SOUTH ISLAND ARCHERY
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
Last week I spent two days in Wanaka at
the Otago/Southland Pr inc ipa ls ’ Conference. Of particular interest were
Paul Ferris speaking on “Reflections on a Career in Education” and Sandra Sidaway talking about the
Ministry’s new approach to Principal Mentoring.
This week applications for the positions of Head
Students for 2018 closed. We have six applications and I am extremely encouraged at their calibre. On
Monday in assembly our applicants will speak to their peers and the staff about how they will promote the
school values and culture and why they should be
chosen for the position. Following that, senior students and staff will have the opportunity to do some
indicative voting and in early December interviews will be held. The final announcement as to who will be our
2018 Head Students will be made at our end-of-year
Prizegiving.
What this also means is that it is time to acknowledge the very fine work that our Head Students for 2017
have done. Josh, Emma, Georgia and Reid have been a very cohesive team and great student leaders. The
work that they have done has been impressive. I am
very proud of their achievement. Thank you for your clearly visible loyalty and commitment to Fiordland
College.

Lynlee Smith
Two of our students have been travelling each week to
Invercargill for Archery Coaching.
Jack Light and Sid Spence have already moved into the top spots in Southland
and have now gone one step further at
the South Island Secondary Schools’ Championships in Wanaka. The area
they “shot” in was the Junior Sighted Compound section with Jack winning
and Sid finishing runner up!
THE Year 9/10 Exams are set for 08 & 09 November.
Students will have FOUR assessments of up to 2 hours’
duration each. They will be English, Mathematics, Science and Social Sciences.
We stress the value of these exams as vital preparation for students leading into NCEA. They assist with
learning exam preparation and study skills, strategies to be used in assessments and highlight areas for the
students to enhance before NCEA.

The Fiordland College Golf team participated in the
Southland Primary School Northern Zone Tournament at Mossburn, last week. The team comprising George
Prendergast, Caitlin Hollows, Tayla Roberts and Bailey Taylor had a fantastic day coming out on top in 1st
Place. There were 18 teams in the competition. They

Elwing Discovery Dayskipper Course
During the holidays Hazel Allen was lucky enough to go on the Elwing Discovery
Dayskipper Course.
She experienced new and exciting challenges every day
(kayaking, swimming, sailing) in an absolutely gorgeous setting. Hazel was able to see a part of NZ not many
people get to see and experience the rugged wilderness of Stewart Island. She also achieved NCEA credits.
