LITERACY ~ NOVEL STUDY

. Families – In class we have discussed what good

readers do before, during, and after reading. Another helpful strategy is to read the questions before reading the chapter and look for key words. Remember to use the question to help you write the answer. As well, rereading and skimming are also strategies that the students have used when reading for specific information GRADE 3- JUDY MOODY NOVEL STUDY The entire novel ‘Judy Moody’ is available on a file on the ‘Online Opportunities’ page. It might be helpful to read the questions first so you can focus on key words when you are reading. Remember, the words from the question will help you write the answer. Please read Chapter 10, pages 92 to 103 – ‘The Funniest Thing Ever’. The illustration on the last page is so funny! Chapter Connection for ‘The Funniest Thing Ever’ only. Tell how the title ‘The Funniest Thing Ever’ connects to the events or characters in that part of the book. If time permits, please do some independent reading.

GRADE 4- RAMONA QUIMBY NOVEL STUDY Hopefully you finished reading “Ramona Quimby’ last week. If not, please take time to read it now. The novel is on EPIC. If you have finished the novel, please read this book on EPIC called “The Kindhearted Crocodile”. The main character is a crocodile who does good deeds, just like the man who did a good deed in the novel by paying for the Quimby’s meals at the restaurant. https://www.getepic.com/app/read/9103 Then please complete the worksheet. Two options for this work, you can either print the worksheet and work directly on it OR you can use a lined or blank sheet of paper. If time permits, please do some independent reading.

MOVEMENT BREAK Click on the tab for ‘Movement Break’. This is the time to take a break! (or whenever your body needs one!) MATH ~ GRADE 3 Today we are working on: review.

Families - Throughout the unit on fractions, students will have

opportunities to develop the concept that fraction parts are equal shares or equal-sized portions of a whole or unit. They will also have opportunities to demonstrate an understanding that there are different ways to represent a fraction (part of a group, number line, fraction bar, fraction circle), as well as matching/drawing pictures that connect to symbols.

Reread this sheet to help you remember what numerator and denominator mean. HINT: ‘DENOMINATOR’ is the number that is D = DOWN at the bottom.

Watch this video about how to write fractions in word form. You have probably heard people say: half, halves, thirds, quarters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNUNi19Lqhc On the FIRST worksheet, for question #4, you will need to know how to spell eighths. For the word problem that is question #5, try drawing 12 pieces of gum. Shade in the 7 pieces that Jane gives away. How many pieces does Jane have? If time permits, do some extra math practice on math apps that you have.

MATH ~ GRADE 4 Today we are going to look at adding decimals. It is just like regular addition, but you need to keep the decimal point lined up. For example, question 1 on page 336 should be laid out like this:

0.1 +0.6 --------------

0.7 To check your answers, you just need to count the coloured section of the fraction trains. In the first question, 7 squares are coloured. On the following page: In the first section, the numbers are given to you. You should shade in the fraction train and then do the math. In the second section, one addend and the sum (the answer) is given to you. You need to figure out what the missing addend is and shade it in. HINT—Addition and subtraction are related facts. You need to subtract the addend given from the answer to find the missing addend. Two options for this work, you can either print the math sheet and work directly on it OR you can write the answers on a blank piece of paper. I have also included a multiplication review sheet that you may do instead or in addition to the decimal sheets…whatever you choose!
