Meet Aleisha Corfield—Deputy Cultural Leader

When I first came to Craighead, I was a timid Year 9 student. I wasn't confident, I wasn't outspoken and I was terrified of the Seniors. Now, being a Senior student, I don't know what I was so worried about. It's bizarre to think that five years attending Craighead will soon be over for me.

EQUESTRIAN

At the NZ Pony Club National Eventing Championships held near Rangiora in the holidays, Jessica Kerr was placed fourth overall in the 1.05m DC Trophy class, representing Ashburton/South Canterbury/North Otago. Abriele Morse rode as an individual and was second in the 95cm class.

At the recent Equestrian Sport South Island Eventing Championships, held at McLeans Island, Amalia Rowley won the 1.05m class. In the 95cm class, Abriele Morse was placed second and Georgie Dickson third and sixth on her two horses.

ROWING

Congratulations to Sarah Templeton (left) who was successful in being selected as part of the South Island U18 Team to compete at Lake Karapiro during the school holidays. The week provided a great opportunity to train and row alongside team mates from both the North and South Island, and culminated in a weekend of racing which saw the South Island come away with the most points overall and bring home the Menzies Trophy. Emma Trolove and Olivia Hughes also spent the week up at Lake Karapiro participating in the NZ Junior Trials which enabled them to experience and learn a lot about taking their rowing to the next level.

TEENAG

Congratulations to Elizabeth Hampton (left) and Emily O’Reilly who were placed third overall at the recent TeenAg competition for students aged between 14 and 18, hosted by Geraldine High School.

They took part in a range of challenges, covering fuel contamination, wool identification, first aid, and tying down trailer strops. The top five teams qualified for the finals, where they were challenged to set up a perimeter fence around a camp area, pitch a tent, and construct a piece of children’s camping furniture.

ATTITUDE VISIT

Zara from Attitude will be giving presentations to all year groups on

Monday 16 May. Attitude is the youth division of The Parenting Place and presents health issues relevant to young people in a lively, yet wholesome way. The sessions are: Period 1: Years 7 & 8 Identity and Choices Period 2: Year 9 Hauora (Holistic Wellbeing) Period 3: Year 11 Safety – Drugs and Alcohol Period 4: Year 10 Sex with Attitude (Healthy Relationships) Period 5: Years 12 & 13 Mental Wellbeing

If you have any questions about the programme, please email me at [email protected]. Mrs Whittington, RSE Teacher

HOCKEY

The inaugural SISS ANZAC Hockey tournament was held during the holidays with teams from Craighead, Timaru Girls’ High School, Christchurch Girls’ High School, Columba College and St Andrew’s College attending. Having only played one game together this was a great opportunity for our girls to gel as a team and try out new combinations. Their first game against the eventual winners CGHS had the Christchurch girls scrambling when Craighead were ahead at half time 2-nil. The final score was 3-2 to CGHS. Craighead then drew with TGHS in

an intense game, and had losses to Columba and STAC. Although Craighead didn’t score a win, they can be justifiably proud of the way they played over the two days; with three of our First XI players away it was great to see our younger players slot into the team at short notice.

SAILING

Last week, the Craighead 420 team were at Snells Beach, Algies Bay, Warkworth for the National Secondary Schools’ Teams’ Sailing Championships which involved five and a half days of racing. We were faced with tricky and extreme wind conditions. Perks of the event included mixing with top New Zealand sailors including previous Emirates Team New Zealand skipper, Chris Dixon, who would ferry us out to the boat we would spend the day on. We finished 31st overall and 11th Girls’ team, winning the most races since 2013.

PERFORMING ARTS

Julia Hogg (Y12), recently starred as “Ariel”, the mermaid, in the SC Junior Drama League’s production of The Little Mermaid. Charlotte Howe (Y9), played her sidekick, the delightful little guppy “Flounder”. The show was a resounding success with children big and small mesmerised by the music, acting and colourful costumes of this popular

Disney, under-the-sea story. Julia, along with Brooke Askin (Y13), are also members of the cast of Mamma Mia, to be performed at the end of July.
