A passion for motorcycles and working with his handsis what made Dan Ballards upholstery hobby go outof control.

Of course, it isnt what Ballard wanted at the time as the then-20 year old dreamed of becominga famous DJ for radio or television. But a job as anovice upholsterer, a sewing machine he begrudg-ingly purchased with his dads encouragement, and aery passion for his work served as the catalysts fordeveloping this custom seat master. This year Bal-lard celebrates 20 years in the custom seat businesswith Bitchn Stitchn Inc., of Lakewood, Colo., alongwith his 40th birthday. Ballards is a brand that rep-resents quality and comfort for street and off-road

    motorcycles.

Twenty years ago Dan discovered his love for work-ing with his hands when he fell on hard times andfound himself begging for a job at a local upholsteryshop. As a novice upholsterer, he learned how to cre-ate works of art on the inside of automobiles.

It was shortly after he got the job when his dad en-couraged him to buy a sewing machine, an idea Danthought would be good only if every girl in Coloradoneeded her dress hemmed.

That sewing machine proved prophetic, and whileBallard didnt get the chance to hem all the girlsdresses, he does have a long line of customerswaiting for custom seats. His rst upholstery job, a1969 Camaro, was the rst automobile Ballard uphol-stered. After that, the developing master decided tostick with two wheels. At about the same time Ballarddiscovered his new hobby, motorcycle styles startedchanging and the tires started to get larger. But mo-torcycle seats did not change with the new designs.Couple that with Ballards passion for motorcycles ashe fell in love with his rst Harley, and Ballard decidedto start marketing his trade and build a temporarybusiness.

With each new job, Dan would drag his tools out

of his apartment and single-car garage to performthe tting work in his driveway. He would then takethe seat inside for nishing. But as business grew, his workspace seemed to shrink, and it wasnt longbefore Ballard moved his shop to Lakewood. Therehe hired Brian Backes, who grew up in the industryand whose upholstering credo includes a shop thatcatered to motor head celebrities such as Jay Leno;and Chris Bellum, who at 18 is a novice upholstererhimself but who Ballard said is l ight years ahead ofwhere he was when he rst started.

Its a trio made for riding, and the company hasproven that over and over again. So far Ballard and

Cowboy Cody and Johnny Pushrod may Live to Ride and Ride to Eat but forsome of us, theres more to life than food. A lot of riders I know travel great dis-tances to nd wonderful warm hot springs to soak their w eary bone-tired bodies.Roger and I are part of that crowd and in October, we took an unexpected rideto Thermopolis, WY. Unexpected, you say?

I had a Motor Maid District meeting to attend in WY. A stop at the Hot Springswas a good way to get Roger to head out of town with me.

Well, it was mid-October and riding to Thermopolis involves heading northwestout of Denver for about 450 miles. The day before we were scheduled to leave,we were still undecided about riding or maybe just taking the car. You knowhow those Rocky Mountain snowstorms can crop up suddenly this time of year.

Thursday, Oct 14 dawned so warm and sunny that we chose to ride our Harleysto the Hot Springs. I phoned ahead; the girls from Montana said the weatherwas not as nice up there. They were predicting a storm by Sunday and taking

the car. After a lengthy discussion, we decided to ride. Shoot, wed at least have3 good days to ride before returning on Sunday and we gured we could outridea storm coming in from the North, since wed be heading south.

Thermopolis, WY is home of the Worlds Largest Mineral Hot Spring and iswell known all over the world for its healing mineral waters. In past visits weveencountered Europeans and other foreigners out in the middle of no-where,enjoying the medicinal waters. The state pool is huge and great for familieswith kids to play in. The smaller, quieter, more sedate open-air pools across thestreet are nice for adults and medical patients. These are all paved with con-crete and bricks. We found them to be quiet and peaceful, very clean and wellkept, very worth the price of admission. The Hot Springs State Park locatednearby offers even more outdoor bathing opportunities.

This trip to Thermopolis, we visited a privately owned, giant outdoor hot pool.If you stay at the Fountain of Youth Country Inn, located in the middle of Ther-mopolis, or at their campground, 3 miles out of town, there is no extra chargefor using their hot pools. The setting here is rustic, more organic, with pinetrees, gravel, and mud. They also have a separate pool for families and a verylarge, hot outdoor pool for the other adults. This place was fun as there weresculptures and historical signs all over the place to look at and read about thefamous explorers Lewis and Clark and other famous visitors.

We had beautiful moonlight and good company to soak with this time. Thecampground had a small covered stage by the pool, already wired with a PAsystem. One of the owners came out and serenaded all the bathers with hisaccomplished guitar playing and singing. It was great fun, soothing and mellow.

Unfortunately, the Fountain of Youth hotel itself only met our minimum stan-

dards for cleanliness and friendliness, but we might give the campground a trynext time were going through on one of our biker-camping trips.

Boy, a biker just cant beat getting in a great motorcycle ride and a great hotmineral bath afterwards. Colorado, Wyoming and Montana have an abundanceof hot springs, both public and private. Hot springs provide a great escape fromthe winter doldrums, rejuvenating your body and soul. Winter is a great time tovisit and there are always deals to be found. More info: www.thermopolis.com

Our plan worked out! The ride home on Sunday was overcast, cool and windyuntil just south of the CO/WY border. We didnt freee too bad and made ithome just ne.

    HOLIDAY POEM

Twas the night before Christmas, And not until Spring

Would a motor be running, not even a Wing.

The bikes are all sleeping, theyre covered and warm,

Batteries are tended, nylon covers their form.

My Bros were all nestled down snug in their beds,

While visions of new chrome danced in their heads.

And I in my do-rag, bike jacket and boots

Out shoveling snow, and dreaming of scoots.

Then from the horizon there came such a clatter

My shovel I dropped, what could be the matter?

Away up the hill, I slogged through the snow

Looked up at the sky; whered all that noise go?

Then a throb from the heavens, like straight pipes so hearty

Gave Summers good thoughts, a loud bikers party.

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear

But a Hog Ultra Classic, Red trailer in rear!

With a little old rider, so lively and quick,

I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

More rapid than a V-Rod his Ultra came on,

    And he whistled, and shouted, and sang out this song;

Now, Springer! Now, Dyna! On Ultra and Softail! Now Vulcan! Now Injun! On Victry and Triumph!

To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall!

Now RIDE away! RIDE away! RIDE away all!

As small bikes that from the semis do y,

When they meet with the air blast, mount to the sky,

So up to the house-top that Ultra it ew

With a trailer of goodies, and ole St. Nick too

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof

The rumble and thunder of pipes that gave proof.

I ran in the house, boots thumping around,

And in came St. Nick all bearded and round

Dressed all in black leather, from do-rag to boot

    His chaps were all tarnished with road grime and soot;

A T-bag of goodies hed ung on his back

And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack

His shades -- how they twinkled! his do-rag how scary!

With chains intertwined, through skulls that were cherry!

His droll little mouth had done many a row,

So the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,

The smoke had a strange smell; it gave him relief.

He had a broad face and a large fat beer belly

That shook when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly

He was tattooed and plump, a right jolly old rider,

So I offered a cold brew, thought what could be righter?

A wink of his eye as he downed that cold beer,

Gave me to know I had nothing to fear

He spoke not a word, but went straight to my ride

And xed it with Chrome, Horsepower and Pride

And giving the peace sign with bikers good cheer

Strode off to his Ultra rumbling near

He sprang on the saddle, his gloves on the bars

A wheelie he threw; then off towards the stars

I heard him exclaim, as my chest swelled with pride

    MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL,

AND TO ALL A GOOD RIDE

A man comes into the ER and yells . . .My wifes going to have her baby in

egan to take off her underwear. Suddenly I noticed that there were several

abs and I was in the wrong one.

t the beginning of my shift I placed a stethoscope on an elderly and slightly

eaf female patients anterior chest wall. Big breaths,. . .I instructed. Yes,

hey used to be,. . replied the patient.

One day I had to be the bearer of bad news when I told a wife that her

usband had died of a massive myocardial infarct. Not more than ve

minutes later, I heard her reporting to the rest of the family that he had died

As a new, young MD doing his residency in OB, I was quite embarrassed

when performing female pelvic exams... To cover my embarrassment I had

nconsciously formed a habit of whistling softly. The middle-aged lady upon

whom I was performing this exam suddenly burst out laughing and further

mbarrassing me. I looked up from my work and sheepishly said. . . Im

orry. Was I tickling you? She replied with tears running down her cheeks

rom laughing so hard . . . No doctor but the song you were whistling was .

A nurse was on duty in the Emergency Room when a young woman with

urple hair styled into a punk rocker Mohawk, sporting a variety of tattoos,

nd wearing strange clothing, entered. It was quickly determined that

he patient had acute appendicitis, so she was scheduled for immediate

urgery. When she was completely disrobed on the operating table, the staff

oticed that her pubic hair had been dyed green and above it there was a

urgeon wrote a short note on the patients dressing, which said, Sorry . . .

A father put his 3 year old daughter to bed, told her a story and listenedo her prayers which she ended by saying: God bless Mommy, God bless

Daddy, God bless Grandma and goodbye Grandpa. The father asked, Why

id you say goodbye Grandpa? The little girl said, I dont know daddy, it just

eemed like the thing to do. The next day grandpa died. The father thought

was a strange coincidence. A few months later the father put the girl to

ed and listened to her prayers, which went like this: God bless Mommy,

God Bless Daddy and goodbye Grandma. The next day the grandmother

ied. Holy s***! thought the father, this kid is in contact with the other side.

Several weeks later when the girl w as going to bed the dad heard her say:

God bless Mommy and goodbye Daddy. He practically went into shock. He

ouldnt sleep all night and got up at the crack of dawn to go to his ofce. He

was nervous as a cat all day, had lunch and watched the clock. He gured if

he could get by until midnight he would be okay. He felt safe in the ofce, so

instead of going home at the end of the day he stayed there, drinking coffee,

    looking at his watch and jumping at every sound. Finally, midnight arrived;

he breathed a sigh of relief and went home. When he got home his wife said

Ive never seen you work so late, whats the matter? He said I dont want

to talk about it; Ive just spent the worst day of my life. She said, you think

you had a bad day, youll never believe what happened to me. This morning

A guy walked into the local welfare ofce to pick up his check. He marched

straight up to the counter and said, Hi.. You know...., I just HATE drawing

welfare. Id really rather have a job. The welfare clerk behind the counter

said, Your timing is excellent. We just got a job opening from a very wealthy

old man who wants a Chauffeur and bodyguard for his beautiful daughter.

Youll have to drive around in his 2011 Mercedes-Ben CL, and he will

supply all of your clothes. Because of the long hours, m eals will be provided.

Youll also be expected to escort the daughter on her overseas holiday trips.

This is rather awkward to say but you will also have as part of your job

assignment to satisfy her sexual urges as the daughter is in her mid-20s

and has a rather strong sex drive. The guy, just plain wide-eyed, said,

Youre bullshittin me! he welfare clerk said, Yeah, well ... You started it.

BAGGER BUILT FOR SPEED RECORDry and Pics By Tcs By Sam Wills, Racing Innovations

o, Dog. Go! written by PD Eastman, Was one of my favoritedrens books as a child. Little did I know, that years later, Id beeating that saying over and over in my head as I drove to a mo-ycle photo shoot in Oklahoma City. I was headed to do a shoot

a bike built by Racing Innovations for Big Dog Motorcycles andS Motors. Sam Wills, a former motorcycle racer, had made upmind that he could build a bagger motorcycle that could go overmph, crushing the world record. In doing so, it was a natural forto share this idea with Big Dog Motorcycles and S&S since Samself, rides the Big Dog Bulldog Bagger.watched this bike being built over the summer. It was interestingatch a regular street bike turn into a mad dog on a chain, readyurst out and eat the world! And that she did!am built the bike with the help of Racing Innovations builders,un Norris and Delvin Clark. Before he could try the recordonneville Salt Flats, he took it to Sturgis for its unveiling andlay. I saw it there with the Big Dog Motorcycles display where

ny a dreamy eyed rider salivated over it. Mid-week, Sam pulledof there and headed to the Salt Flats to meet up with the crew,un, Delvin and Bruno.e shared the many challenges which the Salt Flats present whichmed nearly endless as he described them. First and foremost,

osts $600 to enter the motorcycle. Then Sam, the rider, had tocensed in order to set the record. After a couple steps up ined from 125 mph, he received his Class C 175 mph license. Hest wear full armored leathers with no openings for safety. Thene the rules, plenty of rules are mandated. T hey have a manda-118 octane leaded fuel that must be purchased from thek. The track itself is a feat to get to with nearly 20 miles

ween the pit area and the 3 mile track. Sad but true, crew went thru two Four Wheelers in pulling the bike tostarting line and had to resort to pulling it with the motor

me towards the middle of the week. They said it was ambarrassing at rst, but that being said,

y became very popular with the pitwards and people at the track.

see, there is NO shadeon the ats by the track socrew ocked to the shadend the motor home as it

ed to the starting gate, oftending out a few cold drinks.

ack to the high speedord! Its no easy street thereou must wait in long lines to get aon the track. Each person musth and clear the track ahead of your to your positioning. Now remembertrack is 3 miles long. Once he made as, he was timed at different intervals ontrack between the 1 and 3 mile marks.ween 1 and 2 miles and 2 and 3 miles.w, once you set in a speed, you have to gohe way back to the tower to get your ofciale sheet, then rush it to the pit area to register your time within

hour of your setting the time. Now, once this is done, they hadet them impound the bike overnight. They cannot touch it, motor

or anything. The track put a sealedcable on their heads, so they cant doa thing there either. Basically, theyhave to go wait til morning to rideagain. Once morning comes, theyhave to meet or exceed the samespeed they registered the day beforein order for it to become an ofcialrecord. The great news here is thatSam set the speed in the rst day at158.766 mph. The second day he hit162.60. The lower speed of 158.766

is the speed that was set to record. Sam said he wished he would have waited toset the rst time, but he was so anxious to simply get a record, that he went aheadand set it in at that as a starting point.

As for the 200 mph record, Sam feels that will be another day. He said the mosttrouble they had with the bike was getting and maintaining traction on the salt. Asyou could imagine, the salt track is very slick. He told me at one point the bike gotso squirrelly due to the slick surface, he wasnt sure he was going to make it to theend of the track in one piece. They then took as much weight off of the bike as theycould, including its ice water for cooling the motor. Although they had not set the200 mph record in the week they were there, they felt that they learned a lot abouttheir next once a year opportunity at Bonneville. At the time of this publication, theywere headed to the Texas Flying Mile, Goliard TX to see what shed do on a solid

paved track. I hope we get to report next month that they broke a 200 mph baggerrecord there.

Jeff Maschinos facebook blog says it all. A whole lotta love showered down onme in Loveland.

More than 130 brothers and sisters, friends and family came together October24th raising $8300 to benet Jeff Mascino, who was diagnosed with stage 4cancer earlier this year. Over 40 motorcycles participated in the poker run withstops at American Legion Posts and Veterans Clubs in LaPorte, Fort Collins andLongmont.

Jeff jokingly referred to the band as Slick Nuts and his mixed up friends as aspecial jam session with Slick DeSelms, Maschino on the drums and a few well-known local musicians brought the house down at the Loveland Veterans Club.

about cold? Earlier this year I wrote an article about hot weather riding; hey,

s summer. And now its getting cooler out; it will be winter in a couple of

hs. Some of us ride year-round (weather permitting) and some of us park

kes until it gets warmer again. But I know we are all tempted to get out and

when that cabin fever sets in, and if we give in to that temptation we may be

with riding in conditions that are colder than those to which we are usually

stomed. We should all know our limits, but sometimes we have to push the

ope in order to determine what those l imits are. And when we are determiningmits with regard to cold-weather riding we will nd ourselves chilled. Riding

our core body temperatures start to get lower is very problematic, so lets

bout what to do if that starts to happen, as well as how to avoid the situation

    ly.

or David Hough, in Procient Motorcycling, says, A core temperature

s too cold is called hypothermia. Only a couple of degrees below normal

erature can be life threatening. He also says that if you nd yourself

g this possibility, before you continue rushing off across the landscape

worsening conditions, pull over alongside the road, shut the engine down,

spend a few minutes focusing on the situation. OK, its cold and the wind

wling. But get out the map. Huddle down in the lee of the bike, warm your

rs on the engine, look at the options, and make a decision. Is it wise to keep

, or should you beat a retreat? In either case, youre already cold, so gure

hat you can do right away. In extreme cases, get out the cell phone and call

lp. In less extreme cases, you will need to add some insulation to help keep

body temperature up. (A helmet does a good job of insulating the head; a

ce helmet does the best job, because it keeps m ore of that cold wind off your

han an open helmet does. Personally I do not prefer full-face helmets, but I

one, and it is my choice for use in cold weather.) I have found that insulating

eck is critical to staying warm. I have several methods for this: I wear a

layer of poly-eece under my riding jacket, one that has a high zip-up collar. I

usually wear a bandanna around my neck. And in extreme cases I wear a eece

neck warmer made for me by a friend. I have seen ready-made products made

of leather, eece-lined leather and nylon in various motorcycle shops and on-

line, too. Check out www.riderwearhouse.com for some excellent gear choices.

Some folks use a balaclava; if you choose one of these, make sure it does not

interfere with the proper t of your helmet. Keeping your neck warm makes a huge

difference. But what about the rest of your body? Keep the wind off you as much

as possible. Probably your riding jacket is a wind block; but what about your legs?

Are they protected from the heat-robbing wind? Denim doesnt do the trick; chaps,

leather pants, or a riding suit are good options.

I always carry some type of insulated garments with me in my saddlebags or

tank bag when I venture out in winter, just in case. I now have a secret weapon,

one that I resisted for years: a heated vest. These things are the greatest (with

only one drawback, which Ill get to soon). Heated clothing plugs into your bikes

electrical outlet. (Some bikes have them built in and other bikes require them to

be added, which is a rather simple task. You will need to make sure that you bikes

electrical system can handle the extra load.) When it gets really cold I whip out the

electric vest, plug it in, and all of a sudden I am getting warm again. I have even

used this in summer, during long rides in a cool rain. They dont cost a lot of money

and they really work! Heated clothing is now available in more than just vests; I

already got heated gloves, and I am considering a heated jacket liner. These are

just like vests but have sleeves which are heated, too. But back to that drawback

I mentioned earlier: if something happens to the heated clothings circuitry, or to

the bikes electrical system, you are out of luck and your ace in the hole is no

longer useful. So its not a good idea to depend on this stuff when our lives can

be at stake. Ive never had this happen to me, but that doesnt mean it wont ever

occur I usually carry at least one extra insulated garment with me, the kind that

doesnt depend on electricity to work.

OK, now on to part two: how to avoid the situation entirely.

Obviously we can predict prior to departure if the weather is likely to be so cold that

it causes us problems. And we still have the choice to NOT RIDE. If we choose to

ride anyway we can plan our route to stay away from the places that are likely to

be extra cold, like higher elevations. We can plan to ride only in the mildest part of

the day. We can dress appropriately for conditions. We can plan frequent stops at

places where we can warm up.

In my experience I nd I can be comfortable riding when the temperatures dip

down to the higher 20s (Fahrenheit) - on my bike that has a windshield and fairing

and an electrical power source. But if I suspect their m ight be freezing rain or snow

along the route, I will leave the bike parked in the garage!

    Stay cool (but not COLD)!

The new study is not the rst time the research institute has suggested thatlegislative efforts to combat distracted driving are not affecting crash rates. InJanuary, the institute found virtually no change in crash frequency for states thathad enacted bans on handheld phone use.

Lund suggested multiple explanations, pointing to prior studies that found manydrivers are not heeding the texting ban, and may be lowering their hands andtaking their eyes off the road to text more discreetly.

Six of seven High Court judges have ruled that aspects of anti-bikie laws, whichprevent members of declared motorcycle gangs from associating with eachother, were unconstitutional as applied in South Australia.

Under SA laws passed last year to disband outlawed motorcycle clubs, the stateattorney-general can declare an organiation to be an illegal gang if satisedthat its members associate for serious criminal purposes and represent a risk topublic safety and order.

This is the second resounding legal defeat of this calculating and reactionarypiece of legislation, according to the United Motorcycle Council of New SouthWales, a coalition of motorcycle clubs organied to ght such discrimi natory ganglaws. This decision is an important milestone not just in terms of the ght againstthe South Australian legislation, but also against similar hastily adopted legislationof other states, said Ferret, UMC Chairman.

Other Australian states, including NSW and Queensland, have enacted similarlegislation but ofcials there believe that their l egislation differs in key respects.

To celebrate the Supreme Court decision, members of rival clubs came togetherfor a drink to toast a win against the very laws aimed at stopping them fromassociating. But South Australian Premier Mike Rann said the ruling was only a setback inhis self-declared war on bikies, saying he would keep coming at members of
