Just as a withering flower that, with a little water and sunshine, comes to life, memories can be re-kindled with a little dose of humor and love. Humor therapy is used in both mainstream and alternative medicine. It can take many forms, but generally it is simply the recognition by physicians, nurses, and other health care practitioners the value of mixing humor and laughter with medication and treatment. It is especially important with seniors. Please join us in the provocative, inspiring and entertaining program that will give you new and exciting tools for caregiving. Smith is an iconic restaurateur, author, and pioneering transcultural lifestyle expert who merges

cultures through a shared appreciation for style. She has been heralded by The New York Times as “a Renaissance woman,” by Chuck Scarborough as a “domestic goddess,” by The New York Daily News as “one of the most important African-American style mavens of all time,” and honored with a 2012 Silver Spoon Award for sterling performance by Food Arts. A broadcast talent, entrepreneurial spokesperson and multiple award-winning recipient across a wide range of fields, Smith also earned kudos when she returned to the stage in her Off-Broadway debut in “Love, Loss, and What I Wore,” the award-winning play by Nora and Delia Ephron. In 2012, Smith was inducted into the American Chef Corps, part of the U.S. Department of State newly-formed Diplomatic Culinary Partnership with the James Beard Foundation. Prior to her diagnosis, Smith had teamed up with husband and business partner Dan Gasby (pictured) for their first-time radio show with the world’s largest radio broadcaster. Formerly, “The B. Smith and ‘Thank You Dan’ Show” was a daily, three-hour show on SiriusXM’s Urban View station, channel 128. More than 23 million subscribers were able to join in on their insightful conversations about healthy living, food, entertaining, succeeding in business, as well as sharing their secrets to a successful relationship.

WRISTBAND PROGRAM Speaker: Gary Joseph LeBlanc The majority of hospital workers are not trained in the unique needs of Alzheimer’s and dementia patients. To further complicate matters, hospitals are understaffed which means every moment is precious. Simply put, dementia patients often do not receive the special care they require and the results can be disastrous. How can we help? In this session our speaker will define the goals and objectives of this exciting project and tell us how our community can get involved in making this happen on a local level. You won’t want to miss this very special Closing Plenary Session that will put all of us on the way to seeing that anyone with a diagnosis of dementia/Alzheimer’s will have a safer and less confused stay in a healthcare facility.

MANAGING THOUGHT Speaker: Jim Ryan, Author and Motivational Speaker Extraordinaire Sometimes we get caught in a downward negative spiral of emotion. Sometimes we ride the upswing of positive emotion. Which do you prefer? Sometimes we feel good during the day, sometimes we don’t. Which do you prefer? Of course we all want to feel good and ride that positive emotion. Our emotions are precipitated by our thoughts. We can always trace a positive or negative feeling back to the thought that brought it on. How much better would your life be if you could be in charge of those emotions, choosing to feel good more often than not? In this program, “Managing Thought,” Jim Ryan will show you how to do just that! Let go of the thoughts that make you feel lousy and hang on to the thoughts that make you feel good. Change your thoughts and you will change your life. Take charge. A happier life is just a thought away.

SESSION I: STEM CELL RESEARCH: ADVANCING CURES FOR NEUROLOGICAL DISEASES

Sponsored by: Nancy Burner & Associates P.C. Speaker: Scott A. Noggle PhD Vice President, Stem Cell Research-The

NYSCF – Charles Evans Senior Research Fellow for Alzheimer’s Disease The New York Stem Cell Foundation Research Institute’s neurological disease research

program utilizes stem cell science’s power to recreate and study Alzheimer’s and other neurological diseases using actual human cells affected by those diseases in a dish. In addition, the NYSCF Global Stem Cell Array, a unique robotic technology, allows NYSCF scientists to scale and replicate those stem cell disease models, enabling faster and cheaper drug candidate screening, and accelerating the path to new treatments and cures. Dr. Noggle will discuss latest research developments and their impact on Alzheimer’s disease.

SESSION II: CAN’T YOU MAKE IT STOP? A RATIONAL APPROACH TO BEHAVIORS

Sponsored by: Personal-Touch Home Care of Long Island Speaker: Melanie Bunn, RN, MS, GNP (You will recognize Melanie

from Accepting the Challenge) Families and facilities often reach out to physicians and other healthcare professionals with

this common cry for help, universally looking for a simple, quick, inexpensive and benign answer – the answer that doesn’t exist. This interactive session will offer a framework for addressing these issues, with a focus on syndrome, commonly referred to as “Sundowning,”

.gnineve ylrae ro noonretfa etal eht ni yletanimoderp gnirrucco roivaheb ni segnahc esohtProgressively Lowered Stress Threshold is used as a foundation for understanding and impacting this misunderstood syndrome. While most successful interventions are simple and logical, too often we waste time and resources trying the wrong approach with the wrong person. By utilizing the 6 P’s: problem person, possible cause, plan, practice, pass it on, we can identify factors related to the disease and the individual, understand the underlying meaning of the behavior, develop an individualized plan, carry out the plan, and evaluate/adapt strategies dependent on response/success.

PLANNING FOR LONG-TERM CARE THROUGH THE VARIOUS STAGES OF ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE – SAVING THE FAMILY HOME Sponsored by: Somerset Gardens Senior LivingSpeakers: Members of ADRC’s Legal Advisory CommitteeOftentimes families will come to ADRC when there is a crisis. Even though planning can be done in a crises, this is not the best way to plan for a long-term illness. In this session members of ADRC’s Legal Advisory Committee will address issues such as the importance of planning while individuals are still healthy; the type of planning that should be done when an individual is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease; a planning strategy when an individual needs assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs);, and what plans should be put in place when an individual enters a nursing home. Time is allowed at the end for a Q & A session.

As the disease

progresses, additional regions are affected and more widespread degeneration occurs suggesting some neurons of the brain are more vulnerable than others. Dr. Barnea will discuss the vulnerability of these neurons, as well as the development of a stem cell model to mimic pathological features of Alzheimer’s disease and the study of genetic traits of Alzheimer’s to treat the disease.

SESSION I PM: TARGETING PROTEIN DEGRADATION PATHWAYS FOR DRUG DISCOVERY IN ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

PMSpeaker:VictorBustos,PhD,SeniorResearchAssociateatthe FisherCenterforAlzheimer’sResearch We have heard the words plaques and tangles affecting the brain function of someone with

Alzheimer’s disease. Plaques are a buildup of protein and tangles are the result of protein strands which fall apart. In this session Dr. Bustos will explain the two main pathways in cells which degrade biomolecules including proteins and which pathway is affected in Alzheimer’s disease. He will describe the efforts of Fisher scientists to increase protein degradation as a means to fight Alzheimer’s disease.

SESSION V: DRIVING AND DEMENTIA/ PROJECT LIFESAVER PROGRAM Speakers:RepresentativesfromtheSuffolkCountySheriff’sOffice One important safety concern caregivers of a person with dementia (PWD) may have to

address is whether or not the PWD should be allowed to continue to drive. As 70% of those with dementia will wander, another concern is what to do if they are a severe elopement risk. This informative session will offer guidance in what to look for when determining when to take the keys away and ways to do so. In addition, attendees will learn how invaluable the Suffolk County Sheriff ’s Office Project Lifesaver program can be in returning a loved one, who is a high elopement risk, home safely.
