Our Fall Conference will soon be here and as usual, we have an outstanding lineup

of speakers and networking opportunities.

If you’ve attended in the past, you know the amount of information you get from the conference can be overwhelming.

After the conference, you may be thinking: “I really want to use the tips from the conference, but it’s easier to do things as we’ve always done them.”

I urge you this year to keep a conference note page titled, “Do It Now” and include new ideas you receive that you want to use in your business. Then when you get back to the office, prioritize that list and start with the best idea first.

Keep that “Do It Now” list in a visible location so you are reminded to use more of the ideas you gained from our Fall Conference.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I look forward to seeing YOU at the Conference on November 9-10.

ORDER YOURS TODAY!

Halloween is a perfect holiday for pest control companies to observe, have fun with and be known in the community as well! Here are some promotional activities:

Arm each technician with a Halloween giveaway to leave behind after service. Ideas: Candy roll w/custom imprinted wrapper, pumpkin magnet with your company contact info, key ring flashlight, imprinted trick or treat bag, reflective shoe stickers, Halloween

yo-yo, bone pen, LED safety lights, imprinted bag of plastic bugs. All of these items can be customized with your name, number, etc.

10 Tips for Getting the Most Out of the Iowa Fall Conference

Your company spends considerable money, not to mention time away from the job, for you to attend the annual Fall Conference. So why not maximize this expenditure of money

and time to get the most from the conference? Here’s how:

1 Review the agenda so you’re aware of the presentations to be given. Set “learning goals” for

what you want to learn from each presentation. Then, if you don’t hear your questions answered, approach the speaker after their session to clarify anything you need help with.

2 Bring the right gear. That means paper, pens, phones, ipads, batteries, cameras, chargers …

anything to help record your notes.

3 After the conference, teach what you learned to those in your company who could not attend.

4 DO NOT check email and voicemail during sessions. Not only is this distracting to those sitting

around you, but it shows disrespect for the speaker! Turn the phone OFF and focus on the speaker and on learning!

5 PARTICIPATE by asking questions of speakers and other attendees.

6 Make your exhibition hall wandering a relationship building exercise. Identify booths you’d like to visit

and make a beeline for them when you wander the halls.

7 Bring plenty of business cards and plan to collect cards for those you meet.

8 Sit beside someone you don’t know despite your tendency to hang with those people you know well.

9 Follow up after the event with those you’ve connected with.

10 In your notes, mark the things you definitely want to do or try when you get back to the office.

Rats Under Our FeetBy Dr. Stuart Mitchell

Across the U.S., infrastructural decay is

perpetuating wide-ranging damage and

failure of sewer systems. Generally out

of both sight and mind, sewer systems

are vital to public health. Combining sewer system

decay with the rat’s ability to swim one half mile in

open water, swim against substantial current in sewer

lines, and swim through plumbing water traps, rats are

increasingly and literally under our feet.

In 2011, a U.S. Senate Hearing discovered it

would take $330 billion to upgrade the nation’s

sewer systems. According to an American Society

of Civil Engineers’ study, an additional $9.2 billion

per year will be required for water and sewer system

maintenance and repairs through 2020. Increased

interruptions in water supplies and increased

contamination will become the norm. Additionally,

increased pest conditions will proliferate and emerge

from under our feet.

A daunting challenge, yet unprecedented

opportunity for pest management professionals, sewer

systems must become as essential and routine an

inspection region as the structural itself. Sewer system

awareness is accomplished through both proactive and

failure based camera inspections by a licensed plumber.

• Subcontract a licensed plumber or plumbing

contractor to conduct and document periodic

sewer line camera inspections.

• Document inspections as part of the Master

Cleaning Schedule (MCS) or equivalent

document (routine inspections).

• Facilitate correction of failing sewer lines.

• Facilitate repair or replacement of sewer line

failures.

• Used by rats, sewer systems are routes of entry

into structures. Upon occasion, rats wriggle up

and emerge through toilets.

• Install and secure metal grates over floor

drains (grate openings <1/4 inch across).

• Install sewer floor drain back-up preventers (by

a licensed plumber).

• Contact and work with local sanitation and

health departments regarding sewer system rat

management programs.

For rodenticide bait block applications within

sewers the label may state: run a wire through the holes

in the bait blocks and attach the wire to a stationary

structure such as the bottom step of a manhole ladder

or to a sewer grate, allowing just enough wire for the

blocks to rest on manhole benching. If benching is

not present, suspend bait block a few inches above the

high water line or place blocks on a board supported

by opposing steps of a ladder. Securing blocks in this

manner will minimize the chances for removal by rats

or water. Place at least 12 bait blocks per manhole.

Always read, understand, and follow the rodenticide

label!

Right under their feet, pest management

professionals will realize incredible specialized service

revenue opportunities!

Syngenta introduces Advion® Evolution and Optigard® Cockroach Gel Baits

Adding to its high-performing portfolio of solutions for cockroach control, Syngenta has launched Advion® Evolution and Optigard® Cockroach Gel Baits. These

products offer Pest Management Professionals (PMPs) advanced cockroach control with enhanced bait matrices and differentiated active ingredients (a.i.s).

“We know cockroaches are continuously evolving, but so are our methods of control,” said Pat Willenbrock, head of marketing for Professional Pest Management (PPM) at Syngenta in North America. “We are stepping up our game by giving PMPs exceptional bait products to control predominant cockroach species.”

Advion Evolution features the proven performance of indoxacarb, the same a.i. found in Advion Cockroach. It offers an enhanced bait matrix that is highly attractive to cockroaches, which results in increased feeding in even the toughest-to-control accounts.

Optigard Cockroach features a unique a.i., emamectin benzoate, which affects cockroaches at two different target sites. This helps provide another critical tool to effectively control cockroaches, all while following good resistance management practices. Its unique a.i. and formulation also make it an ideal partner for Advion Evolution and Advion Cockroach as part of a year-long cockroach control strategy to control a wide range of cockroach species.

“When it comes to a cockroach control strategy, PMPs need reliable, proactive solutions for the ever-present cockroach,” said Steve Dorer, market manager for PPM at Syngenta, North America. “Our forward-looking portfolio of cockroach gel bait products will help PMPs stay ahead of cockroaches today and tomorrow.”

Boxelder Bugs Pose Problem in Fall/Winter

Adult boxelder bugs are about 1/2-inch long, black with

orange or red markings, including three stripes on the prothorax, the area right behind the head.

HabitsThe boxelder bug population lives and thrives on maple and seed-bearing boxelder trees during the warmer months where they lay their eggs and feed on leaves, flowers and seeds.

HabitatIn autumn, boxelder bugs become gregarious and congregate on the south side of rocks, trees and buildings where the sun hits. After large masses gather, they migrate to nearby buildings or homes to overwinter. These pests tend to hide in small cracks and crevices in walls to insulate themselves from the cold winter temperatures. I

ThreatsBoxelder bugs are not known to bite, but their piercing-sucking mouthparts can occasionally puncture skin, causing a slight

irritation and producing a red spot similar to a mosquito bite. When crushed or handled roughly, boxelder bugs may leave a reddish orange stain from their fecal material that can result in discoloration of curtains, drapes, clothing, etc.Boxelder Bug PreventionIn order to prevent boxelder bugs from invading homes, repair holes in window and door screens, seal cracks and crevices with a good quality silicone or silicone-latex caulk and install door sweeps to all exterior entrances. If a boxelder infestation is suspected, call us to evaluate and assess the problem.During winter, boxelder bugs are generally inactive. However, during mild, sunny days,

boxelder bugs become mobile with the increased temperature. They enter a home’s interior from overwintering areas within the home, e.g in walls or attics. As they wake up, they follow the warmth into the home’s living quarters. Once there, they typically move towards windows and

other sunny areas. However, the warmth does not reach the insects equally and they do not all become active at the same time.Eventually by spring, all the surviving boxelder bugs that overwintered inside buildings become active. They try to move outdoors but many remain trapped inside. Despite the circumstantial evidence, they do not reproduce in homes -- all the boxelder bugs seen inside during winter and spring entered buildings the previous fall.
