As we head into the Summer of 2020, we are all adapting and coping as best we can in a Covid-19 world. The Chamber is working hard to support our local businesses and to facili-tate successful visits to Maine by those who consider and then choose to visit here. We recognize that we can’t do any of this alone. We very much need each other to survive & thrive. This community is rich in tradition and history. We strive to represent all areas of busi-ness & industry in order that they may succeed. Visitors should note that although we are a tourist center, our residents live & work here year round and need all types of services – fish-erman, artisans, restaurants, teachers, electricians, plumbers, mechanics, boatbuilders, etc. As a Chamber it is important that we reflect that diversity and seek out ways to expand and welcome others to do business here too. To thrive long-term, we need to continue to actively welcome people to the region to supplement our workforce and be part of the next generation of entrepreneurs. The Chamber very much wants to be a part of that process. To our visitors, we say “Enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds you on our peninsula, sample the delicious food and vibrant stores in our historic waterfront. We hope you enjoy it here as much as we do, and return in future years when things return to “normal”.

Thank you.

Boothbay Harbor has long been considered by mariners to be the finest deep-water port north of Boston and has come to be known as “The Boating Capital of New England.” As a mid-Maine stopping point on the passage between Casco Bay to the southwest and Penobscot Bay to the northeast, its beauty and quiet ambiance have no equal.

Boothbay Harbor is bound by the Sheepscot and Damariscotta rivers. Tucked in and around the harbor are low-lying islands, promontories off the mainland, and pockets of water such as Linekin Bay, Townsend Gut, Mill Cove, and many other gunkholes that invite exploration. The harbor’s V-shape creates idyllic, flat waters for sailing, cruising, and kayaking with an afternoon sea breeze that typically arrives around midday.

The waters off the coast of Maine are teeming with wildlife, and the Midcoast region is no exception. Hop on one of our excursion boats for a chance to see whales, puffins, seals, ospreys, and other local wildlife.

For visiting boaters, the Boothbay Harbor region offers several marinas and yacht clubs with an abundance of boating services, including moorings, provisions, fuel, and repairs.

ON THE WATER

The Midcoast region is full of islands, beaches, coves, estuaries, and miles of coastline perfect for exploring by kayak. Glide over a shipwreck or enjoy a guided tour of the local wildlife and the harbor, or let the wind die down and enjoy the rich vibrant colors of a

New England sunset. If peaceful and simple is for you, then renting a kayak or standup paddleboard is the perfect option. Kayaks and paddleboards are the perfect way to see our region by water. They’re inexpensive, fun for the whole family, and allow you to navigate areas unavailable to a larger boat.

BOAT BUILDING

WHALE WATCHING & PUFFIN SIGHTINGS

The boat building industry is at the heart of the Boothbay region, with commercial and recreational boatbuilding thriving throughout our peninsula and islands for nearly 300 years. The region built wooden naval vessels — minesweepers, salvage tugboats, and aircraft rescue boats — for World War I and II and the Korean War.

The area is home to the nation’s oldest boat builder, Hodgdon Yachts, which began building clipper ships in 1816. Today the company has grown into one of the industry’s most cutting-edge builders, using composite materials from the aerospace industry to create truly world-class yachts.

Hodgdon Yachts certainly isn’t the only boat builder in the area. The storied history of boat building in the Boothbay region continues today with local shipyards building custom luxury yachts, tugboats, day sailors, and modern lobster boats, as well as refitting schooners for use locally and around the world.

Experienced captains and the latest tracking equipment almost guarantee you’ll get to see a whale when you come to the coast of Maine! There are also plenty of excursion boats offering puffin cruises to see first-hand the National Audubon Society’s success in re-establishing a puffin colony on famous Egg Rock. Along the way you may also get lucky and spot great blue heron, osprey, and other wildlife.

SPORT FISHING

Are you a sport fishing fan? Well, you have come to the right place! The Midcoast waters are rife with a variety of fish, making for a truly memorable fishing experience. Charter one of the many sport fishing boats for a chance to catch mackerel, tuna, striper, or even shark. The captains of these charter boats have years of experience fishing the Boothbay waters, so they know the perfect place for landing that legendary fish. Boothbay Harbor’s ample fleet of party and charter boats offers a variety of trips at a wide range of prices and is pure enjoyment and fun for all ages.

SAILING

Tour the rocky coastline aboard one of the many stunning and historic schooners or sailboat charters available in the region. Experience first-hand how this captivating means of transportation operates; you may even be lucky enough to assist the captain in hoisting the sails and manning the wheel! Many sailing trips come with complimentary blankets and are BYOB. There are plenty of sailing options in the area offering exhilarating day tours and relaxing sunset tours.

For those who sail for sport or just want to learn the art of sailing, there is also a wide variety of junior and adult sailing and racing opportunities at the local yacht clubs from June through September.

LIGH

THO

USES

There are few things more quintessentially Maine than lighthouses. Their illuminated

towers were originally erected to signal the mouth of a harbor — they were a much-

needed beacon for storm-tossed sailors. Today these lighthouses have become icons

of coastal Maine, and visitors travel from all over the world to see them.

Boaters can take a self-guided lighthouse tour to view the region’s five lighthouses.

In addition to Burnt Island, there’s Monhegan Island Light, The Cuckolds Light,

Hendricks Head Light, and Ram Island Light. While the last three are not open to

the public, these coastal sentinels are a wonder to behold up close from the water.

Venture over to Pemaquid Point in the Damariscotta region and climb the winding

stairwell to the top of the historic Pemaquid Point Lighthouse.

The Boothbay Region Land Trust loves dogs. That is why they have over 30 miles of amazing pet-friendly hiking trails throughout their numerous preserves.

– The Gregory River Trail is a beautiful walk along the banks of the Back River, where your dog can jump in for a refreshing swim.

– The Linekin Preserve & Burley Loop offer multiple trails each set in pristine forests in East Boothbay.

– The Ovens Mouth Preserve is one of the longer trails in the preserve. This five-mile hike offers plenty of spots for Fido to cool off after frolicking through the woods.

– Penny Lake Preserve, near downtown Boothbay Harbor, is great for your dog to make a new four-legged friend while on vacation. The preserve is a large open field that is popular all year long.

The options don’t end there! On the east side of Boothbay Harbor, Barrett Park on Lobster Cove Road is a great little park filled with lush trees and shade, perfect for picnics, kids, and, of course, dogs. In Bath, check out the South End Dog Park, at the corner of Washington and Lamont Streets. LOBSTER, LOBSTER, LOBSTER

LOB

STER

As a pillar of Maine’s commercial lobster fishing industry dating back to the 1800s, the Midcoast region naturally has countless opportunities for you to enjoy this delicious crustacean. Restaurants range from long-standing family owned eateries to brand new establishments run by award-winning chefs.

Whether you are looking for a classic Maine lobster roll or something a little fancier, Boothbay Harbor, Wiscasset, and Damariscotta have just what you’re searching for.

For more information on how to eat a lobster see page 34.

HISTORY OF LOBSTER FISHING IN MAINE

The Maine lobster industry is one of the oldest continuously operated industries in the country, dating all the way back to the early 1600s. But it wasn’t until the 1700s with the invention of the lobster smack — a sailing vessel with a circu-lating seawater tank in the hold — that the lobster industry really took off. This allowed the lobster to be transported live to the Boston and New York mar-kets. The lobster industry in Maine has grown and changed significantly since its early years. Today lobstering makes up 80 percent of the state’s commercial fishing income.

OUR FOOTBRIDGELuther Maddocks (1845-1932), a resident of the Boothbay region for 32 years in 1901 and known for his “hustling ability” with his many enterprises, including pogy factories and sardine packing businesses, concocted the idea of building a footbridge to connect the east and west sides of Boothbay Harbor.

Maddocks developed the specifications for building the bridge. He also developed the contract for erecting the footbridge. When no contractor would undertake to build the footbridge he offered to build it himself.

Construction was completed on the footbridge by July of 1901. He actually built this footbridge in only 11 days. This bridge was 885 feet long and seven feet wide, with a 75 foot draw in the center. The construction included 22 piles driven into bedrock and over 32,000 feet of lumber. Luther Maddocks was a mover and shaker and gave us a phenomenal memorial, our fabulous footbridge, which not only connects east and west sides but binds us all here on this peninsula. He accomplished this amazing feat in mere days, at almost no cost to the town and at significant sacrifice of his time, talent, and treasure.

HOW TO EAT A LOBSTERTwist off the claws. Pull each claw down and away from the body to remove it at the base of each claw. Separate the claw from the knuckle. Use a cracker to break the claw and knuckle open. Remove the meat with fingers or fork.

Separate the tail from the body by bending it up and away from the body. Crack the tail open and using your fork or pick, remove the meat from the tail in one piece.

Remove the back shell from the body and legs. Pick out any pieces of white meat that you can find.

Pull off the legs. It is easy to simply suck the meat out of the legs.

ISLAND LIFE

From the charming swing bridge entry to the island, Southport feels very much like stepping into a bygone age. The bridge remains in excellent condition and is one of the best preserved movable bridges in Maine. Twin brothers, Dwight and Duane Lewis worked as bridge tenders for 45 years and became so synonymous with the area they were featured in the children’s book “The Littlest Tugboat” written by local author Sarah Sherman McGrail.

On your way over, stop and enjoy a cocktail at Robinson’s Wharf, a local institution established over 40 years ago. With plenty of outdoor seating you can listen to live music as you watch local Lobstermen bring in their daily haul!

The island is also home to Southport General Store which was established back in 1882 and is still going strong today. No trip to the island is complete without stopping off for essential supplies. They have an expansive beer & wine selection, serve delicious food and even have a gift store on site. They are the heartbeat at the center of the island which includes the 100 year old Southport Central School, Hendricks Hill Museum and the beautiful Hendricks Head Beach all nearby.

Southport Memorial Library is a fantastic, well stocked library which is home to several fascinating private collections and a number of books on local hero Rachael Carson, perhaps the finest nature writer of the twentieth century who spent many of her Summers on Southport in her little cottage by the sea.

Down on the shore of the harbor, children can learn the joys of sailing at Southport Yacht Club. The Club owns and maintains two buildings and dock facilities on Cozy Harbor Road. The Club has a long history of promoting boating on the Maine coast with an emphasis on sailing. You also can enjoy great seafood and burgers at Cozy’s Dockside conveniently situated next door while you enjoy one of the prettiest little harbors around.

If you are looking to stay on the island, The Newagen Inn is a traditional oceanfront inn with a long tradition of celebrations by the sea. While there, you may also bump into nearby Cape Newagen Alpaca Farm who offer treks on the beautiful, island woodland trail. Take the trip over the bridge and come and visit. You won’t be sorry you did!

FOOD & DINING

For more on dining options, see listings on pages 40, 42 and chart on pages 44-45.

The Midcoast region is a food-lovers delight with an abundance of delicious seafood, grass-fed beef, and locally

sourced oysters and mussels, as well as fresh vegetarian and vegan dishes.

BREWERIES, DISTILLERIES & WINE TASTINGSMaine’s brewery, distillery, and wine scenes are some of the fastest growing in the nation, and the Midcoast region has its fair share of amazing watering holes and

tasting rooms. So, whether you prefer a hoppy New England IPA, a blueberry infused spirit, or a robust red, there is sure to be a happy hour beverage you will love.

OYSTERSThe Damariscotta River has seen an ecological resurgence in the last three decades, and the pristine tidal waters are perfect for harvesting one of Maine’s delicacies, the oyster. The Damariscotta River winds between the Bristol and Boothbay peninsulas, about an hour north of Portland. Travelers

can experience Damariscotta oysters throughout the Boothbay region at local restaurants, or at the source. The industry has become such a highlight of the region that several oyster festivals are starting to pop up to accommodate the excitement of the Midcoast region becoming “the Napa Valley of Oysters!”

BOOTHBAY RAIL VILLAGE AND WISCASSET, WATERVILLE & FARMINGTON RAILWAYNowhere else in New England can you ride the rails behind a vintage steam locomotive as it passes through a recreated village of historic Maine buildings. The Boothbay Railway Village has a collection of 60 antique autos to view, as well as a wide variety of events where you can meet traditional artisans like basket weavers, blacksmiths, and barrel coopers. Stop by the WW&F Railway Museum in Wiscasset and enjoy 2.6 miles of restored railroad, on a rebuilt steam locomotive. Climb aboard and take a ride back in time as you explore shops and experience firsthand the nearly lost art of running and maintaining a steam-powered narrow-gauge railroad, a fun and historic adventure for all ages.

O PARKS & PRESERVES

The Midcoast region is full of sweeping meadows, lush forests, saltwater estuaries, and lakes and ponds perfect for fishing or swimming — it is no wonder the conser-vationist Rachel Carson found this region so special. You’ll also find an abundance of public spaces, playgrounds, and beaches for you and your family to enjoy.

COASTAL MAINE BOTANICAL GARDENSThe Botanical Gardens is truly one of the area’s special gems and the perfect place to relax in nature. You’ll find cultivated gardens, woodland walks, and shoreland trails on nearly 300 acres of gorgeous woodlands.

RACHEL CARSONDid you know conservationist Rachel Carson’s passion for nature was inspired by time spent at her summer cottage in Southport? Carson spent many seasons exploring the Boothbay region’s rocky coast and dense forests. Today you can visit many of her favorite spots along the Rachel Carson Coastal Greenway.

BOOTHBAY REGIONAL LAND TRUSTThe land trust provides free public access to hundreds of acres of pristine coast-line, islands, river corridors, freshwater wetlands, fields, forested uplands, quiet coves, and even an old saltwater farm. Bring your comfortable walking shoes because the land trust oversees over 26 land preserves, with over 30 miles of hiking trails that are open year-round. There are also 175 free, family friendly programs each year that include guided hikes, workshops, and even kayak and boating excursions. Maps and guides are available at the Chamber.

CAMPINGAround the region, a day of camping will almost always be filled with sunlight filtering through the trees, the smell of the sea, and the distant sounds of the lapping tide. The region’s campsites are secluded enough to enjoy a peaceful

night under the stars, but close enough that you can easily cruise into town for some shopping or a delicious meal. Many of the campsites offer shuttle services, groceries, and bike rentals, making your stay even more comfortable.

DESTINATION WEDDINGS

Imagine your wedding set against one of the most coveted seaside backdrops in the world —lighthouses, historic sailing vessels, quaint villages, and steepled churches. Perhaps you dream of saying your vows at the crest of a vast lawn sweep-ing to the sea or surrounded by countless flowers blooming in a rainbow of colors. Maybe you seek the reverential hush of a small stone church or the unique adven-ture of a wedding by the sea. You can even charter a boat to celebrate your special moment.

Whatever you seek, the Midcoast region can help make your dream wedding come true. The area’s local vendors and artisans are incredibly talented and dedicated to ensuring your special day is perfect.

BOOTHBAY HARBOR REGION SCULPTURE TRAILA great way to get outside and enjoy Boothbay Harbor is by walking along the new sculpture trail. The sculpture trail opened in June of 2018 and features over 18 beautiful and intricate sculptures made by artists from all across New England. The trail can be enjoyed on foot taking roughly an hour and a half to complete, or you can enjoy seeing the sculptures from the comfort of your car. Every sculpture is truly remarkable so don’t miss seeing a single one. Sculpture trail maps are available at boothbayharbor.com and the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce.

ARTS & CULTURE

The Midcoast region is unquestionably home to one of the best artist communities in Maine. Artists use many natural materials found locally such as driftwood, sea glass, and granite for their artwork and sculptures. Art spills over to the public square at shows like the Harbor Arts & Crafts Fair, held weekly on the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library lawn, featuring handmade items sold by local crafters.

ART SCHOOL ROOTSA great way to get outside and enjoy The Boothbay Harbor region’s history is deeply connected with artistic culture. From 1906 to around 1930, Boothbay Harbor was home to the Commonwealth School of Art and Industry. The school, founded by Asa G. Randall, offered courses in several art disciplines including fine and applied art and music. The student body was incredibly diverse, with people coming from all over and ranging in age from 18 to 40 — many students even had their families in tow. It was not uncommon for there to be 200 students at the school throughout the summer months when the courses were in session. Today the creativity and exuberance sparked during those summer months in the first part of the 1900s are still very much alive. The Midcoast region is brimming with art galleries and it’s not uncommon to see artists out taking in the scenery and putting it to canvas.
