She participated in art exhibi-tions on Aruba as well asabroad, however she prefersto label herself as an artisaninstead of an artist. “In jew-elry,” she explains,” the mes-sage is optional. An objectcan just be beautiful on itsown, distinguished by itscolor or the kind of materialused. Each piece is uniqueand has a story of its own”.

In 2008 Marian and herhusband Ciro launched Terra-fuse –Aruba Glass & Ceram-ics, a foundation designed topromote the art of glass andceramics on the island ofAruba. A couple of years be-fore that, they opened thefirst glass studio here. Nowa-days, Marian teaches bead-making workshops tobeginners and advancedbead-makers twice a weekand the studio is open for vis-itors during those hours.

She also teaches localyouth, between the ages of 14and 25, an initiative sup-ported by Terrafuse founda-tion and the Arubangovernment (UNOCA),keeping the price of theworkshops low, aiming toteach the art form, yet alsobroaden students’ horizons, letting them find out whatthey can do with their hands.

“Even after teaching thebeginners’ workshop 100times, I don’t get bored,”Marian states,” as it is a priv-ilege to open the world ofglass to people. It makes peo-ple proud of themselves andtheir accomplishments atmaking their own uniqueglass creations.”

The Marian Abath collec-tion at Caribbean Queen in-cludes colorful jewelry andart objects. Her work will beon display for the wholemonth of December. Every-one is invited to stop by theCaribbean Queen, on the firstfloor of the Palm Beach PlazaMall, to browse and perhapseven make a purchase, as it isthe season of giving.

"We do understand thatsome countries, both in theregion and elsewhere, haveoffered to host Assad and hisfamily should he choose toleave Syria," Toner said.

Such long periods are called"supercycles" and becausethey last happened so longago, they are not documentedin human history.

The worrisome intersec-tions are points where frac-tures, caused by the movementof ridges on the ocean floor, cross with a subduction zoneat a boundary on Earth's tec-tonic plates.

Why these meeting pointsbecome hotspots is unclear.

One theory is that the com-plex fractures act as a brake, preventing the slow subduc-tion movement. As a result, thestress accumulates over verylong periods until it is releasedcatastrophically.

PARIS (AFP) - Seismologistsunveiled a map highlightingzones most prone to unleash-ing the world's biggest earth-quakes, including the 9.0monster that struck northeast-ern Japan in March 2011.

These mega-quakes springmostly from regions wherefractures on the sea floor inter-sect with subduction zones, orzones where one slab ofEarth's crust is diving slowlyunder another, they said.

The evidence is statistical, coming from data from 1,500earthquakes.

Over the past century, halfof the 50 largest earthquakes

with a magnitude of 8.4 ormore have occurred at thesedangerous intersections, thescientists said.

The rate rises to 87 percentfor the 15 biggest quakesabove 8.6 magnitude, includ-ing behemoths that haveshaken Chile and Alaska.

Subduction zones are wellknown for engendering verypowerful quakes.

Some regions are notori-ous, such as the Sunda Trenchoff Indonesia, which spawnedthe 9.1-magnitude IndianOcean quake and tsunami ofDecember 2004.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Re-publicans warned PresidentBarack Obama on Wednesdaythat he must take the lead onnegotiations over the so-calledfiscal cliff and present a solu-tion that could pass both theHouse and Senate.

Speaker of the House JohnBoehner told his Republicancaucus in a closed-door meet-ing that Obama "has a respon-sibility to put forward a planthat can pass both chambers ofCongress," an official who at-tended the meeting said.

The White House and oppo-sition Republicans are strug-gling to thrash out a deal thatavoids a set of crippling taxhikes and across-the-boardspending cuts that kick in earlynext year if the two sides fail toagree on how to reduce Amer-ica's skyrocketing debt.

Obama presented an initialoffer last week, while Republi-cans led by Boehner presentedtheir counter-offer. Both havebeen rejected outright -- at leastpublicly -- by the other side.

Boehner pointed to the Re-publicans' proposal to raise$800 billion in new revenuesby closing tax loopholes andending some deductions as asign they are "ready and eager"to negotiate in good faith.

That's part of the broader$2.2 trillion Republican pack-age, including $1.2 trillionsliced from federal spending, with half of that coming di-rectly from Medicare, the fed-eral health program for theelderly.

Boehner insisted that theplan Obama has put forward, which includes $1.6 trillion innew taxes and just $600 billionin spending cuts, "couldn't passeither house of the Congress."

Kevin McCarthy, the

House's number three Republi-can, said he saw an opportunityfor Obama to show leadership.

Obama wants to extend taxcuts for 98 percent of Ameri-cans but raise rates on the rich-est two percent. Republicanswant to extend all tax cuts for ayear, and discuss spending cutsand tax reform to produce morerevenues.

The president campaignedfor re-election on the basis ofraising taxes on the wealthiest, while Republicans, though opento raising more revenue, refuseto do so by raising marginal taxrates.
