Craig Cameron, chief executive officer of BC3 told Sky Sports Radio in a live interview Thursday morning (Australian time) that vets were called in after farm staff noticed swelling in his right foreleg. He was taken to Werribee, and Cameron indicated that the bay responded well to initial treatment, but later suffered a Asevere reaction to anti-biotics, lost weight and became dehydrated.@ As a result, toxins traveled through the colt=s system and laminitis has developed. Keeneland, Cross Gate Team on Art Auction... Some of the best offerings in the country were ondisplay over the last two weeks at KeenelandNovember, andit’s possiblethe priciestamong themwon’t be of theequine variety. That’s becausea unique andbroadcollection offine art hasbeenassembled atthe Keenelandsales pavilion, with rare works by the likes of Americanluminaries Mary Cassatt and Andrew Wyeth expectedto fetch up to $7 million. The collection is part of the inaugural Sporting ArtAuction, to be held at the Keeneland sales pavilionWednesday, Nov. 20 beginning at 4 p.m. The event is a collaboration between Keeneland andGreg Ladd’s Lexington-based Cross Gate Gallery, andfeatures 174 “high-quality lots focusing on ‘sporting’paintings and sculpture by British and American artistsand works by important American realist andimpressionist painters,” according to event literature. Artists include Sir John Frederick Herring, Sir AlfredMunnings, Edward Troye, Franklin Voss, Peter Curling, and André Pater, as well three generations of Wyeths--grandfather N.C., father Andrew, and son Jamie. It wasJamie’s wife Phyllis Wyeth who bred and raced lastyear’s GI Belmont S. winner Union Rags. Racing fans will also be familiar with names likeRichard Stone Reeves and LeRoy Neiman, who isrepresented by a massive 7' x 17' mural that was oncedisplayed at the now demolished Sportsman’s Park. “We haven’t seen a gathering of sporting art like thisin at least 15 years,” said Keeneland’s Vice President ofSales Walt Robertson, who has helped put together theevent, and who will be handling the auctioneeringduties--along with Ryan Mahan--Nov. 20. The auction indeed will be unique. According toCross Gate owner Ladd, major auction houses likeChristie’s and Sotheby’s regularly held sporting artauctions in the 1970s and early ‘80s. Changes to thetax law, however, diminished demand for them. “We were talking with the folks at Keeneland, andthought it would be a perfect time to come back in anddo one--especially in Lexington,” said Ladd. “It’s thehorse capital of the world, and everyone would be herefor the sales. Hopefully, it’s good timing.” The auction didn’t happen overnight. The ideagerminated 13 months ago, and since then, Ladd hasspent considerable time and effort soliciting works. Hemade several trips to England, France and Canada, andall across the U.S., recruiting primarily private ownerswho might want to enter a piece. The original focus was strictly on sporting art. Theparameters broadened, however, when works byCassatt and Andrew Wyeth became available. “I thought we could do Wyeth, at least, because ofthe ties to Union Rags,” laughed Ladd, whononetheless wasn’t about to let a chance to sell aCassatt slip through his hands. “Of course, it's stillmostly sporting art, but we changed the description to‘Sporting Art, American Paintings and Sculpture.’”

Cassatt (1844-1926), a friend of Edgar Degas whospent much of her adult life in France and was greatlyinfluenced by the Impressionist movement there, isrepresented by her 1908 work “Children Playing With aCat,” which carries an estimated value of $5-6 million. Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009)’s painting is titled“Marsh Hawk” and has an estimated value of between$5 and $7 million. The painting, which gets its namefrom the hawk perched on post in the background, depicts a millhouse at the Wyeths’s Chadds Ford Farmin Pennsylvania--the same name under which PhyllisWyeth breeds. The work was executed in 1964.

Ladd said both paintings are rarities in themarketplace. "There hasn't been a major Cassatt orWyeth go through an auction in eight, 10 years,” hesaid. “The Cassatt was on the cover of the Sotheby'sauction catalog in 1998, and it subsequently made $3.2million. It's an important piece. The same with theAndrew Wyeth. We've seen some of his minor piecesgo through in recent years, but not a really major piecelike this. In 1981, [Marsh Hawk] was the highest-pricedpainting ever for a living American artist at the timewhen it sold for $420,000.” Don’t have seven figures to drop on a painting? Don’tworry. The catalog offers a variety of pieces thatshould appeal to an array of art lovers, including severalhandsome pieces valued at $5,000 or under. Robertson said the response to the auction has beenterrific. “We’ve had a lot of people in the last twoweeks who have never been to a horse sale come injust to see this,” he said. “Plus, there are a lot of peoplewho came from all over the world for the sale, andthey’ve spent an hour or two going through and lookingat all the works.” Including the word ‘inaugural’ in its literature impliesKeeneland and Cross Gate hopes to make the auction aregular event, and Robertson and Ladd confirmed that itcould become an annual fixture at Keeneland. “We’llsee how this first one goes, but yes, we’re veryinterested in this becoming a regular event,” saidRobertson.
