Kicking off on World Book Day, Thursday 5 March, SPINE Festival brings London communities together to celebrate the arts and literature in libraries. Through an exciting programme of FREE events including music, poetry, storytelling, visual art, dance and drama, SPINE Festival gives children, young people, families and local communities the chance to get involved in fun activities, performances and creative workshops with top professional artists.

11 boroughs, 33 libraries and over 50 free events will take place in this first ever pan-London libraries

festival. Step into a magical world of pop-up books and poetry with Half Moon Theatre’s Pop-Up

Flashback starring poet Joseph Coelho. Get crafty at the World Book Day Chatterbooks Special,

inspired by Lewis Caroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Design a brand new cover for your favourite book

at Deptford Lounge Library. Unleash your poetic powers with top stand-up poet Laurie Bolger at

the Spine Slam | Poetry Slam For Teens Workshop to compete for the Spine Slam title, judged by

none other than the Young Poet Laureate for London, Aisling Fahey. Plus so much more (full events

calendar pages 14 & 15).

Young people throughout local primary and secondary schools will also have exclusive access to an

even wider programme of great events (see pages 12 & 13 for details). Apples and Snakes are delighted

to be working in partnership with the boroughs of Bexley, Brent, Bromley, Croydon, Ealing, Harrow,

Hounslow, Lewisham, Southwark, Sutton and Waltham Forest. SPINE Festival encourages children and

people of all ages to explore and express ideas creatively, to stand up and be heard, and to view their

local libraries as the cultural spine of their community.

Spoken word artist Adam Kammerling brings his boundary pushing performance poetry to Catford Library.

Adam cut his teeth at the open mic cyphers and rap battles of the Brighton hip-

hop scene. Since 2008 he has been performing spoken word across the UK and

overseas. Weaving numerous voices through his own, he incorporates elements

of poetry, rap, theatre and comedy to create immersive, engaging works.

He has performed at Glastonbury, Latitude, Big Chill and numerous other

festivals. He has done theatre shows in Soho and at Bristol Old Vic and

has performed all over the South of England with his collaborative musical

projects. Adam delivers workshops in schools and has also worked with the

London charities, Art Against Knives and Tender, and the Cambodian NGO,

Tiny Toones, promoting spoken word and rap as positive and healthy forms of

self-expression.

Gemma ColdicottDance artist Gemma Coldicott brings her exciting choreography to

Brandon Library. With over 7 years of experience leading dance for children and young people, Gemma is

passionate about the power of performance art and its ability to engage people with their

local surroundings. Since 2011, Gemma has been Director of SLiDE (South London Inclusive

Dance Experience), and has run dance workshops internationally. She has taught dance across

communities, primary and secondary schools, and the special education need sector, and was

Project Manager for WordFest, a nine-month library based partnership project with Apples and

Snakes, Croydon Libraries, and Croydon Youth Arts.

Gemma has worked on several inspiring choreography commissions, including a commission

for the Lewisham Holocaust Memorial Day with Year 6 students. She is particularly interested

in the storytelling and narrative potential of dance, and in exploring alternative ways in which

dance can be archived, beyond the use of film and photography.
