Throughout the month of September, UA Nutrition Network schools will be celebrating the health benefits of fruits and vegetables. We encourage you to work with your administrators, teachers, and staff to join the celebration. Determine the ways you want to celebrate fruit and vegetable consumption and let the fun begin! Below are some ideas to help get you started. Morning Announcements: • Ask your principal to read nutrition tips about fruits and vegetables every day during morning announcements (we’ve included some in your event kit). • Have a student in each class read a fruit and veggie “fact of the day.” •Have your school nurse ask a weekly fruit and veggie trivia question and provide prizes to the first class who emails her the correct answer. Fruit and Veggie Challenges: UANN has provided fruit and veggie tracking posters for your school. Work with your point person and SHAC (if applicable) to decide the details of the challenge. Here are a few ideas: Classes compete to see which class can fill the chart first. • Classes compete to see which class can consume the most fruits and vegetables in a given time period • Classes can track their fruit and vegetable snacks to see how many healthy snacks they can bring and eat in a given time period. •Ask a team of teachers to compete against the students in a particular class. Ideas for integrating fruits and veggies in the classroom: • Encourage students to bring fruits and vegetables as snacks. As a class, track how many students bring these healthy snacks and compare the quantities from week to week. Use your student planners to track fruit and vegetable consumption, and calculate the percentage of students who ate fruits or vegetables at least 4 days in a given week. Track the types of fruits and vegetables students eat for snack or during lunch and create pie charts, bar graphs, and Venn diagrams. • Track the types of fruits and vegetables students eat, then research facts about the most and least popular choices. • Have students journal about their healthy snack experiences and describe what they liked. • Look up the nutrition facts and have students compare the nutrient content of the most and least popular fruits and Need more ideas?
