Chris Carter, Head of SchoolDear Parents,

Spring has surely sprung! I love looking out of my office at the beautiful tulip trees in the courtyard. And I am eagerly looking forward to seeing the azaleas bloom for the first spring at Little School!

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed to the Annual Fund. I know that people get tired of fundraising, but I cannot tell you enough about how important it is. The “gap” between our tuition and the actual cost of running St. Mark’s is over $1,000 per student. 52% of parents have worked to help us zap that gap by contributing to the Annual Fund, and 100% of faculty and staff have participated. Thank you for helping us pay our bills and fulfill our financial obligations! If you haven’t contributed yet, please consider doing so!

One of the reasons our “gap” has gotten bigger and the importance of the Annual Fund has increased is that our state funding for the Required Services that we perform for the state has declined significantly. A few years ago we received over $150,000 in Required Services funding, but it has already declined by over 35%, and the current proposed budget for the legislature would eliminate it altogether. It is hard to know what will ultimately happen with the state budget, but we are working both to preserve some funding and plan for its loss. If it becomes necessary, we may ask parents to participate in the Voter Voice program of our private school association in the state in order to contact legislators. For now, we just have to see what the Legislature does.

If you follow St. Mark’s on Facebook, you saw recently that our own Shayan Yerrapragada, SMCS ’14, was named a National Merit Scholar! Shayan is vice-president of the Student Council at Magnet High and won the essay contest at the state Student Council conference last month. Shayan is just one example of the high school scholar-leaders from St. Mark’s who attend our area high schools.

Remember that on March 18 we are having a special Open House specifically for our middle school. If you know a 5th grader or current middle school student who would be interested in learning about middle school at St. Mark’s, please invite them or give us the name and address so we can send a personal invitation!

Wishing you a pleasant (and dry!) weekend,

Chris Carter, D.Min.Head of School
