Welcome to the 2016 Rocklyn ram saleSignificant rainfall over the winter months has benefited crop and pasture growth coming into spring, with the wet conditions making sheep work in the yards very messy! Rocklyn has made several advancements this year, with the introduction of ‘pedigree matchmaker’ scanning for all stud lambs. This will enable us to identify the dams (as well as the sires), allowing for more informed breeding decisions in the years to come and give buyers greater confidence in the genetics they are purchasing.We have also created a facebook page, so be sure to ‘like’ Rocklyn Merino Stud to stay up to date with our news.Rocklyn continues to produce dual-purpose Merinos - plain bodied, heavy cutting sheep in the 19-20 micron range that have high fertility and good early growth rates. Classing concentrates on long stapled, bright, soft handling wool that is well nourished with good crimp definition.

The 2016 Rocklyn sale ramsSixty hogget rams will be offered at the 2016 sale including both horned and poll rams. Rocklyn sires have been used for the horned rams along with the high growth rate ram 08SP30 (Severn Park blood). Bundilla, Banavie, Collinsville, Orrie Cowie, Poll Boonoke, Tuckwood, Woodpark and Wallaloo Park sires have been used for the polls.

Australian sheep breeding values (ASBVs) Yearling ASBVs estimate the genetic difference between animals at 10-13 months age and provide an indication of the genetic potential a sheep will pass on to its progeny.

When selecting rams, it is important to take these factors into consideration and combine this information with a visual assessment of the rams. Further data is available upon request.

YFD Yearling fibre diameter (μm) - rams with more negative YFD ASBVs produce progeny which are finer.

YFDCV Yearling fibre diameter coefficient of variation (%) - rams with lower YFDCV ASBVs will produce progeny with lower variation in fibre diameter.

YCFW Yearling clean fleece weight (kg) - rams with higher YCFW ASBVs produce progeny that will cut more wool.

YSL Yearling staple length (mm) - rams with more positive YSL ASBVs will produce progeny with longer staple length.

YWT Yearling weight (kg) - rams with more positive YWT ASBVs produce progeny that grow quicker and are heavier at a certain age.

YEMD Yearling eye muscle depth (mm) - rams with more positive YEMD ASBVs will produce progeny that have more muscle, independent of weight, and a higher lean meat yield.

* Indicates a trait leader (ranked in the top 30%, or better, of all animals in the current year drop recorded by MERINOSELECT).

Selection indexes Selecting animals involves balancing several key traits. To make selection easier, traits can be combined into a selection index. A selection index combines ASBVs for several traits to give a single value. This reflects the performance of the sheep relative to the breeding objective of the particular index. When using the indexes, it is important that the aim of the index matches the breeding objective for your flock. While indexes are useful tools, it is also important to consider individual trait ASBVs to ensure you are selecting genetics that will have the desired effect on your flock. Two selection indexes have been included for the sale rams in this catalogue - the Merino Production Plus (MP+) Index and the Dual Purpose Plus (DP+) Index.

MP+

Merino Production Plus Index - ranks animals on their ability to produce progeny for a fine wool operation that has significant surplus sheep sales. The index is aimed at producers whose sheep income is a balance of both wool and surplus sheep sales. It is for self-replacing merino flocks who do not keep their wethers to produce wool.

DP+

Dual Purpose Plus Index - ranks animals on their ability to produce merinos for dual purpose operations. The index is aimed at producers whose majority of sheep income comes from sheep sales.
