Orders are made online and parents will receive a confirmation of their order. Orders will be able to be made up until 9am on the day of the lunch order (you have until 9am to cancel a lunch order if your child is sick). Except when ordering sushi or rice paper rolls, these items must be ordered the day before. Details regarding the registration process for the new supplier was sent home last week. A copy will also be available on the school website. This newsletter lists information pertinent to your child’s class, including information about homework and the class timetable. If you have not made an appointment and wish to speak to your child’s class teacher, it is important that you contact the teacher to make a meeting. Don’t forget to return the information summaries as well. Information on how to book an interview was sent home on Monday. Please contact the office if you need any assistance.

PREP INFORMATION NIGHT We will be holding a Prep Information Night on Thursday February 16 at 7.00pm in Building E. Come along to find out about the routines, expectations and requirements of school and how you can support your child’s learning. This event is also a great opportunity for you to meet other Prep parents in the school. Parents of Prep students may also subscribe to the Department’s free weekly email alert that delivers tips, insights and news for parents of children in Prep- http://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/parents/primary/Pages/p4p.aspx SCHOOL COUNCIL On Monday we sent home some information regarding School Council and the election process. Please note that the closing date for nominations is Thursday 16 February at 4.00pm. If you were unable to fill in a nomination form but are willing to be part of council please see me ASAP. Nominations for School Council will be posted outside the office on Monday 20 February. Our first School Council meeting for the year is on Wednesday February 22 at 7:00pm. Members of the 2016 School Council will reside. LIBRARY BAGS Once again, we are requesting that all students have a library bag to use when borrowing a book from the library. This helps protect our books and keep them separate from other items in the school bag. Preps will be provided with bags as part of the government prep program and Year 1-6 students will be using their book box bags. Students are able to borrow from the library during their weekly library session or on a Monday at lunchtime – when the library will be open for quiet reading. UPDATING OF CONTACT INFORMATION: ABSENTEE NOTES If you have recently changed address or contact numbers, please ensure that we have your updated details. The DET has now enabled all schools to notify parents via SMS if an emergency at the school has taken place. To ensure that you receive this notification, please ensure that we have your latest mobile number. If your child is sick or unable to attend school due to ill health or an appointment, please provide a written note, even if you have phoned the school, as this is a legal requirement. MEDICAL NEEDS If your child has special medical needs – allergies, anaphylaxis, asthma etc. – please ensure the school has an up-to-date record of this. In particular with regard to anaphylaxis, asthma and allergies we require the Action Plan from your family doctor. It is vital that we meet our duty of care requirements and these medical plans are an important part of this. ROAD SAFETY AROUND MWHPS The start of the school year is an opportune time to remind parents of the importance of road safety. Please ensure that you abide by the 5km speed limit on the school premises and use the drop off zones appropriately to ensure the safety of all children. Please also ensure that you are following the direction signs so that accidents can be avoided. A reminder that the parking area alongside Building C is closed in the morning and afterschool, from 8:45-9:00am and again from 3:30-3:45pm. This is to allow students to make use of the crossing, safely. If you do intend to park in this area, you will need to wait until the gates reopen before exiting. The Huntingdale Road and Soloman Street car parks remain open. It is great to see more families’ use the Huntingdale Road car park, but please ensure that you park in the marked bays. I have noticed that some cars are parking on the island, making entering and exiting the car park extremely difficult.

PARENTS ASSOCIATION (PA) Parents are invited to attend our AGM (Annual General Meeting) held by the Parents Association on Wednesday 1 March in the Performing Arts Centre (PAC) at 7.30pm. The following provides an outline of the roles of the PA. Parent Association (PA)

Strives to develop at a school a real sense of community between parents, teachers and students. Works closely with the school authorities especially the Principal to achieve common goals. Encourages interaction and cooperation between home and school. Encourages active participation by parents in the life of the school. Have a friend raising as well as fund raising role. Provides a forum for discussion of relevant educational issues for parents. Assists in planning and organising functions for parents. Works to provide additional resources for teachers.

The Executive of the Parents Association Is responsible for planning, management and organisation of the Associations affairs. Holds regular meetings open to all parents, the Principal and teachers. Conduct meetings according to accepted practices. Uses organisational tools such as sub-committees to encourage wider participation.

If you are keen to get involved in all aspects of your child’s schooling, join the PA! STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE At this time of year, I am asked to remind parents that the school doesn’t have any student accident insurance and therefore parents are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of ambulance attendance/transport and any other transport costs. We strongly encourage families to purchase ambulance cover, as these expenses can be enormous compared to the initial outlay. Additional accident insurance policies can be purchased from commercial insurers. Can I also remind parents/guardians that the Department does not hold insurance for personal property brought to school and it has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property. We strongly recommend that students do not bring valuable items to school. SUNSMART

SLIP, SLOP, SLAP, SEEK AND SLIDE

On days of extreme heat a SWEAT time table is implemented whereby students remain inside during the lunch period. As a SunSmart school we are aware of our role in advocating for safe practices - promoting ways that will help students and staff keep safe for life. Remember to…

Slip on clothing

Slop on sunscreen

Slap on a hat

Seek shade

Slide on sunglasses Please ensure that your child has applied sunscreen prior to arriving at school on days where the UV index is equal to or greater than 3. We would also recommend that students have their own sunscreen in their bags which is suitable for their skin, so that they can reapply prior to lunchtime. Teachers encourage students to apply sun-safe practices by reminding students to reapply sunscreen and encouraging a variety of sun protective measures.

The Classroom/ Parent Helper Induction Program will be on Monday 20 Feb from 2 – 2.45pm (before assembly). This is a great opportunity to learn more about how you can help in the classroom. Class teachers appreciate classroom helpers as an important aspect of working with parents and families to support student learning. Students also welcome their parents’ involvement as a regular and enjoyable highlight of the school week. If you are interested in assisting in the classroom under the guidance of the classroom teacher this induction program will help you:

Develop an increased understanding of the development of literacy skills.

Understand how to act as role models for students in classrooms.

Develop an understanding in how to provide effective literacy support for individual or small groups of students.

Learn about Working With Children Check and Child Safe information

A note has gone home today so please return the reply slip indicating your attendance. Information Exchange Night time slots are now open on the parent portal. You need to login using your email address and password you created. At this stage due to Sandra Douglas needing surgery on her finger, 5/6D interviews have been cancelled. We will keep you informed as more information comes to hand. It has been wonderful to see our teachers embrace ideas from Michael Ymer. Michael is a specialist maths consultant who presents at a number of schools across Australia and Asia. Check out the photos below from our whole day professional learning.

Once again we thank you for your support and understanding while we roll out our Parent Portal. As with any new system we are slowly learning about the features and troubleshooting any problems that may occur. Please come and see me if you need any help. Physical Education NOTES:

Please ensure students have a drink bottle and a hat for their PE session.

The Summer Round Robin is on Friday 17 Feb. We would love to have parent helpers for this day. If

you are available to coach or assist with a team please see Miss Hannah, Mrs Douglas or myself.

District Athletics is Friday 24 March. Each school is allocated an event and duty for the day. If you

are available to assist us on the day, your help would be appreciated. We are looking for a parent

to go on the bus, do a duty and help on an event. Please let me know if you can help.
