Whole School Assembly Our whole school assembly held on Wednesday was enjoyed by all in attendance, but most importantly by our students. This was an extremely important assembly as we presented our new student leadership group. I would like to congratulate Joshua S, Eliza, Tom, Shevaun, Jackson and Molly. They all received a certificate and school key ring to acknowledge the importance of their new role. Jan and I look forward to meeting with our student leadership group early next week.

I would like to congratulate the following students for receiving a Belmore Student Award for the month of April:

Elliott

Shayla

Jackson

Peter Lyall Memorial Scholarship On Monday evening I attended the Canterbury Rotary Club meeting along with Jan Welsh and our school council president Michael Havekotte. The Canterbury Rotary Club have had a long standing connection with Belmore School which was originally initiated by Peter Lyall who was an active member of their club and also the architect who designed much of our recent school development including the hydrotherapy pool, playground, art room and staffroom. Peter passed away 8 months ago and to honour his name the Rotary Club have developed the Peter Lyall Scholarship. This will be awarded annually to a staff member at Belmore School to assist with funding a professional learning initiative.

I am delighted to announce that the inaugural recipient of the Peter Lyall Scholarship is Fiona Allen. Fiona is our learning technologies co-ordinator and she will be using the scholarship to fund her participation in the Spectronics Inclusive Learning Technologies Conference in Queensland. Fiona had been invited to present at the conference but due to the high cost of attendance and accommodation was unable to participate in the full program. The Peter Lyall Scholarship funding will now enable Fiona to attend the entire conference and inevitably support her to introduce the latest specialised assistive technologies into Belmore School.

Fiona is a very worthy winner of the Peter Lyall Scholarship as she has been connected with Belmore School for many years having a daughter Jess attend the school prior to her commencing work here. Consequently Fiona worked with Peter on many of the Belmore School projects he was involved in. Fiona’s husband Stephen was a former member of the Belmore School Council who also worked closely with Peter on these projects as well as many other issues. Both Fiona and Stephen held Peter in high regard and Fiona was delighted to be given the honour of being granted this scholarship which has so generously been funded by the Rotary Club of Canterbury in Peter’s name.

Take care…Karen

Student Leadership Team

Page 4

I am really pleased to announce the names of the student leaders of Belmore School for 2014.

Before the holidays, I spoke to some senior classes to let the students know what an important role it would be if they were chosen to be school leaders.

Some students practised what they would put in their application over the holidays, and others talked about it in class time together and with their teachers.

Since the holidays, I have been back to the classes and students ideas have been presented to the management team to consider who would be chosen.

We decided we would have a boy and a girl from Rooms 1, 6 and 7 to represent all of the Belmore students, and on Monday, the management team read all of the applications.

It was a very hard task, as each student had some fabulous ideas about what they could do for and at Belmore – things like organising excursions, welcoming visitors, looking after their friends, and planning concerts.

We are so proud of all of the students who sent in an expression of interest.

After a lot of discussion, 6 student leaders were selected, and I have been to all of the students to let them know if they were successful or not. Those who are not leaders this year have been encouraged to try again next year.

I rang all of the parents of the successful students yesterday, and some have been able to come to see their child be presented with a leadership certificate. We will also have special name badges made, and the 6 students will meet soon with Karen and I to make some plans together.

Huge congratulations go to Eliza Robbins Brown, Joshua Steer, Tom Lock, Shevaun Bateman, Molly Carter and Jackson Inggall.

I know they will do a great job as student leaders, and ambassadors for Belmore School.

Jan Welsh

Family Night at Belmore

On 24th April, 2014 Belmore School celebrated Family Night. The Music Room was open and I showed my Mum how I play the ukulele. Mum joined in. The Gym was open and I showed Mum the treadmill and the other equipment. The Art Room was open and I showed Mum all the paints and the colouring competition entries. Mum and I went into Room 5 and had a turn on the touch screen TV, we played a game together. Mum and I went into the Sensory Room and we had a turn at lots of things. Mum and I went to the Common Room and I showed Mum the iPads. We had a turn at the Fishing App, Mum caught a fish. I got more fish than Mum.

Mum and I spent some time talking to friends in the hall. We spoke to Molly and Ginnie Carter. We spoke with Angela and Cybelle Motherwell. We met Angela’s cousins Pascale and Oscar.

Mum ate some pizza and had a drink of cordial. I wasn’t very hungry.

Mum, Angela and I looked for the Easter egg tokens together. We took the tokens to the hall and swapped them for Easter eggs. I ate the Easter eggs, they were yummy!!!!! We didn’t win anything on the raffles but my friend Elizabeth won first prize.

Then we spoke to Jackson’s family. Jackson pulled the raffle tickets out of the box.

Then we chatted to Justin’s family. Justin is a new student in Room 7. Justin has a brother and a sister.

Then Mum and I said goodbye to everyone and went home to enjoy our long weekend.

Family Night on Thursday 24th April 2014

Mum and Jack (my brother) came in the car to family night. I stayed at school. I showed Jack around the school, I showed mum around the school. I did hangout with Debbie. Blake was there too.

Jack did take off with my walker. Jackson chased after Hannah and Jack. I was about to take off with Jack’s crutches.

I had my face painted as a Pirate. Jack was painted as a dog. I entered the colouring completion, I didn’t win.

I played the ukulele with Jack and Hannah. I sang a song.

I spoke to Hannah and her mother, Donna.

There was only cordial to drink. I don’t like cordial so I just had my water from my water bottle. I had pizza. It was from Colombos. The pizza was delicious.

It was a good night!
