Thursday 29 March 2018 END OF TERM EDITION Dear Parents and Carers In this last week of term the efforts of students across the school have been celebrated individually and collectively in our Year Achievement Assemblies. Over 90,500 achievement points have been awarded so far this academic year along with 1,916 HT Commendations. Many congratulations to all students who have worked so hard and made such progress this term. It was a pleasure to welcome parents to our Wellbeing Evening on Monday night and our Year 11 Revision Evening on Wednesday evening. We had representatives of CAMHs with us on Monday and I am very pleased that they are now opening a Haven, a centre where young people can drop in to get support with a variety of worries, anxieties and mental health issues. The Haven is based at the Focus Youth Centre and you will find specific details of what is on offer later in this newsletter. We have met with our Year 11 students once again this week to remind them how to plan and prioritise their time over the Easter break and to discuss with them how to manage positively the inevitable anxieties that come as they prepare during these final weeks into the lead up to their exams. One of the support mechanisms on offer to students are our Wellbeing Ambassadors and they gave a compelling presentation about their work at the Wellbeing Evening. You can find all the materials from that evening on our website, click here. Uniform Reminders A number of students have been wearing trainers over the last couple of weeks. Please could we use the Easter break to ensure shoes and any skirts, which are now too short, are replaced. I would be grateful if parents would ensure that any nail varnish, artificial nails or eyelashes worn over the holiday are removed when we return on the Monday 16 April and that jewellery is also left at home, apart from one plain set of studs in the earlobe. Thank you for your support. Finally, we wish Mr Bruton and Miss Abrahams all the very best for their respective weddings over the Easter break and I would like to extend my thanks to staff, governors and students for all their hard work this term and to parents for your continuing support. It has once again been a privilege to work with all members of the Rosebery community this term and I wish you all a peaceful, relaxing and a sunny Easter holiday. Ros Allen @RoseberyHT

The results were absolutely fabulous! 20% of the students, gained very high Merit marks and the remaining 80% were awarded Distinctions with marks of over 80/100. LAMDA promotes self-confidence, presentation skills, vocal strength and team work, as well as giving UCAS points and interview skills for life beyond Rosebery. This is an incredible success! Particular congratulations to the following students;

Polly Cooper - achieved 92/100

Eva Sellers - achieved 90/100

Ellie Crane - achieved 90/100

Martha McRobb - achieved 94/100

Agnes Franklin Hardy - achieved 97/100

Harley Reynolds - achieved an amazing 100/100

These marks show their dedication and commitment to Drama at Rosebery. We are lucky to have this facility at Rosebery and the LAMDA Teachers, Susanna Klemm and Ruth D'Souza, would like to thank all the Students and Parents for their continued support. Fingers crossed to all our Year 11 and 12 students who have their Silver and Gold examinations on 29 April this year.

Out of Heart by Irfan Master featured on the Carnegie Medal longlist

this year. It is a novel which deals with experiences of grief and loss,

but also with issues of prejudice in contemporary Britain. Suitable for

KS3 readers.

The Mouse and his Child by Russell Hoban is a deceptively simple tale concerning a toy mouse. This is a classic fable

dealing with loss, identity and the search for happiness. Suitable for readers of any age.

Skype Conference Call

On Thursday 22 March 2018 a group of Sixth

Form students took part in a Skype

conference call with a multi-national

management consulting corporation,

headquartered in Paris, called Capgemini.

The HR Programme Director of Capgemini,

John Gillard, introduced the company and

set up the conference which went live to

Paris and to India.

‘In Paris we spoke to Tania, their Diversity Consultant. She spoke about her career path and diversity in the

workplace. In India we spoke with Suzanne, who is out there working on a new project. She explained her journey

and not knowing what she wanted to do for a career. She went to a business college and from there did an

internship and joined Capgemini.

What we learnt from listening to these inspiring women was the need to be resilient have good communication,

problem solving, team working and listening skills in an ever-changing world of work’.

Capgemini UK has recently been recognised for its leadership on workplace gender equality by being named in

The Times Top 50 Employers for Women 2017.

Rosebery Spring Concert 2018

By Mariana Lawson-Fernandez 12B

Last week Rosebery celebrated the start of the new season with its annual Spring

Concert. The widely anticipated event was well attended with hardly a spare seat

in the hall. The concert kicked off with the Rosebery School Orchestra, directed by

Mrs Turner, who started with Beethoven’s Egmont Overture and followed it with a

lively rendition of John Moss’ Great Movie Marches. The first half of the concert

featured performances from a variety of different musical groups, such as the

Strings Orchestra and Young Voices, leading to a display of different musical genres

and styles; all greatly enjoyed by the audience. The interval marked the halfway

point in the evening and a special thanks is given to the Year 10 students who were

in charge of refreshments, which everyone was grateful for. The second half of the

concert got underway at the end of the interval starting again with a bang thanks

to the Broadway Band and their performances of Aladdin and Adele in Concert.

A highlight of the evening was the Rosebery Singers (recent winners of the Youth

Choirs’ Competition at the Leith Hill Festival 2018) who sung Faure’s Agnus Dei and

West Side Story’s ‘Somewhere’ beautifully. Other highlights were the two solo

performances, the first of which was Jessica Pascal’s trombone solo where she

performed Romance by Weber, and second of which was Alice Mills’ piano solo

where she performed Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin. Congratulations to them both

on their excellent performances and courage to perform as soloists.

Overall the Spring Concert was a great success thanks to all the wonderful

renditions and, of course, to our music teachers, Mrs Turner, Miss Subramaniam,

Mr Valenti and Mr Eaglestone, together with our accompanists. Moreover, many

thanks to our student directors, Alice Mills (who also arranged the music to Strings

Orchestra and Junior Band along with Lauren Sparham) and Holly Payne, not

excluding all the other students who helped make the evening a great success.

Examinations Timetables All students in Years 11, 12 and 13 should have received their individual examination timetable for this summer. Further information regarding results day arrangements will be made available nearer the time. If you have any examination queries at all please do not hesitate to contact the Exams Office at [email protected] Essential Exam Equipment Year 11 12 & 13 students - please make sure you have the following stationery items in preparation for your forthcoming exams: Transparent pencil case Black Pen Pencil Sharpener Eraser Ruler Pair of compasses Protractor Scientific Calculator (Casio FX-83GT recommended) Exam Certificates for Year 11 and Year 13 Leavers only – Summer 2018 The summer 2018 exam certificates will be ready for distribution by November 2018. If you are interested in this service then you can pay by Parent Pay before the end of the summer term; this service costs £2.50. When the time comes, the certificates will be sent Recorded Delivery to your home address. Please inform us of your new address, if you move house. However, if you prefer to collect your certificates in person, you will be sent a letter later in the year inviting you to come in to school and sign for them. Please rest assured that we do not destroy exam certificates and if neither of the above options suit you then you can email the exams office [email protected] to arrange another convenient time to collect them after Christmas.

On Saturday 17 March Rosebery Singers and Young Voices took part in the Leith Hill Youth Music Festival at

Dorking Halls. The event featured many schools from across the region and each Choir performed two songs.

Rosebery Singers performed ‘Somewhere’ from West Side Story and ‘It don’t Mean a Thing’.

Both Rosebery choirs sung with confidence in front of the audience. The judge made comments on each school’s

performance, focusing on the intonation and diction. There were many positive comments and some minor

negatives. Miss Subramanian conducted both choirs and Mrs Turner and Lauren Sparham played the piano very

well.

At the end of the festival the judge announced the winners of both age categories. In the older category,

Rosebery Singers came 1st and in the younger one, Young Voices did very well but unfortunately didn’t come first.

It was a great day for both choirs. Well done Rosebery!
