From the desk of the editor...Where to start? From thebeginning I suppose… I havebeen in Alpha Zeta Omegafor seven years and neversaw myself remaining asactive as I am for this long.As I sit here, pondering whatto write about ‘from the deskof the editor,’ I can’t help but

reminisce about all of the amazing times I have hadwith my fellow fraters. When first joining AZO, it was new and exciting. Allof these people around me were instantly my broth-ers. The “new kid high” eventually wore off, and Ifound myself wondering how I would simply passthe time with AZO. With some poking and proddingfrom fellow pledge brothers (who shall remain name-less), I took my first position as Bellarum and neverlooked back. A few positions (and pledge master)later, I found myself graduating alongside my pledgebrothers and other fellow fraters; a day that neverseemed to come soon enough. Now this is where the story takes an interesting turn. For most people looking in, a fraternity is somethingyou join to have fun during college and that’s where itends. In AZO, your fraternity life is young and barelyblossoming when you are graduating. As an alumnus, the true advantages of being a frater begin to elucidatethemselves. I can confidently say I would not be whereI am, were it not for my experiences with AZO. Whileknowledge can be attained in the classroom and befurther amplified by studying (with fraters at times),there are so many other aspects of professional lifethat can never be learned in these settings. It wasthrough the help of our alumni (reviewing my CV, tipson interviewing, where to look for jobs, how to carryyourself, etc.) that I was able to land my dream job andcontinue my professional career. I urge undergraduates to take advantage of the vastnetwork of alumni at your disposal. Among all of us,just about every field of pharmacy is covered. Ourmentorship chair did an amazing job at our regionalconvention to show the undergraduates what isavailable out in the ‘real world’. Events like this arewhat make AZO a unique organization that fostersgrowth in its members’ futures. As an undergradu-ate, I was fortunate enough to speak to many AZOalumni and hear about jobs in the pharmaceutical

industry, pharmacy law, regulatory positions, etc. and I urge others to do the same. To the graduating fraters, I congratulate you onachieving an important landmark in your lives.I implore you to consider remaining activewith Supreme and imbuing your knowledgeon those that follow you. The fraternalism Ihave witnessed over the past few years is verypromising. It makes me proud to be part ofsuch an amazing organization. Our fraternityhas been expanding rapidly, but this growth isunsustainable without the efforts of alumniwho care about the direction of the fraternity.Whatever your passion, AZO has an outlet foryou. I would like to start showing my appreciationby thanking our Supreme Directorum,Stephen Imperato, for giving me the opportu-nity to be the 2012 AZOAN editor. Based onthe past AZOANs, it was no easy task for meto continue such a history of excellence. ToDiane Medeiros, thanks for all the advice andreplies to e-mails at all hours of the night. Toour publisher, Don, I can’t thank you enoughfor keeping me on track during this process. Abig thank you to Lois Seidenman, P.N.P., andJeanne-Marie Holly, P.N.P., for reviewing all ofthe articles and catching all of my spellingmistakes in this article. In addition, I wouldlike to welcome Rho (St. Louis) and ThetaGamma (Findlay) to our fraternity and wishthem the best of luck in the upcoming years. In closing, this experience is one I would notsoon forget. I hope to continue to help AZOand hope to see many undergraduates jointhe illustrious ranks of the Alpha Zeta OmegaAlumni in the near future.

Thinking back to 12 years ago when I joined AZO I could have only dreamed that one day I wouldbe worthy enough to lead this great fraternity. Now here I am closing out my term as SupremeDirectorum and it still feels like a dream. I would like to thank the Fraternity for bestowing this greathonor upon me and trusting in me to continue on the momentum the last few years have built up.Like many of my predecessors had warned me I did not know how much time and effort would gointo serving this position. The thousands of emails, hundreds of phone calls, newsletters, mailings, website updates, chapter visits all were time consuming but all were worth it as I am pleased toreport AZO had a phenomenal year on many fronts. I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge that none of this year’s accomplishments could have beenachieved without the diligent work of my supreme board and appointed chairs. While all performedtheir duties well, the efforts of Excheque Janajreh and Signare Medeiros were exemplary. Both tooktheir offices with great gusto and ensured that all chapters kept frequent communication withSupreme and that all requirements were met in a timely manner. I feel confident knowing the frater-nity will soon be in their capable hands. I must also give special thanks to AZO Direct Chair Pucciafor her assistance with our AZO Direct special project. Although we did not pull off the telethon wehad initially planned her efforts were well received by our Direct members and with her help ourchapter rosters have been compiled, sorted and updated to a level like never before which should

bode well for future administrations. Mentorship Chair George is to be commended for his advancement of the program and forhis well-run workshop highlighting the various career paths available to our undergraduates at the winter convention. My deepestappreciation goes out to my trusted personal advisory council of P.S.D.’s Anciano, Fine, Flacks, Kirschner, Krop, Pinto, Ortega andSeidenman. Sadly this year we lost a legend in Frater Robert Kirschner P.S.D. His knowledge of everything AZO was unparalleled.I am so thankful for having had the opportunity to have him advise me on multiple occasions and I can only hope that he wouldhave approved of where I have left off. Finally AZO would not be where it is today without the efforts of Lou and Gloria Flacks. The fraternity is eternally indebted for their dedication and tireless preparations of our biannual conventions. It was back in 2001 atour 81st National Convention in Aruba, with Lou at AZO’s helm, that my exposure to AZO Supreme inspired me to greater myrole within AZO. The bonds of friendship forged during that convention have kept me coming back to every single conventionsince then. That same year we honored P.S.D. Herman Langer as the Meritorious Award recipient who coincidentally we sadly alsosaid farewell to this year after 50 years of service to AZO. The attendance at conventions has had a noticeable increase through-out my years on the supreme level. I can without hesitation attribute this to Lou, Gloria and the rest of their convention commit-tee who continue to amaze us time after time. On behalf of the Fraternity we thank and love you for all you do. As does every leader I proposed lots of plans and goals for the year. Looking back I can confidently say that I am satisfied withwhat we have achieved this year. One of our biggest challenges was our finances. While we could not correct some of the outsideissues affecting us we made great strides in ensuring we met our goals with respect to budgets and expenses. Additionally theamount of scholarship available to our undergraduates continues to increase. As our Supreme Excheque will report later our con-ventions were self sufficient, our officers kept to their budgets, and more importantly we saw a noticeable jump in the number ofactive fraters paying dues this year. This fact is attributed to two very important reasons. Firstly our retention rates, especially of newgraduates, seem to be improving. This is a trend we need to continue to continue to actively monitor and support by all meansnecessary. While our undergraduate chapters continue to bring in new initiates, without an active alumni base AZO can’t remainviable. The second reason, one which I am most proud of, is AZO has entered a new era of expansion. I had the opportunity topreside over the reactivation of Rho chapter in St. Louis as well as initiate the founding class of Theta Gamma at Findlay. So far thesenew chapters have shown great activity and with time I see both doing great things. Our expansion will also continue this fall aswe have been given approval to establish a chapter at WNEU in Springfield. We continue to receive inquiries at other locations aswell so even more may be in our future. Another of my objectives was to increase our electronic capabilities. This year many of the fraternity’s key documents includingfinances, rosters and Directorum’s cup were centralized online and easily accessible to all who required them. The use of this newertechnology allowed instantaneous updating eliminating the need for multiple people to do the same work. We continued to makeimprovements on the website, but sadly we can only keep it fresh with your help. I encourage future administrations to continueon with our online enhancements, as it is clear the social networking has had a positive impact on the strengthening of our chap-ters at a local as well as a national level. The amount of activity at our chapters continues to astound me. We should all be veryproud of their accomplishments, which continue to advance AZO, and our profession. This year I have also had the opportunity tovisit many of our chapters including Tau, Sigma, Rho, Philadelphia Alumni, New York Alumni, Kappa, and Epsilon. Thank you to allfor the invitations to their events and wonderful hospitality. I only wish I could have been to more! The pages to follow will surely highlight the wonderful year we had. I could not be more pleased with the accomplishmentsachieved this year. The future of AZO looks as bright as ever and I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to be a partof it. I look forward to seeing everyone at our National Convention in Baltimore this July where we will once again renew the bondsof peace, friendship and brotherly love.

Fraternally,

Supreme National Fundraising ProjectLustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer

The Supreme National Charity for this fraternal year has been the Lustgarten Foundation whose mission isto advance the scientific and medical research related to the diagnosis, treatment, cure and prevention ofpancreatic cancer. Few charities operate like the Lustgarten Foundation in which 100% of every donationgoes directly to research. The recent death of a celebrity like Steve Jobs has certainly shined a spotlight onthis disease which has long been underfunded. While the survival rates of other types of cancers haveimproved in recent years, unfortunately the rates for pancreatic cancer have not.

Many in AZO have personally felt the devastation this disease brings. In 2009 our beloved Dr. Jeff Levy losthis own battle but not before inspiring us with his strength and hope that someday we will end this fight. Inmemory of Jeff and all those who have lost a lovedone I once again chose this wonderful charity. In midSeptember over 25 fraters, family and friends fromthe Epsilon and New York Alumni Chapters gatheredto participate in a Pancreatic Cancer research walk inSomerset, New Jersey many wearing buttons show-ing off Jeff’s big smile to honor his memory. Thisgroup earned the top donor rank for the event withover $5000 raised. The ladies of Tau, motivated by afrater’s sister currently battling the disease, con-tributed over $500 through their efforts during anannual greek week penny wars competition. The NuChapter encouraged its newest fraters to do theirpart and over a two week period they sold bakedgoods, candy, water bottles, bottle openers anddraw string bags with the proceeds benefiting theLustgarten Foundation. Kappa Chapter got its ovensgoing and held a successful bake sale this past fallbringing in over $400 for the charity. I would alsolike to acknowledge the Sigma and Theta GammaChapters for their donations made on AZO’s behalf.

I would like to thank all of the fraters and chaptersthat participated in events throughout the year tobenefit this noble charity. Through your hard workand generous donations of time and money, signif-icant contributions were made on behalf of AlphaZeta Omega. I encourage you all to continue to giveyour much needed support to this charity. For moreinformation on how you can get involved visitwww.Lustgarten.org.

National Auxiliary President ReportIt has been an honor to serve asAZO National AuxiliaryPresident for 2011-2012. As Isaid in my installation speechlast summer in Mystic,Connecticut, I never expectedto have this position again afterso many years. I led theAuxiliary before many of thepresent day fraters were born! This is an organization that hasbeen an important part of mylife for 50 plus years. I joined

the Epsilon Auxiliary as a young wife and mother, andmade lifelong friends. AZO has a special quality that ishard to explain. One has to experience it—as undergradswho pledge the fraternity, who attend local meetings andfunctions, and who attend Supreme meetings andConventions. The Auxiliary members have had similarexperiences. We joined our local chapters, became closeto our fellow members, attended conventions where wemet and kept close friendships with fraters and spousesthroughout the country. The Fraternity and Auxiliary trulybecame our extended family.

The saying goes that time flies when you are having fun! Thisfraternal year certainly exemplifies that. We had a wonderfulwinter meeting in Fort Myers/Sanibel. Since I am now a‘Floridian’, I am especially happy that the weather was beau-tiful. The National Auxiliary had a productive meeting. Wediscussed the proposed constitutional changes that will bevoted on at the summer convention in Baltimore. We alsomade a presentation to the two wonderful UndergraduateAward recipients, Katelyn and Taryn.

The Auxiliary mourns the untimely passing of P.S.D. FratersRobert Kirschner and Herman Langer. Carmen was anactive Auxiliary member and former Tablecloth Chair. Theywere also beloved Epsilon members and dear friends. Wewere also saddened by the death of former NationalAuxiliary member and officer, Mal Kreske. He was that raremale spouse of a frater that became an active Auxiliarymember and will be fondly remembered.

The National Auxiliary is participating in the Fraternity charity, the Lustgarten Foundation. We also have our own Sandra J.Williams Scholarship Fund, which is supported by the sale of‘tribute’ cards.

I am very proud that the Fraternity and Auxiliary leadership isall ‘EPSILON’ this year. I have known Stephen Imperato sincehis undergraduate days and it has been a pleasure to be insuch good company. I look forward to seeing everyone inBaltimore at what will be another great AZO Conventionwith the AZO family of friends.

As I walked through the halls of thefirst Alpha Zeta OmegaPharmaceutical FraternityConvention, I never thought that Iwould be where I am right now.Being the Supreme Sub-Directorumfor 2011-2012. Back then, I was justthinking, where am I, did I do theright thing. Is this what I wanted todo in my life? Without hesitation, Itook my wife’s hand and I said, let’s

do it. Let’s see what AZO is all about and let’s see what wecan do for AZO. We both took a step forward and inthrough the doors of our first convention and never lookedback. Fast forwarding to the present time; it has been anhonor serving as your Supreme Sub-Directorum. Theduties of this office have opened my eyes to the world ofAZO. I highly recommend it for everyone to try it and bepart of the Board. You’ll never look back again. I would like to thank our Supreme Directorum, StephenImperato, for his fine leadership this year. I tip my hat toour Supreme Signare, Diane Medeiros, for her undyingwork ethics. I applaud our Supreme Excheque, IzzatJanajreh, for his commendable work. I would like to give astanding ovation to the rest of the Board members for theirexcellent work. The January convention in Sanibel, Florida will be forever inour memories of warmhearted times and loving get togeth-ers. Looking back at each of the previous Conventions; eachhad a personal story to tell; each Convention had unforget-table events to remember. Our lives have changed foreverbecause of these Conventions. Hopefully we can havemany more conventions in which to come. I believe we willhave more conventions because we have Gloria and Louand a bright, young colleague like Brian Pinto. Kudos toBrian for his tenacity and perseverance. It will be great to see the familiar faces and not so familiarfaces at our next Convention in Baltimore, Maryland. If youare thinking of coming, that’s a good step in the rightdirection for a wonderful life in AZO. Hope all can come toenjoy what Baltimore and AZO has to offer. Let’s make thisConvention another unforgettable event. Go AZO!

Supreme Sub-Directorum Report Supreme Excheque ReportFirst and foremost, I would like tothank the fraternity for electing meas Excheque and giving me theopportunity to serve you this pastyear. Over the course of this fraternalyear, we reached greater totals ofboth active undergraduates andactive fraters than we have seen inover ten years. Through the hardwork and diligence of many fraters,we were able to initiate two new

chapters, saw increasing activity and productivity from mostof our undergraduate chapters, and see more entities con-tend for a Directorum’s Cup than in recent memory. Our success as a whole is due in large part to the work ofour chapter excheques. I would like to thank them for sub-mitting their financial reports, IRS filings, and monies in atimely fashion. I would also like to thank Tiffany Puccia, AZODirect Chair. Through her work, AZO Direct was not onlycompletely computerized, but we also see a 33% increase inactivity from just one year ago. In what, at times, was certainly a hectic year as Excheque, Ihave to thank both our current Directorum, StephenImperato, and our past Directorum, Leonardo Ortega, formaking such a daunting position manageable. Without theirtutelage, I would not have been able to complete my termas Excheque in such a productive and seamless fashion. Iwould also like to thank Lou and Gloria Flacks for certainlygiving me the guidance necessary to help me with my role. I would like to congratulate our entire E-Board for a verysuccessful fraternal year and am looking forward to seeingwhat the future holds for us. I am very much excited to seeeveryone in Baltimore!

This past year has been a wonderfulyear jam packed with lots of peace, friendship and brotherly love acrossthe country. At the last convention,in lovely Sanibel/Fort Myers Floridathere was a great undergraduateturnout. It was wonderful to meet somany new Fraters, and make newlife-long connections. Over the past few years, the under-graduates have cloned the term

‘mini-convention’. It is clear that seeing everybody only twicea year is not enough, thus the birth of these ‘mini-conven-tions’. I was fortunate enough to participate in many inter-chapter events throughout this fraternal year. In October, Imade it out to the Epsilon chapter for their homecoming fes-tivities. Not even a month later some Epsilon Fraters weregracious enough to come up to Boston for a night to cele-brate my birthday. During February the Tau chapter, with Kappa, Nu, Epsilon andTau Fraters in attendance, hosted a great ‘mini-convention’.Sigma’s Bowl-A-Thon was the ‘mini-convention’ of Marchand also the installation of the Theta Gamma chapter. It wasa wonderful time with Fraters from many chapters. Themonth of April has a lot to offer as well, with both ‘Nu-Palooza’ and Epsilon’s formal. Although some Kappa Fratersmade it up to Boston, I was not fortunate enough to be ableto visit the Kappa chapter this year. I am ecstatic that we arein Baltimore for this convention so they can be my tourguides this time!As always, the undergraduates are in constant contact witheach other. It is wonderful to be able to get advice from dif-ferent chapters on philanthropic events, fundraising, commu-nity service and many other things- in addition to just shoot-ing the breeze. If you cannot tell from the above, it has beena wonderful year as Undergraduate Representative. Thankyou to Lou and Gloria Flacks and the convention steeringcommittee for planning yet another wonderful convention! Iam very excited for this convention here in Baltimore!

When Stephen Imperatoapproached me in the sunshine inOlde Mystic Village at last summer’sconvention I was honored. As anundergraduate I was fortunate to beheavily involved with Sigma’s recentgrowth by serving as Pledge Masterand holding several committeechairs. Sigma has seen an increase inparticipation and dedication at boththe undergraduate and Supreme

levels over the last few years, and I was excited to continueto represent my chapter. This year our fraternity saw more growth with the additionof the Theta Gamma chapter at the University of FindlayCollege of Pharmacy. I was happy to participate in theinduction ceremony held over Sigma’s annual Bowl-a-Thon weekend in Toledo. We inducted 18 new Fraters thatweekend as Sigma played host to many visiting chapters, including Psi, Nu, Epsilon, and Tau, both Alumni andUndergraduates. Sigma and Theta Gamma will both great-ly benefit from our close proximity, and hopefully soon ourbrotherly love will rivial that seen with our chapters on theeast coast.Thank you again for this opportunity to serve this greatFraternity!

The year began with a successfulMentorship Workshop where severalalumni shared their experienceswithin various Pharmacy fields, andproviding information on eachfrater’s career path. The followingareas of Pharmacy were covered atthe workshop: Retail, Independent,Mail Order, Hospital, Home Infusion,Corporate Management, MedicalWriting, Regulatory Affairs, Patent

law, and Pharmacy fellowships. The workshop included par-ticipation from almost 25 graduates and undergraduates, andprovided insight on both traditional and nontraditional careeroptions within Pharmacy. It is obvious how well representedAZO is across the many fields, and why this fraternity is sosuccessful. As newer graduates continue to gain experience, I am hop-ing to also build our Mentorship network, so that we can allcontinue to support each other as new job opportunitiesand career decisions present themselves. For those of youwho would like to include your name within the mentorshipdatabase, or are interested in obtaining more informationon a specific field, please contact me.It has been a pleasure to be appointed to this position byour Supreme Directorum, Stephen Imperato, and I hope tosee many of you in Baltimore this summer.

Mentor Committee ReportIt feels like it was just yesterday thatwe were enjoying ourselves inMystic, Connecticut… how timeflies! I joined the fraternity late inmy 4th year and I did not have asmuch exposure as I would haveliked to the day-to-day workings ofthe fraternity. Little did I know thatI would be doing a whole lot oflearning in a few years. Thankgoodness for very organized pred-

ecessors. Trying to summarize this past year has proven tobe quite challenging. If I were to sum it up in one word, itwould be communication. I am pleased to report that theundergraduate and alumni chapters have been keepingbusy doing all things AZO; be it social events or profes-sional events. In reading the minutes that each chaptersubmitted, I found it interesting that we could all be AZOand yet, so diverse with how and what we do to promoteourselves and the profession of pharmacy. I would like tothank the officers of each chapter for tolerating the flood ofemails I would send and for their prompt reply. I look for-ward to continuing that tradition this upcoming year. I would like to thank Directorum Imperato for his guidanceas well as the rest of the Supreme officers for a wonderfulyear. I look forward to seeing everyone at convention inBaltimore this July.

The AZO Direct office has beenbusy once again this year. Webegan our year working withChapter Directorums to updatetheir chapter rosters to ensure thatall contact information for Fraters iscorrect. A mass mailing was thensent out asking past AZO Directmembers as well as our inactiveFraters to join AZO Direct, whichresulted in 40 active members for

the fraternal year. During our winter regional convention a special actionscommittee was created to discuss the future of AZODirect. Wanting to give our members a louder voice, it wasproposed to the Supreme board that the AZO Constitutionand by-laws be amended to allow all active Fraters theright to hold elected or appointed positions on theSupreme level; including AZO Direct members.Furthermore, we had a goal of producing an easier way tocommunicate amongst AZO Direct members, and there-fore with the hard work from our Director of ElectronicCommunications, we developed AZOdirect.com, whichallows members to post updates, photos, and messages. One of the greatest pleasures for me this past year hasbeen the opportunity to interact with our AZO Directmembers. I have enjoyed speaking with many of theFraters and working with them to improve communica-tions between each other. I am proud of the advancementswe have been able to make this past year, and it is myhope that AZO Direct continues to be a place for ourFraters who have moved away or lost their chapter of ori-gin to come together and feel that peace, friendship andbrotherly love. It has been an honor to serve as AZO Direct Chairperson. Iwant to thank all of the Fraters who helped accomplish ourgoals, and I want to thank the AZO Direct members forworking with me. Special thanks to Supreme DirectorumStephen Imperato for appointing me to this position.Congratulations to the Supreme Board for another success-ful year. AZO Direct ReportSupreme Deputy ReportIt has been an honor for me to serveAZO as Supreme Deputy underSupreme Directorum Imperato.2011-2012 has been an extremelyactive year for AZO. We Chartereda new chapter, revived a lost chap-ter and there are many more chap-ters in the pipeline. This is a tributeto our younger leaders. AZO islooking good moving into thefuture. Our founders would be

proud of today's leadership. One thing I would like to stress is the need for more com-munication between Supreme and our SubordinateChapters and members. We need a more ‘real time’ website, updated on an much more regular basis. We needmore emails to our local members and we still need ‘hardcopy’ communication between Supreme Officers and ourmembers. The Apothecary is great. I am sure that this, like previous,Azoans will be wonderful. But more would be better. Thisis one of the things that P.S.D. Bob Kirschner and I couldagree on. I hope that future officers take this to heart andopen a flood of communication from the top down. Thisworks both ways. We also need more communication fromour chapters, and members, going to Supreme.Let’s move into the future with an active interchange ofinformation between all Fraters.

Fellow Fraters. This fraternal year, the position ofDirector of Development has beenvery active and exciting. In the fallsemester, the Supreme chapter wassuccessful in reactivating the RhoChapter at the St. Louis College ofPharmacy with the help of a verypromising group of students oncampus. We anticipate a high level

of participation and success from them in the upcomingyears! In the spring semester, the Supreme chapter, with theassistance of the Sigma chapter, was successful in estab-lishing the newly chartered Theta Gamma chapter at theUniversity of Findlay in Ohio. I suspect that the Sigmachapter will serve as a mentoring chapter to Theta Gamma, and thus stewarding them in becoming yet another suc-cessful chapter for AZO!As if that was not enough, Supreme has its eyes set onanother site for a new chapter, the Western New EnglandCollege of Pharmacy. This newly accredited pharmacyschool has demonstrated its genuine intention of establish-ing an AZO chapter on its campus through communica-tions with our point person on this venture, SupremeAssociate Signare Lauren Young. We anticipate futurecommunications with the administration to discuss specif-ic details on how to promote AZO on campus in an effortto induct a founding class for this possible new chapter! I would like to thank Supreme Directorum StephenImperato for the appointment to this position. It has trulybeen a pleasure working with him and other dedicatedfraters on the various projects. AZO has taken huge stridesin development in the last couple of years with two brandnew chapters, a chapter reactivation and another promis-ing site looming on the horizon. Rather than resting on itslaurels, I strongly recommend that Supreme continue itsfocus on developing new chapters not just for the sake ofexpansion, but also to ensure the great legacy of AlphaZeta Omega for generations to come!Congratulations to the new members of the Rho and ThetaGamma chapters!Welcome to our great AZO family!

I cannot believe that another fraternal year is coming to anend. I wish to thank all New York officers for a great jobwell-done, and to all those that chose a day to run ourmonthly meetings. I know it’s not easy to make thearrangements and follow through with the invites andmenu planning. Thank you all.New York Alumni this year had a truly remarkable yearstarting way back in August through July at this yearsBaltimore convention. At the time of this writing we arestill making plans for our June meeting at the CulinaryInstitute, a chef’s school that is open to the public, wheremeals are cooked by future famous chefs. Our meetingsthis year were well attended and were held all over theNew York/New Jersey area. New York Alumni’s charity is ‘Scouting for Food’ a Boy Scoutoperation that gathers food for the hungry. Our local foodbank organization is the ‘Hands of Hope’ in Edison NewJersey. At each of our meetings, fraters are asked to bring inany non-perishable food items. Most bring in canned goods. This year we outdid ourselves by sending multiple cases offood which were turned over and redistributed to the localneedy. This year New York is as happy as can be that our ownFrater John Chin will be installed in Baltimore, as the nextSupreme Directorum. As a P.S.D., I sort of know what’s ontap for John. I am positive that John can and will do atremendous job at this high post and will represent NewYork with HONOR and INTEGRITY. Congratulations Johnfrom all of New York Alumni and special congratulationsand good luck from me, your old friend of some 38 years. On a personal note, I would like to thank each and everyone of you for your support and well wishes during my twohospital admissions back in March. All your support reallyhelped my recuperation back to good health. Thanks againto my extended AZO family.

To wrap up another year is hard but the prospects of start-ing the next fraternal year is now looming in the nearfuture, giving us hope for another year of Peace, Friendshipand Brotherly Love.

The Nu chapter of Alpha Zeta Omega has had a great yearfrom 2011-2012. Over the course of this year, we’ve induct-ed 20 new brothers under Pledge Master Amanda Aing, bringing us to a huge number of 59 active fraters. Throughoutthis entire year we were very active in a number of philan-thropic campaigns. We held a fundraiser competition inNovember that allowed us to donate $202 to the Hole in theWall Gang Camp, a summer camp for terminally ill childrenand $360 to the Lustgarten Pancreatic Cancer Foundation. Inaddition, we formed our own HuskyThon team. HuskyThonis a university-wide dance marathon for 18 hours at theUniversity of Connecticut all to raise money for theConnecticut Children’s Medical Center. Our team used anumber of inventive methods in order to raise money for thisthat included canning campaigns and selling waffles tostressed out students during finals in December. Nu chapter’steam raised $2256 and the entire event raised $304,000which completely eclipsed last year’s donation total. Duringthe fall semester, we also had four fraters represent AZO inour second Annual Pharmacy School Trivia Night for Charitywhere we placed in 2nd among all the organizations in ourpharmacy school. Nu chapter has been very busy on the professional andpatient care fields as well. Our professional chair, JenCrowley, has been in charge of setting up an amazing num-ber of senior center presentations for our chapter, as well asorganizing these presentations for members of the P3 phar-macy class with the help of the experiential education facul-ty. During the spring semester we co-hosted a “Rotation’sNight” with Phi Delta Chi where we invited back a number ofour P4 brothers in order to tell us about their rotations so far. This event ended up being a great success.Nu is closely associated with our Connecticut AlumniChapter. We’ve come together for a number of dinners overthe past months, keeping in touch with our alumni who havebecome great mentors to us all. We still have one more din-ner planned with them this year in which we are hopingSupreme Director Stephen Imperato will honor us with avisit. In addition to this, several of our brothers attended theNational AZO Winter Convention this year in Florida, and alsovisited Sigma chapter for their annual Bowl-A-Thon to onceagain further our goal of improving our relations with themany other chapters of AZO. During the Spring semesterwe’ve unfortunately had to cancel our annual gathering ofAZO at UConn called “Nupalooza” and delay it until the Fall.

Nu Chapter We are planning on hosting any brothers who wish to visit uson the weekend of April 13th-15th. One of the most exciting new prospects for us right now isthe possibility of a Pharmacy Greek Council in the School ofPharmacy for the three fraternities and one sorority associat-ed with it. We hope for this Greek council to become a greatresource for our fraternities to work together in our manyactivities. In the coming weeks we already have a large scav-enger hunt being planned for all the respective Greek organ-izations and we anticipate a great turnout from AZO. Nuchapter at UConn has had a successful and productive yearand we are looking forward to seeing everyone in Baltimorefor the Summer Convention!

Connecticut Alumni

Connecticut Alumni Chapter got off to a wonderful start thisfraternal year with a great dinner meeting that was held inSeptember at the Carmen Anthony Fishhouse Restaurant inWethersfield. Our plans for the fraternal year were met withgreat enthusiasm from the many fraters in attendance.October found us at one of our favorite times in the fraternalyear. Our PIZZA and POPS night featured a stop at the First& Light Tavern for some of their usually fantastic pizza offer-ings followed by a trip to the Bushnell for a performance ofthe Hartford Symphony Pops Orchestra featuring a concertby Ben Vereen which kept us all swinging for the rest of theevening. December’s dinner meeting found us at Angelo’sRestaurant in West Hartford. Not only did we partake of someof Angelo’s culinary delights, we also had the pleasure ofbeing entertained by Angelo himself who also happens to bea professional magician. Our never-ending desire for Italianfood brought us to Bertucci’s Restaurant in Newington for ourJanuary meeting. The Wampanoag Country Club in WestHartford was the venue for our April get-together. Our finalprogram in June again featured one of our favorite things, dinner and theater. This time the Hartford Symphony PopsOrchestra paid tribute to the music of Paul McCartney. All inall, it was a great year, made even more enjoyable by the fre-quent attendance of many of the Nu Chapter fraters at ourevents. They are the future of Connecticut Alumni.

Rho Chapter

Our first year as the re-established Rho Chapter has beenvery productive, yet has posed many challenges. We havenot been approved by St. Louis College of Pharmacy as anactive Fraternity this past year because we did not meet thenumber of members needed at the time. Next year we willbe an active Fraternity on St. Louis College of Pharmacy(STLCOP’s) campus with plenty of members. We had meet-ings twice a month since our activation in November. Sincewe are not active on campus yet, we have not been able tohave recruitment events that are connected with STLCOP,though we have managed to have several recruitmentevents off campus that have been successful. Besides thatlimitation we have managed to plan out a lot of importantbusiness items that will help next year run smoothly. Wehave made a projected budget, in the process of setting upour bank account, almost drafted a complete constitution, and prepared rush and pledge activities for next year. Wesent a group to convention in Fort Myers over winter breakand are currently planning on sending another group tosummer convention. I believe that the work we have donewill help lay the foundation for a very successful year as ourfirst on the St. Louis College of Pharmacy’s campus.

Tau Chapter

Over the past year, Tau has been very busy! We organizeda blood drive with the American Red Cross at our school.Earlier in the year the we visited the Astra Zeneca HopeLodge where we made the residents smoothies. Theyappreciated it so much, they gave us a round of applause. At the end of our first semester, we adopted a family oftwo through the Salvation Army and donated over$500.00 worth of clothes, toys and gift cards for the fami-ly during the holidays. This semester we made and donat-ed coloring books for The Children’s Hospital of Boston. With the help of the Inter Fraternity Council, Tau helpedraise awareness during World AIDS day by handing outinformational packets in the atrium at MCPHS. We heldvarious fundraisers throughout the year including sellingSigler’s Drug Cards to the third year pharmacy class duringSeptember and chocolate bars during February. In Marchwe held a flower bulb fundraiser to be in the spring spirit!Greek Week ended with Alpha Zeta Omega in third place, but on the bright side through the Greek Week penny warscompetition, the Tau fraters raised over $500.00 for TheLustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer. Even though we have been busy with community serviceand fundraising, Tau has made time for inter-chapterevents. Many Tau fraters visited the Epsilon chapter fortheir homecoming celebrations in October. DuringNovember, many Fraters from Epsilon came to Boston tovisit for a birthday celebration. February brought Kappa, Nuand Epsilon chapters to Boston for a fun-filled weekend! The furthest number of miles traveled came in March. TwoTau fraters travelled to Sigma’s annual Bowl-A-Thon for theTheta Gamma induction and an eventful ‘mini-convention’weekend of fun and bowling. We traveled to Nu chapterfor their ‘Nu-Palooza’ and visited Epsilon chapter for theirformal. During April, Tau held our annual Frater Dinnerwhere the results of the Tau chapter 2012-2013 E-Board

The end of February, Tau chapter inducted 19 new fraters! They are all ladies of outstanding character, fellowship andscholarship and I am very proud to call them fraters. It hasbeen a wonderful year, and although I am sad to see it endI would not trade all of the wonderful memories that weremade through out this year. Psi Chapter

Psi Chapter entered the 2011-2012 academic year with ourmain goal to strengthen and rebuild our fraternity inside andout, while continuing to carry on our deep rooted values ofpeace, friendship, and brotherly love. Our first event wasbowling, which comprised of over 50 current and prospec-tive members, and alumni. Next, we enjoyed dinner andlaughs at the Improv Comedy Club with headliner NormMacDonald from the legendary Saturday Night Live. Our fol-lowing event was a friendly, yet competitive, field day andBBQ on the beach – rushes vs. fraters. Part of our mission thisyear was to incorporate academics into our AZO chapter. Therefore, our last two rush events were information sessionson tips to get through pharmacy school, and how the AZOmembers work together to make this possible. The first eventwas an intimate one-on-one session to answer individuals’questions and concerns on what the next four years entailed. The second was a podium presentation, which fraters, FabiolaDabady, Genevieve Hale, Robert Richardson, and Yarkin Ulkapresented on studying, note-tasking, test preparation andtime management to prospective members. The subsequenthalf of the semester focused on pledging, community serviceand fundraising. We were proud to initiate 21 new fraters! Along with welcoming the new pledges, AZO fraters partic-ipated in several community service events. We teamed upwith the AHA, ALA, and APhA to spread awareness aboutheart disease, asthma, diabetes, and blood pressure. Weraised over $130 and participated in the Heart Walk in down-town West Palm Beach. Next, we split off to various elemen-tary schools in Palm Beach County to show children how toproperly use their inhalers, along with what to do during anasthmatic attack. We provided education about diabetes andblood pressure, and screenings to the local community atNSU. Lastly, we helped clean Juno Beach for the community. The 2011 AZO Winter convention in Fort Myers was a greatnetworking and learning experience for the Psi Chapter. Wewere especially honored to be able to share and hear phar-maceutically-related and life-related experiences, along withsuggestions on how to make our chapter grow nationally andlocally. After convention we were excited to welcome ourEpsilon brother, Harjeet Caberwal, to West Palm Beach. Ourdoors are always open to welcome any chapters or individ-ual frater from outside chapters that would like to visit the PsiChapter in sunny Florida. Psi chapter began the second semester volunteering withHabitat for Humanity where we built, painted, and created anew home for a less fortunate family. In addition, we partic-

ipated in the West Palm Beach Breast Cancer Walk. Also, weassisted in cleaning a local town road in the Adopt-A-Highway program. Our social events included a second fieldday, Mardi Gras Social, where we were happy to welcomeKyle Koenig from the Sigma Chapter, a second bowlingevent, and a night out at Duffy’s Sports Bar and Grill. Thebiggest event of the year was Greek Wars, where AZO com-peted against Kappa Psi and Phi Delta Chi fraternities in aday-long sports competition to see who is the best fraterni-ty, and keeper of the treasured Spartan Greek Wars trophy. This year we were the host of Greek Wars, and took first placein the competition! Our big fundraiser this semester was theValentine’s Day Bake Sale. They raised over $100 in this suc-cessful event. Our last event of the year was the End of theYear UTI Banquet. Here the transition of old and new officerstook place. I am very excited and proud to congratulateMorgan James who will be the 2012-2013 AZO Directorum.Morgan has done an outstanding job as AZO DirectorumElect. I have no doubt he will continue to make us proud asthe new leader of the fraternity. Pi Rho Chapter

This year has been full of many challenges for Pi Rho. Sinceour chapter’s establishment in 2010 here in Puerto Rico, wehave been moving forward to maintain our status as a recog-nized student organization in good standing on campus. Inthis effort, we have inducted 11 students who demonstratedgreat interest in joining AZO with a motivation to improveon the foundation that Pi Rho has built in the past couple ofyears. Our Directorum wants to thank all of the fraters whohelped the pledge committee make our official pledgingprocess a very real experience and congratulate the newmembers for their great effort during it.

Chapter’s activities during this past year 2011-2012:As a professional event, we organized a conference aboutpancreatic cancer. A short film was prepared by our pro-fessional chair, Raquel Nuñez, which included excerpts onthe causes and statistics of the disease, along with testimo-nials from people who have pancreatic cancer. In April, weorganized a conference for the entire school aboutParkinson’s disease in which a professional expert on thetopic provided important facts of the disease as well astestimonials. This year Pi Rho has also organized many social events. These events include a picnic at Fort El Morro,Thanksgiving’s dinner, Fuddruckers, and our Valentine’sDetox Party at the Hotel San Juan. We organized an inter-chapter activity with the Kappa chapter in which we had theopportunity to have dinner and share ideas for both of our

chapters. Our Social Chair, Natacha Linares, has organized aroad trip to “Gozalandia”, a wonderful river in San Sebastian, located on the west coast of Puerto Rico.Since last year we have been working hard for the commu-nity. In December we had the opportunity to participatewith the Medical School at Central University of Bayamon, with an initiative group called Urban Medicine, in whichMD students offer health care and counseling to men in arehabilitation program. We participated by counseling thepatients about their issues related to medications andclearing doubts about their therapy. During the month ofMarch, we participated in a raffle with other organizationsin the school to raise funds for a young couple whosedaughter had a rare bleeding condition at only threemonths of age. The funds raised enabled her parents oflow-income to travel to the Mayo Clinic to find moreanswers about their daughter’s condition and treatment. The bleeding problem of the newborn, Isabella Victoria, has been resolved, but follow-up visits to the Mayo Clinicare still required. On April 28th, we participated in aHealth Fare at our school in which Pi Rho members providedinformation about hypertension and emphasized theimportance of daily blood pressure monitoring and theadherence to the treatment.Last but not least, we have done some fundraising as well.In November, we had a hot dog and candy sale. InFebruary, our new fraters directed a fundraiser atFuddruckers and sold chocolates as part of their pledgingprocess. In addition, we organized a party called theValentine’s Detox Party at the Hotel San Juan to raise fundsfor convention. The students of our school have recognized our organization,AZO Pi Rho, as a solid fraternity. We hope to continue moti-vating students to become part of this unique life experience!

This past fraternal year has been filled with much success forthe Epsilon chapter. We have continued to breed our strongrelationship with Supreme as well as solidify our relationshipwith our undergraduate chapter. Throughout the year wehave met monthly for local meetings in the New Brunswickarea and held additional events throughout the year.Although our fraternal year started with a washout thanks toHurricane Irene no frater sustained any substantial damage totheir property or businesses. September brought about bet-ter weather and the chapter along with some friends fromNew York Alumni walked in the Lustgarten Pancreatic CancerWalk in memory of Frater Jeff Levy. Around 25 fraters andfriends attended the walk and stayed around afterwards for aBBQ put on by Fraters Lenny Ortega and John Anciano. InOctober we celebrated out annual Rutgers Homecomingwith about 85 fraters from far and wide dropping by the tail-gate at some point during the day to have some food, recount past memories and get ready for the Rutgers footballgame later in the day. For the holidays we had our Decembermeeting at the StageHouse restaurant in Somerset, NewJersey and made final preparations for the Winter Conventionin Sanibel Island, Florida. Epsilon was well-represented withover 65 fraters and guests attending the convention. The second half of the fraternal year was no less busy withseveral of our fraters taking trips out to visit other Epsilonfraters in the Chicago area before making our annual trip outto Ohio for the Sigma Bowl-a-Thon. Some of our fratershelped our Supreme Directorum install a new chapter at theUniversity of Findlay in Ohio and we had our usual contingentin Boston in late February. Epsilon held its Closing Affair atthe end of April with a great turnout of 85 people. We hon-ored Frater Stuart Keil with his 50 year pin and honoredFraters Mehul Patel (Ephraim G. Sless), Justin Kwiatek (SiSless), Shelly Pezzella (Epsilon Undergraduate ServiceAward) for their achievements with the chapter over the last

Epsilon Alumni few years. We recently just finished up our fraternal year witha joint meeting with the New York Alumni at a PortugueseRestaurant in the Ironbound section of Newark.I would be remiss if I did not mention the loss of the dearfrater, Robert Kirschner. His passing in March took us by sur-prise and we had several fraters present at the services tomourn with his family. He will be greatly missed. Let thismoment not overshadow the accomplishments that Epsilonhas attained this past year. We look forward to another strongyear and look forward to seeing everyone in Baltimore.

Peace, Friendship and Brotherly Love,

As the youngest of three daughters by 12years, she became an aunt at the age of 11 and now hastwo nieces and a nephew. Katelyn grew up in EastLongmeadow where she received her educationthrough the public school system. In high school, sheexcelled academically and demonstrated her leadershipthrough numerous extracurricular activities as presidentof the National Honor Society, editor of the yearbook, and flute section leader of the band during her senioryear. She was also a proud member of the volleyballteam and math team. With her love for math and science, Katelyn decided toattend the University of Connecticut, where she wasaccepted into the Honors Program as a Pre-Pharmacymajor. As a freshman, she joined the University ofConnecticut Marching Band as a member of the flute-line and pledged Alpha Zeta Omega with her bestfriend, Kelly Hughes. At that time, Nu Chapter wasvery small, but the fraters were especially close andprovided a great support network. Katelyn held herfirst position as Bellarum in spring 2008, after whichshe had the privilege of serving as Sub-Directorumduring her P1 year and Directorum during her P2 andP3 years. During her time as Directorum, Nu Chapterwent through a huge transformation, becoming moreactive with community service and nationally withinAZO and growing to an incredible size of 50 active

Taryn Nicole Merchant was born and raised in SouthernCalifornia. She attended Centennial high school whereshe was active in volleyball, soccer, and student coun-cil. She was enrolled in the International Baccalaureateprogram and was honored with President’s Honor Roll,National Honor Roll and featured in Who’s Who for fourconsecutive years. Her passion for science, along withthe honor of receiving the Bausch and Lomb/Universityof Rochester Science award, sparked her interest in themedical field. In 2003, she graduated high school as herclass Valedictorian.Taryn then went on to receive her B.S. in BiologicalScience from the University of California, Irvine. As anundergraduate, she joined the Pharmacy EmergencyResponse Team where she was trained to help withlarge-scale disaster relief. She also served as the VicePresident, Director of Philanthropy and recruitmentcounselor for Pi Beta Phi. Outside of school, she wasinvolved in Habitat for Humanity, Champions areReaders and tutoring at her local library. Ultimately, itwas her interest in a pharmacy career that brought herto the University of Maryland. At the University of Maryland Taryn found a secondhome in the Kappa chapter of Alpha Zeta Omega. Fromthe very first fraternity meeting, she wanted to beinvolved as much as possible and asked to take on thetask of creating a website. After a short time she wasinducted into the open position of editor, which instilledwithin her a desire to do more. In order to learn about

(Parsons continued) fraters. As a P4 student, Katelynhas remained active within Nu Chapter and is current-ly the Sidney R. Rome Newspaper Cup Chairman.Outside of AZO, Katelyn has been very active withother pharmacy organizations at UConn as a member ofthe Connecticut Society of Health-System Pharmacistsand yearbook editor for the Pharmacy StudentGovernment. She was inducted into Rho Chi and PhiLambda Sigma, for which she served as historian dur-ing her P3 year. In addition, Katelyn graduated SummaCum Laude with her Bachelors of Science in PharmacyStudies in May 2010, where she had the honor of beingnamed valedictorian of her pharmacy class. Throughout pharmacy school, Katelyn worked as apharmacy intern at Louis and Clark Drug inSpringfield, Massachusetts on school breaks. Duringthe summer after her P2 year, Katelyn was also hiredas a Pharmacy VALOR Student at the NorthamptonVA Medical Center in Leeds, Massachusetts throughthe Veterans Affairs Learning OpportunitiesResidency program. She had the opportunity to workdirectly with the clinical pharmacists, assisting withmultiple pharmacist-run clinics, performing treat-ment reviews, and conducting research for variousmedication and drug use evaluations. After her expe-rience as a VALOR Student, Katelyn hopes to obtain aresidency and become a clinical pharmacy specialistat a VA hospital upon graduating with her Pharm.D.in May 2012.

Katelyn Parsons’ and Taryn Merchant’s big night!

(Merchant continued) the fraternity on a national level, she attended the regional convention in Naples, Florida. It was then that she knew she wanted to run forDirectorum the following year. Coming into this posi-tion, she knew she would have to work hard in order torebuild a chapter that was losing most of its membersto graduation. After a successful year as Directorum in2009-2010, Taryn was reelected Directorum for thispast year. I believe she was reelected because we allknow how much she truly cares about AZO. She wasconstantly aware of the need to build a stronger chap-ter and helped encourage involvement from all fratersto ensure a smooth transition. During her two-year runas Directorum, the Kappa chapter has greatly increasedin numbers and has re-established a name on campus.Taryn is not only a wonderful leader for our fraternity, butalso a diligent student. I know she took many more elec-tive courses than are required because she has a thirstfor knowledge and wants to be the best pharmacist pos-sible when she graduates. On campus, she was a mem-ber of Students Promoting Awareness, Academy ofManaged Care Pharmacy, National CommunityPharmacists Association, American Society of HealthSystem Pharmacists, and was a founding member of the2nd national student chapter of College of Psychiatricand Neurologic Pharmacists. She devoted many hoursto the Student Committee on Drug Awareness whereshe served on the executive board for two consecutiveyears as well as she taught inner city students. It isthrough this organization that became certified in thetreatment and management of alcoholism and drugabuse. Taryn has shown that she has the attributes of atrue leader and as such was selected for membership inPhi Lambda Sigma as well as the Simon I. Sless award. She is currently involved with the Pi Beta Phi BaltimoreAlumni Club and helped to found the first pledge classat Johns Hopkins University. Back home and inMaryland, Taryn has remained a dedicated employee ofCVS/Caremark for the past eight years and actively par-ticipates in flu and blood pressure clinics, communityhealth fairs, and medication therapy reviews. Currently, Taryn is in her final semester of pharmacyschool and will be graduating with a PharmacyDoctorate in May. She has accepted an early offer,Pharmacist position with CVS/Caremark in SouthernCalifornia. However, she is also exploring potential res-idency programs with a focus in oncology. Tarynintends on remaining an active alumnus of AZO andwould not mind spreading the joys of AZO brother-hood to the west coast. In her own words, “I neverknew that AZO would become such an importantcomponent of my life. I am forever grateful to be a partof such a wonderful group of people, and for all theopportunities, memories, and life-long bonds that thisfraternity has bestowed upon me. I hope that I will beable to return the favor for generations to come.”

This national motto of France “Liberté, égalité, fra-ternité,” derived from its 18th century revolution, isrecognized the world over for its expectation of theideal human society that the popular upheavalwould generate. In our time and location, theUnited States Constitution and its subsequentamendments guarantee each American citizen lib-erty and equality, the collective rights thatAmericans have perpetually fought for and judicial-ly defended. Constitutionally absent from theFrench tripartite dictum is the concept of fraternity.

But just what is a fraternity and why is it significant? Two definitions for “fraternity” are “a society formedfor common purposes” and “brotherly love.” Theword has acquired an additional relevance when thefraternal society is gender neutral and becomes aharbor for both sexes. The concept of fraternity iscomprehensively popular as countless examplesexist in high school, college, and civic organizationssuch as The Odd Fellows, ancient societies such asThe Masons, and even groups formed for economicadvantage in the form of labor unions. An unfortu-nate example demonstrating the corruption of theconcept is the Ku Klux Klan, whose raison d’etre isthe propagation of hatred and violence. Happily, itis a declining exception.

In 1919, the precursor of the AZO was established atthe Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and our frater-nity remains vibrant and expanding almost a centurylater. Given the glut of fraternities competing formembership, one questions the admiration for, andattractiveness of AZO.

Many pharmacy students recognize the uniquenessof AZO among the other fraternal choices as it rep-resents more than temporary college frivolity andsuperficial amusement. The fraternity exemplifies aculture of pharmacists who choose to remain profes-sionally, communally and socially connectedthroughout their lifespan, demonstrating the finestexample of friendship and brotherly love. As stu-dents, AZO fraters aid each other to obtain gradua-tion and eventual licensure for all members. Upongraduation and after licensure, pharmacists dispersein many geographic locations and professional spe-cialties, but remain fraters of AZO for a lifetime.

AZO provides its members a multiplicity of activitiesat both the local and national realms. Within theindigenous Greek-lettered chapter, fraters enjoymeeting with their fellows in brotherhood while dis-cussing pharmaceutical issues, planning socialevents, obtaining continuing education credits, prac-ticing charity, honoring and remembering otherpharmacists, sharing personal life patterns andlifestyle activities, and community happenings andpolitics. Supreme offers the unique experience ofsharing these relationships by interfacing with fratersfrom all of the other diverse chapters during its semi-annual conventions in desirable and elegant locations.

These outstanding accomplishments have occurredthrough the expert guidance, pride and devotion ofthe generations of Directorums and other officerswho have directed and sustained AZO. 21st centuryAZO has no need for revolution, only the collectivewisdom of its fraters. Melvin Lessing

A Message from Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake:

It is my pleasure to welcome the members of Alpha Zeta Omega Professional Pharmaceutical Fraternity back to Baltimore for your annual National Summer Convention. I hope you enjoy your stay at the waterfront Pier 5 Hotel, right at the heart of Baltimore’s world-famous Inner Harbor.

Since its founding in 1919, Alpha Zeta Omega has worked diligently to promote excellence and nurture a body of professional men and women within the pharmaceutical profession. On behalf of the citizens of Baltimore, I want to thank your organization for your many years of service.

While you are here, I personally invite you to explore our historic city on the harbor. Take the time to visit our colorful neighborhoods, restaurants and shops, and most important, meet the people who make this city unique.

If you haven’t been to Baltimore before, you are in for a real treat. If you haven’t been here lately, I encourage you to go out and walk around to see all the changes taking place. You are our guest. Baltimore is ready to roll out the red carpet and provide you with a visit full of memories you won't soon forget.

Best wishes for a great convention. Keep up the good work!

Silent Mortars“The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.

Blessed be the name of the Lord”.It is my sad duty to report that the following Fraters have passed away during the past fraternal year:

These were merciful Fraters whose righteous deeds have not been forgotten. They are transmitted to their descendants; a good inheritance for their posterity.

This posterity shall endure forever and their glory will not be blotted out, they live buried in peace;their names live on for all generations. Alpha Zeta Omega will declare their wisdom and recite praise.

“May the Father of peace send peace to all who mourn and comfort all who are bereaved ”

Amen.

February 24, 1933 – February 28, 20121964-65 Supreme Directorum

1968 Meritorious Award Recipient

It is with great sadness to hear of the passing of Past Supreme Directorum Robert Kirschner. Eventhough Bob has only appeared at two Supreme meetings since his move to the Dominican Republicin 1997, his knowledge of multiple aspects of the operation of Alpha Zeta Omega from its inceptionto this day is unsurpassed.Bob Kirschner was born to Max and Esther Kirschner in the Bronx, New York and attendedColumbia University College of Pharmacy. From that fateful day of February 24, 1954, when Bobwas inducted into Zeta, until last month, Bob lived and breathed AZO. As Zeta Directorum in 1955-56, he was awarded a Directorum’s Cup. He repeated this with New York Alumni in 1962-63 alongwith being a Newspaper Contest winner in 1958.A 55 year history in Supreme started with two years as AzoMedic Chairman from 1956-58, followedby Historian, three years as Signare, 2nd Sub-Directorum, 1st Sub-Directorum, and culminating withhis election as Supreme Directorum. During his term as Directorum, the Order of the Double StarAward was established. Following his Directorship, Bob was appointed Director of FraternalAffairs, a position created exclusively for him. He was subsequently reappointed every year until heannounced his upcoming retirement in 1983. Since 1985, following his retirement from this position,he has held the title of Director of Fraternal Affairs Emeritus.Among his other accomplishments, Bob co-authored “40 Years of AZO”, in which he compiled a listingof every Frater every inducted. He later was the author of “A 10 Year Survey of AZO” and “And 10Makes 60.”In 1974, having moved to New Jersey, Bob switched his allegiance to the Epsilon Chapter where heremained until he moved out of the country in 1997. It was during this time period when he metCarmen and her son Alex, who would put an end to his bachelorhood.Bob would be the person found at 2 am in convention hotel lobbies talking with anyone who wantedto listen and learn about AZO’s history, traditions, folklore, future expansion, fraternalism, and any-thing else, as long as it had something to do with AZO. Bob Kirschner will always be remembered as the true definition of AZO Fraternalism.

Rest in Peace, Frater

Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education

CPE Monitor: Information forPharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians

What is CPE Monitor?CPE Monitor is a national, collaborative effort by ACPE and the National Association of Boards ofPharmacy (NABP) to provide an electronic system for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to tracktheir completed continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credits. It will also offer boards of pharmacy theopportunity to electronically authenticate the CPE units completed by their licensees, rather than requiringpharmacists and pharmacy technicians to submit their proof of completion statements (i.e. statements ofcredit) upon request or for random audits.

How CPE Monitor WorksPharmacists and pharmacy technicians will receive a unique identification number (ID) after setting uptheir e-Profile with NABP (see How to Register for CPE Monitor). Beginning in the latter part of 2011,pharmacist and pharmacy technician participants will provide their NABP e-Profile ID and date of birth (inMMDD format) to the ACPE-accredited provider when they register for a CPE activity or submit a requestfor credit. It will be the responsibility of the pharmacist or pharmacy technician to provide the correct infor-mation [i.e. ID and DOB (in MMDD format)] in order to receive credit for participating in a CPE activity.CPE Monitor system will direct electronic data from ACPE-accredited providers to ACPE, then to NABP,ensuring CPE credit is officially verified by the providers. Once information is received by NABP, pharma-cists and pharmacy technicians can log in to access information about their completed CPE activities.

How to Register for CPE MonitorPharmacists and pharmacy technicians are asked to obtain their NABP e-Profile ID at www.MyCPEmonitor.netto ensure their e-Profile is properly setup prior to implementation of CPE Monitor. Towards the end of 2011,e-Profile ID will be required to receive credit for any ACPE-accredited CPE activities.

Set up your NABP e-Profile to obtain your IDSIGN UP AT: http://www.nabp.net/programs/cpe-monitor/cpe-monitor-service

Benefiting Pharmacists and Pharmacy TechniciansCPE Monitor will provide a secure, central system that maintains and tracks all ACPE-accredited CPE cred-its. This streamlined process will eliminate the need to file and maintain hard copy statements of credit forCPE activities taken from ACPE-accredited providers. Instead, online access to their inventory of complet-ed credits will allow pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to easily monitor their compliance with the CPErequirements of the state or states where they hold a license or registration. Licensees of participating boardswill no longer have to mail hard copy proof of CPE statements of credit to those boards. The NABP e-Profile is available 24/7 for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to view a comprehensive listof the ACPE-accredited CPE activities they have taken. Information will be maintained in a secure environ-ment. ACPE and NABP do not distribute any personal information for commercial purposes without consent.Pharmacists or pharmacy technicians with questions regarding their NABP e-Profile or CPE Monitor shouldrefer to the FAQ section on the NABP website or contact NABP Customer Service.
