Dear Parents

Welcome to everyone who will be associated with Ilam for 2015. A special welcome to new families who join our school. I hope you all enjoyed some sort of break and feel refreshed for the year ahead.

The school opened on Monday with a roll of 459. It was wonderful to observe the children as they caught up with their friends, met new classmates and their new teacher. It was a reminder to us all of just how much of a privilege it is to be involved in educating your children. Our teachers are well aware of the huge impact they have on your children and the responsibility of ensuring that every child in their care receives the best possible education. I assure you all, that the school has a team of very dedicated and educationally focused teachers who are well prepared to deliver quality, teaching programmes.

Wednesday 11 February Wednesday 11 February Wednesday 11 February Wednesday 11 February ---- Mihi Whakatau /‘Greet the Teacher’ & Lunch / Tabloids Mihi Whakatau /‘Greet the Teacher’ & Lunch / Tabloids Mihi Whakatau /‘Greet the Teacher’ & Lunch / Tabloids Mihi Whakatau /‘Greet the Teacher’ & Lunch / Tabloids

Next Wednesday we have an exciting day in store where will formally welcome new children, families and staff to Ilam at our Mihi Whakatau. We will host our ‘Greet the Teacher’ event and the children will participate in a variety of fun ‘Tabloid’ sports events in the afternoon.

Any children, families and staff who arrived at Ilam after the second day of Term 3 last year, including those who are new to Ilam this year, will be formally welcomed to the school at our Mihi Whakatau starting at 11:30am. This event is not only for new families, current families are welcome to join us as we formally welcome our new people to our school. Parents and children will have an opportunity to speak in Maori, English or any other language if they so wish during this event. We anticipate the Mihi Wha-katau lasting about 30 minutes. This will be followed by a short assembly, where our 2015 International Ambassadors, House Captains, School Council members and Road Patrollers are acknowledged and receive their badges.

From 12:15-12:45 our ‘Greet the Teacher’ initiative that will be held. Like last year, the idea is that this is an opportunity to come in and share some lunch with your children, touch base with your child's teach-er, putting a face to the name if you haven't already met them, meet other parents who have children in your child's class and allow our teachers to meet their new class' parents. In short it is about building a relationship between your family and your child’s teacher. The lunch you share with your children can be as elaborate or as simple as you choose. Please note the idea is not to provide a shared lunch for other families, just your children. Last year’s event was very successful, with significantly higher num-bers than had been attending our previously held 'Meet the Teacher' evenings. If you are working, why not use some of your lunchtime and pop in for 10 or 15 minutes to 'Greet' your child’s teacher and share a quick bite to eat with your children? A coffee cart will be at the school during this time so you can purchase coffee at your convenience.

From 1:30 – 2:45, a variety of fun ‘Tabloid’ sports events will be held. Children will be in house groups and be rotating around a variety of events during the afternoon. Parents are more than welcome to come and view these activities.

Times and events, in summary are:

11:30 - Mihi Whakatau

12:00 - Short assembly

12:15 - Greet The Teacher

12:45 - Break for Teachers / Tabloid Set Up

1:30 - 2:45 Tabloids

We really are hoping for a good turnout for next Wednesday’s event, feel free to come for all three events or just part of the day.

PTA AGMPTA AGMPTA AGMPTA AGM

The Ilam School PTA are a very small group who make a large contribution to the school. I encourage you to attend their AGM and first meeting next Tuesday at 7.00pm in the staffroom. By attending the AGM you will not be cajoled into positions of responsibility but rather will show your support of the PTA. You may even decide you would like to assist in some small way this year, as the saying goes – many hands make light work!’

Thank you for your patience as our newly trained Year 6 children are put their recently learned skills in-to practice as they take control of the morning and afternoon crossing on Ilam Road. This is a really im-portant role and they do this in all weather conditions that can be testing at times. I know all the chil-dren and parents who use this crossing before and after school appreciated these children’s efforts.

It’s that time of the year to register your child aged 6-13, or yourself aged 13 and over for our 2015 Drama Stars Program. This course (formally known as Junior Drama run by Harlequin Players) commences Tuesday 10th February.

This program teaches all the essential skills, techniques and tips of drama. It involves our students in all on-stage and back stage elements of a production, where they run the show!

For our little stars, the 6-week course covers all the aspects of acting including projection, music, movement, improvisation, the audition process and more.

Our Big Stars will learn these skills too, plus gain a more advanced knowledge of staging a production, including casting, props, costuming, makeup and more! Auditions are held during week 3 and every student who auditions gets a part. They will then attend twice- weekly rehearsals, culminating in a well polished production at the end of the April school holidays. Cost $75.

To enrol, or for more information on any of our programs, please email us at [email protected], or phone/text Fay on 021 043 1108.
