Through The Shadow Of DeathBy: Daniel J. Bickley
Chapter 1
Peter jolted awake, shocked to find himself lying on a cot in a room he didnt
recognize. He looked around for a moment, trying to figure out where he was and whyhe was there, but couldnt make sense of anything around him. He was in what some
kind of huge room filled almost wall to wall with cots like some kind of a field hospital.
With that observation he started scanning the hundreds of beds hoping that she wassomewhere nearby, but he was completely alone. Wondering where she was and fearing
that he may have just been dragged into yet another threat, he reached to the side of his
cot and felt for his shotgun and hatchet. But there was nothing there.
Horrified that he was completely unarmed, he began pushing himself up to get outof bed and was immediately struck with agonizing pain shooting from his legs to his
chest. A moment later, he remembered everything. He recalled running into that group of degenerates, armed to the teeth and devoid
of morals, when he was alone in the forest. He remembered how they beat him until he
fell unconscious and how he woke up gagged and with a black bag over his head as he
rolled down the road in one of their vehicles. He remembered the abuse they inflicted onhim in the following days, until they shot him in the chest and he lost consciousness
again, before waking up in bed.
Peter, sure that those monsters were somehow behind his current predicament,
fought through his pain and pushed himself up before swinging his legs over the edge ofthe cot. He thought back to before those monsters captured him and recalled how he left
her alone as he went off by himself. He was so stupid to have done that, so stupid to have
let her out of his sight. He pictured her standing in that street, all alone as night fell, wondering if he was dead or had left her. The thought of that, the mere thought, caused
his eyes to fill with tears. So as he struggled to stand up in his weakened state, he
resolved, like many time before, that he had to escape and find her. He had to make upfor the things hed said to her, had to let her know that he hadnt abandoned her and that
he still loved her as much as he had the first time they went out together.
When he made it to his feet he took a step forward, just thinking of her, and then
took another step forward. With every movement his strength grew, fueled by hisdetermination to get back to her, until he was jogging towards the large double doors, not
even acknowledging his aching body and muscles.
Before he knew it he was ten feet away from the closed doors, the first of many
obstacles between him and his love, he was sure. Then, when he was just two feet away,he kicked the right door as hard as he could with his bare foot, thus breaching his first
obstacle. He had no idea what was waiting for him through that doorway, but nevertheless
he leapt through like a rampaging lion, catching sight of two men holding M-4 assault
rifles. Not even caring that they were armed and he wasnt, Peter pounced at them, punching one of the men in the face and pushing the other to the ground. Then, while his
enemies were still off guard, he threw a barrage of attacks at them just as hed been

taught, striking their throats, eyes, and crotches until both men were completely
incapacitated. He knelt down, about to snatch away their rifles and side arms, when a
hard, flat object struck the back of his neck, sending him to the ground. Before Peter could recover, he felt someone press their knee between his shoulder
blades as he was handcuffed.
Let me go you bastards! He shouted out as loud as he could, still strugglingdespite his compromised, helpless position.
Doc, give him something now! The man holding him called out.
Peter was still struggling, fighting against his unseen enemy, when he felt a pinchin his arm. He started getting drowsy, still trying to fight his way free, but it was no use.
Within seconds, Peter was unconscious once again.
Three Weeks Before The Outbreak
I have a bad feeling, Peter, Susan said.
Why? Peter asked. I mean, I can tell something is bothering you. But I
justI havent been able to figure out what.I know, Susan said, her eyes falling to the red and white checkered table their
pizza was sitting on. Almost involuntarily her hand moved up to the locket around herneck and she began to nervously fiddle with it. IIm not entirely sure what it is either.
I mean I know what my brain is telling me and its justits just so crazy. Its too insane
for me to consider without wondering if Im crazy too, but I cant put it out of my head. I
cant ignore it no matter how hard I try. Every day when I see the news, I get moreconcerned and every day Im in this stupid city, I get more and more uneasy. She fell
silent for a moment, trying to organize her thoughts so she could explain them coherently,
and then looked up at Peter. His brow was creased and he was looking at her with aconcerned frown. Susan knew how worried he was about her. She was worried about
herself too. It was the only logical response to the crazy thoughts and notions shambling
through her mind. She kept trying to find a way to quantify it all, to put the complex emotions and
gut feelings she was having into narrow, finite terms. Finally she thought of something
that came relatively close.
Its like, she began slowly, in the summertime when a storm blows in. Thewarm air suddenly turns cold as the wind shifts. The blue sky is darkened with black,
angry clouds, and then the air gets thick and its like the entire world tenses up. Its like
all you want to do is get inside and hide until the clouds release their fury and the worldcan relax again. She fell silent for a second. I just feel like something bad is coming,
Peter.
Okay, Peter said with a nod, trying to understand the sense of foreboding Susanhad. What do you think is coming, then?
Susan took a few moments before answering, terrified to vocalize the crazy
thoughts shed tried and failed to suppress for days. Its hard to explain, she said quietly.
Alright, Peter said, leaning back, trying to think of a different way to approach
the matter without pushing Susan. When did you first start feeling like this then?

That, at least, was an easier question to answer. Susan knew exactly when her
feeling started. So slowly and deliberately, she answered.
It all started with the Florida attack. That was weeks ago, Peter said.
I know. Within days of that happening there were two more stories of crazed
cannibals going after people just like in Florida. Then what happened? The reports juststopped.
Thats because there havent been more attacks, Peter explained. It was just
one crazy person attacking someone and then two more unhinged people copying him.But what if it wasnt? Susan asked, looking at Peter with fear in her eyes. The
attacks havent gotten any more press, sure, but that doesnt mean there havent been
more. Lets not forget that since then theres supposedly been a nationwide rise in
violent crime. That could just be a coincidence.
Yeah, it could have been, Susan affirmed. Thats why I started researching it.
And know what? All this crap isnt limited to the U.S.!
What do you mean? Peter asked, surprised.I started looking at foreign new sources, Susan continued, and without
exception they mirror what was reported here. There are a couple reports of crazedcannibal attacks somewhere in the country and then nothing after. Ive even found
stories talking about a rise in crime across Europe!
Youre sure these sources were reputable? Peter asked, hoping shed made a
mistake. You didnt just stumble onto foreign versions of The Onion? No, they were reputable, Susan assured him. All that got my mind going.
Why wouldnt any news agencies pick up on the similar attacks happening across the
world? I did that on my laptop, after all, and they have thousands and thousands timesthe resources I do. And then I realized what it must be, she said, finally picking up
steam.
What? They are picking up on the similarities. They have to be. Theyre just not
reporting it.
Why wouldnt they report it?
Because the government is scared of how people would react if word of what isreally happening got out. People would panic and thats the last thing anyone wants.
What is really happening then? Peter asked, glad to finally get back to the heart
of the matter.Surprisingly enough, Susan began slowly, forcing her fear from her mind as she
deliberately continued, from everything Ive read I think the media got it right the first
time. Remember how they were referring to the attacks, the term they used?Peter paused for a moment, shocked that Susan was actually considering that as a
possibility. He prayed that she wasnt serious. He couldnt see how she could be
considering the insanity of what she was suggesting. It had to be a bad joke.I do. But Susan, were not in a George A. Romero movie, he reasoned, hoping
she would forget her bizarre notions and return to reality.
I know. I wish we were. Movies make sense, there are rules controlling what
happens. But this is real life and there are no rules. And as crazy as it sounds thats what

I think is coming. I feel like the clouds are gathering, preparing to burst. No matter what
the government does this situation is going to blow up soon, and when that happens the
last place in the world I want to be is in the middle of New York City.So what, you want to leave? Peter asked, still struggling to wrap his head
around what Susan was saying.
Yes.We cant just drop everything and flee the city. We have jobs, Susan. We have
apartments and responsibilities.
I know, Susan responded desperately. I know it sounds insane but I shebegan, struggling to find an adequate conclusion to her sentence. I dont even know,
she ended uneasily, looking away from Peter again.
They sat there for a moment in silence, neither sure of what to do. Peter found it
hard not to dismiss what Susan was saying out of hand considering how crazy it seemed, but he resolved that he had to hear her out completely before passing judgment. Susan
felt her worries were important enough to share with him, after all. The only decent thing
he could do was take them seriously.
If we were to leave the city for a while, where would you want to go? Heasked.
Susan looked back at him, slightly shocked. Then, encouraged, she answered.I was thinking your parents place. When they were here they talked about us
going to visit them, and right now Id rather be in a nice cabin in the woods than the city.
As long as we dont find theNecronomiconin the basement, she joked, forcing a small
smile. To that, Peter smiled too, astonished that Susan was still able to joke despite her
worries and the serious discussion they were having. But then again, her indomitable
spirit was one of the reasons hed fallen in love with her.For a second his thoughts turned to the first moment he and Susan saw Guginos
Pizza, during their first date. Their cabby had mixed up Guginos Pizza with the
restaurant they were actually supposed to be at, which resulted in them losing theirreservation. Peter had been horrified, feeling like their date was an unmitigated disaster
and that Susan would never want to go out with him again, until Susan coolly and happily
suggested that they just eat some pizza. That simple suggestion scythed through his
anxiety and fear, the same way her bright spirit had many times since then. Peter wasused to being the worrier and having his ridiculous anxieties relieved by Susan. So now
that it was one of the rare instances where he could actually help her, he was determined
not to let her down.He thought about everything Susan told him. Her seemingly insane ideas, as he
said, belonged more in a George A. Romero movie than the real world. But at the same
time, he did trust and believe in Susan completely. He didnt believe that shed beenfooled by some kind of conspiracy website or pseudo-news source. And so if she had
indeed found the evidence that she said she had, it meant that something strange was
going on even if her inferences from that evidence werent correct. But then, with that, he realized that it didnt matter whether or not he believed as
Susan did. What mattered was that Susan believed what she was saying. And then, since
she did, the question became what he was going to do about it. Would he try to argue
and laugh as if her fears were ridiculous? Or would he accept how Susan felt and put his

own skepticism aside for her sake? He loved her more than anyone hed ever known, and
more than anything he wanted to be there for her in her time of need. But at the same
time, he felt that they had to approach the situation logically. So with all that in mind, hedid his best to come up with an adequate solution for them both.
How about this, Peter began, Ill make a deal with you.
Whats the deal? Susan asked, unsure.Like we both know, we cant just pick up and leave for who knows how long.
We have work, after all. So what if we wait for a clearer sign that what you think is
happening actually is.What would the sign be? Susan asked hesitatingly.
If youre right, Peter continued, then this thing is surely spreading like any
other pandemic. That means that sooner or later the government will be forced to shut
down the airports to slow the spread. Theyll start to lose control of the situation, likeyou said.
How do you know that?
I watch TV, Peter answered, only half joking. Cutting off air travel is one of
the first precautions theyll take to contain a spreading disease. So if and when thathappens that will be the sign for us to cut and run. Well hop on my motorcycle and be in
Ohio before the clouds burst. Alright?Alright, Susan agreed, smiling slightly and already seeming more relaxed. At
least Peter wasnt calling the men in white coats to take her away.
Good, Peter said, glad to see that her mood had lightened, if only slightly.
Now lets get eating. This pizza is good cold, but its torture just having it just sit herewhile we talk.
Susan couldnt have agreed more. So with that, they finally started to dig into
their pizza, both of them still thinking about their deal and wondering what would happenin the following days.
Only one week later an American 747 en route to Australia blew up over the
Pacific Ocean. The media reported that the FAA suspected terrorism even though nogroup had yet claimed responsibility. In response, and in an effort to prevent more
imminent attacks, they were officially grounding all commercial passenger jets until
further notice.
Two hours after Peter and Susan heard the reports they were already packed andriding out of the city on Peters motorcycle. As the miles flew by and they grew closer
and closer to Ohio, Peter couldnt help but be suspicious of the governments story.
After everything Susan told him, it all seemed a little too convenient. So to his shock, hefound himself wondering if maybe Susan was right after all.
When Peter woke up, he found himself in the cot again, though he quicklyrealized that hed been gagged and his arms and legs were cuffed to the bed. He looked
this way and that, searching for his enemies. He didnt know how he was going to do it,
but he vowed that hed get free and finish them once and for all.Oh good, youre finally awake, a man said from outside Peters visual range.
Now we can finally have a conversation, he said, stepping next to the bed and sitting
down so Peter could finally see him.

The man was dressed all in black. He had on a bullet proof vest, cargo pants, a
black jacket, and a side arm. He had close cropped hair, which was mostly hidden under
a black beret. Peter was shocked to see an American Flag on the mans jacket shoulder. My name is Colonel Danner, the man said. Im in the United States Army,
and mean you no harm. Now if I un-gag you, youre not going to try to bite my face off
like one of the infected, are you?Peter, still extremely suspicious, shook his head. He needed answers, after all,
and if the only way to get them was to behave civilly, so be it.
Danner, nodding and trusting Peters word, reached out and removed the gag.Where are we? Peter asked immediately.
Were in the safe zone, Danner answered.
What? Peter asked rhetorically, shocked and confused.
The people who had you came up into this area about two days ago, Dannerexplained. We kept an eye on them, and determined they were a danger to us here. My
men and I neutralized them, and thats when we found you. You were unconscious and
seriously wounded, so we brought you back here.
Why should I believe you? Peter replied suspiciously. How do I know youarent working for those monsters?
The people who kidnapped you clearly had no more use for you or they wouldnthave put a hole in your chest. If I was with them its safe to assume Id want you dead
too, in which case digging the lead out of you seems pretty counterintuitive, doesnt it?
Peter had to admit that Danner had a point.
So were in North Dakota? He asked.Yes. I assume youve heard of this place before then?
Yeah, a friend said something about it awhile back, Peter answered, feeling a
twinge of grief as his mind turned to her for a moment. That group captured me inColorado though, he then stated, getting back to the matter at hand. Why did they drag
me all the way up to North Dakota?
I dont have the slightest idea, Danner responded.Peter nodded, believing the soldier.
Well, thank you for helping me. I really do appreciate it, but I need to get out of
here, he said, looking down at the handcuffs. I dont want to inconvenience you any
more than I already have.Whats the rush? Danner asked, surprised. Most people start weeping for joy
when they make it here. They dont wonder when theyll be able to leave.
I know, and in other circumstances Id be just as happy as them, but I need to go.You see I wasntI wasnt traveling alone when that group captured me, Peter
revealed, having trouble remaining in control as he thought of Susan. My girlfriend and
I were apart for just a little while and thats when they grabbed me. As grateful as I amto you for everything youve done for me, I need to get out of here so I can find her.
Whats your girlfriends name, if you dont mind me asking?
Its Susan, Peter answered. She has blonde hair, and shes like five inchesshorter than me. Shes beautiful, and has a machete andand he said, struggling to
continue.
Danner nodded slightly, his expression suddenly becoming detached and pensive.

What is it? Peter asked a second later, noticing the change in the soldier. Do
you know something about her?
Yeah I do, Danner responded, looking back at Peter with a sympathetic smile.I do, and let me tell you that you can stop worrying about her.
Shes here?
Shes fine, Danner replied. Can I see her? Peter asked eagerly, his heart leaping.
Danner took a moment, thinking it over.
Give me a few minutes, and Ill be back, he said, getting up and starting toleave.
Thank you, Peter called after him.
He watched Danner walk away silently until the colonel finally left the room.
When the doors to the infirmary were closed Danner, still thoughtful and serious, turned to one of the soldiers nearby.
Corporal, he said to him.
Yes sir? The corporal responded.
Get Captain Davis. Tell him to come here, and to bring that locket he foundafter our meeting with those back-wood mongrels.
Yes sir, the corporal replied, taking off to obey his new orders.Danner then glanced back at the double doors, trying to figure out the best way to
handle Peter.
Finally, after ten minutes, the corporal returned, Captain Davis following behind.
Davis, Danner called to his inferior.Yes sir? Davis responded.
Give me that locket you found, the colonel ordered. Youre not going to be
able to give it to your daughter after all.Davis, looking extremely disappointed, reluctantly reached into his pocket and
handed Danner a small, oval, golden locket.
You have a problem giving this up? Danner asked passive aggressively, seeingthe look on Davis face.
No sir, Davis answered promptly, doing his best to make his face a blank
canvass.
Thats what I thought. Have you altered it in any way?No sir.
Good. Where exactly did you find this thing again? Was it on a body?
No sir. One of the men we killed had it.Alright, now get back to your post, Danner ordered.
Knowing how he was going to deal with Peter, Danner stepped back into the
infirmary.Peter, expecting to see Susan walk in next to Danner, was surprised to see the
colonel return alone. He tried to stay optimistic, telling himself that Susan would show
up soon, but he got a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach.Wheres Susan? He asked.
This belonged to her, didnt it? Danner asked back, handing him the locket.
Yes, Peter answered his heart beating faster at the mere sight. How did you
get it?

One of my men recovered it after we rescued you. He was going to give it to his
daughter, who is also named Susan.
So Susan was captured? Peter asked, shocked. I didnt know that group foundher too, he remarked, completely horrified. He started to shake slightly as he
remembered what those men had done to him and thought about them doing the same, or
worse, to Susan. Where is she? He asked loudly, struggling to stay in control. Whywont you tell me where she is? He shouted.
Peter, Danner began tenderly, Susan was shot, just like you. Only unlike you,
we didnt get to her in time. No, Peter said, unable to believe it. No! He roared hysterically. You have
to be wrong! She cant be dead!
The proof is in your hands, Danner responded. How else would we have
gotten that? You have to be wrong, Peter said weakly, desperately, as if saying it enough
times would make it true.
Were not, Danner affirmed. Im very sorry.
With that Danner got up to leave Peter alone. Peter started weepinguncontrollably and groaning as he repeated no over and over.
When Danner closed the doors behind himself Peter was shouting again, inincomprehensible grief and pain over what hed just learned.
Keep an eye on him, Danner ordered one of the soldiers standing nearby. He
could be useful to us, he added coldly.
Then, without showing any more concern for Peter or his shouts, Danner turnedand left.
The Outbreak
Its a pickup truck with an outboard motor on the back. How on earth does he
think its going to work as a boat? Susan asked.Peter looked over at her, a smile on his face.
Youve never watched Top Gearbefore, have you?
No, Susan answered, watching the truck with the outboard motor on the back
shoot through the water. Its better than James though. Hes going like two miles anhour.
Just wait. It gets much, much better, Peter said, knowing what was coming
next.It was the episode of Top Gearwhere the presenters tried to build their own
amphibious cars, mostly to disastrous results. It was getting close to the end, when
Richard and Jeremy were approaching the victory buoy and due to an overly aggressiveturn on Jeremys part his Toybota Hilux flipped over in the water. Susan and Peter both
laughed as Jeremy lay on top of the bottom of his boat, hitting it in frustration, when
Peters parents, Clay and Janet, burst in from the living room. From the looks on theirfaces Peter and Susan could tell that whatever was happening was serious.
Come in here now, Clay said. You need to see this.
Peter and Susan exchanged worried looks, before following them into the living
room.

Whats going on? Peter asked, sitting down in a plush chair.
In response Clay just pointed at the TV.
The ticker at the bottom of the screen said that rioting had broken out in LosAngeles, Chicago, New York, and fifteen other big cities. Peter watched in horror as
they cut to live footage being broadcast from a reporter who had been allowed to tag
along in a military helicopter.Peter and Susan immediately recognized the image as Times Square. Theyd
been there and had driven past it hundreds of times. The normal mass of cars was there
but unmoving, the street like a cemetery of dead steel. Newspaper and plastic bags wereblowing in the wind as if they were tumbleweeds in a Western movie. The bright lights
formerly coming from the buildings and advertisements were out, replaced by huge,
portable spotlights the military had brought in. The beams of light shot through the
darkness like lasers, illuminating whatever was in their path. And the normally crowdedsidewalks and streets were filled with what appeared to be two armies about to meet in
battle. On one side there was the police and what appeared to be National Guardsmen.
The police were behind a line of riot shields and all were heavily armed. The National
Guardsmen had a line of Humvees and tanks, barring the little of the road that wasntalready blocked by abandoned cars.
On the other side was a mass of seemingly normal, everyday people. Petercouldnt see very clearly, but he thought he could make out men in expensive suits,
homeless people, skateboarders, hipsters, Goths, and every other subculture he could
think of. There were even a few people dressed like policemen. The newsman talking
from the helicopter also commented on the diversity of the people and how odd thatseemed. But the other strange thing, even stranger than the diversity, was that they didnt
appear to be rioting.
Peter pictured rioting as a screaming crowd of angry people, taking their emotionsout on any authority figure near. They threw rocks and bottles of urine; they set cars and
trash cans on fire; they looted electronics stores and they ran all over the place causing as
much havoc as possible. But the supposed rioters werent doing any of that. They werejust quietly marching towards the group of soldiers and police.
Thats not what Id call a riot, Clay remarked, voicing what Peter was thinking.
The people continued forward, towards the armed forces, tripping over each other
and the litter on the ground. Finally, when they got too close for comfort, the police andsoldiers opened fire.
Theyre not doing anything! Peter exclaimed angrily as the soldiers and cops
fired into the seemingly unarmed, peaceful crowd.People began to go down, obviously shot. Peter couldnt believe that anyone
would gun down innocent people like that. But then, to his shock, another thing he didnt
expect to happen did: the figures that had been shot and fell to the ground got back up,continuing their march forward.
The newsman in the chopper couldnt believe his eyes, and before anyone
watching was able to fully process what was going on most of the people that seemed tohave been killed were walking as if nothing happened. Only a few had stayed down.
The mass of people continued their march, under continuous fire. More fell, but
most of those that did got back up again and continued walking, not even phased by their
wounds.

Peter glanced over at Susan, realizing that everything shed found out, everything
she suspected, was true, even the seemingly unbelievable parts about the dead rising.
Peter looked back at the TV and immediately could see that the police andsoldiers were getting desperate. They were firing everything they had by that time. Their
tanks let fly their massive shells as smaller stationary guns roared away into the crowd,
peppering the people with bullets. The street was filled with spent casings from everyprojectile imaginable. People were shot and knocked to the ground faster than ever, but
the group was somehow still moving forward.
But then, before anyone knew what was happening, more people appeared onscreen. Dark figures started pouring from seemingly every crevice in the city, completely
surrounding the cops and guardsman.
Finally, after what seemed like hours, as if it had been a carefully planned
flanking maneuver, people on every side reached the soldiers and cops. To Petershorror, they sprang into action.
Immediately they were crowding the force on the ground like cannibalistic
Twilightfans around Robert Pattinson, biting and grabbing at them. In no time at all the
entire ground force had disappeared under a mountain of people.Peter, Susan, Clay, and Janet continued watching until the chopper turned and
began flying away. The newsman inside began to talk about receiving an order to vacatethe airspace and land as soon as possible.
The helicopter continued to leave until the sound of the reporters talking was
drowned out by the noise of jets in the air. The camera panned around, facing the
direction theyd just left. Sure enough two f-22 Raptors were flying towards TimesSquare. A second after the camera had them in frame, the fighters fired their ordinances.
The missiles streaked through the air for a second until their explosions were
clearly seen, piles of rubble and flames streaking into the air. When that was done, theRaptors circled around, getting ready for another pass.
With that they cut back to the studio. The newsman sitting there looked pale and
sickened. He sat there in silence for a moment, until he finally began to sputter wordsout.
How can this be happening? Janet asked, starting to cry and covering her face
with her hands.
I dont know honey, Clay said, going over and pulling her into a hug.Peter, meanwhile, looked over at Susan, oblivious to everything else. Her face
was white and she just kept gazing at the TV as if hypnotized.
Peter stared at her for a minute as he thought of everything that happened, of theFlorida attack and the attacks that came after. He thought of the news reports about a rise
in crime and his and Susans meeting when she told him all of her fears. He remembered
how crazy the things she was saying seemed. And then he realized that Susans instinctsand fears were the only reason they were still alive.
Feeling simultaneously grateful that Susan had saved them and terrified about
what the future held, Peter got up and joined her on the loveseat. How are you doing? He asked feeling as if hed just been gut kicked by a
kangaroo.

In response she just looked over at him and burst into tears. As he gently hugged
her, struggling to stay in control, he was overwhelmed with the realization that the world
has just irrevocably changed.Nearly ten minutes later, when everyone had regained their composure, Clay took
charge of the room.
Heres what were going to do, he began strongly. We have to make this placeas secure as possible, so we need to keep all the doors and windows locked. When thats
done lets get everything useful together in one of the closets around here so we know
right where it is. Then well try to get some sleep. Peter, you and I are going to taketurns watching tonight. Alright?
Yes sir, Peter said.
Everyone is to have at least a pistol and a knife in reach tonight, just in case
something happens and we need to defend ourselves. They all understood and began to gather anything useful.
The fact that Clay used to be a soldier and had fought in Vietnam meant that he
knew how to keep cool in stressful and dangerous situations. That ability kept everyone
together and calm when they could potentially fall apart. It felt like if they just did whathe said they would all be fine.
They were done getting everything together in an hour and a half. Since Clay wasa hunter and outdoorsman they found a plethora of useful items in the house. Aside from
the many guns and knives there were also sleeping bags, iodine tablets, waterproof
matches, lighters, axes, machetes, tools, survival blankets, canned food, and enough
water to last for weeks. But the most valuable it seemed to Peter, were the three largecontainers of gas hed found. This gasoline, which they used in their generator in case
the power went out, meant that they could stay away from gas stations. Those, Peter was
sure, would be mad houses and extremely dangerous after what theyd just witnessed.About twenty minutes later they finished arranging their supplies in two closets
just off the living room. Peter and Clay then went around making sure all the doors and
windows were locked. When they were sure they were secure and all the curtains wereclosed, Susan and Janet tucked in for the night.
Good night, Peter said to Susan.
Night, Susan responded quietly, exhausted from the day theyd had and her
throat hurting from all her crying. Please stay safe.I will. Ill be downstairs the whole time, Peter said, trying to reassure her even
though he was terrified. Then he leaned down and kissed her. I love you.
I love you too, she responded. And Susan?
What?
Thank you forfor what you did. For what you found out. If you hadnt donethat we could still be in New York and beand be he said, unable to pronounce the
words.
Youre welcome, Susan finally said. With that Peter left the room and went to take the first watch.

Chapter 2
Susan was walking along the highway, her stomach growling as shed had almostnothing to eat for days. She knew she needed to find somewhere to get some rest and
food, but as she thought about what happened to Peter she questioned whether shed ever
be able to sleep or eat again.Even up until she escaped from that group of mongrels she had no idea that they
had taken Peter too. Back in Colorado those men had come up upon her suddenly,
cutting off her escape routes before she could even react. At the time Peter was off on hisown in the forest, needing to be alone as he tried to sort through everything that had just
happened. She tried to tell herself that there was no way she could have known that Peter
had been kidnapped too. They were separated when they were taken, after all, and her
captors had kept a bag over her head and a gag in her mouth. Yet still, despite thosefacts, she couldnt help but think that if shed just found some clue, some indication that
theyd caught him too, that hed still be alive.
Her eyes welled up with tears as she thought of Peter and what had happened to
him. Shed done her best to keep from becoming a basket case in the last few days, butevery moment was a struggle. Her solitude itself was a constant reminder of Peters
death. It was a constant reminder that she was now completely alone in the world.Susans first tear of the day was about to fall when she swallowed hard,
determined to keep herself together. She didnt have the luxury of falling apart. She had
to keep moving if she was going to survive; she had to keep fighting if she was going to
keep herself from being devoured by the legions of monsters now walking about thewaking world. That was what Peter would have wanted, after all. He wouldnt have
wanted his death to spoil whatever kind of life Susan still had the chance to live.
There has to be something around here, she said to herself, glancing around atthe empty highway, trying to take her mind off of Peter.
In the distance she could just make out a bright green sign over the road,
hopefully advertising somewhere with food. As she got closer she saw that it indicatedan exit just a few miles away, the first shed come across in days.
Walking to the exit ramp seemed like torture to Susan. Her stomach, now
expecting sustenance soon, growled voraciously as if it was a starving dog that just
caught sight of a shred of meat. Every step took more and more effort, Susans legsfeeling heavy as if she was wearing twenty pound ankle weights. But finally, after
slightly over an hour, she reached the exit ramp. When she made it up she was happy to
see a large gas station, doubling as a convenience store, right in front of her.Awesome, she remarked to herself. Then, hoping that she would soon find
food, she drew her machete and started forward, watching for any zombies.
When she made it inside the seemingly abandoned store she stood there andlooked around for a second. It was unsettlingly still.
If Peter was there, like the many other times theyd looted grocery stores and
houses together, Susan would have marched forward confidently, shouting out to attractany zombies that could be lurking nearby. She would have insulted them and thrown
pots and pans on the ground until they revealed themselves. But standing there all alone,
Susan didnt have the heart for any of that.

Hello? Just come out so I can kill you, she ordered. Im really not in the
mood for this right now, she added apathetically.
Immediately three zombies turned around an aisle and began making their waytowards her, moaning and reaching their hands out like Frankensteins Monster.
As Susan stood there, watching them slowly approach, her grief for Peter was
momentarily overpowered by her loathing of the zombies. She burned with hatred as shewas reminded of everything those monsters had taken from her. She thought of her old
friends and coworkers in New York, either blasted into bits by the governments bombs
or shambling around as the living dead. She thought of Clay, and Janet, and Maggie, andHal, every one of them having been killed by beasts just like those shambling towards
her. And then, finally, she thought of Peter. She knew that technically he had been killed
by humans, but she also knew that he would still be alive if it wasnt for the zombies.
They were not only responsible for putting the human race on the endangered species list, but also for the degeneration of the humans that were still alive. The rise of the undead
had opened the stage for rampaging bands of murderers, just like the one that had killed
Peter.
Lets do this, she said determinedly, drawing a knife from her belt. Then, letting out a scream of fury, she threw the blade into one of the zombies heads, killing it.
With one taken care of she geared up for the others. The other two finally reached her and then, with the agility and precision of the
martial artist she was, Susan cleaved both of their skulls with her machete. The zombies
fell to the ground, limp, but Susans rage and sorrow were still bubbling inside her. She
stared at them for a moment, her hands shaking slightly. She breathed in and out deeply, trying to calm down. Again she told herself that she couldnt lose control. She had to
remain calm if she was going to live. A minute later, after repeating that to herself over
and over, her hands stopped shaking. She was in control again, though barely. With that Susan, assuming shed taken care of all the zombies, started loading her
bag up with food, hurrying to finish her shopping. Her focus was so complete and her
mind so singularly set on the task ahead of her that she didnt realize that there was afourth zombie headed for her. This one didnt have any legs, so it was literally dragging
itself across the floor by its fingernails. The zombies throat had also been ripped out, so
it couldnt even moan like the others had. Its skin was dark brown and leathery, so much
so that it almost looked as if it had died and roasted in a tanning bed for a few days. The zombie continued to silently drag itself forward until it finally reached Susan.
It held out its hand, about to grab hold of her ankle and take a bite, when Susan stepped
away to look for the maps. Her foot brushed up against the zombies hand, finallybreaking her focus. When she looked down, expecting to see something harmless on the
floor, she was shocked to see how close the zombie had come to biting her.
Before the monster could get any closer Susan drew her machete and split its headopen. But instead of shrugging the zombie off, she stood there looking down at it as if
stunned.
As she stared down at the pitiful, homicidal creature at her feet she wasnt sure ifshe was relieved, or dismayed that it hadnt bitten her. And with that thought came
another: the thought that if had indeed killed her she would finally be with Peter again.
With that the tentative control shed gained over herself collapsed. Before she
could even think she let out a shrill scream, plunging her machete into the zombies skull

again. As she removed her weapon the grief she had been trying to suppress for so long
came pouring out. Tears were streaming down her face as she screamed, and screamed,
and screamed, all the while chopping away at the zombie in her in rage and hatred. Finally, after three minutes, she collapsed to the floor sobbing uncontrollably. All
she could think about, all that was running through her head was that Peter was gone and
she was never going to get him back. She was never going to see him smile again, nevergoing to hear his voice again, never going feel his embrace again, never going to give
him another kiss. And knowing that, feeling it, overwhelmed her.
One Year And Four Months Before The Outbreak
Susan was standing outside her apartment building, patiently waiting for Peter to
pick her up for their first date. When she checked her watch she was surprised to findthat he was running late. Peter, shed quickly learned after they started working together,
was a worrier who hated it when unexpected occurrences interfered with his meticulous
plans. Still, despite the presumed monkey wrench that had already been thrown at their
night, she was sure theyd have a fantastic time. Shed been shocked, and more than alittle impressed, to learn that Peter had somehow gotten them reservations at Guginos, a
new Italian restaurant that was creating quite a buzz. Shed even seen it featured on theFood Network. When she casually made a comment to Peter about how nice it looked
she had absolutely no expectancy of actually eating there. Yet somehow, completely
blowing her expectations out of the water, Peter had miraculously landed them a table.
Then, just adding to the grandeur of the night, after they were done eating they weregoing to seeLes Miserableson Broadway. Susan couldnt remember if she mentioned it
to Peter or not, but it was by far her favorite musical and one of her favorite books.
As she stood there, starting to nervously run her hands through her hair, shecouldnt help but smile as her thoughts turned to Peter, butterflies in her stomach. In the
time theyd known each other Peter had never once let her down. When she stumbled
after her heel broke on her first day of work, he was there to literally catch her. Whentheir boss Michael went off on them for a mistake Susan had made on a joint project,
Peter stuck up for her, putting his own job on the line to save hers. Yes, he could be self
conscious and overreact about small things, but at his core he was a kind, courageous
man willing to do anything for those he cared about. So it didnt come as any surprise toher that soon after they met she started to like him. And it was no wonder to her that
every time she thought of him it reduced her to an utterly childish state of giddy joy.
Peter, meanwhile, was tapping his finger against his thigh nervously as he rodedown the crowded Manhattan street in the back of a cab. Every time they passed an
intersection Peter would glance over at the street sign, eagerly awaiting the moment when
theyd finally get to Susans street.Unfortunately the cab had been almost ten minutes late getting to his apartment,
so he was just anxiously hoping that theyd be able to pick up Susan and get to the
restaurant in time. Despite his much unneeded anxiety, though, he tried to remainconfident that he and Susan would have a good night together. Hed done his utmost and
spared no expense for their date, after all. Something was always bound to go wrong,
and if a late taxi was it he could accept it.
That notion, however, was tested when the driver drove right past Susans street.

That was the turn! Peter said loudly, looking at the sign. Excuse me! He
said to the driver. You missed the turn! It was back there!
It was? The driver responded in a thick Russian accent. No, it couldnt havebeen.
It was! I saw it! Peter retorted. Please turn around!
But unfortunately turning around was impossible. They were in line for a lightwith at least forty cars piled in around them.
Sorry sir, the driver said, I cant turn around now. But I will as soon as I can, I
promise. I just dont know my way around the city too well yet.You what? Peter asked, horrified.
Im new to the job, the man clarified. This is my second week in town.
Peter, once again, was horrified. The one night in his life he needed a reliable taxi
driver and he got one fresh off the boat. But knowing that he couldnt change it now, he just sat back in his seat, going
insane with worry.
Susan was relieved when finally, nearly fifteen minutes after their planned
meeting time, Peter got to her apartment. Truthfully, though, she was so overjoyed to seePeter that she didnt even care about his tardiness.
Susan could tell that Peter was flustered as he got out of the car and walked overto her. But then, before either of them could even say hello, Peter looked at Susan and
stopped dead in his tracks, absolutely stunned by her beauty.
Susan was tall, slender, and overall looked like she could easily moonlight as a
supermodel. She had on a fitted, orange dress that came down to slightly above herknees. And, as usual, she had on light makeup which only served to accentuate her
natural gorgeousness and cold blue eyes. Peter couldnt tell if she had lip stick on or not,
but either way her lips were a perfect, beautiful shade of pink.Peter, meanwhile, was in his mid twenties and in the best shape of his life. He
wasnt a short man, but then wasnt what most would consider tall either. He had short,
tidy brown hair, a defined jaw line, and overall was very handsome. But despite that fact,he felt completely out of his league as he looked at his date.
Hi, Peter said to her in awe. You look absolutely angelic, he choked out,
hardly able to speak.
Thank you, Susan responded, unable to help but blush at such an unexpectedcompliment. Did you have trouble finding my building or something? She asked a
second later.
Yeah, sorry, Peter answered, his anxiety making its way to the surface again.Well Im just glad youre here now, Susan assured him brightly, hoping to
lessen his stress. We should probably get going though, she added, checking her
watch.Right, of course, Peter said, leading her to the car. We have about the newest
cab driver in the entire city. Seriously, he came right out and said hes only been here for
two weeks.Should be interesting then, Susan said brightly as Peter opened her door and she
got in the car.
Peter soon joined her inside and after telling the driver where to go they were off.

The driver seemed sure that he knew where Guginos was, to Susans relief.
Peter, however, was more skeptical of the cabbys confidence. But soon enough he
forgot his doubts as he and Susan talked about how excited they were to eat at Guginos, before swapping stories about their different experiences withLes Miserables. So when
the driver proudly announced that they had arrived at Guginos, they were both shocked
that the time had gone by so quickly. Then the pair looked out the window and couldnt believe what they saw.
They were sitting in front of a small restaurant called Guginos Pizza.
This isnt the right place, Peter said, unable to believe what was happening. Its not? The driver asked, confused. Ive eaten here before. They have the
best pizza youll ever have.
Alright, thank you, Peter said, paying the man before he and Susan left the cab.
Then, feeling hed done a good job, the driver left.Let me call the real restaurant. Maybe they can hold the table, Peter said,
dialing the number.
The call was quick and before Susan knew it Peter was off of the phone.
So? She asked. They gave our table away, Peter answered his dismay and frustration showing
on his face.Well I know it isnt the real Guginos, but how about some pizza then? Susan
suggested brightly, pointing to the small restaurant with a smile. In that moment she
wouldnt have cared if theyd been driven to Jersey as long as she and Peter were
together.Seriously? Peter asked.
Why not? It is the best pizza the cabby ever had, Susan replied.
Susans unwavering spirit and perfect humor cut through Peters disappointment, forcing even him to smile.
Well were slightly over dressed for this place, but lets do it, he said, leading
Susan inside.Guginos Pizza had the token pizzeria look. The tables and booths were covered
in red and white checkered table cloths. The walls were covered in black and white
pictures of the owners, the history of the store, and autographs from celebrities that had
eaten there. But despite its seemingly grand history, Guginos Pizza was nearly empty. After ordering their pepperoni pizza the couple had their pick of tables. They quickly
chose a corner booth.
You know, Susan began, there was a little pizza place like this back home. Iused to go there all the time and have a slice while I would read about Peru, or Egypt, or
England.
So have you always dreamed of traveling then? Peter asked.Yeah, Susan answered. When I was little my parents would tell me about the
world, and we all dreamed of traveling together, she said slightly sadly as she
remembered, her hand moving up to her locket. After a moments pause she swallowedhard to suppress her emotions and continued. I have some extended family in the Czech
Republic, so I want to go there. And other than that I dont know. I want to go
anywhere, and everywhere, she finished.
And you can cross New York off of that list now, Peter observed.

I sure can. Thats one of the reasons I transferred here, honestly. I figured I
could see New York while I saved up some money, and then when I had enough Id quit
Scotts Paper and go wherever I wanted. That sounds amazing.
I sure hope it will be, Susan agreed.
So where are you from originally? Peter asked. I mean I know youtransferred from Scranton, but you told me before that youre from a small town in
California.
Yeah, Susan said with a nod, her face falling slightly. I doubt youve everheard of it. Im from Haley, in Northern California.
Is that where your family still is?
No, she answered sadly, looking away from Peter and down to the table
uneasily. Both of my parents are dead.Im sorry. That has to be hard, Peter said, feeling like he reopened an old
wound and wishing he could empathize with her more. He had no idea what a loss like
that felt like, though, so he left it at that.
Its fine, Susan responded reassuringly. It was a long time ago, she added.Thankfully they didnt have to wait too long for their pizza and before they knew
it a thin, beautifully crispy, white cheesed, red pepperonied pizza was steaming on thetable.
Both of them were extremely hungry so they dug in immediately. And, even
though the cabby had technically screwed up their first date, Peter had to admit that it
was some pretty amazing pizza. So what about you? Susan asked finally back to her bright self. You told me
before youre from Ohio, but thats all youve told me.
True, Peter said. I dont really know what else to say, though. Its not all thatinteresting, honestly.
Well where in the state did you live?
Northern Ohio, Peter responded, not too far from the lake. It was great. Go amile north from my house and youd be at the water. We could even see Canada on a
clear day from some spots.
Did you go sailing all the time?
No, Peter answered. I wish we did. We were always more outdoorsy ratherthan part of the sailing crowd, though. My parents even moved into a cabin a few years
ago.
Did you guys ever go hunting then? Or were you just campers?Wed camp a lot, and my dad and I would go out hunting sometimes, Peter
replied. That was always more his thing than mine, though.
You dont like it?I like aspects of it, Peter answered. Being outdoors, away from the world is
great. And the stalk, trying to read the signs animals left behind to find them, is
something Ive always loved too. Its just the actual killing part that Ive never been ableto get past, he said, shaking his head. I killed my first and last deer when I was 12, and
I guess I just didnt like the way it made me feel, he explained. After I fired I got this
rush of adrenaline that just amped me up like never before. When I calmed down and I

looked at the animal I killed, so beautiful and majestic, it really sunk in that I was the
reason it was dead. I had killed it. And that justit just upset me.
That does sound like it would be hard, Susan said supportively. They fell silent for a moment as they took a few more bites of food, until Susan
spoke again.
I take it youre you a good shot then? She asked.I think so.
With bow, rifle, or shotgun?
All of the above, Peter answered, shocked by Susans level of interest andknowledge.
Oohh, a real marksman then, she remarked, impressed.
If you want to call me that, Peter said, suddenly feeling bashful.
Ive always preferred hand to hand combat, Susan admitted casually.Wow. Really? He asked in shock.
Oh yeah, she affirmed with a nod. My parents thought it was important for me
to learn how to protect myself, so from an early age they had me in karate, tai kwon do,
you know, that kind of thing. Just a couple years ago I became a second degree blackbelt in karate, and Im learning krav maga now.
So remind me never to get on your bad side, Peter joked, impressed by herfighting prowess.
Dont worry, I dont think you have to worry about that, Susan assured him,
chuckling. Together wed make a pretty impressive action team though.
Yeah, Peter agreed. We almost make up a whole Chuck Norris. That seemed to amuse Susan, and she was soon laughing as if she was watching a
Muppet movie.
They continued eating and having a fantastic conversation until they couldnt takeanother bite. Then, at last, it was time to go to the theater.
Thankfully they were quickly able to find a competent cab driver and were on
their way in no time. They made it there without any more mishaps, and before long they were in their
seats, towards the front of the theater.
Peter was immediately blown away by the wonderful music and acting. But that
was all overshadowed when about a half hour in Susan reached over and grabbed hishand. Peter glanced over at her, a smile on his face, pleased to see Susan smiling back at
him.
I had a great time tonight, Susan said to Peter later that night when he droppedher off at her apartment.
So did I, Peter replied. We should do it again sometime, he said, wanting to
punch himself in the face for such a clich line. And soon, Susan added eagerly.
They stood there for a moment, just looking at each other, until Peter leaned in
and kissed Susan on the cheek. But then, to Peters horror, an awkward silence fell. You know, I dont think that will do, Susan said a second later.
Peters heart sunk. The last thing he wanted to do was overstep his bounds, and it
looked like that was exactly what hed done.
Susan, Im- he began. That was all he got out.

For at that moment, Susan leaned in and kissed Peter right on the lips.
He was barely able to believe what was happening and never wanted it to end.
But finally, after what seemed like forever and yet far too short a time, Susan broke thekiss.
Goodnight Peter, she said, smiling from ear to ear.
Goodnight Susan, Peter responded, smiling just as wide. With that Susan went back into her apartment. As soon as the door was closed
she reached up and touched her lips, in utter joy and shock over what shed just done.
Susan didnt know how long shed been on the floor when she finally got up. She
didnt really care, though. She didnt care about much considering the wave of emotion
that had just washed over her. Part of her wanted to just remain on the floor, to stay there
until dehydration or starvation or the jaws of a zombie came to deliver her from thetorture that was now her existence. The only reason she didnt, the only reason she stood
up, was because she knew Peter would have wanted it.
Feeling as hollow and numb as one of the undead, Susan walked over to the
counter and grabbed a map from one of the displays. She was slightly surprised to findthat she was in North Dakota, as she and Peter had been captured in Colorado, but she
didnt give it much thought. Instead she just put the map in her bag and set out to findsomewhere to spend the night.
Two hours later Susan was nestled in a house just off of the highway, in an
upstairs bedroom. Shed barred the front door with a couch, and the bedroom door with a
chair. So completely secure, she choked down some of the food shed taken earlier. After she was done eating she crawled into bed, the simple box spring mattress
feeling plush and heavenly after what felt like an eternity of sleeping on the cold ground.
The days when she slept on a mattress like that every night felt like a lifetime ago. Shednever truly appreciated it back then, as she hadnt really known anything different, but
even with her new perspective she was unable to enjoy it. Without Peter everything just
felt worthless.Remembering him and trying not to melt down as she had earlier, she pulled out
his old pocket watch and gazed down at it. Clay had given it to Peter before his death. It
was a family heirloom, passed down from father to son for four generations. It had once
been carefully cared for, just as pristine as the day it was first purchased, but now it wasdead and charred from flames. Susan found it in the kidnappers camp, next to a pile of
burned corpses that were almost completely indistinguishable from each other. She
didnt know which body was Peters, but from the timepiece knew it had to be theresomewhere.
As she looked at the watch, though, she was surprised to find that she was not
only reminded of Peter, but Clay and Janet as well. And there, lying all alone in a housethat meant absolutely nothing to her, she couldnt help but think back to what she and
Peters family once had together.
Their existence, while tense at times and quite different than their life had beenbefore the outbreak, had still been relatively happy and comfortable. Even before the end
of the world Clay, ever the soldier, tried to be prepared for anything that could possibly
happen. And, while a zombie apocalypse had been the least of his worries while he made
his preps, they were suitable nonetheless. Because of him they still had food, clean

water, warm shelter, and even incremental electricity. To make matters even more
peaceful, their isolated location in the forest meant that they barely saw any zombies after
the initial outbreak, and those they did see she and Peter took care of easily.Susans eyes filled with tears as she remembered. She couldnt help but think of
how Clay, Janet, and Peter were the only reasons she was still alive. Sure, shed been
excellent at hand to hand combat before going to the cabin, but during her stay theretheyd taught her the skills to actually survive in the post-apocalyptic world she now
lived in. They taught her about hunting, gathering, purifying water, and it was under
Peter and Clays patient instruction that shed finally become proficient at using a gun.Beyond all that, though, Susan fondly and sadly remembered how the cabin had
been a place of love for everyone there. From the moment she and Peter first arrived
Susan could tell that Clay, Janet, and Peter were extremely close and enjoyed being
together. Even the outbreak hadnt been able to dampen the affection they had for eachother. And, the longer Susan stayed with them all and got to know Peters parents, the
more she became part of that affection and love as well. Soon she started seeing Clay
and Janet not only as Peters parents, but as her family as well. Clay and Janet treated her
like a daughter, and she loved them like parents in turn.I cant do this right now, she finally said to herself, shaking her head as tears
began to fill her eyes. Not wanting to lose control again considering how shed actedearlier, she put Peters pocket watch back into her pocket. I guess I should get some
sleep, she then said to herself.
But even though shed put Peters watch away and forced her eyes closed, she
couldnt keep herself from thinking back to the cabin. Lying there alone, Susan wouldhave given anything to just be back there with Peter, Clay, and Janet. She missed those
days, the days when she was still happy, more than anything, especially now that she
didnt see how she could ever be happy again. But she was soon reminded, not all of her memories in the cabin were pleasant.
The zombies had ruined their blissful existence there the same way theyd ruined
everything and everyone she loved. So even as she tried to make her mind go blank, tears began to silently fall down her cheeks as she remembered.
Chapter 3
Four Weeks After The Outbreak
I love it out here, Peter remarked as he stood by the window, keeping watch forany zombies. Its peaceful, almost like we could stay here and forget about whats
happening in the outside world. Like we could just stay here and wait it all out.
Susan, who up until a few seconds before had been sharpening her machete, looked up at Peter and smiled.
Thats not too bad of a thought, she admitted. Id take that to the alternative.
Same. I mean look at it out there! Peter said, motioning Susan over to thewindow. She joined him and had to admit that the world outside the cabin was indeed
absolutely gorgeous.
The woods were quiet and beautiful. The leaves were changing and fluttering to
the ground, veiling it in a blanket of bright fall colors, hiding the green grass and layers

of pine needles. There was a chilly north wind blowing the leaves around and beckoning
for the couple to go outside and enjoy it. It wasnt the kind of wind that bit and cut
through coats like icy knives, making one shiver, it was the kind that invigorates aperson, gently kissing cheeks as one breathes in the cool fall air eagerly and happily.
My dad definitely got the best job today, Peter remarked. He gets to be out on
such a wonderful day.Its not like its a leisure trip though. He has to get us carnivores some meat,
Susan reminded him lightly.
I know, Peter replied. Just standing here looking out the window seems likesuch a waste of time, though. I would much rather be out there training, especially
considering that with just a little more practice Ill be as good a fighter as you, he added
jokingly.
Maybe if you had ten more years and direct intervention from God, Susanjested back. Youre learning quickly, though. Youre already a much better fighter than
when we started. Those zombies wont know what hit them the next time they come
around here.
With that they fell silent for a moment, just staring out the window, until Petersighed thoughtfully.
If Im to be completely honest, though, as much as I love the forest and thiscabin I cant help but miss New York. I know its been obliterated and well never be
able to live there again, but I still just wish that things would get back to normal. I wish
that we could get back to normal.
Yeah, Susan replied. To an extent she agreed with Peter. It was strange tothink about how quickly and drastically the world had changed. But even so she didnt
think it was a bad thing that their lives would never be like they were before. Yes, she
wished that people werent eating each other. And yes she wished that all the people sheknew hadnt died. But the outbreak had also shown her that any second could be her last.
Now that she was faced with that fact, never again did she want to waste her time doing
something so menial as working in a paper company. She wanted to take advantage ofwhat little time she had left. She didnt dare say any of that out loud, though.
They stood there looking out the window for a few more seconds. Then, without
another word, Susan returned to the couch and resumed sharpening her machete. So as it
had been for much of the morning, the cabin was once more filled with a peacefulsilence.
The cabin was large, and like most was made of huge trees stacked together like
Lincoln Logs. It was two stories high, had a red tile roof and was built on a hill. Half thehouse was at the top of it, but the other half was raised from the ground by supports to
keep it level. For that reason they had a great view of the gorgeous forest surrounding
them.Peter was just starting to yawn and thinking about grabbing a chair when gunshots
rang out, renting the peaceful air and jolting him from his near stupor.
Janet and Susan, meanwhile, started and ran over next to Peter to look out thewindow, expecting to see the cabin under siege.
Its fine guys, Peter assured them. Dad probably just got us some dinner.
A second later four more shots rang out.
Big dinner, Susan remarked, drawing her pistol and machete.

Yeah, lets get ready for anything just in case. Mom, lock the door.
But your father! Janet said, extremely worried.
I know, Peter replied, remaining perfectly calm. Ill keep an eye out for himand when he comes well let him in.
Janet obeyed a second later and so began the waiting. Peter, tapping his foot
nervously against the floor, had his rifle ready and a window open just in case hed needto shoot.
He probably just ran into a small horde, he said, trying to reassure the women
and himself. Im sure its nothing he cant handle after years of fighting the Commies. They fell silent, everyone listening for more shots. They didnt have to wait long.
Four more shots rang out and then, a moment later, Peter saw Clay running
towards the cabin. To Peters horror, his father was being followed by over fifteen
zombies.Hes coming! Peter exclaimed, taking a few shots at the zombies before
running to the door. He quickly unlocked it and threw it open, calling to Clay. Come
on dad! Hurry!
The zombies werent moving fast, but neither was Clay. He wasnt younganymore, and while he was going as fast as he could hed already been running for
almost a mile. He was out of breath, tired, and just doing everything he could to keepgoing.
Clay made it inside just in time. For the zombies were only ten feet away when
Peter slammed the door shut and locked it.
Someone grab a chair! He shouted, thinking he could use it to brace the door.Susan grabbed one and jammed it under the knob just as the zombies began to
pound away.
Dad, are you alright? Peter asked, turning around.Clay was bent over, panting, sweaty, and his right arm was bloody.
Clay, are you alright? Janet asked, going over next to him and putting her hand
on his back. No, Im not, Clay answered. By that time hed caught his breath, so he stood
up and drew back his sleeve until they all saw a clear bite mark.
They just started crowding me, Clay explained. One of them came up behind
me as I was shooting and distracted me enough for another to bite.Peter, Susan, and Janet were horrified. Before the radios had gone dark the news
people began explainig how the infection was spread. Without exception the experts
agreed that it was spread by bites. You all have to get out of here. Just leave me, Clay said.
Thats going to be harder than you think, Susan responded, looking outside.
Zombies were still coming out of the trees, noticing the humans standing at thewindow. At that sight they went from aimless wanderers to determined predators,
surrounding the cabin as they joined their allies.
What are we going to do? Janet asked. We have to make it to the car, Peter observed. We can all fit in there.
You three go, Clay said. Ill try to hold them off.
No, that isnt going to work, Susan retorted. Theyre crowded all around the
house. Theres no way well be able to get past them.

Well first things first, Janet interjected. Before we do anything else we need to
take care of your father.
Peter and Susan supported Clay until they were in the living room and thenplopped him down on one of the couches. Janet then began to search the closets as fast
as she could, trying to find first aid supplies to help her husband.
Janet, Clay began, calling to her softly, dont bother. We can help you Clay, Janet responded, her eyes welling up with tears.
You cant now, Clay told her, wincing in pain. All you three can do is help
yourselves.Janet began weeping and Peter, to keep from breaking down himself, went over to
the window, trying to think of some way to get out of the situation they were in.
How are you doing? Susan asked tenderly, holding back tears as she grabbed
Peters hand.Im fine, Peter lied. I just need to stay focused so I can get us all out of here.
Susan accepted the answer, not wanting to press the matter in light of everything
that was happening. She just stood by Peter, holding his hand, and joined him in trying to
find a weak spot in the enemy ranks. The zombies were crowding around the house so thickly that they were pressed
up against each other. They were reaching up at Peter and Susan, who they saw in thewindow, gnashing their teeth as if they were baby chicks waiting for their mother to feed
them. Others were still coming out of the trees, thickening their lines even further.
Peter saw all of this and couldnt see any way to break through as it was. There
were just too many zombies and too few humans. And, as he knew and was trying toforget, soon they would be out Clay as well.
Lets see, Peter began, thinking aloud. The car is over there, he said, pointing
down the twenty foot drive to the car. To get there we need to wade through that, hesaid, pointing at the zombies.
Unless you dont wade through it, Clay called from the other side of the room.
What do you mean? Peter asked, turning to his father.Think about how battles used to be fought, Clay explained, sounding even
weaker than before. People lined up to fight. And what did their enemies do? They
tried to break the lines. Break up the lines and you wont have to deal with them as a
unit. Youll be dealing with them as individuals.Peter began to think of how they could break up the mass of zombies below. The
zombies didnt feel fear, so they wouldnt run away as armies in the past had when death
rained down around them. But then he thought of another way. A way armies had usedbefore. And that was the bait tactic. If they were to entice the zombies with some kind
of lure Peter was sure that the mindless monsters would chase after it. The only problem
was that the zombies only wanted one thing: human flesh. He was torn between two impossible decisions. They could either all try to fight
their way out despite the fact that that would almost certainly fail, or they could offer one
of their own as bait for the zombies, knowing that person would most likely face anawful, agonizing death.
But as Clay knew all about military history and was a much better tactician than
Peter, he soon came to the same conclusion. And for him the choice was easy.

Offer me up as bait, he said. Use me as a distraction so the rest of you can get
out of here.
Dad we cant, Peter said, almost losing it just at the thought.Clay please, Janet begged.
Its the only way! Clay exclaimed loudly. I am going to die no matter what
and I am not going to let you three die with me!There are still problems, dad, Peter began, trying to poke holes in the plan.
Like how are we going to get out of the house? We cant exactly use the front door!
That closet, Clay said pointing. Theres a rope ladder in there. Go up to thesecond floor and use it. That will get you out of here safely.
But, Peter began desperately, trying to think of some other way. There didnt
seem to be one, but he couldnt give up. Janet, meanwhile, had listened to Clay and got
the rope ladder out of the closet.I wish I had some grenades, Clay remarked, wincing in pain from his wound.
Those would be perfect for holding these things off.
We could always make Molotov cocktails, Susan suggested.
To that Clay smiled and even Peter had to admit it seemed like a good idea. Firewould definitely slow the zombies down.
Sounds good to me, Clay said, suddenly more chipper. We just need to make sure we dont burn this place down around us, Peter
advised.
Lets get the stuff together then, Janet said.
With that they went around the cabin, hurriedly finding all the bottles they couldas Peter got a can of fuel. Then they filled the bottles with gas and stuffed them with
rags.
You all are going to let me handle those, Clay said a few minutes later, standingup. He looked wobbly, but was solid for the most part.
Dad, sit back down, Peter ordered strongly.
No, Clay argued. Look guys, I can feel that I dont have that much time left,so you all go upstairs and get ready to leave. Ill make as much noise as I can and then
when the zombies are distracted you take off.
Dad you cant! Peter pleaded.
I am not going to let you all die for my sake! Clay responded, getting slightlyirritated. I am a dead man either way! Let me do this for you all before I go, he said
softer.
Peter, Janet began, laying a hand on her sons shoulder, your fathers right, she said, tears running down her cheeks. We need to let him do this.
Fine, Peter conceded, tears beginning to fall from his own eyes. Were leaving
you with some guns though, Peter said, handing Clay a shotgun, a .44, and a rifle.I wouldnt have it any other way, Clay remarked with a smile.
However at that moment, to all of their terror, they heard the clear sound of wood
cracking.Susan ran over and looked down the hall, horrified to see that the zombies were
breaking through the front door.
We dont have much time! She called out.

Lets to do this then! Clay said. Come here, all of you. When they were
close he gave them quick hugs. I love you son.
I love you too, Peter said. Here, take this, Clay said to Peter, handing him the pocket watch that had
become a family heirloom.
Peter, overcome with emotion, couldnt respond. You take care of him, Susan, Clay ordered, turning to her. And take care of
yourself. Ive really come to love you like a daughter these last couple months.
Thank you, Susan responded, her eyes welling up with tears. I love you tooClay.
Then, finally, Clay moved onto his wife.
Janet fell into her husbands arms, clinging to him desperately. Clay leaned down
and kissed her.I love you honey, he said, finally starting to cry himself.
I love you too, Janet somehow choked out through her sobs.
More noises of breaking wood came from the door.
Now go! He shouted to them, lighting one of the moltov cocktails. He stoodthere facing the door like an action hero, a moltov cocktail in one hand and a pistol in the
other. The other three ran up the stairs as Clay started shooting.
Lets hurry up and get this ready! Peter said, looking for a place to anchor the
rope ladder.
Suddenly they heard the front door break, and the house was soon filled with themoans of the undead.
As Peter finally anchored the ladder they heard a bottle shatter, and the contents
swoosh into flame. Then, right after, they heard Clay shouting angrily at the zombies, still fighting hard.
Peter checked out the window to see if the zombies outside were moving away.
Sure enough they were all pushing each other as they tried to get to the front of the housewhere Clay was. But still, the path to the car was far from secure.
Ill go down first and cover your descents, Peter said the two women.
No, let me go down first, Peter, Susan suggested.
Its too dangerous! He retorted strongly. And so the strongest hand to hand fighter should cover the others! Susan
argued.
Peter knew they didnt have time to keep debating. And, he had to admit, Susanhad a point. So while he absolutely hated the idea of putting Susans life in jeopardy, he
set aside his masculine protector instincts in the name of reason.
Fine, go, he said. Just please be careful.I will be, she replied, stepping out of the window.
Susan made it down the rope ladder quickly and immediately saw that things were
not as clear as she had hoped. Most of the zombies were gone, heading off to the front ofthe house, but there were still stragglers. And those zombies, as soon as they saw Susan,
moaned and headed her way.
Susan knew that if she fired her gun it would attract the zombies from the front of
the house, which would threaten Peter and Janets descent, so she drew one of her smaller

knives and threw it. The blade sailed straight into one of the zombies skulls, killing it.
Then she pulled out her machete, ready for the rest of the group.
Peter, knowing that Susan would soon be threatened, wasted no time beforemounting the ladder and starting on his way down.
Janet, meanwhile, was standing guard in the bedroom. The door was closed and
locked but she knew Clay wouldnt last much longer. And when he finally fell she wassure the zombies would make their way upstairs. There was no way they hadnt heard
Susan and Peter argue.
A moment later the first zombie reached Susan, and as she had trained with somefalse katanas when she was learning how to fight, she quickly split the zombies skull
open, turning to the next one.
Peter continued down the ladder as fast as he could. He saw Susan easily take out
four zombies, fighting like hed never seen before. But to his dismay, he noticed a groupof eight headed right for her. He knew she was good, but he didnt know if she was that
good.
At that moment, however, they all heard an awful shout of pain come from the
other side of the house. Then the gunshots from Clay stopped. Finally, after putting up avaliant and heroic defense, he had fallen.
Susan, hearing that happen but disciplined enough not to get distracted by eventhat awful event, just kept fighting.
Meanwhile, the group of eight was still coming towards her. She turned as they
came within ten feet of her, gearing up for the tough fight. Just as she killed the first
zombie Peter leapt beside her, hatchet in hand, taking down a walker of his own.Janet, meanwhile, was finally making her way down the ladder but as she wasnt
young anymore, she was having a hard time.
With only two zombies left in the group, Peter and Susan easily took care ofthem. Looking for more enemies, they turned around and were shocked by what they
saw.
With the distraction Clay had been providing gone the entire pack of monsters, easily a hundred strong, was now moving back to where the three remaining humans
were desperately trying to escape.
About fifteen of the zombies were on fire, their skin melting and filling the area
with an awful stench. Clay had done plenty of damage before he fell, but despite that themonsters still continued forward. At the same time the front of the house was burning,
threatening to engulf the entire area in flames. Between that and the zombies, Peter knew
they had to escape as soon as possible.Gun time! Peter exclaimed.
Susan grabbed a rifle and Peter seized a shotgun and then together they started
shooting. Zombies began to go down, but no matter how fast Peter and Susan fired theycouldnt kill enough of them.
As all that was going on Janet finally made it down. But as she went to step off
the ladder, the ropes shifted and she fell to the ground with a shout, twisting her ankle.Susan, who saw this happen, was horrified.
Peter! She shouted, starting to run over to help Janet.
Peter turned his head, seeing his mother on the ground, and hurried over to her.
Susan had lifted Janet to her feet, supporting her, when Peter finally got there.

Go start the car! He told Susan, handing her the keys. Susan obeyed and began
to run for it while Peter helped Janet hobble towards the vehicle.
In only a minute Susan had started the car and was turning around to pick themup. The zombies, however, were gaining on Peter and his mother fast.
Janet, who was on the left side, was in the direction the zombies were coming
from and Peter, his focus on making it to the car, didnt notice that a root was sticking outof the ground in his path. Peter tripped and both he and Janet fell to the ground.
The zombies immediately went after Janet and Peter, while he tried to quickly
recover so he could to help his mother, was too late. The zombies were already there andbit her.
Peter, in agonizing pain and blood rage, shouted and blasted away at the zombies
that dared come near his mother. Soon Janet was clear but she, like Clay, was a goner.
Go! Janet ordered, grabbing a gun and beginning to shoot at the advancingzombies.
Im not losing you too! Peter shouted feeling overcome with grief.
You already have! Janet retorted, crying. Make sure Susan doesnt lose you!
With that she continued shooting. At that moment Susan drove up next to Peter, throwing the passenger door open.
Get in! She yelled.Peter stood there for a second, watching his m
