NAIFA-DALLAS PROGRAMThursday | February 28, 2013 | Prestonwood Country Club

NAIFA-Dallas and our 2012-13 Program Sponsor are proud to present:

Connecting increases your influence in every situation. If you can connect with others – one-on-one, in groups, and with an audience – your sense of community improves, your ability to create teamwork increases, and your influence skyrockets. People who connect with others have better relationships, experience less conflict, and get more things done than those who cannot connect. Leaders who have learned the art of connection are able to communicate their ideas persuasively, establishing buy-in and attracting followers.

Only one thing stands between you and success. It isn’t experience; it isn’t talent. If you want to succeed, you must learn how to connect with people. And while it may seem like some people are just born with it, the fact is anyone can learn how to make every communication an opportunity for a powerful connection.

Jason Bach, CFP currently serves as the Managing Partner of MassMutual Dallas-Fort Worth, a comprehensive financial services firm that is rapidly growing in North Texas. His responsibilities include but are not limited to recruiting, developing and leading new associates to this financial organization. Through team leadership we are capable of developing

inexperienced associates to success levels that cause the individual to outpace the industry by a wide margin.

Bach joined MassMutual in October of 2003 as the Investment Specialist. In June of 2004, he was named Sales Manager and was named Rookie Sales Manager of the Year during his first year. He has worked his way up to a partnership role, working closely

with other sales managers for the growth and development of associates.

Jason is a graduate of Florida Atlantic University where he majored in Finance. He is an alumni of Delta Sigma Pi and the Financial Management association. He has completed the Certified Financial Planner educational program and has been designated as a Certified Financial Planner. Jason is currently a member of NAIFA-Dallas, Financial Planning Association (FPA), and also sat on the steering committee for the Tennessee American Business Ethics Award for the Society of Financial Services Professionals.

Jason resides in Plano with his wife, Meredith, and their two children, Hannah Rae and James Alexander. When he is not spending time with his family, church or work, he will squeeze in a game of racquetball.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEBeverly A. Norman, SGS | 2012-13 NAIFA-Dallas President

It pays to be a member of NAIFA!

On January 22nd, 130 NAIFA-Texas m e m b e r s , along with c o l l e a g u e s from the Texas

Association of Health Underwriters and the Texas Association of Life and Health Insurers, took to the Capitol to meet with legislators and their staff regarding issues of importance to our industry. With roughly one of every four members of the 83rd Texas Legislature in their freshman term, there was ample opportunity to forge new relationships. Tallie O. Young (NAIFA-Dallas National Committeewoman), Lane Boozer (NAIFA-Texas Secretary/Treasurer) and I met with

freshmen Representative Ron Simmons and his staff. Representative Simmons had just attended a congressional budget review and asked us how was it possible to see a line item stating healthcare will be more affordable in 2014 through the state exchanges. Tallie, Lane and I paused and looked at one another, and in that moment we felt the excitement of why we were there representing NAIFA and our livelihood. Being able to educate our legislators and their staff on issues that affect our clients, careers and families might be fundamentally one of the most important roles we have as NAIFA members. Our members shared valuable information on everything from 403(b) and 457(b) retirement plans for Texas public school employees, to health insurance/PPACA mandates, to the long-term viability of the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association. I look forward to visiting Representative Simmons when he returns to his home

district in Carrollton, Texas. If you would like to become more active and meet with your Texas Congressmen, please contact our NAIFA-Dallas office, and we will assist in building a relationship.

Enjoy attending association luncheon meetings that are lively, informative and share at least one new sales idea which will help grow your business? It will be well worth your time to attend our February 28th monthly luncheon as our speaker is our own NAIFA-Dallas Government Relations Chair, Jason Bach, CFP with MassMutual Dallas-Fort Worth (see page 5). Jason brings an energy and passion to our NAIFA-Dallas board meetings that revitalizes us and keeps us creative as a team. Look forward to seeing you at the luncheon.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Every two years, like clockwork, when you review your clients’ needs, you also renew your insurance license. That’s when you come see Dan Anderson to get your two-hour CE credit for Texas Regulations and Ethics. Sure, you can take it online and fall asleep, or you can spend time with Dan and at least be entertained, as well as educated. You see, you already know nearly everything he will impart upon you; you have simply repressed the information. He will reach into your brain and extract it, bringing it back to the surface where you can utilize your values. The Regulation part is the rules; the Ethics part is how to behave. He’ll re-teach you your insurance manners. Heck, he’ll even guarantee his dividends if you’ll pay your premiums! Come find out why and how.

Daniel started his financial services career in 1996 with Merrill Lynch where he completed their Professional Development Program and obtained his Certified Financial Manager designation. He has been an advisor with Armor Wealth Management/Ayres Financial Group since 2001.

Agents E&O Policy Tip – The Insolvency SolutionMany agent E&O Insurance providers attempt to limit their exposure to claims arising out

of the insolvency of a product provider. This is typically handled through an insolvency

exclusion on the agent E&O policy that indicates the policy will not apply to claims arising

out of the insolvency of an insurance company, a financial institution, a specific product

or a specific plan. The terminology will vary; however, most E&O providers are simply not

interested in being the default insurer of an insolvent company or product through E&O

claims made against the agents it insures. At the same time, some insurers are willing to

provide some level of coverage to the agent for insolvency when the agent is placing

coverage with companies or products it deems secure. They are willing to “carve back” the

exclusion by adding language like “this exclusion shall not apply to any insurer that was

rated A- or better by AM best at the time of the insured’s acts”. Again, the language will vary

but the insurer is attempting to give back some coverage within the insolvency exclusion.

Now Available!

A new online risk management course is now available directly and exclusively to NAIFA

members that will save you 10% on your premium. This online course was developed to

help you identify the legal basis for agents professional liability claims, identify professional

liability exposures and causes of loss, and determine specific risk management procedures

for all areas of agency management. CE credit is available for this course.

RISK MANAGEMENT TIP:

In order to minimize your risk to uncovered claims, make sure you are evaluating the

carriers and products in which you are placing business. Perform appropriate due diligence

by researching the companies with whom you do business. AM Best provides one tool to

evaluate insurance companies, but don’t stop there. Seek out company financials and stay

current with insurance and financial news. Additionally, take the time to review your E&O

policy. Does your policy have an insolvency exclusion or any other exclusions that deal

with a failed product or company? Be familiar with these exclusions and understand how

they impact your business. When evaluating a new E&O policy, look for a “carve back” to the

insolvency exclusion that may provide you with additional security when placing business.

By understanding your E&O coverage and minimizing your exposure to insolvency claims,

you may save yourself a great deal of time, money and emotional distress.

YAT at Heart Campaign

The NAIFA Young Advisors Team (YAT) developed the YAT at Heart Campaign to recognize

the rich history and legacy created by NAIFA members and to build a secure foundation for

the “passing of the torch.” YATs are the future of NAIFA, and our goal is to help increase

their success by connecting them with you – a seasoned NAIFA member successful in your

career. We need members like you to help us spread the NAIFA message, engage new YAT

members and develop lasting connections, in turn making you a YAT at Heart.

To become an official YAT at Heart, you as a non-YAT member are encouraged to recruit

a new YAT member to NAIFA during the 2012-2013 membership year (ending on June 30,

2013). The new member must list you in the sponsor field of the membership application and

identity himself/herself as a YAT (any member 40 years of age or under OR within his/her first

five years in the industry).

All YAT at Hearts will be recognized on the NAIFA website at www.naifa.org/yat

throughout the membership year, as well as on screen and in the awards program book

during the 2013 NAIFA Career Conference and Annual Meeting in San Antonio, where

he/she will also receive a YAT at Heart ribbon. All YAT at Hearts will also be entered in

a drawing to receive a complimentary registration to attend the 2013 NAIFA Career

Conference and Annual Meeting. Furthermore, any new YAT member recruited will be

eligible to count toward the Outstanding Member Recruiter Program (for information about

the Outstanding Member Recruiter Program, please contact the NAIFA Member Service

2013 NAIFA-Texas Legislative Day and 88th Annual Business Meeting | January 21-22, 2013 | Austin, TXTallie O. Young, RFC, LUTCF

The events began on Monday evening with the LILI (Leadership in Life Insurance) graduation of our own board member, Ericka Upton. Congratulations Ericka! The graduation was followed by a welcome party and politicking by the candidates.

On Tuesday, 130 NAIFA-Texas members, including NAIFA-Dallas members President Beverly Norman, President-Elect Laura Biesemeyer, Board member Christi Daughenbaugh, PIC Chair Steve Harris, NAIFA-Texas Secretary Treasurer Lane Boozer, Past President Cylinda Clark, NAIFA-Texas Trustee Randy Robertson, Past President David Blanchard, Past President Andra Grava, Past President R. Keith White, Executive Vice President Karen True, and National Committeewoman Tallie O. Young went to the Capitol building in Austin to meet with legislators and their staff to discuss matters important to NAIFA members and our clients. We were joined by members of Texas

Association of Health Underwriters (TAHU) and Texas Association of Life and Health Insurers (TALHI). Unfortunately many legislators had not returned from the long weekend. But determined, we visited as many of their offices as possible, meeting with staff if the legislators were not available. Several legislators who were available returned with us to the hotel for the Legislative Appreciation Luncheon, where we heard a wonderful speech by Texas Attorney General, Greg Abbott.

Following the luncheon, the NAIFA-Texas 88th Annual Meeting was conducted. Present were 21 local associations, represented by 56 delegates. Including the board members, we had a total of 66 delegates. A bylaws change was proposed and discussed to reduce the number of trustees from 7 to 5. The idea behind the change was the challenge of getting and maintaining qualified volunteers to serve. The vote needed 66% to pass. It was two votes short.

Four candidates were running for trustee positions; they were: Hollie Gandy, Michael Kennedy, Joseph Orr and Douglas Richards. All four were elected to the 2013-2014 Board of Trustees with a vote by acclamation. Dee Carter, in the only contested race with Stephen Ehlers, was elected National Committeeman. Jason Talley was elected Secretary Treasurer, and Lane Boozer was elected President-Elect.

NAIFA-Texas PAC raised more money than any other PAC in the country in 2012! We were #3 in the number of PAC contributors. If you are contributing, THANK YOU! If you are not, please consider doing so to protect YOUR paycheck! The NAIFA-Texas PAC raised $16,945 at the convention.

One of my favorite quotes during the convention was from Ben Franklin, “When you’re finished changing, you’re finished”. So I hope we are not finished changing!

A Great Recipe for a Peace-Filled Life in 2013

1. Take a 10 to 30 minute walk every day. And while you walk, smile. It is the ultimate anti-depressant.

2. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day. Talk to God about what is going on in your life. Buy a lock if you have to.

3. When you wake up in the morning, complete the following statement: “My purpose is to _______________ today. I am thankful for _______________.

4. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants. .

5. Drink green tea and plenty of water. Eat blueberries, wild Alaskan salmon, broccoli, almonds and walnuts.

6. Try to make at least three people smile each day.

7. Don’t waste your precious energy on gossip, energy vampires, issues of the past, negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.

8. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a college kid with a maxed out charge card.

9. Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good.

10. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

11. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

12. You are not so important that you have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

13. Make peace with your past so it won’t spoil the present.

14. Don’t compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is about.

15. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

16. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: “In five years, will this matter?”

17. Forgive everyone for everything.

18. What other people think of you is none of your business.

19. GOD heals everything – but you have to ask Him.

20. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

21. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will stay in touch.

22. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

23. Each night before you go to bed, complete the following statements: I am thankful for ___________. Today I accomplished ___________.

24. Remember that you are too blessed to be stressed.

25. When you are feeling down, start listing your many blessings. You’ll be smiling before you know it.
