As Jesus’ courageous

disciples, living God’s

grace, we strive to:

◼ Worship faithfully

◼ Welcome openly

◼ Grow spiritually

◼ Care passionately

◼ Serve generously

October 1, 2019

Faith is by nature a risk, it involves

taking us into new and uncharted

territory. Faith is also trusting that

God really is who scripture says

God is—active, alive and at work in

our world. But how does this get

practically lived out?

Recently in our programming

with our confirmation and church

interns we have been trying a new

way to help our young people

think about faith. We show them

a series of pictures from our

church life. Blankets. A child at

baptism. Peaches. College packs.

The pictures seem quite ordinary

really—just blankets, just a normal

kid, just a box of peaches, just a

package being mailed to a college

kid. It all seems so ordinary.

Then I ask them to put on some

funny sunglasses. One of the glasses

has big $ signs on them. Another

one has big music notes on them.

Then we ask, what would the world

look like if we looked at it only

through those glasses? We would

see the same thing, but we would

see it through money or music.

Then we ask the kids to put on

some colored sunglasses and look

at the same pictures. Again, the

pictures are the same things, just

tinted differently. Lastly, we ask

our kids to use a marker to put a

cross on the lens of the sunglasses

and take a final look at the those

pictures.

When we use our faith to look

through those pictures suddenly,

something changes. They are the

same pictures, but when we look

at them through the eyes of our

Christian faith those blankets have

become a vehicle of God’s

comfort when they are given to

the Simpson Shelter. A child

received by baptism, through the

eyes of faith, becomes a member

of God’s family. Peaches, through

the eyes of faith, become a way

to support our youth mission

programs. College Packs, through

the eyes of faith, become a way

of reminding our college students

who have left us that God still

cares and loves them. Through

the eyes of the faith, we see God

at work in our world today.

So where, through the eyes of

faith, do you see God at work

in the world today? Where,

through the eyes of faith, can you

see God working in your family

and relationships with others?

Where, through the eyes of faith,

can you see God working in

miraculous ways to bless and

heal, love and welcome, forgive

and renew?

Through the Eyes

of Faith Lately I have been thinking

about the word ‘faith’ and what

that means to us today. In our

recent 5 part worship series:

Tools for Living the Gospel

Today we spoke about faith as

both risking and trusting.

student raised in the city and then

attending a private prep school far

from home, where he encounters

racism and discrimination not

unlike that experienced in his own

community. Pipe Line is a searing

story of a mother trying to protect

hopefully deepen your connection to important biblical passages.

presentation by Amy-Jill Levine followed by discussion. Dr. Levine is an excellent presenter. Come for an

interesting conversation.

flow from the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Come to discuss these verses that stand as a vision for living in the Spirit.

October 27: Planning a Good Funeral, Chris Myers—Pastor Chris will lead a discussion about planning a good

funeral, including a focus on: the distinguishing between a funeral, memorial service, and celebration of life;

writing an obituary; recognizing grief and how to help those who will mourn; and leaving a legacy.

Update On Heidy and Her Children As you all know, our asylum family

moved to Connecticut on August 31st

and returned on September 12th. Heidy

suffered a deception that made her make

the difficult but correct decision to return

to River Falls where she knew she would

be welcomed. She is distraught and

embarrassed; yet, within 24 hours of

setting her feet on Wisconsin soil, she

had a job with full benefits, and Alison,

the seventh grader, had re-enrolled herself

in school. The family is staying with

friends until she finds an apartment.

Often something like this makes one

show a certain extra wisdom and strength.

Heidy has shown that she is that brave

and determined woman we first met when

she arrived here needing to be rescued.

But this time she wants no financial help.

And she has surely proved herself again

as she did during the years she has been

in River Falls adapting to a new world,

new culture, and language. We will be

here for her as we would be for any dear

and respected friend. Thank you once

again for your support and prayers.

Baby Sitting Resource List I am looking to create a Babysitting Resource List for our Parents

of Young Families Ministry called Time Out. The list would be

available in the church office for parents to pick up. What I am

looking for is to put your son or daughter's name, phone number,

school they attend and any extra-curriculars they are involved in so

that parents can connect with them if they need a babysitter. Rate

setting will be negotiated between you, your son or daughter and the

family they would be working for. Please contact me through email

or at church if I can include your son or daughter on our list! This

is a GREAT way to help serve our young families and give our

kids babysitting experience! Thank you! - JaNae Westrich

First Communion Information for Parents

When do children at First Congregational Church begin taking Communion?

There is no uniform age at First Congregational Church when children begin participating in the Lord’s Supper.

Some children are pre-school age, others are in elementary school, and some wait until confirmation to begin taking

Communion. The Bible and church history do not give decisive guidelines about the age to begin celebrating the

Lord’s Supper. The decision about when people are welcome at the Lord’s Table has largely been made by local

worshipping communities. Our practice is to include children when they and their parents think they are ready to

participate.

How will I know when my child is ready?

Some parents choose infant communion for their children. Many parents wait until their children express an

interest. Typically children are ready to participate in Communion when they start asking questions about this

sacrament. One important theme of Communion is inclusion: All are welcome at the table of the Lord. If a child

feels excluded, it is a good time for that child to begin participating.

My child does not yet receive Communion. Should she/he still come forward?

Yes, all people are invited to come forward to the servers at the Communion distribution time. Children who will

not be communing should keep their hands folded (as opposed to reaching out). This is a signal to the pastor and

deacons that the child desires a blessing.

Peach Thank You

Thank you all for generous support of the Peach fundraiser! We had an awesome year contributing $2,152 to

the youth fund. Thank you to the Prochnows for taking the orders and being at the pick up table when the order

came in. Thanks also to the many helpers at the pick up area. One more thank you goes out to the super peach

unloaders/sorters. This efficient

group of people dropped

everything an hour earlier than

predicted and drove to the church

to unloaded and sort 475 boxes

in less than a hour to allow the

quick turnaround time for

peach pick up.

The biggest thank you goes out

to all who ordered the boxes of

peaches! Your support toward

the youth fundraiser is more

than generous. I hope you

enjoyed your peaches as much as I did. Delicious!

We are planning on the peach fundraiser again next

year. You will be hearing from us the end of June or

first of July 2020.

On behalf of the peach committee, thank you again and

God Bless, Deb Hoffman

Neighbors in Need Offering Neighbors in Need is the annual offering of the United Church of Christ

that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United

States. Two-thirds of the offering supports a wide array of rural, urban,

and national programs serving a wide range of communities in need, in

association with Justice and Witness Ministries. A third of the offering

supports the UCC Council for American Indian Ministries (CAIM) that

serves 20 indigenous churches associated with the UCC, particularly in

the Midwest and Plains states, including Wisconsin. Envelopes are in the

pews; we will receive Neighbors in Need gifts throughout the month of

September. Many thanks for your support of this vital national ministry

of our congregation and the United Church of Christ!

Dorian Relief We join congregations across the nation in supporting the United Church

of Christ Disaster Ministries as it moves to provide relief and recovery

with people of the Bahamas in the coming days, in partnership with other

national religious communities. This ministry of the denomination is

highly effective and puts important support on the ground with those

directly impacted by the hurricane. Please make checks to First

Congregational Church & mark them “Dorian Relief.” We will forward

all our gifts for use by Disaster Ministries as quickly as possible.

Health Care Directives Support Identifying and articulating your desires regarding personal health care

wishes to be followed by other people in the event you are not able to

make decisions for yourself is a wise thing to do as well as a gift for your

loved ones. A folder with all needed materials is available in the church

office. Linn Lawrence, member of the congregation and registered nurse,

is willing to help people and families navigate the materials as they make

these plans. For information, please call the church office or speak to

one of the pastors.

Sustainable Living: Tip of the Month If you are lucky enough (or unlucky enough, depending on the day) to

work in an office setting, there are a few things that you can do to make

your time at work more sustainable. Turning off your computer, lights,

and other desktop electronics every night can save a lot of energy. Also,

before printing a document, ask yourself if you really need a paper copy.

Recycle paper documents whenever possible. Lastly, if you have the

space, a potted plant can really change the atmosphere of your work

area- it will produce some fresh air and bring a touch of nature into

your work life.
