Whole School NewsTerm 4 Child Safety UpdateThe safety of every child is vitally important to us at Chairo. It may seem highly obvious, but it is something that I don’t think we can communicate too much. It is important to understand why we value child safety so highly as a school community. The obvious answer is because, throughout our society, the safety and protection of children is becoming increasingly important. This is a good thing, because children can be amongst the most vulnerable and easily abused within our communities.

But Chairo’s commitment goes deeper than just a response to a societal push. The first reason that we value the safety of children (in fact, all people) is because we believe they are made in God’s image. If we love and treasure God, then we will love and treasure anything that is made in His image. We should celebrate and respond to the uniqueness of each individual as an image-bearer of God. If we are serious about this, then we will be intentional about caring for each other.

The second reason that we are committed to caring for each other is because Jesus told us, as His followers, to do just that. In fact, Jesus went so far as to say that one of the greatest marks of us being Christians is the way that we love and care for each other.

There are two very simple ways every person within the Chairo community can contribute toward our commitment to ensure that all students at Chairo are safe.

Firstly, you could take another look at our updated Child Safety booklet that is available at chairo.vic.edu.au/pdf/Policies/Child-Safety-at-Chairo-Booklet.pdf or in Linc. This document sets out the commitment, responsibilities and processes that we undertake at Chairo.

Secondly, we would urge any parents, staff members or students who have concerns that the attitude or behaviours of any Chairo employee, volunteer, contractor or office holder may be harmful to a student to contact one of our Child Protection Officers to talk with them about the matter.

Our Child Protection Officers are based at each campus but you are free to contact any of those listed, regardless of which campus you or your children attend.

Even if you are unsure and would like some help to think the issue through, please make contact. Such conversations are not pleasant but this is part of the commitment that the school has made in its Statement of Commitment, and it takes support from all members of the school community to make this effective. Communications will be treated confidentially on a strictly need-to-know basis.

Obviously, whenever there are concerns that a child is in immediate danger, the police should be called immediately on 000.Simon Matthews, Executive Principal

Governance NewsAssociation General MeetingThere will be an Association general meeting on Thursday 9 November at the Drouin East Campus, commencing at 7.30 pm. One highlight of the evening will be the launch of SP17, Chairo’s new strategic plan that has been developed over the course of this year. All parents and staff members are encouraged to attend what will be an informative and enjoyable evening.

General Meeting Guest SpeakerThe guest speaker at our November general meeting will be Professor Darren Iselin, the President of CHC (Christian Heritage College), a multi-disciplinary college of approximately 900 students in Brisbane.

Darren has extensive leadership experience within Christian education, and has served in a plethora of principal and senior leadership roles and responsibilities within both higher education and schooling sectors.

He has also been involved in a diverse range of educational consultancy and professional development initiatives throughout the Asia-Pacific region, regularly presenting on a range of topics including: Christian worldview, faith formation, school culture, building leadership capacity, leadership, and faith-learning integration.

Certificate of Christian EducationCEN (Christian Education National) will be conducting a one-day engaging workshop at Maranatha Christian School on Saturday 28 October from 8.30 am to 3.30 pm for interested parents and staff members.

The cost of participating in the CCE (Certificate of Christian Education) course is $170, which includes lunch, refreshments and course materials. See the flyer attached to this newsletter for more details.

Our Board Chairman, Jeff Calway, has previously completed the CCE and said, ‘If you’ve ever wanted to articulate “why Christian schooling?” but have struggled to do so, this course comes to your aid!’

Those wishing to attend should register at cen.edu.au/index.php/all-events/victoria-events.

From the Senior ChaplainBe kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:32

All Chairo students will be looking at kindness in their homerooms during the first half of this term. In particular, we will be exploring three great biblical truths.

First, God Himself is kind. But when the kindness and love of God our Saviour appeared, He saved us… (Titus 3:4–5, see also Hosea 11:4, Luke 6:35, Romans 2:4 and Ephesians 2:7).

Kindness is part of who God is and how He relates to us. Kindness is not in any way a sign of weakness: God is not weak. But He is kind.

Second, God calls and equips His people to be kind. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23, see also Job 6:14, Proverbs 11:17 and 21:21, Micah 6:8, Zechariah 7:9, 1 Corinthians 13:4, Colossians 3:12 and 2 Timothy 2:24). In fact, Paul wrote that his kindness was evidence that his ministry was genuinely from God! (2 Corinthians 6:6).

As kindness is part of who God is and how He relates to us, so kindness should be part of who we are as God’s people, and how we relate to others.

Third, God’s kindness is to people who don’t deserve it. God doesn’t wait for people to demonstrate that they’re worthy of His kindness. Instead, God is kind to people who are not worthy or deserving in any way: God is kind to the ungrateful and wicked (Luke 6:35, see also Romans 2:4). Clearly, that is the example for us to follow. We are to be kind to everyone, including those who do not reciprocate.

The people I find it the most difficult to be kind to are often the people within my own family. I don’t think I am alone in that! We’d love you to partner with us by talking to your own children about kindness over the next month. More importantly, I pray that we will all model kindness, within our families, our school community, and beyond.Medon Loupis, Senior Chaplain
