Who Am I?

I was born on Christmas day in 1821 and began my career as a teacher, working especially well with rambunctious boys. But when the American Civil War broke out, I immediately volunteered to deliver medical supplies to the front lines. I never turned my back on the sick and went on to found and become president of the American Red Cross. Under my leadership, the Red Cross became a leader in offering aid to those suffering from both wars and natural disasters in America and abroad. Who am I?
