall/Winter 2013/2014 will not disappoint when it comes to jewelry andaccessory trends. From rocker chic to romantic there is something foreveryone. Details such as layers, textures, pearls and faux fur adorn youraccessories this season.

The same fashion trends you see for your Fall Fashions are the sametrends you see in your accessories. Think about the Vegan Leather cloth-ing you are seeing everywhere, its no different with your accessories.Necklaces with vegan leather cording instead of chain, wide cuff brace-lets with vegan leather bands or even scarves with vegan leather trim.

What are your favorite fashion trends this fall? Pantone Color of theYear Emerald? Or is it the layering of feminine texture or the mix ofpattern? Do you like gold, silver, resin or natural stone? What about thestructured suiting trend (think mens wear meets Dynasty with a bit offeminine softness).

This fall the statement piece is the necklace. Last year we were layering, stacking and mixing as many bracelets as possible (this still looks greatbut we have moved up a bit). The statement necklace is a bold piecethat has color, texture, mixed metals or all of these elements. It is worndaytime or evening and has multi uses. The great part of the statement

necklace is you may purchase this beautiful necklace for that specialnight out but the next day you are layering it with two more necklacesand a casual T-shirt. Think outside that box!

Layering! Layering! Layering! Mix your necklaces, short and long.Add color, add sparkle and add personal style. There are very few ruleswhen layering the necklaces this fall. Choose a common theme or colorand mix away! Crystal, resin and semim precious stones can all be worntogether. The juxt and position of mixing formal and casual works great

    when layering.

Do you like the suiting trend this fall? Do you nd yourself wearingthe menswear inspired jackets? You will really enjoy wearing the singlechunky chain necklace and bracelet. These large link accessories workvery well with the tailored suiting pieces. Flat link is the trendiest of all.You can wear the 14k gold chain purchased from your local jeweler oryou can purchase the chunky at link chain as a fashion jewelry piece, either way you will enjoy the simplicity of this style.

To wear gold or not to wear gold, that is the biggest question! Gold jew-elry continues to be hot. Over the last decade silver jewelry has takenthe accessory world by storm. Platinum and white gold have dominated

the ne jewelry world. Sterling silver, stainless steel and silver- tonedfashion jewelry have been extremely popular for fashion jewelry. Mak-ing a come back is Yellow Gold! No matter if it is ne jewelry or fash-ion jewelry be sure that you look at gold when choosing a few newpieces of jewelry. v

Have FUN this season with yourlayering, mixing color and texture!

Its a common misconception among wom-en that in order to look your best, you needto devote ample time in front of the mirror

each morning. However, looking your bestfrom head-to-toe is much simpler than itsounds. Polly Blitzer, founder and editorin chief of BeautyBlitz.com offers a fewbeauty shortcuts to help you create a virtu-ally awless look!

Instant Beauty Pick-Me-UpStill recovering from the weekend? Withjust a few quick xes in the morning, youcan easily appear more rejuvenated and re-freshed! All it takes is a pop of color on yourface -- whether it is on your eyes, cheeks or

lips -- to give your overall beauty look acomplete boost. My personal secret beautyweapon for a more energized look is a brightlip color, particularly cherry red or fuchsia.Put Your Best Smile ForwardTransforming your smile to one that isbrighter and dazzling can literally makeheads turn, and a simple way to update yourbeauty look is to whiten your teeth. Fromthe #1 whitening brand recognized by topbeauty magazine editors, Crest 3D White is

a staple in my beauty routine. I recommendusing Crest 3D White Professional EffectsWhitestrips to start to see noticeably whiter

    teeth after just 1 day!

Create An Effortless Smokey Eye toTransition From Day to EveningWhen running from the ofce to cocktailswith friends, we dont always have the timeto seamlessly transition to an evening lookwith a full makeover. However, just a fewswipes of eyeliner, shadow and mascara canhelp you achieve a show-stopping smokeyeye in little to no time at all! To get this lookin a hurry, rim your lash line with black orgray eyeliner. Then dust brown or gray shad-

ow all over your lid and crease, making sureto blend the color up and outward. Lastly,to complete your hassle-free dramatic eyelook, apply two coats of black volumizingmascara and youre out the door!

And Of Course,Dont Forget to Stay Hydrated! The best tip I have for always looking yourabsolute best? Stay hydrated by drinking atleast eight glasses of water each day. This

can sometimes be challenging when youreon the go and nd yourself reaching for a hotcup of java to keep pushing through the day.

To help increase the amount of water youredrinking, I recommend squeezing fresh lem-on into the glass for a refreshing taste. v

It happens every year, summer is winding down and youre looking orward tosweatshirts and jeans, cool breezes and rosted mornings. On the other hand

your glorious tan lines and golden kissed skin tones are ading aster thanthe leaves on the trees. Fall is arriving and this is the perect time to renew, repair and reresh your skin. The summer months have exposed your skin toseveral aggressive elements including the sun, sand, insect repellents andtanning lotions. In the mirror your skin is looking rough, dry and drab. As aMedical Aesthetician Ive learned some helpul tips that can mean the dier-ence between transitioning fawlessly into all or alling behind with your skin.

#1 Start On The InsideSuper Hydrate. Drinking atleast 8 glasses of water per daywill keep your skin moistur-

ized and help eliminate toxins.Eating foods rich in Omega-3essential fatty acids and anti-oxidants such as Vitamins A,C and E can help reverse sum-mer damage and help prepareyour skin for the challenges itwill face during winter. My fa-vorites during fall are walnuts, pumpkin and squash.

#2 Re-Think Your CleanserDuring the summer months fruity gel cleansers are a populartreat. Ditch the oil robbing products and make sure your favoriteisnt drying out your skin. As the cooler weather sets in youllwant a face and body wash that is soap free as well as hydrating. One of my favorites is Beauty Marks Organic Orange CreamCleanser. A milky cleanser with anti-aging ingredients that isalso great for removing make-up.

#3 ExfoliateVisit your favorite aesthetician and indulge yourself with anenzyme mask or clinical grade chemical peel. Enzymes arenaturally derived from fruit and quickly digest and eliminatedead surface cells leaving your skin smooth and fresh. Thereare many different chemical peels available but I prefer to usea Modied Jessner Peel on most of my clients. Its a fantastic

blend of Lactic, Salicylic and Gly-colic acids that gives signicantexfoliation and brightening withoutthe down time typically associat-ed with traditional chemical peels.

Salt or sugar oil based body scrubsare best during colder months andbenets include mechanical exfo-liation (dead skin cells are rubbedoff with an abrasive) along withhydrating, vitamin packed oils. Isuggest body scrubs be used up totwice a week during the cooler-dry-er months to slough off dead skin

and help retain surface moisture. Brown Sugar Body Polish by Fresh has a superior blend of primrose, sweet almond, apricot kernel and jojoba oils.

#4 Moisturize Every DayI cannot stress this enough; if you wantto keep your skin supple and dewy duringfall you must moisturize on a daily basis.De-hydrating environmental elements areworking against you everywhere you go!

Even your car heater is de-hydrating yourskin! Facial products that contain emol-lients (which actually retain and draw at-mospheric moisture to the skin) are best.Body lotions that contain natural oils andbutters will help seal in moisture that theoutside environment is stripping away ev-eryday. Soap and Glorys The RighteousButter Body Lotion delivers the perfectlevel of moisture to dry skin. It is rich inshea and cocoa seed butters, rosehip seedoils, aloe vera and vitamin E.

#5 Shield Your Skin From The SunAlthough the suns radiation is less in-tense, you should continue protectingyour skin from damaging UV rays. Usea daily sunscreen that has an SPF of atleast 15 andremember to re-apply twicedaily for ultimate sun protection. Prepand Prime Beauty Balm by Mac is lightlytinted and creamily re-texurizes your skinand has an SPF of 35. v

    10 THRIVE - Autumn 2013

Autumn is the season when pumpkins are ripe for the pick-ing, and thousands of people ock to local farms and road-side vendors to select perfect pumpkins. Many pumpkinsare turned into decorative jack-o-lanterns for Halloween, only to be tossed in the trash come November 1. That could

be because many people are unaware of the various waysthey can put pumpkins to good use.

Pumpkins are gourds and members of the squash familyand have been grown and used for thousands of years. Evi-dence suggests that pumpkins date back to 7000 B.C., pos-sibly originating in Mexico. Today they are widely usedfor decorating around Halloween, but there are many otherthings that can be done with pumpkins.

    * Create a food vessel. Pumpkins can be transformed intobowls to hold soup, punch, fruit, or even dips. Make surethe pumpkin has been cleaned well of its pulp and seeds, as

well as the stringy esh that is inside. Rub the inside wallsof the pumpkin with oil to keep them from drying out andcaving in, then ll with your food of choice.

    * Make pumpkin puree. Puree from a pumpkin can beused in all types of recipes, from soups to baked goods. The puree also can replace the oil in cake recipes. Cut thepumpkin and scoop out the seeds and stringy membranes. Then place it cut-side-down in a pan with a little water inthe bottom. Bake at 350 F for around 90 minutes. The eshwill become tender and easily removable. Blend the result-

ing puree in a food processor and reserve esh for recipes. Some pumpkins are sweeter or better to use as part of reci-pes. Check the variety youre purchasing.

Whip up a facial. Use some pumpkin puree with a littlebrown sugar and a dash of milk to create a vitamin-richfacial mask.

Get illuminated. Turn hollowed-out mini pumpkinsinto candles. Melt soy wax, beeswax or the gel type ofcandle wax that can be found at most craft stores. Addyour favorite scent and place a wick into the bottom ofthe pumpkin. Then pour the wax into hallowed-out spaceand allow it to harden. Try the same thing with bumpy andmulti-colored gourds for added decorating appeal.

Turn the pumpkin into a ower pot. Fill a hollowpumpkin with soil. You may not have to worry about scrap-ing the pumpkin completely clean because the pulp can beused to help fertilize the potting soil. Plant your favorite

fall owers into the festive and earth-friendly ower pot. When the pumpkin shows signs of rotting, simply put thewhole thing into a traditional ower pot or bury it directlyin the ground.

Make pumpkin stock. While vegetable or meat-basedstocks may be the standards, pumpkin can be used to makestock as well. Clean out the seeds from the stringy guts ofthe pumpkin and put the guts into a pot lled with water.Add celery, carrots or any other aromatic vegetables forextra avor. Allow to boil for at least 30 minutes. The stockis ready when it begins to change color. Strain and reservethe stock for use in a variety of recipes.

Add to compost bins. Pumpkins are rich in zinc, vita-min A and vitamin C, among other nutrients. You can addthe discarded pumpkins to your backyard compost bins tofurther replenish the soil.

Turn into a billowing cauldron. Instead of a standardjack-o-lantern, put a glass jar into the carved pumpkin, add dish soap and hot water to the jar and then put in apiece of dry ice. Bubbles and smoke will pour out of thepumpkin to create a spooktacular effect.v

Put pumpkins to use in many different ways
